The Globe Newsletter of Gleeson College
Issue 25 > Friday 14 September 2018
The Northern Territory Immersion Trip has become an important component of what Gleeson College is able to offer to our students and to the wider community. The word ‘Immersion’ suggests that this was an experiential learning at its very best. Students were not just able to dabble their toes in the water but rather fully submerge themselves into the Tiwi community.
Our first two days were spent in Darwin enjoying the multicultural markets of Parap and visiting the Fannie Bay Gaol Museum. After a wonderful picnic lunch in the Botanical gardens we boarded the SeaDarwin for a cruise of the harbour. We then ventured to the artificial lagoon for a swim and a chance to take some calculated risks on giant buoys in the lake. Tea was at the Stokes Hill Wharf where we contemplated the first of many sunsets in the ‘Top End’.
On Sunday morning, we visited the Night Cliff Market, Darwin Museum and Art Gallery to see the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island Art Awards. Having fully immersed ourselves in the waters of Darwin it was time to travel by Sea Link Ferry across 85 kilometres of the Arafura Strait to Bathurst Island and the Tiwi community of Wurrumiyanga (the place where the cycads grow). Mrs Leanne Stafford, Deputy Principal of Murrupurtiyanuwu Catholic Primary School, met us and graciously arranged transport of all our luggage to our new home for the week in the School library!
For the next five days the students would assist the teachers and students in the small Catholic primary school

CATHOLIC SCHOOLS MUSIC FESTIVAL > Pride in Success
One of our Gleeson 10 values is ‘Pride in Success’ and that is what came to mind as we sat in the audience on Wednesday evening at the Entertainment Centre for the 2018 Catholic Schools Music Festival. Our students were amazing!
The CSMF is celebrating its 30th year, just like Gleeson College, and the concert on Wednesday evening was one of the best in this time. Some 400 primary school students made up the main choir, all from approximately 15 Catholic schools and some inaugural Year 7 students from Gleeson College. They memorized words and choreography to 10 songs and delivered them on the evening with accuracy and enthusiasm. Like proud parents, we easily picked our students in the mass choir and focused on their wonderful performances during the night.
The Gleeson Collee Stage Band and Concert Band were chosen to perform under the orb as guests arrived (see photos below). They sounded sensational and elicited a number of generous comments from guests who stopped and listened in awe.
Two of our male vocalists were chosen to be part of a Catholic secondary
schools, all male sector of the choir that provided some depth to the younger voices of the main choir and they were fantastic in this. The highlight of the supporting performances was our senior choir who performed ‘Take me Home’ in amazing harmony. They were the standout performance of the evening.
It was truly one of those experiences that make you so proud of our students and their fabulous talents. Thank you so much to the staff and parents who made the evening possible. We were wonderfully represented and took great pride in the success of our performing arts students.
Year 12 Trial ExamsTrial exams and workshops were held this week for our Year 12 students. This can be a stressful time as the results of these ‘first trial’ exams can often be a little disappointing to students. It is important that they realise that these exams are experiential; designed to give them a true sense of sitting for a 3 or 2 hour paper and learning something about the techniques and skills involved in achieving the best results.
It is hoped that an outcome of Trial Exam week is a renewed motivation for the final effort leading up to the conclusion of this very important phase of education.
Year 12 Term 3 Holiday BreakAt this stage many of our Year 12 students are planning their Term 3 holiday break around the various workshops and trial exams which have been organised by Year 12 teaching staff. Each student has received a program of events held at the College over the break (see pg 3) and this also appears on our website blog (news section). Understandably, some students have booked into commercially run revision seminars and these can be very productive and useful too.
It is fantastic to hear and see the enthusiasm that many of our students have at this stage of the year as they approach the final hurdles of Year 12. The students have been reminded though, that they should have some ‘down time’ during these holidays to recharge and prepare for the final few weeks of Term 4 lessons, final assignments and examinations.
Report Writing and PTNStaff are currently in the process of entering Term 3 grades into iScholaris. The Years 8-11 parent/student/teacher interview night will be held early next term with notification regarding the process to be emailed in coming weeks.
God bless,
Mr J Corbo,Deputy Principal

YEAR 12 WORKSHOPS > Term 3 Holidays
As in past years, we will have a period of uniform changeover,
where students may wear either full winter uniform or full summer
uniform. This changeover time will be in the
LAST WEEK OF TERM 3.The weather can be quite varied at this time of the year and this option allows students to dress according to the conditions of
the day. This changeover will only be for the week indicated and it is stressed that students must be wearing either the COMPLETE
SUMMER UNIFORM or the COMPLETE WINTER UNIFORM, not a combination of both, during
that period.
Uniform requirements are detailed in the Student Diary. Can I also mention that the College sports
jacket is not be worn as the outer garment with the summer or
winter uniform.

PARKING INNEARBY STREETS
Dear Students and Families,
We have been made aware that of a number of vehicles associated with Gleeson College, have been parked in nearby streets blocking access to residential driveways and potentially blocking access to bin collection.
We ask you please to consider our local residents especially on Thursdays when bins are collected.
The Tea Tree Gully Council will have inspectors visiting the area to ascertain the extent of the problem. Thank you.

2018 NT IMMERSION TRIP > Bathurst Island
by reading and working alongside the students as they developed their literacy and numeracy skills. I think our students learnt a great deal about the role of the teacher in their classroom and have a renewed respect for the behavioural management skills of these teachers, who when all else fails give the kids lots of love and support!
On Wednesday evening we joined the Grade 5 children on their annual camp near a water hole approximately 30 minutes from the township. The students were eagerly led down to the waterhole for a swim. This was truly an immersion as the boys and girls helped our students manage the hidden rocks and tree branches. The campfire in the evening provided the only light, as Milika, a Tiwi strong woman and elder, led the group in singing, dancing and storytelling. Other than the tarpaulin on the ground, the school bus and the gas barbeque this could well have occurred exactly the same way 5000 years ago!
On Thursday afternoon we had another cultural experience with King’s Tiwi Tours, allowing the students to engage in more dances, face and shell painting and smoking ceremonies. The students visited the original church and radio shack, which was the first place to be bombed when Darwin was attacked in 1942. The museum visit was also a wonderful tribute to the history of the island. On Friday it was time to say goodbye to our new friends, but not before we challenged ourselves and the children with nine science experiments about water, flotation and surface tension, as well as making slime and sherbet! The Advanced Technology Project (ATP) kindly funded and supported this presentation.
It was a very tired and sleepy group who boarded the ferry in the afternoon. And rightly so, for Mr Milne had woken them at 6.15am to witness a sunrise over the island. This was a dadirri (deep listening) moment for them as they sat in silence and listened to nature respond to an exquisite sunrise. Likewise in the evening we watched the sunset over Darwin on the lawns of Cullen Bay.

Our group would like to sincerely thank Tourism NT for their financial support in enabling our students to visit Crocodylus Park and the Litchfield National Park on Saturday. This was an opportunity to see crocodiles up very close and enjoy the beautiful waterfalls and rock pools. There is no doubt that our group were totally immersed in community and nature by the end of their experience.
Finally, on Sunday students were able to sleep in until 8am. We quickly packed everything and headed for Aquascene - a marine project that has operated for 50 years feeding wild fish who come into the harbour on high tide. Students spent almost an hour mesmerised by
the size and variety of fish present. A quick coastal drive and we ventured to the airport for a very long and quiet flight back to Adelaide.
The students would like to sincerely thank Mr Milne and Ms Staffin for their tireless work and energy in providing an extraordinary experience filled with deep learning, community and mission. As the quote suggests, “we were challenged and we were changed.”

SENIOR LEGAL STUDIES STUDENTS VISIT PARLIAMENT + LAW SCHOOLOn Tuesday 4 September, the recently inducted Marshall Liberal Government
presented their first State Budget in 16 years. Unless you were avoiding
all forms of media, whether this be traditional or social, you would
have undoubtedly been exposed to the controversial calls made by the incumbent Treasurer, Rob Lucas.
For the Year 11 and 12 Legal Studies Classes, the introduction of the Budget could not have come at a better time, as the Budget reply coincided with our scheduled excursion to the Adelaide University Law School and Parliament House on North Terrace on Thursday 6 September. This provided an ideal opportunity to witness Responsible Governance in action when sitting in the Public Gallery of the South
Australian House of Assembly.
Both the Year 11s and 12s have spent significant time in class learning
about the Australian Separation of Powers model. In the first semester, students undertook an excursion to the South Australian Law Courts in Victoria square to engage with the
Judicial arm of this model. This term’s excursion focused on the Legislative and the Executive arms. The outing
exposed students to the facilities and pathways available to those choosing to pursue a future career with a law
focus at the University of Adelaide and were able to inquire about life as a law
student while on tour with a current
law undergraduate student liaison. Our cohort were able to learn about the types of assignments they could
expect, how to combine law with other areas of interest and learn about the vocational pathways available to law
graduates.
The second half of the day featured a tour of Parliament House with Blair Boyer, Member for Wright, who is the local representative for many of the
students in our Legal Studies classes. Blair took the time to meet with our students, guide them through the different chambers of parliament, teach them about the workings of
government in South Australia and answer any questions they had. We were then able to watch Question
Time and hear the various debates, challenges and replies to the Budget
and other government issues.
The fieldtrip was a highly beneficial outing to consolidate much of the
learning conveyed in class, which will inevitably prove valuable in future class discussions, assignments and
undoubtedly in the forthcomingYear 12 Examination.

YEAR 10 CHILD STUDIES > Tenison Place Early Learning + Kinder Visit
This week the kindy children from Tenison Place Early Learning & Kinder visited our Year 10 Child Studies Class.
In preparation for this visit, Gleeson students trialled biscuit recipes and
created a photo recipe book that could be used to teach the kindy children how
to make biscuits. When making their decisions, students had to consider the abilities of the children and their safety. For example, choosing a dough which could be mixed with a wooden spoon,
rather than using an electric beater. They also had to consider recipes that the children could be actively involved in the majority of the making process.
When creating the photo recipe books, students contemplated the use of
simple language that the children could read, with clear pictures demonstrating
each step of the recipe.
Gleeson students helped the children to mix and knead the dough, roll it out,
cut out different shapes and ‘paint’ them with coloured egg wash. The
children were extremely excited to be able to take their baked goods home in a care pack to share with their parents,
along with their own copy of the recipe. The Child Studies class thoroughly
enjoyed this experience of working with the young children. A big thank you to Tenison Place ELC & Kinder staff and
children for visiting us!
Miss Ashlee Curtis,Year 10 Child Studies Teacher
Student Reflections >“The part of working with the kindy
children I enjoyed the most was getting to understand the knowledge of a
young child and how their involvement and interaction during the task varied immensely between them.” - Angelina “I learnt that you still have to carefully
explain some things because they don’t quite understand yet and can easily get
things muddled.” - Ella“I enjoyed the entire day, but the best
part about working with the kindy children was how excited they were to be there. They showed extreme enthusiasm and were not afraid to
give anything a go. When the biscuits were finished and they got to see their creation, they were so keen to share it
with their families.” - Jana
YEAR 7 GIRLS 9-A-SIDE FOOTBALL > GC ‘Kicking Goals’ in Inaugural Season!
During Term 3, Year 7 girls have been competing in a 9-a-side AFL Football competition held at St Ignatius College. Each Wednesday night, 11 of the bravest Year 7 girls have traded in their soccer shirts and netball skirts for
mouth guards and footy guernseys.
This competition has been the first experience many of the girls have had playing competitive AFL. Each week the girls stepped up and gave their all. Competing
in a competition against girls who were in one or two year levels higher, they were unable to win a game, however they had many close contests and scored
many goals along the way. They also showed plenty of development each week.
In Round 1, many of the girls were too worried to tackle, however by the last game of the season there were more hits than an episode of ‘Biff, Bumps and
Bloopers’! Congratulations on a terrific season girls and I hope that you all continue with your footy next year.

YEAR 11 FOOD + HOSPITALITY > American High Tea Impresses Guests
Miss Feleppa’s Year 11 Food and Hospitality Class smashed their high
tea function out of the park with guests enjoying an amazing array of savoury and sweet delights on
Monday! Invited family, friends and staff raved about the delicious food, great atmosphere and stellar service
provided by our Foodie students.
R U OK? DAY 2018 > “Ask, Listen, Encourage Help + Check In”For students, learning how to support their peers and talk about how they
feel is an important life lesson. So where better to start than in the
classroom? This week as part of our Personal
Development Program and to mark National R U OK? Day, Care Groups from Years 7 to Year 11 worked with
their teachers using the resources from the R U OK? Education Program.
R U OK? has developed four conversation steps to give you the skills and confidence to navigate
a conversation with someone you’re worried about > Ask, Listen,
Encourage Help and Check In.Students also learned about how
to best support those with a mental health concern by listening to two
guest speakers who have some lived experience (Kylie from Life without
Barriers is pictured presenting to our Year 8 and 9 students).
If this has brought up conversations at home, or if you would like support to have these conversations, please visit
the R U OK? website at:
https://www.ruok.org.auor alternatively, email our College
Counsellors Mrs Daphne Vassiliou or Mrs Sally Parsons (email addresses
below) for more information, support and/or guidance.
[email protected] by having conversations can we break the stigma and if 1 in 4
Australians have issues with mental health, then it is something we need
to talk about!

the racquet and ball and called this ‘soft tennis’ (sofutotenissu), which grew in popularity in Asia before coming to Europe in 2004.
