What is Naturopathy? Naturopathic medicine is a distinct healthcare profession that combines natural, non-toxic therapies with current advances in healthcare. Naturopathic physicians are clinically trained in a wide variety of natural therapeutics, adapted to each patient, with a focus on preventative and whole patient care. Therapies which may be used by a Naturopath include:

• Clinical Nutrition

• Herbal Medicine

• Massage

• Aromatherapy

• Counselling

• Flower Essences

• Iridology

• Basic Homeopathy

• Counselling and Stress Management

• Mineral Therapy

Depending on his/her interests and skills, a Naturopath may focus on a few or all of these areas. Naturopaths co-operate with all other branches of medical science, referring to other practitioners for treatment or diagnosis when appropriate.

Principles of Natural Medicine The Naturopathic approach to health and wellness is guided by the following Philosophy and principles of practice: The Healing Power of Nature: Naturopathic medicine recognises an inherent self-healing process in each person that is ordered and intelligent. Naturopaths act to identify and remove obstacles to healing and recovery, and facilitate and augment this inherent self-healing process. Identifying and Treating the Causes: The Naturopath seeks to identify and remove the underlying causes of illness, rather than to merely eliminate or suppress symptoms. First Do No Harm: To avoid harming the patient, Naturopaths follow three precepts:

• Utilise methods and medical substances that minimise the risk of harmful side- effects, using the least force necessary to diagnose and treat.

• Avoid, when possible, the harmful suppression of symptoms. • Acknowledge, respect, and work with the individual’s self-healing process.

Doctor as Teacher: Naturopaths educate their patients and encourage self-responsibility for health. They also recognise and employ the therapeutic potential of the Doctor-Patient relationship. Treating the Whole Person: Naturopaths treat each patient by taking into account individual physical, mental, emotional, genetic, environmental, social and other factors. Since total health includes spiritual health, Naturopaths may encourage individuals to pursue their own personal spiritual development. Prevention: Emphasising the prevention of disease, Naturopaths assess a patient’s risk factors, heredity and susceptibility to disease, and make appropriate interventions in partnership with their patients to help prevent illness.

Naturopathic Clinic Experience: Overview and General Objectives The principal aim of Clinical training is to allow students to apply knowledge learned in other stages of training, and to assess their ability to do so in a safe and clinically competent manner.

It should be noted that, for obvious educational reasons, this subject has a significant list of suggested prerequisites.

Therefore it will be necessary for students to participate in Clinic Workshops towards the end of year 2 and 3 of the student’s training.

Case Analyses – 40 Cases This aspect of clinical training involves the student in conducting detailed case analyses for 40 individual cases. The case scenarios will be supplied to the student by NCCA. The student has direct responsibility for analysis of the 40 cases, development of the treatment plan(s), and prescribing. However the patient will not be present, nor are they required to be conducted in “real-time”. Each completed case analysis is to be reviewed by a qualified assessor from NCCA.

The student will be required to complete 20 of these case analyses before the commencement of Clinical training in year 2.

The student will be required to complete the remaining 20 case analyses before commencement of Clinical training in year 3.

Before being issued with the Qualification, HLT60507 Advanced Diploma Naturopathy, the student has the option of either:

• Attending 2 week Clinic Workshops at the end of year 2 and 3 of study. • Finding part-time or full-time employment with a Naturopath. • Finding Vocational Work Placement (Work Experience)

The student will be supplied with log books, patient file forms and blank treatment plans as part of the resource material required for these tasks.

Training Outcomes Completion of the Qualification HLT60507 Advanced Diploma of Naturopathy provides learners with a complete overview of the many modalities used within Naturopathy that they will use in practice, including knowledge of herb/drug/nutrient interactions and contraindications of use and dosage rates etc. They will develop a complete understanding of all the bodily systems and disease states that may be encountered within their working practice.

The learner will also develop the knowledge and skills to run a professional practice and to do so within legislative guidelines.

Each learner will gain the relevant knowledge and applied skills in becoming a practitioner of Naturopathy.

Frequently Asked Questions Advanced Diploma Naturop athy: Question: You are offering your Advanced Diploma of Naturopathy at a very competitive rate – Is this Diploma a recognised qualification, and how are you able to offer the course at such a competitive rate? Answer: Yes – this is a recognised qualification which is part of the Health Training Package HLT60507 and is endorsed by the Australian National Training Authority. Part of our vision statement is to put people (education) before profit. We are able to achieve this by keeping strict control of our costs and overheads, without sacrificing quality. This way we can pass on the savings to our prospective students. Question: I have been told that I should be studying for the Bachelor of Naturopathy. What does this entail? Answer: The Bachelor of Naturopathy contains more elements of study and of course is more expensive as a result of this. The Advanced Diploma of Naturopathy Qualification is very comprehensive and allows you to start up your own practice with confidence, and of course if you wish at a later date to study those extra units for your Bachelor of Naturopathy, you could do so on a part-time basis whilst you are working in your clinic. Question: How does face-to-face teaching (attending a College) compare to studying by Correspondence? Answer: A lot of people find it inconvenient and more expensive to attend a College every day, and of course you need to live in the area to be able to attend. Also, they may be working and may need to study out of school time. Correspondence Colleges offer more choices for the prospective student. NCCA students have the choice of either full-time study, 20 hours per week or part-time study, 10 hours per week. Purchasing of text books are also kept to a minimum while studying by Correspondence as a lot of the information required for the student to study their particular subject is included within the workbooks. Question: How much support will I receive if I choose to study by Correspondence? Answer: To make sure that the student stays on track achieves their goals; interaction with the College is paramount. Here at NCCA our policy is to motivate students at all times by encouraging feedback, and by answering any questions the student may have, in a professional and helpful manner.

NCCASIC 2 Iridology and the Eyes

Study to enhance your Earning and Learning capacity!!! – These courses are designed for professionals already in the Health Industry such as Masseuses, Chiropractors, Dentists, Beauty Therapists, Health shop owners and assistants. They are also available to the general public who have an interest in empowering themselves and their family and friends in the art of disease prevention, wholistic health and well-being. What is Iridology? Iridology is a scientific analysis of patterns and structures in the iris of the eye, locating areas and stages of inflammation throughout the body. The iris is the portion of the eye showing colour. It reveals body constitution, inherent strengths and weaknesses, and health levels and transitions that take place in a person’s body according to their way of life. How does it work? The complex iris is composed of hundreds of thousands of nerve endings which are connected by impulses to every tissue of the body through the brain and nervous system. The nerve fibres, or trabecula, respond specifically to tissue and organ conditions, with a corresponding physiological reflex manifested in the iris as lesions and colour variations. The iris chart, - the result of many years of clinical observation and intensive research by Dr. Bernard Jensen and others - represents the basic placement of body organs and tissues similar to a map. This particular course contains the following concepts:

Part 1 Iridology

• Iris diagnosis. • How to inspect an iris. • Markings of the iris. • Zones in the iris. • Colours found in the eye and an

explanation of what this means. • Explanation of each iris sign and

what this indicates for your client. • Many coloured examples of

markings found in the iris.

Part 2 The Eyes

the eye • Effects of aging • Different disease states associated

with the eye.

This course is offered at a Practitioner Level and at the completion of this course you will have a comprehensive knowledge of the use of Iris diagnosis and will be quite confident in being able to diagnose health problems presented by family or friends or to use for your patients/clients within a Clinic or Workplace environment. NCCASIC 11 Herbal Medicine for Home Use

The human race has always been dependent on plants. Since ancient time’s herbs have been gathered and cultivated for food, medicines, shelter, dyes, preservatives and fragrances. Herb is a collective name for a wide range of plants whose stems are not woody or persistent, but die back after flowering. In addition there are a number of shrubs and trees which, although not herbs, are used in herbal healing. Although herbs were used in ancient civilisations where they were the principal and often the only components of medicines, seasonings, dyes, cosmetics and in some instances narcotics; over the last 150 years they have been largely replaced by manufactured pharmaceuticals and chemicals. In recent years, disillusionment with modern society and its dependence on synthetic chemicals has caused many people to re-evaluate their life-style and to turn to alternative methods for the solution to problems such as tension, infertility, eczema, excess weight and even insect control. Herbs are increasing in popularity because they are relatively easy to grow, require limited space and care are suitable for use in containers, and there are a large number of different species to choose from. This renewed interest in their cultivation and uses plus the need for scientific re-evaluation of their chemical properties has led to a demand for more information about their history, cultivation, uses in cooking, medicine and agriculture. Within this workbook we will endeavour to understand the use of Nature’s herbs for healing, how to prepare these herbs and the energetics of each herb presented which will enable us to become more self-sufficient in regard to our own health care and the health of our family and friends. NCCASIC 13 Aromatherapy for Massage Therapists

Aromatherapy is derived from the ancient practice of using natural plant essences to promote health and wellbeing. It consists of the use of pure essential oils obtained from a wide assortment of plants, which have been steam distilled or cold-pressed from flowers, fruit, bark and roots. Aromatherapy can help ease a wide assortment of ailments; easing aches, pains, and injuries, while relieving the discomforts of many health problems. Aromatherapy also acts on the central nervous system, relieving depression and anxiety, reducing stress, relaxing, uplifting, sedating or stimulating, restoring both physical and emotional wellbeing

The Aromatherapeutic effects of essential oils can be administered in different ways, depending on the oil and the effect.
