Principal’s Message Happy Spring! The school year is quickly flying by! Can you believe that April is here and we are already into the 4 th quarter? This will be an extremely busy month for all of us. The Smarter Balanced Assessment (SBA) for grades 3 – 6 will be conducted through April. Please support your child by having them work on and complete all assignments, continue reading for their Reading Books Campaign, and be sure they are in school ON TIME (7:45 am). Kindergarten registration for the next school year, 2018-2019, is still going on. Call the office for more information. Also, if you have not turned in your rotation form with information for next school year, please do so as soon as possible. This helps us in planning for next school year. Stay tuned for more information on upcoming school activities. In April, we will have our Purple Up Week (celebrating the military child), a track meet for Grades 5 & 6, a JPO field day, Grade 6 orientations to middle school (Ilima Intermediate and Ewa Makai Middle), Go Green Week and a book swap celebrating National Library Week. Robotics Team 96706A will represent Hawaii in the World Vex Competition in Kentucky. Please wish them luck during this exciting adventure. In May, we will be conducting post (final) assessment (i.e. DRA, iReady, etc.), have our Grade 6 moving on activities, and modified end of the year celebrations. So get those books read and goals met, assignments completed, and ALL financial obligations taken care of (lunch loans, uniform loans, payment for damaged books, planner fee, IDs, etc.), so you don’t miss any of these activities, and let’s get ready for a whirlwind finish to the end of this school year. Just a reminder – name tags must be worn to lunch. If he/she doesn’t have one, he will miss after lunch playtime by helping wipe café tables during this time. A new name tag will be issued if the name tag is missing for a few days. The student will be charged $3.00 for the replacement cost, and will be counted as an obligation. So remind your child to wear his/her name tag to lunch. Please help us remind your child about SAFETY in school and out of school. They should be listening to the adults in school and follow all rules throughout campus. Students should leave school immediately after school (please pick up your child on time) and head straight home. If they attend afterschool programs, they should go home immediately after their program. When outside of school, remind them to watch out for strangers and report any unusual activities to a trusted adult. If you are taking your child off campus during the school day, please remember to sign them out. Also, ALL visitors on campus during the school day must have clearance from the office. ALL visitors must have a badge during school hours, so please check in the office before heading on campus. Safety is important to all of us. Please stay tuned for all of our upcoming activities. Things are coming fast and furious. Please do not hesitate to call if you have any questions. See you at our next event. Take care! A hui hou! Student Council InterestedinrunningforStudentCouncil? Do you think you have what it takes to lead the Bees next school year? If you do, teachers in grades 4 and 5 will be taking nominations for the 4 positions available in student council for school year 2018-2019. Our officers this year were in charge of hosting events, planning activities, raising money for charities and so much more! The candidates that run for the officer positions MUST be students who have upheld the “3 Bees” to the highest standards (Be Respectful, Be Responsible, Be Safe). Candidates’ academic and behavioral history must be in good standing to be considered for these positions. During the election process, candidates are expected to meet and follow all guidelines. If you qualify to run for these positions, we would be excited to have you represent our school! Stay tuned for Student Council application guidelines.

Ewa Beach Elementary will be conducting Smarter Balanced Assessment (SBA) testing April 9 – May 11. A testing schedule has been provided with your student. Here are some things you can do to help our school and your child have a successful SBA testing experience:

ü Please send your child to school on time. School starts at 7:45 am. The tardy bell rings at 7:50 am. If a student is late for school and their classroom is in testing, the student will not be allowed to join their class until the class is done testing.

ü Please do not schedule routine doctor or dentist appointments on testing dates.

ü Emphasize the importance of these tests and encourage your child to do their very best. For questions or concerns, please schedule a conference with your child’s teacher.

SBA Testing April 9th – May 11th

On March 1st various members from our community visited our school to speak about the importance of reading in their careers. This event is celebrated annually in conjunction with the National Read Across America Campaign, which honors Dr. Seuss's birthday.

CommunityCareerDay&ReadAloudEvent

A huge mahalo to all our Guest Readers... Thank You for taking time out of your busy schedules to support our event.

Parent Notices

ü SchoolWithdrawalsIf your child will not be returning to Ewa Beach Elementary School or will not be going to Ilima Intermediate or Ewa Makai Middle School next school year, please come to the office immediately to sign a withdrawal form. General Withdrawal Procedures:

1. A written release form must be filled out in the office at least 2 weeks prior to departure. (Due to the large number of transfers anticipated, we ask that you inform us as soon as possible if you are not returning in July.)

2. Students are responsible for returning all books to their classroom teacher and the Library. Release packets will not be issued until all books are returned and any applicable fees have been paid. Please do not wait until the last day to return books.

3. Release packets are to be picked up at the office by the parent/guardian after school on the student’s last day (May 31) or prior to your departure from Hawaii.

ü FinancialObligationsThe end of the school year is fast approaching and it is time to remind parents and guardians to commit to paying off their children’s outstanding obligations. Unpaid balances for such items as school uniforms, lost or damaged textbooks, home school planners, name tages, and lunch loans may make your child ineligible to participate in extra-curricular activities in May.

Sixth grade parents please note: All financial obligations must be paid before any 6th grade student attends the 6th Grade “Moving On” Ceremony and other end-of-year 6th grade activities. All payments must be in cash, money order or cashier’s check. No personal checks will be accepted. Personal checks received will be returned to student. Receipt for cash payments will be given upon request.

This ineligibility consequence is in accordance with the Hawaii Administrative Rules, Chapter 57, Restitution for Damaged and Lost Books, Equipment, Supplies and Outstanding Financial Obligations, Title 8, 8-57-5 Penalties for Outstanding Financial Obligations:

“In addition to any other penalties that may be imposed, a student who fails to make restitution as required under section 8-57-4 (Collection of fees and charges) shall be prohibited from participating in any school activity.”

ü LibraryNews The end of the year is creeping up on us. Start hunting around the house for those overdue books. Payment of any lost or damaged books or materials will ensure that your student will not miss out on any special end of year activities such as classroom parties, graduation, etc. Let’s keep on reading all through the summer. Check out the Ewa Beach Public Library and their summer reading program. Also...be on the watch for our Summer Reading Rocks flier. It will have log in info for the online programs that will be available to EBES students throughout the summer. Participants will be entered in a drawing to win gift cards at the Welcome Back Assembly next school year.

ü SchoolCommunityCouncilParentRepresentativeThe Ewa Beach Elementary School Community Council (SCC) is a forum of our school’s key stakeholders (principals, teachers, school staff, parents, students, and community members) to exchange ideas about how to improve student achievement. The SCC helps craft the school’s Academic and Financial Plan, which sets the goals for the school, the programs, and the available resources to reach these goals. The Parent Representative on the School Community Council is the spokesperson for parent concerns and suggestions. The Parent Representative position is a two-year volunteer position. Elections were held recently for this position, and we are happy to announce that Mrs. Lolita Ayala was elected as the new Parent Representative. She will begin serving in this position on August 1, 2018. Mrs. Delia Clark is the current Parent Representative. She will complete her two-year term with the end of this school year. Thank you to Mrs. Clark for her volunteer service to our school and our Parent Community. If you have questions or concerns, Mrs. Clark can be reached at 428-1564 or by email ([email protected]).
