Here at Ampleforth College, we pride ourselves on

providing an education which means you will go beyond your own, and everyone else’s, expectations. We ask you and every student for the

best that you can give. Academically, that challenge is created by a comprehensive range of subjects, highly professional teaching and first-class facilities for learning. Alongside our rigorous academic timetable, we place a strong focus on, and dedicated support for, independent learning.

Benedictine balance is at the heart of everything we do. Whether it’s through individual tutoring, pastoral care or academic ambition, we push ourselves to the limits throughout the year to ensure you have the opportunity to fulfil your potential and flourish.

If you would like to discuss any aspect of our curriculum or approaches to teaching and learning, please do not hesitate to contact me at [email protected].

In designing our curriculum, as in every other aspect of school life, we have some particular priorities. We aim to provide an inspiring learning environment, and with a broad and balanced curriculum you are given the opportunity to study a wide range of subjects to the highest possible level.

Our teaching is first class and we recruit our staff not just for their qualifications or subject expertise, but also for their ability to inspire students to learn.

We strongly believe that engagement fuels learning and we encourage this across the board. Our tutor system works on an individual and group basis providing you with all-round academic support and we offer endless opportunities for you to further your learning outside of the classroom, be it through Extended Project Qualifications (EPQ), Individual Enquiries, trips or competitions. Use of iPads also offers learning experiences which are formative, collaborative and relevant. We pride ourselves on spotting potential early and making the most of it.

Inspiring learningenvironment “ THE TEACHERS WERE BRILLIANT.

THEY KNEW HOW TO GET ME TO WHERE I NEEDED TO BE. WE WERE ALL ENCOURAGED TO THINK INDEPENDENTLY AND WERE TREATED AS INDIVIDUALS.”

Edward Gambin, Old Amplefordian

If you have the ability to gain four A*s, you will at Ampleforth. Three quarters of our students gain A* to B in their A levels and the majority go on to top universities. We are also delighted to be introducing BTECs as an option at Sixth Form for a more vocational and coursework based

approach to learning.

We place a strong emphasis on dedicated support in the run up to and during the exam season. As well as regular individual tutor meetings, we run group revision sessions and provide personalised revision plans to help you and all our students flourish.

Above all else, we recognise the need to develop self-esteem and personal resilience so that you are on a secure foundation to deal with the challenges and pressures that life will no doubt throw at you. This is part of what we call a ‘Compass for Life’ at Ampleforth – the sense that we teach our students both academic and life skills and don’t simply prepare you to pass exams.

Please contact [email protected] if you would like to see our GCSE and Sixth Form options brochures for a full list of exam subjects on offer.

“ AMPLEFORTH MADE ME TAKE SCHOOL SERIOUSLY FOR THE FIRST TIME, BECAUSE THE TEACHERS TOOK TEACHING SERIOUSLY. IT IS A SCHOOL THAT STRIVES TO DEVELOP THE WHOLE PERSON, NOT ONLY ACADEMICALLY BUT ALSO SPIRITUALLY. IT OFFERS A GREAT FOUNDATION FOR COPING WITH LIFE’S CHALLENGES.”

Leon Reimer, Old Amplefordian

“ MY TEACHERS AT AMPLEFORTH LOVED THEIR SUBJECTS. THAT IS INFECTIOUS. THIS WAS ANYTHING BUT ROTE LEARNING. ALL MY TEACHERS GAVE UP FREE TIME TO HELP ME DO MY BEST. I GOT USED TO WORKING IN MY OWN TIME AND NAVIGATING MY OWN, VERY FULL, SCHEDULE. THAT HAS HELPED IMMEASURABLY AT OXFORD.”

“ AMPLEFORTH IS FULL OF PEOPLE WHO DO LOADS, AND DO IT WELL. I DID MY GAP YEAR AT AMPLEFORTH - NOT ANYTHING TO DO WITH ACADEMICS - I WAS A PE TEACHER! WHAT A CONFIDENCE BOOSTER THAT WAS! I PLAYED HOCKEY AT AMPLEFORTH AND NOW HAVE FOUR HOCKEY BLUES. FOR ME, IT WAS A RECIPROCAL THING. I UNDERSTOOD THAT IF I PUT IN THE EFFORT, MY TEACHERS WOULD PUT IN THE EFFORT FOR ME. HOWEVER FAR YOU GET, THEY WILL ALWAYS PUSH YOU FURTHER.”

“ I ARRIVED FROM HONG KONG, A SHY 13 YEAR OLD WITH POOR ENGLISH. AMPLEFORTH TOOK ME IN, AND WITH FANTASTIC SUPPORT, I FOUND MY FEET AND MY CONFIDENCE. I THINK, WHEN I ARRIVED, I WAS NOT ACADEMICALLY STRONG AND I HAD NO IDEA WHAT I WANTED TO DO. AFTER A YEAR, EVERYTHING PICKED UP AND I REALISED, NOT ONLY THAT I WANTED TO READ LAW, BUT THAT I WAS GOOD ENOUGH TO TRY FOR A RUSSELL GROUP UNIVERSITY.”

“ AS I GREW UP AT AMPLEFORTH I WAS ENCOURAGED TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR MY OWN WORK. I THINK THE SCHOOL REALLY COMES INTO ITS OWN IN THE SIXTH FORM. ALL MY TEACHERS WENT BEYOND THE SYLLABUS. THEY HELPED ME LEARN TO FORMULATE AN ARGUMENT - THAT IS WHY I HAVE BECOME A LAWYER.”

Homework is an opportunity to motivate you to become a successful learner and develop skills in independent learning, resilience and perseverance. We plan homework as an integral part of the learning process and set high standards for the quality

of work and its presentation. Teachers provide individualised feedback with recommended actions and we regularly monitor and evaluate our approach and encourage all our students and staff to share ideas for best practice.

Learning should be something you do to prepare yourself for the future but more than that, it should be something you want to do. At Ampleforth, we instil in you the motivation and desire for a lifetime of learning.

Equilibrium is one of our Benedictine values. Our setting and the holistic education we offer mean that work life balance is part of daily life at Ampleforth. Living, working and playing sport together means there is a real community spirit and wellbeing comes naturally.

“ MY TIME AT AMPLEFORTH HAS BEEN A MIXTURE OF FRIENDSHIP, HARD WORK AND SPIRITUAL DEVELOPMENT. I THINK THE SCHOOL HAS ENABLED ME TO REACH MY POTENTIAL ACADEMICALLY AND HAS GIVEN ME A RANGE OF SKILLS FOR LATER LIFE.”

Maria Toone, Year 11

Fulfil your potential

“ AMPLEFORTH HAS BEEN A VERY VALUABLE EXPERIENCE THAT I WILL ALWAYS LOOK BACK ON WITH JOY. I WAS IMMEDIATELY WELCOMED WHEN I JOINED. IT HAS BROADENED MY HORIZONS, AND ENCOURAGED ME TO TRY NEW THINGS.”

Julian Boecker, Year 13

We welcome students of all abilities and seek to support them fully in their academic endeavours.

We offer support for students with specific learning needs by providing individual extra teaching, general academic counselling and study-skills.

If English is an additional language for you, we offer one-to-one support as you get to grips with day-to-day learning. We love to see students from all over the world settle in and become part of the Ampleforth way of life.

Whatever your ability, we want you to thrive here, to go beyond your expectations and fulfil your potential.

Come and see

“ THIS SCHOOL CARES ABOUT ITS STUDENTS, SO WHEN THEY GO OUT INTO THE WIDER WORLD THEY WILL SUCCEED IN A MORAL CONTEXT, IN A FAMILY CONTEXT. IT’S TRYING TO DO SOMETHING BEYOND ACADEMICS, AND I THINK THAT’S REALLY IMPORTANT.”
