The new “Mopar Road Ready Powered by Dodge” teen safe-dri- ving program schedule was an- nounced today at the Mopar Mile-High NHRA Nationals drag race at Bandimere Speedway, which will host a Denver-area program stop later this fall, said Mopar spokesman Darren Ja- cobs. One-pedal driving combines the highest available level of re- generative braking, which cap- tures otherwise lost energy from deceleration and sends it back to the Bolt EV battery pack for the greatest total vehicle range, said GM spokesman Fred Ligouri. Along with additional software controls, regen braking allows the driver to stop the vehicle without using the brake pedal in certain driving conditions. “Bolt EV customers who want an engaging driving experience will love the thrill of one-pedal driving,” said Bolt EV Chief Engi- neer Josh Tavel. “They will be able to tailor the vehicle to their preferred driving style and maxi- mize their range.” Progressively stronger levels of regen braking, Tavel said, are employed in all Bolt EV driving through a series of four driver-se- lectable modes: • Operating in Drive and eas- ing off the accelerator. • Operating in Drive and using the Regen on Demand paddle on the back of the steering wheel. • Operating in Low and easing off the accelerator. • Operating in Low and using the Regen on Demand paddle in tandem. Since 2004, hundreds of stu- dents on Ford-sponsored teams in Formula SAE, Solar Car, SAE Super mileage and other series work to make their cars as aero- dynamically efficient as possible, said Ford spokeswoman Deeptie Sethi. They aim for perfection – striv- ing to be the fastest and the best, said Erik Stancato, a Ford vehicle architecture-vehicle integration engineer. Stancato formerly cap- tained his Formula SAE team at the University of Michigan-Dear- born. Along their journey, Ford engineers help them refine their craft in one of the company’s world-class wind tunnels. Ford has been inspiring and mentoring the next generation of dedicated student racers for more than a decade, offering the time and expertise of its engi- neers and allowing the teams to put their cars to the test in its tunnel facilities in Allen Park, Deeptie said. An automotive wind tunnel generates a controlled stream of fast-moving air, simulating real- world conditions to allow aero- dynamic development in vehi- cles. Ford’s wind tunnel, Deeptie said, is particularly sophisticated, pro- viding both aerodynamic and aeroacoustic testing in a wide va- riety of environmental conditions for the company’s diverse lineup of both current and future vehi- cles. General Motors and TARDECwill reveal a Chevrolet Coloradohydrogen-based fuel cell electricvehicle in October at the fallmeeting of the Association of theUnited States Army (AUSA) inWashington, D.C.The vehicle is being developed

under an agreement betweenTARDEC (the U.S. Army Tank Au-tomotive Research, Developmentand Engineering Center) and GMthat was signed in 2015, said Gen-eral Motors spokesman AlanAdler.The collaboration enables

the working status of women em-ployed by the federal govern-ment.The local chapter, comprising

about 45 members affiliated withthe arsenal, won the nationalgroup’s Chapter FundraisingAward and Chapter SpecialProject Award.This year’s Chapter Fundrais-

ing Award, Higgins said, recog-nizes the Great Lakes Chapter’s“ingenuity in aligning itsfundraising efforts” with a na-tional nonprofit organizationdevoted to helping civilian feder-al and postal employees.Several other chapters in the

Great Lakes Region are now us-ing this approach to raise moneyfor local scholarship awards.“Everyone who donated funds

to us helped us earn this award,”said Leslie Wilson-Smith, formerchapter president. “From myviewpoint, it was an enterprise

from the fundraising program,went to Danielle Smith (no rela-tion to Wilson-Smith), one of the

Danielle became involved withFEW.“She came to me and said,

‘Would you mentor me and can Ipartner with FEW and support theshelter?’ Just think, at the timewhen she did her first initiative,she was in 10th grade going intothe 11th. We thought, how impor-tant is it for someone of thatyoung age to want to give back?”Danielle has volunteered with

HAVEN for three years.“We remember where we came

from because we have had chal-lenges in our lives,” said Koop.“We have had to stay with othersand there are things we did nothave. So I always told my daugh-ter that if we ever got to a placewhere we could give back, wewould share our resources.”Koop said Smith’s personal

goal was to provide 10 baskets ofdonated goods a year. She col-lects items from such places aslocal doctor and dentist offices,classmates, and used her own

money to put together basketsfor babies. She supports FEW’scoat drive for a soup kitchen.“I think it’s good for her to be

exposed to FEW and these otherorganizations to see that one per-son can make a difference,” saidKoop.“Danielle is such a go-getter,”

said Wilson-Smith. “Her workingwith FEW allows us to mentorher and she partners with us.Some of the things she has donefor us put us in a position to getthis special chapter award.”

DETROIT (AP) – The U.S. isseeking to forcibly limit how fasttrucks, buses and other large ve-hicles can travel on the nation’shighways.A new proposal Aug. 26 would

impose a nationwide limit byelectronically capping speedswith a device on newly madeU.S. vehicles that weigh morethan 26,000 pounds. Regulatorsare considering a cap of 60, 65or 68 mph, though that couldchange.Whatever the speed limit,

drivers would be physically pre-vented from exceeding it. Theproposal, which comes from theNational Highway Traffic SafetyAdministration and Federal Mo-tor Carrier Safety Administra-tion, does not force older heavyvehicles to add the speed-limit-ing technology, but the regula-tors are still considering it.The government said capping

speeds for new large vehicleswill reduce the 1,115 fatal crash-es involving heavy trucks thatoccur each year and save $1 bil-lion in fuel costs.While the news is being wel-

comed by some safety advo-cates and non-professional driv-ers, many truckers said thatsuch changes could lead to dan-gerous scenarios where they are

traveling at much lower speedsthan everyone else.The rule has been ensnared in

a regulatory maze in the decadesince the nonprofit group Road-safe America issued its first peti-tion in 2006. The group wasfounded by Atlanta financial ad-viser Steve Owings and his wifeSusan, whose son Cullum waskilled by a speeding tractor-trail-er during a trip back to school inVirginia after Thanksgiving in2002.The nonprofit was later joined

by the American Trucking Associ-ations, the nation’s largest truck-ing industry group.Owings said he will continue

to push NHTSA to force olderheavy vehicles to limit theirspeeds.“We are dismayed and out-

raged to learn the proposed rulewill be for newly manufacturedtrucks and will not apply to themillions of trucks with which wecontinue to share the roads to-day,” he said.NHTSA said retrofitting vehi-

cles made after 1990 with thespeed-limiting technology couldbe too costly, and it is still seek-ing comments and additional in-formation. NHTSA said it couldcost anywhere from $100 to$2,000 per vehicle, depending onwhen the vehicle was made.Changes to some engines couldalso be required, increasing the

costs, NHTSA said. Heavy vehi-cles made before 1990 don’thave the capacity to add thetechnology.The government agencies in-

volved will take public commentfor 60 days, then determine thefinal limit and decide if the regu-lation should be put in place.To James Chapman, a big rig

driver from Spartanburg, S.C., 68mph would be the best optionand he’d accept 65. But 60would be too big of a differencefrom cars that go 75 or more.“To me it would be a safety

hazard unless it slowed every-body else down,” he said whilerefueling his truck Aug. 26 alonginterstate 75 near Findlay, Ohio.The agencies said that limiting

the speed of heavy vehicles to60 mph could save as many as498 lives annually. Limiting it to65 mph could save as many as214 lives, and limiting it to 68mph could save as many as 96lives. There are 3.6 million bigrigs on U.S. roads.The agencies said the propos-

al is based on available safetydata and the additional benefitof better fuel economy.But Norita Taylor, spokes-

vehicles as faster cars slowdown for trucks. “Differentials inspeed increase interactions be-tween vehicles, which increasesthe likelihood of crashes,” Tay-lor said.Yet there is another com-

pelling reason to limit truckspeeds. An investigation lastyear by The Associated Pressfound that 14 states have speedlimits for big trucks that areequal to or higher than theirtires were designed to handle.Most truck tires aren’t designedto go faster than 75 mph, andtire manufacturers say travelingfaster than that can cause tiresto fail and blow out, creatingsafety issues.Most of the states with the

higher speed limits are west ofthe Mississippi River. Of the 14,five have speed limits of 80 mphor more and allow trucks to ex-ceed the capability of their tires.NHTSA has said that the

speed limiters should be able totake care of the discrepancy be-tween state speed limits andtruck tire capabilities.Most of the states with speed

limits of 80 or above either did-n’t know about the truck tirespeed ratings or didn’t considerthem.States set their own speed lim-its, having been given sole au-thority to do so by Congress inthe mid-1990s.

seen long before the race be-gins. Tristan MacKethan, a jun-ior and co-aerodynamic lead forFormula SAE’s MRacing at theUniversity of Michigan-Ann Ar-bor, said his team was able tooptimize downforce by 24 per-cent as a result of an eight-hoursession in the tunnel.Downforce improves traction

and cornering abilities, both im-portant factors in racing. Ulti-mately, this should lead tofaster lap times on the track.MacKethan, interning at Ford

Cooper Standard has enteredinto an agreement to acquire theautomotive fuel and brake busi-ness of AMI Industries and relat-ed companies.

The North American businesswas acquired in this transactioneffective Aug. 15. The acquisitionof the China portion of the busi-ness is subject to regulatory ap-proval. Terms of the acquisitionwere not disclosed, said CooperStandard spokeswoman SharonS. Wenzl .

“The integration of AMI Indus-tries’ fuel and brake business di-rectly aligns with Cooper Stan-dard’s profitable growth strategyand globally strengthens theCompany’s position to furtherservice our customers,” said Jef-frey Edwards, chairman andCEO, Cooper Standard.

AMI Industries was estab-lished in 2000 to provide tubeproducts to the agriculture, con-struction, automotive, heavytruck and marine industries,Wenzl said.

As a natural extension of thetube product line, the companyexpanded into the fuel and brakebusiness in 2008. Headquarteredin Michigan, AMI operates manu-facturing plants in Michigan, In-diana and China.

In the month of August thisyear more than 360,000 teens willbecome eligible for a restricteddriver’s license in most states –and with that, a lot of parents willexperience new levels of stress.

According to a Harris Poll sur-vey commissioned by Chevrolet,said GM spokeswoman Darri'nHardy, more parents with teensworry about their child driving(55 percent) more than any otherarea of parental stress, includingdrugs and alcohol (52 percent),sexual activity (49 percent) andacademic performance (53 per-cent).

Chevrolet recognizes this topconcern for parents and, as a re-sult, in addition to its suite ofavailable active and passive safe-ty features, offers Teen DriverTechnology on 10 of its 2017cars, trucks and SUVs, Hardysaid. Chevrolet’s Teen Driver in-cludes an industry-first in-vehiclereport card that shows how theteen drove and provides a wayfor parents to talk best practices.

Chevy Systems Aimed at Curbing Distracted Driving Issues

Chevy has solutions for the problem of teen distracted driving.

NEW YORK (AP) – VolkswagenTruck & Bus, an arm of the Ger-man automaker Volkswagen, isbuying a minority stake in Navis-tar for $256 million.

The two companies also saidSept. 6 that they will enter a pro-curement joint venture that willhelp source parts for both busi-nesses. There will also be tech-nology sharing, with an antici-pated emphasis on powertraintechnology.

Volkswagen Truck & Bus willacquire 16.2 million Navistarshares at $15.76 per share andwill be allowed to name two di-rectors to Navistar’s board. Nav-istar will remain an independenttruck, bus and engine company.

Navistar International Corp.expects savings of at least $500million over the first five years.By the fifth year, the Lisle, Ill.-based company anticipates thealliance will generate annual sav-ings of at least $200 million forits business.

The announcement of the dealcomes as Volkswagen AG is try-ing to move forward in the U.S.following an emissions cheatingscandal.

Last month it was disclosedthat about 210,000 owners ofVolkswagens with 2-liter dieselengines that cheat on emissionstests have registered to settlewith the company under theterms of a June court agreement.U.S. District Court Judge CharlesBreyer has given the $15 billionsettlement preliminary approval,with a final decision expectedOct. 18. Terms call for the Ger-man carmaker to spend up to$10 billion buying back or repair-ing Volkswagen and Audi 2-litervehicles and paying owners an-other $5,100 to $10,000 each.

Navistar has also had its ownemissions issues. In March thecompany announced that itwould pay $7.5 million to settleSecurities and Exchange Com-mission complaints about itsclaim to investors that it had de-veloped an engine that could becertified to meet U.S. emissionstandards. Navistar didn’t admitwrongdoing as part of the settle-ment.

ECORSE, Mich. (AP) – U.S.Steel is suing the state of Michi-gan over an effort to curb De-troit-area air pollution.

The Detroit News reports Pitts-burgh-based U.S. Steel sued lastmonth, saying the Michigan De-partment of Environmental Qual-ity illegally enacted a rule inJune that calls for it to submit aplan for meeting sulfur dioxidecompliance standards.

The DEQ plans to defend therule in the Michigan Court ofClaims. A 2010 federal reviewfound sulfur dioxide levels to beabove federal standards andspurred state action to scaleback area emissions. The DEQsays four other companies in ad-dition to U.S. Steel voluntarilyagreed to cut emissions..

DETROIT (AP) – General Mo-tors Co. has settled two federalcourt cases related to its defec-tive ignition switches, but its le-gal troubles stemming from theswitches are far from over.GM settled the cases for an

undisclosed amount, plaintiffs’attorney Bob Hilliard said Sept.5. In both cases, the plaintiffssaid they sustained serious in-juries when the air bags in theirvehicles didn’t deploy. GM hashas said that ignition switches inolder cars could fall out of posi-tion without warning and shut offthe engine and air bags.The cases are among several

so-called “bellwether’’trials thatare testing the legal boundariesof hundreds of claims againstGM. So far this year, one federalbellwether case was dropped be-fore trial, GM won two, and threehave been settled. Three morefederal cases are scheduled to beheard next year, and one isscheduled for January 2018, GMspokesman Jim Cain said.GM also has been trying some

bellwether cases at the state lev-el. In one of those cases, a Texasjury decided last month that aGM ignition switch wasn’t toblame for a 2011 fatal crash.GM knew about problems with

the switches for more than adecade before it finally recalled2.6 million small cars worldwidein 2014 to replace the defectiveswitches. The switches are re-sponsible for at least 124 deathsand 275 injuries, according to avictims’ fund set up by GM andadministered by attorney Ken-neth Feinberg.GM has paid nearly $875 mil-

lion to settle death and injuryclaims, including $600 millionfrom Feinberg’s fund and $275million to settle 1,385 separate

claims. It also has paid $300 mil-lion to settle shareholder law-suits. But many others are pursu-ing their claims in court.Carl Tobias, a law professor at

the University of Richmond, saidthat so far GM seems to be will-ing to try the weaker plaintiffs’cases but settle the ones that arestronger. But the company has along way to go before it resolvesall of the cases, he said.In addition to the cases al-

ready scheduled, GM could befacing lawsuits from victimswhose alleged injuries occurredbefore GM’s 2009 bankruptcy. InJuly, a U.S. appeals court ruledthat GM’s bankruptcy can’tshield the company from thoselawsuits. GM is appealing thatruling. Hilliard said at least 133pre-bankruptcy cases could bebrought against the automaker.Hilliard said the settlements

announced Sept. 5 create “mo-mentum’’ as the company andplaintiffs continue to try to re-solve the cases before them. Forits part, GM said it shares plain-tiffs’ goal of “a fair and timely res-olution of lawsuits.’’The cases settled Sept 5 both

involved women who were driv-ing at low speeds. In the firstcase, Stephanie Cockram wasdriving her 2006 ChevroletCobalt home from a friend’shouse in Virginia on June 28,2011, when she lost control ofher car and hit a stone wall. Herair bags didn’t deploy. Cockramsuffered a closed head injury,broken jaw and broken hip.In the second case, Amy

Norville lost control of her 2003Saturn Ion in Kentucky on Nov.21, 2013, when she swerved toavoid hitting a deer. Norvillecouldn’t regain control of her ve-hicle and crashed into a tree, butthe air bags didn’t deploy.Norville broke her sternum andsuffered multiple neck fractures.

LEXINGTON, Tenn. (AP) – Au-tomotive supplier Johnson Con-trols plans to phase out 290 jobsover the next two years as thecompany ends production at itsLexington plant in Tennessee.

Spokeswoman Mary Kay Do-dero tells The Jackson Sun thatthe company plans to transitionthe facility from manufacturingto a service center or ware-house.

Lexington Mayor David Jowerssaid that products made at theLexington plant had to beshipped to be painted before be-ing returned to the facility, whileanother Johnson Controls plantin Alabama is able to do the man-ufacturing and painting in-house.

The decision to end manufac-turing in Lexington comes asJohnson Controls prepares tospin off its automotive businessinto an independent companycalled Adient on Oct. 31.
