A BEECHWOOD CONTINUING CARE PUBLICATION WINTER 2019 A better way of caring. A better way of living. T he Beechwood/Blocher Foundation Auxiliary Board’s 23rd annual auction and food extravaganza delivered a magical evening for all in attendance. This year’s auction raised over $119,000 and would not have been possible without the generosity of families, friends, vendors and local businesses, as well as more than 75 volunteers. Thank you all for your generous spirit and support! This is Beechwood’s largest annual fundraiser and has raised over $2 million since its inception. Proceeds from this event go to the Living Care Fund, which helps supplement our cost of care for residents who have exhausted their personal resources and ensures that once a resident becomes a member of our Beechwood Continuing Care “family,” they remain with us for as long as they need our care…regardless of their finan- cial situation. PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Beechwood Continuing Care experienced a very strong year for all our commu-nities. We continue to actively pursue opportunities to position our Homes to serve a greater role in the provision of residential living and health care services in Western New York. We are very excited about furthering our mission to touch more lives in our community. I would like to share with you some of what we have accomplished in 2018:

Asbury Pointe Independent Living Retirement Community Thanks to the daily efforts of our marketing and operations team to provide the finest independ-

ent living experience in WNY, Asbury Pointe maintained a 98% occupancy rate last year and the waiting list of individuals and couples eager to make Asbury Pointe their home continues to grow!

Due to its pristine appearance – inside and out – it is hard to believe that Asbury opened 19 years ago. This past year, the exterior of the building received a fresh coat of paint. In addition, renovations to the Embers dining room and theater room are nearing completion. The space has been completely refreshed with new wallpaper, paint and carpeting. Use of the new, contemporary color scheme will ultimately be carried through to the main hallways and other common areas of the building.

Two years ago, thanks to the generous bequest from former Asbury Pointe resident, John Repetski, we widened and extended the beautiful walking path that meanders through the green space and wooded areas between Asbury and the Beechwood campuses. This past year, thanks to the generous bequest from former Asbury Pointe resident, Lorraine Meinke, the fountain at the entrance to Asbury Pointe has been replaced with a beautiful reflecting waterfall complete with benches and sitting areas for residents and visitors to relax and socialize. What a wonderful addition to the grand foot bridge and other adjoining seating areas along the path – to the entire outdoor living experience at Asbury Pointe!

Blocher Homes Assisted/Enhanced Living Community The Enhanced Assisted Living Residence (EALR) program operated at almost 100% occupancy in 2018. This

special program – certified by the Department of Health – allows for the enrolled resident to receive a higher level of assistance and monitoring at Blocher. This “enhanced” level of service and care can only be provided at an assisted living community that has obtained the EALR certification, and is yet another reason why the Blocher Homes living experience is so unique.

Thanks to a generous donation from the Beechwood/Blocher Foundation, the beautiful flowering crabapple trees that had forever lined the front of the facility – inspiring awe and so many personal photographs each spring – were successfully replaced last fall. While the mature trees will be missed, the new flowering trees and significant landscaping project completed as part of

the reforestation project have actually added to the facility’s curb appeal. Spring can’t come soon enough!

Beechwood Homes/Health Care Center Last year, the average daily occupancy rate for Beechwood was 96%. That is a remarkable percentage for any facility,

but it is especially impressive considering the fact that there were over 800 resident admissions to Beechwood in 2018.

As we all know, there has been a significant amount of national and local media coverage over the last six months regarding the strong correlation between staffing levels and the quality of care provided in skilled nursing facilities. Beechwood continues to invest in its most valuable asset – our exceptional staff. The average number of licensed nurse and certified nursing assistant staff hours per resident per day at Beechwood continues to far exceed both the state and national average. The table below is taken from the most recent Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) report on the average number of licensed nurse and certified staff hours per resident per day.

In 2018, the Beechwood/Blocher Foundation received two very generous gifts dedicated to the construction of the new Education Center located in the Eastview Lower Level. This state-of-the-art education space will be instrumental in furthering Beechwood’s long standing commitment to “grow our own.” In fact, because of Beechwood’s consistent staffing and history of empowering direct care staff to address resident care needs the facility was recently awarded an Advanced Training Initiative (ATI) grant from the Department of Health. With these grant funds, the facility has contracted for LeadingAge New York to provide several exciting, comprehensive health care and customer service training programs for all staff. This training will be completed in February and March of this year.

Construction of the new medical office building located on the north side of the Beechwood property was completed last spring. The medical office suite has been leased to a group of local physicians. Dr. William Healy is affiliated with MDVIP, a national network of primary care physicians delivering personalized, patient-centered medicine with an emphasis on wellness programs. Dr. Matthew Antalek, Dr. Jeffrey Frost, Dr. James Swiencicki, and Miles Sumner, PA-C of Internal Med ID Associates, LLC specialize in internal medicine including wound care and the treatment of infectious diseases.

Beechwood’s strategic objective to be an increasingly critical provider of special care services will continue in 2019. Establishing working affiliations with other health care organizations is crucial to our future success. Gaining immediate access to specialists needed to successfully provide more medically complex, post-acute care in a homelike setting for all will continue to expand and strengthen Beechwood’s presence in the ever-changing healthcare community.

H ospice Buffalo and Beechwood Homes have been collaborating to provide compassionate end-of-life care to our residents for over twenty-five years. Beechwood residents may choose to receive care from Hospice Buffalo within their own households at Beechwood where they are able to feel

comfortable and familiar within their own “home.”

What many of you may not know is that there is a dedicated hospice household – Hospice Wells House – where patients from Erie County can receive care from both Beechwood staff and the Hospice Buffalo team including nurses, social work, spiritual coun-selors, aides and even volunteers.

This wonderful partnership brings peace of mind to families knowing their loved one will receive. . .more care, more comfort and more visits from two teams working together.

The most frequent comment we hear is, “I wish I would have called hospice sooner.” For more information and/or a consult, reach out to Hospice Buffalo at 716-686-8000.

Working Together to Provide Compassionate End-of-Life Care

BCC Volunteer Spotlight: Mabel Houghton If you happen to visit the Beechwood Bistro on Fridays, you’ll be greeted with a warm smile and a helpful

attitude by longtime Bistro volunteer, Mabel Houghton.

This tiny, energetic woman with the 100-watt smile and quick wit has been a fixture at the Bistro since it opened in 2008. Her friend and staff member Bev Hill, Bistro Aide, in her infinite wisdom, recruited her!

Mabel, who is 91 years young, says volunteering is one of the secrets to staying young and fit. (Another secret is working out at the Y, which she does regularly.) “Volunteering keeps me going and keeps me thinking,” says Mabel, who lives in Williamsville. “You can’t stop moving, because if you do, you’ll forget how to start again!” She says she loves interacting with the wonderful residents and staff and is happy to help Bev, whom she’s known since they worked together 20+ years ago at a local fabric store.

Bev says, “Mabel is a very reliable, dependable volunteer – always willing to fill in at a moment’s notice if another volunteer can’t make it. There are

11 volunteers at the Bistro, which is open Monday-Friday. Volunteers are so important in an organization like Beechwood. They help out the staff tremendously, and they’re great ambassadors for us in the community.”

Beechwood Homes Awarded Grant from NYSDOH Advanced Training Initiative Beechwood Homes is proud to announce that we have been awarded a grant from the New York

State Department of Health Nursing Home Advanced Training Initiative (ATI).

The ATI program is aimed at teaching direct caregivers and ancillary staff to detect early changes in a resident’s physical, mental or functional status that could lead to health declines and/or hospitalizations. In order to be eligible for these funds, Beechwood needed to meet strict criteria including direct-care staff retention rates that exceed NYS averages and have an established commitment to lower resident hospitalization rates.

Training is provided through a comprehensive education program provided by LeadingAge New York, which represents not-for-profit, mission-driven senior care providers. LeadingAge New York’s more than 600 members employ over 150,000 professionals serving over a half a million seniors annually.

Beginning in February, several days of onsite training will be offered to all nurses, CNAs, therapists, social workers and other front-line workers including dining services, environmental services, recreation and maintenance staff.

We know that at the heart of every positive interaction is the desire to connect in a meaningful way. This is especially true between our residents and staff. Recent research demonstrates that the identification of resident preferences and the creation of meaningful relationships has a positive effect on the mental and functional outcomes of our residents. Our goal with this program is to further educate staff on the benefits of resident exchanges that are purposeful, build on these relationships and improve our resident experience.

Learning Objectives include: F Understanding how viewpoint and outlook impact the way in which we interact with others;

F Developing skills through “How Does it Feel Training” stressing empathetic listening and engaging dialogue which promotes a greater sense of independence for our residents;

F Examine the value of respect - earning and giving - to develop techniques that result in meaningful interactions.

The benefits are many...for both our residents and our staff. “This grant offers a wonderful opportunity to provide knowledge and skills for our staff to utilize in their daily interactions with our residents while building strong relation-ships,” said Daniel O’Neill, CEO/President of Beechwood Continuing Care.

According to O’Neill, “Helping staff to connect at a deeper level can improve our residents’ ability to feel happier, more satisfied, and ultimately,

healthier.”

How do you know when it’s time for assisted living?

T aking care of an elderly parent or loved one is a labor of love…but it can also be emotionally taxing as you watch the person who used to care for you become unable to care for themselves. As much as you want to help, there’s really only so much you can do before the situation becomes unmanageable and

interferes with your ability to live your own life.

How can you best determine the type of care your senior relative needs? LeadingAge Western New York has developed a senior care assessment tool that can help identify the general warning signs that tell you it might be time for assisted living or additional care.

This quick questionnaire is comprised of 11 multiple-choice questions whose answers will provide a basis for discussion for the family and healthcare providers to assist in assessing the level of care required for an elderly loved one.

You can find the questionnaire at http://www.leadingagewny.org/SeniorCareOptionsServices/SeniorCareAssessmentTool.aspx

If it is time for assisted living, please consider Blocher Homes, where your loved one will receive day-to-day care from highly trained healthcare professionals in a homelike, comfortable setting. To learn more about Blocher Homes, visit https://www.beechwoodcare.org/assisted-living
