INTRODUCTION Urban and peri-urban agriculture is a real alternative to strengthen food sovereignty of towns and cities. Now- adays many advances have been accomplished in their development and have taken centre stage either in main cities of our country as well as in small towns and villages. This alternative starts to emerge with a great potential in order to solve some of the current challenges faced by our society, and some as ecological restoration, natural resources consumption, health and nutrition, food secu- rity, environmental education, development and diversi- fication of local economy or citizen participation can be highlighted. Turning citizens into producers of their own food is an intrinsic value to this type of agriculture that helps to strengthen the link with the earth at the same time that produces positive changes in the lifestyles of its actors (food education, family and neighbourhood integration, healthy food, sustainability…). In 2011, was held the 1st State Congress on Urban and Peri-urban Ecological Agriculture in Elx (Alicante) and in 2014 was held the 2nd State Congress in Utrera (Se- villa), under the theme “Urban food gardens, self-con- sumption and social participation”. These initiatives have multiplied over the last years and are becoming much more important. For all these we appreciate the need to launch the 3rd State Congress on Urban Agriculture, to update the knowledge in this field, being the main objective to promote educational projects and to give visibility to agro-ecological projects. OBJECTIVES • To update and share knowledge and advances on urban and peri-urban ecological agricultures in Spain. • To facilitate the exchange of experiences and knowledge applied to urban and peri-urban ecological agriculture. • To discuss different uses and benefits of urban ecological agriculture. INTRODUCTION

Urban and peri-urban agriculture is a real alternative to strengthen food sovereignty of towns and cities. Now-adays many advances have been accomplished in their development and have taken centre stage either in main cities of our country as well as in small towns and villages. This alternative starts to emerge with a great potential in order to solve some of the current challenges faced by our society, and some as ecological restoration, natural resources consumption, health and nutrition, food secu-rity, environmental education, development and diversi-fication of local economy or citizen participation can be highlighted.

Turning citizens into producers of their own food is an intrinsic value to this type of agriculture that helps to strengthen the link with the earth at the same time that produces positive changes in the lifestyles of its actors (food education, family and neighbourhood integration, healthy food, sustainability…).
