Monday 12th June - DF Hunt - Derek Hills G6MFM DF Trophy

It was a glorious sunny evening and 9 members turned out to support the annual Derek Hills G6MFM DF Trophy. Discretely hidden in the woods at the end of Nork Park, Bansteadwere three 2 metre AM transmitters each transmitting their own individual ident to the hunter. With the foxes carefully laid out by Denis M0NDJ, our hounds set off to track down the foxes. Waiting for the hounds to return seemed like forever. Some returned not having found a fox and others returned having found all three. It was a great evening and my thanks go to Denis M0NDJ for organising the event and for supplying the equipment.

CATS Radio Activity Meeting – July Meeting

Having enjoyed an extended recent spell of good weather, it was suggested that for the July club night, we go up to Epsom Downs for a bit of operating. Terry G4CDY was the mastermind behind this idea and suggested we all meet in the Hut Café car park at Tattenham Corner.

Now, we all know that if it can go wrong, it will go wrong. Some may call it Murphy’s Law and other’s will call it Sods Law.

I duly arrived arrived at the car park, the one with the café at the suggested time, waited a

Page 4: “CATS WHISPERS” August 2017 Whispers August... · CATS 40th Radio & Electronics Bazaar – Sunday 19th November 2017 – 10.00am – 1.00pm The date of our 40th, yes 40th!CATS

bit and set up my Tarheel aerial. I waited and waited and at about 7.15 Andy G8JAC turned up in his Austin Champ. Where were the others? Not far away it seemed. The majority of the club membership had set up in the car park on the opposite side of the main road to where I was, in a car park with no café. So there we had it, two camps. In terms of contacts, I have to say that it wasn’t a terribly successful evening. We had tried to set up a sked with Flo G4DMA, but conditions didn’t allow us to make it. I went to school with Flo and he is KL7X living the life in Alaska and it would have been great if we could have made the contact. The only contact I had was on HF and that was with Terry G4CDY who was 200 yards away.

We did manage to make a contact with Flo via mobile phone from the Woolpack. Attached is a photo I took of CDY, JAC and JXN and return photo of Flo.

I don’t know who else turned up at CDY’s car park. I saw Biton and I think he posted a video (Biton's Youtube Video was uploaded to Youtube and can be viewed with this link https://youtu.be/TsXml040JiY )

Sutton & Cheam Radio Society Trip to Bletchley Park - DebriefAttendees: Stuart G6CJR, Alan G8UHN, Vince G1HRD plus Doug, Vince’s son, Adam G7CRQ & Steve G7SYO

Some years ago when I worked for BT, I recall going to Bletchley Park on a course. I can’t remember what the course was all about and at the time, I wasn’t aware of the significanceof Bletchley Park.

Since then, I have learned more about Bletchley Park, and the talented people that workedthere, all of whom played such an important role in bringing the war to a swift end. Bletchley Park was the wartime home to the codebreakers. It was a factory for code breaking and it is said that if it wasn’t for the mathematicians, codebreakers and everyone that worked at Bletchley Park, the war would have been extended by at least 3 years. The work of the codebreakers were unimaginable.

Later on in the afternoon, we all took a trip outside of the camp to the National Museum of Computing where Alan G8UHN used his charm on the young lady in reception to get us a vastly reduced entry into the museum. The stuff being exhibited is something else. So archaic by modern standards. http://www.tnmoc.org/

Wimbledon Club Annual Camp - 29 th July - 6 th August

Our friends from the Wimbledon & District ARS are once again spending the week at Crossways Farm, crossways Lane near to Reigate Hill from Saturday 29th July until Sunday 6th August.

This is a casual event where W&DARS club members pitch up and operate at their leisure for as long as they wish. CATS members have an express invitation to join them but there are the following conditions which should be considered;

A) The farmer locks the gate onto his site at about 10.00pm until about 6.00amto secure his land;

B) A voluntary donation be made towards the cost of fuel and rent of the site, etc.

I am sure that those on site will be able to advise when on site However, as G0KZT will be unavailable to be contacted during the period of this event, any further questions should bemade to one of our committee members.

Youngsters on the Air (YOTA) 2017The RSGB will be hosting YOTA 2017, the prestigious IARU international summer camp atGilwell Park, the UK Scouting HQ, from 5-12 August 2017

What is YOTA?

There will be 80 young people under the age of 26 from 30 countries – from all over IARU Region 1 as well as Japan —representing their national amateur radio societies at this event.

By taking part in a mix of amateur radio and intercultural activities, the young people will be able to build relationships with like-minded people from other countries and develop international friendships through amateur radio—and have a lot of fun!

Steve Bunting, M0BPQ who is the Station Manager for GB2GP at Gilwell Park will be thereat the YOTA camp operating a five-band Special Event Station running from morning to night with the call sign GB17YOTA. The RSGB has provided awards for those who make contact – so listen out for the young people on air that week!

CATS has supported the event financially by matching pound for pound, members donations and has contributed £40 to towards their running costs.
