DETAILS OF WORK DONE

Vasavi Clubs International, formerly known as International Association of Vasavi Clubs is aInternational network of 1035 Clubs across the country and overseas. The clubs are mainly locatedin the districts of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Orissa, Tamilnadu, Yanam, Haryana,New Delhi. However 24 Vasavi Clubs are located outside India with limited service activities. TheAssociation is involved in various developing activities for building a Stronger and Self ReliantSociety.

The Association does not believe in developing programmes that are less useful to the Society. Astrong effort is made to identify gaps in provision of services, and not duplicate efforts of otherNon Governmental organisations or even the Government programmes. The Association worksclosely with othe organisations to realise its mission of responding to the serious needs of peoplewith disablities. One such example is Vijayawada chapter of the Association partnered with theDistrict Rehabilitation Centre - DRC, Krishna Dist. Andhra Pradesh in provisioning the mostnecessary element of physical rehabilitation supports to the poor disabled persons the artificial limbs.

Vasavi Clubs International is provisioning the most necessary element of physical rehabilitationsupports to the poor disabled persons, the artificial limbs.

Total Number of Persons with Disabilities who benefitted from theArtificial Limbs provided by the Association is 4,639

Social Welfare, Vocational training and empowerment of persons with disabilities is on top of theagenda for Vasavi Clubs International. The very beginning of the Association started in the year1993 began with reaching out to the needs and aspirations of persons with disabilities. The objectiveof promoting Self Employment for the poor, turned out to be a corner stone for empowerment ofpersons with disabilities. Other programmes like Awareness, Education, focusing on the healthawareness of the poor communities esentially based itself on the premise that prevention ofdisability is possible through increasing awareness amongst the poor communities.

All most all our local chapters provide direct services to persons with disabilities accross thecountry. The service provision is one through the community based rehabilitation model. Throughthe specially establised centres, persons with disabilities avail the necessary services, and the keyaspect is the issue of inclusion.

All the services are provided within their community and is based on the assumption that thepersons with disabilities are part and parcel of the community and every service provided to themwill have to be provided to them within their own community. This principle is our institutionalvalue and being promoted as a community based rehabilitation initiative.

The following are the list of various rehabilitation and medical infrastructure built to reach out topersons with disabilities in inclusive settings.

1. Vasavi Charitable Hospital is being run at Dharmavaram in Anantapur Dist. Daily anaverage of 250 outpatients are being provided free medical care.

2. Govt. Urban Health Post is being maintained by the Association at Siddipet in MedakDistrict which is adjudged as the Best Maintained Health Post in Andhra Pradesh by WorldHealth Organisation team in the year 1997.

3. Vasavi Diagnostic Centre is being run at Secunderabad. It provides Pathological tests such asX-Ray, ECG at free of cost to the poor & needy. Serving approximately 2500 patients a month.

4. Vasavi Charitable Hospital is being run at Penugonda in West Godavari Dist. which isserving an average of 150 patients with specialisation in Cardiac Care and general treatment.

5. Vasavi Typewriting & Shorthand Institute is run at Warangal Town. We impart free coursesto all the students. This institute is recognised by the Govt. of A.P. Till date 5,000 students havequalified from this Institute.

Book -Banks for Physically challenged and economically weaker students : 50 Book Bankswith total books of over 6,235 sets of books from Intermediate level to Post Graduation level areprovided freely to economically backward and Physically challenged students. The Books will beprovided for the total period of course i.e. 3 to 5 years for each student. These Book Banks areestablished at various Districts in Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Tamilnadu.

CONTRIBUTIONS

Right from the beginning of the Association (1993), it was the programme for empowerment ofpersons with disabilities that made 35,139 of its members take pride in reaching out to morenumber of people. Most significant aspect of the programme is that Vasavi Clubs Internatioanl iscompletely self-financed, independent and self managed institution. By stating this, the Associationgains immense respect amongst the general community members. The Association has taken upvarious welfare activities exclusively for the Disabled Persons and providing them with various supports.

In brief the following are the broad programmes focusing on persons with disabilities :1. Early detection and medical assesments programmes2. Referral services for persons with disabilities and others requiring intensive interventions by

the hospitals and other institutions.3. Educational services - special education, scholarship support and books, stationery and some

times basic food and living supports4. Specialised appliances supports for children, young men and women, and adults for aids and

appliances like; crutches, tricycles, artificial limbs, hearing aid, walkers and spectacles.5. Medical remediation - including medicines, basic counselling, surgical interventions like

cataracts, orthopaedic surgeries and other major surgeries.6. Vocational/technical education supports and scholarships for higher education7. Employment assistance, loans and grants for small businesses, other Self employment

assistance like bank linkage, direct loans and technical supports for successful businessmanagement.

8. Partial or Full Assistance for building rehabilitation and educational infrastructural supports;for regular schools, special schools and for building class rooms and school buildings.

Initiating comprehensive services for people with various disabilities :

Around the country, in all its clubs the Association follows the rehabilitation protocols as follows :

Assesment and Diagnostic services: The first critical appraisal for identification and follow up ofpersons with disabilities is taken up as a universal step accross the medical camps. Once the personshaving disabilities are identified, the second step of referrals for appropriate medical interventionslike medicines, surgical referrals, and importantly for provision of therapy and appliances is takenup.

In fact the Association following its unique service model takes up the individuals for further educa-tion, vocational education and at later stage for self employment supports.

One strongest component of disability initiatives of the Association is fitting up aids and appliancesfor disabled persons. Crucially, the Association engages services of the various voluntaryorganisations involved in manufacturing of the appliances for supply and fitment. Thereby estab-lishing proper linkage between the producer and the final consumer. Also by diversifying variousneeds in terms of the aids and appliances Association is able to network appropriately with agenciesinvolved in rehabilitation, for optimising on the resources available.

Critical role of the local level Associations play is that of follow up service support through theidentified agencies. Being located in the smallest towns of the state, there is high accessibility on thepart of the E.C. members of club for any service required from the beneficiaries. The Associationalso ensures that the infrastructure that is available locally is also made use to the fullest potential.The objective is to ensure that the true convergance of services happen within the framework ofavailability. It is of tremendous value to understand that this approach is working with greatestamount of coordination for the simple reason that entire community is involved in the process. TheAssociation undetakes the responsibility of raising the necessary monitory resources requiredof the demand, and also of infrastructual requirements,the appliance workshop takes care of themanufacturing the aid, and the local agency whether a school or a service organization ensures thatthe follow up service is provided to the beneficiary.


In each of the case, total assessment method adopted ensures that the person needing the appliance,may also requre a scholarship to purse education, a special school for educational reinforcement,and a hostel for long term stay. All these requrements are responded postitively by the Association.This is the unique and true strength of the Association - This is where unconditional support isoften extended for a longer period of 4-5 years. Hence it may be concluded that the services ofthe Association focuses on servicing the individual with disability with a recognition that he or she isa person with several needs requiring multi faceted interventions, and not just an aid or an appliance.

The types of the Rehabilitation aids provided by the Association are :Tricycles, Crutches, Spectacles, Hearing aids, Artificial limbs, Walkers.

Total No. of persons provided with crutches are 3,166 pairs

This uniqueness of the Associations’ work with persons of disabilities is to do with its ability tosupplement with other relevant crucial services. Such person would benefit out of it unlike a typicalwelfare body just dumping one service or item (regardless of the needs, most of the service organi-zations end up stocking up a pile of appliances, not useful for the local beneficiaries without usingthem beacuse they don’t truly benefit form it!)

The Association also focuses its efforts on endlessly looking for potential partners in its work; theschools, scouts and guides, colleges, hospitals, homes for the aged and so on.

EDUCATION

The Association undertakes various activities to encourage students who cannot afford to go forHigher education in spite of qualifying. The Association distributes free School Uniforms, NoteBooks & Other Stationery Items to the poor & needy students. Meritorioues students are givenscholarships and cash awards are given to meritorious students.

Vasavi Sawaswathi Padhakam : Under Saraswathi Padhakam (Educational Scheme), the keyeducational mandate for all the chapters is to enable local schools focus their attention on disabilityrelated education. One of the critical infrastructural inputs extended by the Associations is buildingclass rooms for schools for mental disabilities.

Book Banks to provide the Text Books to the students of Intermediate and Higher Studies. TheBook Banks will be financially assisted by the National Body on matching grant basis to the Clubs toan extent of Rs. 5,000/- to each club in each year or 50% of the Project Cost upto a maximum ofRs. 10,000/- per project per annum.

Also in the areas of Medical, Health and Surgical intervention : The Association is involved i norganizing free Medical Camps and in distributing free Medicines to population living in the remoterural areas & slums of major towns and cities in Andhra Pradesh. Association also conducts Poliovaccination camps, Blood donation camps, Dental Camps in remote areas.

In Terms of the Surgeries, 412 persons underwent surgical interventions.

Partnership with other private corporations for promotion of Self-Employment: The uniqueself employment scheme was introduced in the year 2004-05 with the financial support of GMRVara Laxmi Foundation for starting a business activity or improving their existing one. Interest freeloan of Rs. 15,000/- to each beneficiary is to be repaid in 15 monthly instalments. Till date 21,520beneficiaries have availed the scheme.

In addition to this our local Association extend self employment supports by providing sewingmachines, wet grinders & the necessary financial assistance to the needy women. The Associationencouraged a large number of persons with disabilities income generating assets like sewing ma-chines and wet drivers. They were provided to help these poor women earn their livelihoods bysatying back at homes.

A total of 19,375 persons were provided with Sewing Machines and Wet grinders


Public Awareness Campaigns on various social evils: The Organization intends to createawareness among people living in Rural & Urban areas in the field of Hygiene, Health & educationand the ill effects of Social evils such as Tobacco, Alcohol and Aids by organising “No TobaccoDay”, “Aids Awareness Day”, “No Smoking Day”.

Another most important aspect of the Assocaion is the close ties with the communities, and thegovernments as well; The respective Individual chapters have; whether schools (VCI has built 3schools one for the blind children, one for the mentally retarded and one for a governmentschool for girls), home for the aged (Association has built a home), rehabilitaion centre andspecial schools (Association has built a building for the blind, and mentally retarded), Hospi-tals (VCI manages an urban health post).

Focus on visual disability and other problems : Considering that the most of Association mem-bers are located in the small towns and large villages, need expressed by the local communities allalong has been the camps for identification of visual problems; cataract, blindness, and other treat-able problems. As part of prevention of blindness campaign and the mass awareness programmes,the Association has been able to rech out large number of needy poor people. To respond to theirneeds the following specific program were taken up in association with L.V.Prasad Eye Institute,Chiranjeevi Blood Bank, and several other local and national visual rehabilitation centres.

During the surgeries, the role of members the Vanitha wings members (the exclusive women mem-ber wing) in responding to other needs like clothes, utensils, and distribution of fruits and fooditems is quite appreciatable.

Another important programme that goes along in all the major occasion is the blood donationcamps. All the 1,035 chapters around the country, the blood donation camps are organized on everyimportant community event, making it a huge bridge between needy people and donors.

The total number of Blood units collected over the last 20 years is 78,387 units


The Polio eradication programme is strongly advocate by the Association, and all the 1,035 clubswere expected to play their roles in organizing and helping the communities and the governments indetecting the polio and finally eradicating the evil virus from the country.

International Disability Day : The key goal of the Association in its work on diability is to includeDisabled Persons in the mainstream of the Society. That is the key reason why all its programmesand assistance to the persons with disabilities are part and parcel of the community affairs.

The Association makes it a point to observe 3rd December as The International Disability Daytogether with the various partners in all the local chapters. Even the events like Independence Dayand the Republic Day Celebrations are held mainly at Institutes for persons with disabilities. On theoccasion of the International Disability Day every year, the Association Organizes camps for detec-tion, need assessment, distribution of various appliances like Crutches, Tricycles, Hearing aid to theneedy beneficiaries outside the regular programmes of the Association. During these occasions,several other needs are responded becase of high volunteerism of members and communities likethe distribution of educational and basic articles to various children of local schools for the Blindand Deaf & Dumb.

A BRIEF ACCOUNT

Vasavi Clubs International formerly known as IAVC was formed on 3rd January 1993 as an apexbody to administer the Vasavi Clubs with the sole aim of serving the persons of Disabilities, underprivileged, and focusing on their needs in the areas of Education, Health Care, Self Employment &at the unfortunate times of Natural Calamities and Disasters. Since its inception the Vasavi Clubshad gained momentum and witnessed a stupendous growth making Total No of Clubs as 1035 ason date.Growth of Vasavi Clubs & its activities had increaed manifold to Fellowship, Leadership andPersonality Development. Social Service activities were given utmost importance.

* 1st Vanitha Club was started in Vizianagaram in the year 2001-02 to provide equal leadershiprights to women.

* 1st Couples Club started to encourage couples to become effective partners in service activitiesalso.

* In the year 2004-05 a Teen’s club was started at Visakhapatnam for the age group of 13 to 19years.

Formation of Districts : As the organisation grew in strength with about 92 clubs, a lot of planninghad gone into the reorganisation of the administrative mechanism by the formation of DISTRICTSwhich came into operation from 01.04.2000. The International Governing Board was formed formanning the administration of various Districts.

The International body is headed by the INTERNATIONAL PRESIDENT elected at theInternational Convention. The International President nomiates the International Officers whichconstitues the International Governing Board(IGB) to monitor the activites of Districts and makingand implementing the policies of organisation.

International Executive Body will personally attend to the Service Projects done in different places;besides Goodwill vists to Vasavi clubs by International President. 239 Good will visits have beendone by the present International President Vn.Aitha Ramulu throughout the country for monitor-ing and pursuing the functioning of Vasavi clubs at base level.

Nine dedicated staff members are working in the office to look after various activites of VasaviClubs at field level and the total administration of the Association.

In view of increasing volume of services and for smooth and effective functioning of VCI, Wehave hired a Retired Senior Personnel of a Nationalised Bank as Chief Exective Officer.

Our Organisation Website was introduced in March 2005, where as Secretariat office was fullycomputerised in the year 2006-07; Inception of advanced technology helped all our Clubs at grassroot level in submitting various controlling returns such as CMRs, and the required data by way ofForm No. 1006 and 1008 etc., to the apex body.

Training Programmes : In the year 1995-96, our Association Leaders felt Training and Leadershipqualities for management is the need of the hour and thus introduced the same initially to the thenOfficers. A Number of other Training Programmes were also introduced to energise and empoweryouth to execute their responsibilities at high motivational level.

K C G F(K.C.GUPTA FELLOW)

The greatest honour VCI can bestow is its recognition of an individual as K.C.Gupta Fellow. KCGFwas introduced in the year 1995 to raise Corpus fund in the name of Founder Late K.C.Gupta.

The KCGF donors receives a pin and a plaque featuring Vasavi Monogram, Photo of K.C.Guptaand the Donor’s name will be inscribed on the plaque.

As on date VCI holds 20142 KCGFs - voluntary contributions from our members only. We havemade Fixed Deposits amounting to Rs.431.03 lakhs at various Nationalised Banks. The interestearned on the Corpus funds will only be spent at the time of Natural Calamities and for the purposeof Educational Assistance to Intermediate and above courses under the banner of Vasavi SaraswathiPathakam on Matching grant basis to the clubs.
