It’slookinglikealovelyday,andI’mwalkinginwiththe“toppathteam”,asIthinkit’smylast
opportunitytoshootworkattheBealachforthisseason.Thejourneyisbecomingfamiliarnow.Afew
mileslaterandwe’reoffthetrackandchattingtothe“lowerpathteam”brieflybeforethefinalassault
ontheNorthFace.Thispartofthejourneyalwayssplitsthefield,asweallhaveourownspeedupthe
gully.
Partwayupthegully,IseeRabwithhisheaddowninatinyburn;hesignalsthatIshouldbequiet,and
I’mthinkingthathe’sfoundsomewildlife.I’mtotallyfascinatedwhenIfindoutthathe’smakingasound
recordingofthewatertricklingitswaydownhill,andthatitspartofacollectionhe’scompilingonhis
travels.Everyrecordingisunique,heexplains.Yes,he’sproperlyappreciatingsomethingthatweall
takeforgranted,andIlovetheidea.

Attheridge,theteamdividesintotwo:tidyingupafewsparebouldersbydiggingtheminfornext
year,andwinchingfiveorsixdownaterriblyerodedsectiontofinishafewstepsbelow.Thesungets
hotter,andaMerlinscreamspast.Thewinchingisslow,tediousandprecarious.Itpausesseveraltimes
whilstwalkersclimbuppastthedangerzone.

Theworkersstopforlunch,andItaketheopportunitytogetontothesummittorecordthedamagefrom
therecentwildfire.Neartothebealach,itsveryblackindeed,butalreadygreenshootsarebursting
through.Thesummitpathwasthefireboundary;incineratedtothesouthandcompletelyuntouchedto
thenorth.Theviewfromthecairnisasstunningasever,butI’mastonishedtolookdownonthehuge
swatheofburntvegetationbetweenmeandSchoolLoch.I’mastonishedbecauseIstruggletoseethe
damageatall,andIknowthatthecamerawon’tpickitup.Suchaninferno,andinamerethreeweeks
thewoundsarehealingrapidly.Atleastfortheflora;thefaunamaytakelongerIguess.
Twowalkerswanderawayfromtheirrucksackstotakephotos,andabigglossyravenappearsfrom
nowhere.Itlandsnearbyandrunstowardsthebags.“Heyfellas,anyfoodlefthere?”Ishout.Theywalk
backandtheravenpicksupthepace,determinedtobeatthem,butbottlesoutatthelastmoment!
I’vespenttoolonguphereandgetbacktofindtheworkersgettingreadytoleave.We’reallbakedand
sweaty.Atthebottomofthegullythere’salovelylochwithasandybeach;theotherswerealreadyinit
bythetimeIarrived.AmIgettingin?Checkforwildhorses.Nope,nonehere.Thatwassooooogood!

It’ssixweekssincemyfirstvisitonthatcold,wet,muddydayandthelandscapewasstillwearingits
brownwintercloak.Notanymore!Lotsofgreenlushnessandflowersblooming.Heathspottedorchids
linethetrack,andthere’ssundewinthewetditchesatthesides.
Iseelotsofwalkerstoday,alltakingadvantageoftheperfectconditionsforatriptothetop.
JoiningAndyandMark,they’remakingpaceacrossthepeat,thefinishedworksnakingbacklikea
ribbon.Everyoneofthewalkersusesit.Thepathismakingtheirjourneyeasieranddrier.Ofcourse,
themainbenefitisthatthey’renottramplingacrossawideswatheofboggygroundanymore,andthe
recoveryhasalreadystarted.
WatchingAndydrivethedigger,Icanseehe’snonovice;whetherit’sgravellytopdressingorturf,each
bucketfularriveswithamazingprecision.

OneoftheregularvisitorstothewritingretreatshasbeenColinWill,apoetbasedinDunbarwhoisa
ZenBuddhistandmuchinspiredbyorientalartistictraditions.WehavetalkedalotaboutSuilvenasa
sourceofart,andwonderwhetherasScotland’siconicmountainitcouldeverachievetheglobalstatus
ofMountFiji.
ThereisaclassicseriesofprintsbytheJapaneseartist,Hokkusai,called’36ViewsofMountFiji’.
Suilvenclearlydeservesitsownsimilartribute,andoneyearwehadtheperfectopportunity.ColinWill’s
72ndbirthdayfellduringoneoftheretreats.IntheChinesetradition,72isahugelysignificantage.
Mostofuswillbefamiliarwiththefactthat12-yearcyclesareimportantandeachyearit’stheyearofa
differentanimal,inacycleof12animals.SointheChinesesystemour12th,24th,36th,48thand60th
birthdaysareintheyearofourbirthanimal.Our72ndbirthdaycompletesthe6thcycleandistheage
atwhichwebecomeofficiallyasage.

It’seasytomissthesethingswhensummitfevergripsyoubutseeingandhearingthewildlifearound
Suilvenhasopenedmyeyestohowmuchmoreisoutthere.Oldlongdeadpinerootsnearthepath
alsoremindmehowmuchmorelifehaslivedoutthereinthepastandhowmuchmorecouldlivethere
now.
Whiletheoldpinerootsdiedandgotburiedinpeatthousandsofyearsagoastheclimatechanged,
nowadaystheabsenceofwoodlandismoredowntohumanintervention.However,thepresenceof
treeswhereverthereisaledgeoragullythatgivesthemprotectionfromherbivoresgivesmehopethat
withappropriatemanagementournativewoodlandandallthespeciesthatliveinitcouldslowlycome
back.
ThestartofthewalkouttoSuilventakesyouthroughthenewlyplantedareaaroundGlencanispLodge.
I’vebeenwatchingoverthelastseveralmonthsasthefencewentupandtheseedlings–oak,hazel,
birch,rowan,alderandmore–havebeensteadilyplanted.It’lltakeawhilebutit’sthestartof
somethingandasIcontinuetoventureouttoSuilvenIlookforwardtowatchingthetreesgrow,the
woodlanddevelopandmyriadbirdsreturnandfindahomethere.

AsIclimbupintothehills,alongpathsliketheoneupSuilven,I’msureI’mnottheonlyonetoreflectnot
onlyonmyliteralfootprints,butalsoonmywiderimpactsontheworld.There’ssomethingaboutgetting
outintonaturethathelpsusponderthebigquestions.AsIlookdownacrossthesplendidAssynt
landscape-acnocan-lochantapestrystuddedwithjewels–Ifeelclosertotheearthanddon’twant
anythingtodamageit.
Abigwalkgivesustimetothinkthingsthrough,toshapedirectionswewillpursuewhenwereturnto
normallife,toclarifyouraspirationsandworkoutournextsteps.Ideallywehavetimeinthedayto
achieveastateofanimalsimplicity,simplymovingourbodiesandusingalloursensestoobservewhat
weencounter–thetextureoflichens,thesoundofaptarmigan,thepineapple(orisitcoconut?)
fragranceofgorsewaftingupfromGlencanisponawarmbreeze,andthetasteofthechocolatebar
rewardatthesummit.
Ourimpactsonearthfeellessonsuchdays–wearen’tdriving,we’reprobablymakingminimaluseof
gadgetsandarecarryingtheminimalamountofstuff.Weeatsimplefoodanddrinkwaterfromarain-
fedsparklingburn.Wepackupoursandwichandbiscuitwrappersandtakethembackdownthe
mountain,leavingonlyfootprintsbehindus.
Ofcourse,overtime,thecumulativeimpactofallofourfootprintsaddsuptosomething.Thepathup
Suilvenhaseroded.Rarebryophytesonthenorthsideofthemountainbecomethreatenedbytheever-
wideningbraidoftracks.Andthisdamageiscurrentlybeingrepaired.

all.Ihaveafriendwhoisfondof
sayingthattheonlywaytohave
noimpactistobedead.Butwe
can,andweneedtobe,conscious
ofourimpactsandtrywherewe
cantokeepourfootprintsaslight
aspossible.
TheNorthCoast500routehas
madeahugeincreaseinthe
numberofroadmilesbeingdriven
inourarea,andtheirfossilfuel
emissionsmusthaveincreased
accordingly.ButIliketohopethat
manyofthesevisitorshavecome
hereandclimbedSuilvenorthe
othermountains,pushing
themselvesbypureanimalmuscle-
powertothespectacularview
manyhundredsofmetresabove
sealevel,insteadofjettingoff
thousandsofmetresupintheskyin
anaeroplanetosomedistant
clime.Ifso,theyhaveprobably
usedlessfossilfuelasaresult.And
hopefullytheywillhavebeen
inspiredbythisgloriouspartofthe
planetandcomedownthehillwith
arenewedcommitmenttolivinga
moreenvironmentallyfriendlylife.
Hopefullyitallbalancesout.
Onething’sforsure.Oncethe
pathworkiscomplete,yourliteral
footprintsupSuilvenwillmake
muchlessimpactthantheywould
havemadebefore.
Thinkingmorebroadly,ofcoursetherepairworkitselfhasanenvironmentalimpact:rockhasbeen
quarriedandliftedinbyhelicopter,andmachineshavebeenburningfuel.Evenrepairing
environmentaldamageleavesafootprint.AssyntFoundationistryingtodoourbit–wehavesolar
panelsonGlencanispLodgeroofandahydro-electricityprojectinourplans.Butofcourse,wehave
vehiclesandheatingsystemstoo.

tonnesofrocksandsoil,buildingaruggedmountainpathusingtechnicalunderstandingandanartistic
naturebasedcreativitytomakeitlook‘right’,tomakeitlookliketheirworkbelongsonthesideofa
Scottishhill.

oftonnesofmaterialsaround
toimprovetheSuilvenpath.
Whatwasonceatrampled
routeacrossboggyground,
upto30mwideinplaces,is
nowarobustbutnatural
lookingpaththatyoucan
walkwithoutsinkingupto
yourkneesin.
Theworkhasbeen
undertakenaspartofthe
Coigach&AssyntLiving
LandscapePartnership(CALLP)
Schemewiththeaimof
haltingtheongoinglossof
vegetationanderosionofsoil
alongthepathline.Asthere
wasnoreal‘path’assuchto
Suilven,justanevolvedroute
acrossthemoorland,thishas
involvedsubstantialworkto
layaproperpathsurface
whichwalkerswilluseand
wanttostickto.

andstabilisingsteepmobileground.TheworkhasmadeahugedifferenceandthewalkouttoSuilvenis
muchnicernowthatyoudon’thavetopickyourwaythroughpeathagsanddeeppuddles.Thesecond
phaseoftheworkwillbecarriedoutovertheSpringandSummerof2018whichwillseethepathtothe
footofSuilvencompletedandfurtherworktostabilisesomeofthesteeploosegrounduptotheridge.

projectbegan.

Suilvenisabillionyearsold,butthatmakesitayoungstercomparedtotheLewisiangneissonwhichit
sits!ThebedrockofgneissthatrufflesoutacrossAssyntisamongtheoldestrocksonearth,morethan3
billionyearsold,olderthanrecognisablelife.Itisametamorphicrock,formeddeepwithintheearth’s
crustwheremineralswereundergreatpressure.Youcanseetheresultingbeautifulpatterns,swirlsof
pinkandblack,inmanyplacesinAssynt.
Overthatfoundation,grittysandstonelayersbuiltupovermillionsofyearsasparticlesofstoneeroded
fromamassive,long-vanishedmountainrange(outinwhatisnowtheAtlantic),flowingdownriversto
bedepositedinlakes.Thesesedimentsgraduallybecamesandstone.Aroundabillionyearsago,the
resultingsandstonedepositswereincrediblythick:theywereonceashighastheHimalayasaretoday.
Isn’titamazingtothinkthatAssyntusedtobecoveredbysevenoreightkilometresofrock?Mostofthis
hasinturnbeenerodedaway,bywind,waterandice,sonowonlythelittlestumpsoftheAssynt
mountainsremain.
Mostofthebiggermountainshaveacapofquartzite,whichishalfasyoungagain,amerehalfa
billionyearsold,andthesecapshelpedthemountainstoresistsomeoftheerosive,sculptingpowerof
ice.ButSuilvendoesnot.Itcanthereforeclaimtohavetheoldestsummit.
Theseancientrocksarewhatourintrepidpathbuildershavebeenworkingwith.Spareathought,if
you’reoutthereonthepath,thatthejourneyupthemountaintraversesbillionsofyears.Fromthat
perspective,thewalkinmaynotseemquitesolong–whatareafewhours?
