ANZAC Day

The alarm clock went off at 4:30am – and I silently groaned knowing that it was a cold morning outside. A brief battle in the mind, and it was out of bed for a quick shower, and then dressed for the occasion. The wreath is carefully placed in the boot of the car and then

it was down to Caroline Springs to the new ANZAC memorial by the lake. At the lake I met up with the College Captains – Lara Beatrice Yanto and

Lawrence Lam – and we got ready for the program. It began with the haunting sounds of the Dixie Chicks singing “Travelin’ Soldier”, a song about a young lady whose soldier boyfriend doesn’t survive the war. While the lyrics are certainly appropriate and the music is beautiful I wonder whether anyone else thinks the American music is out of place as I listen to the birds overhead in the gum trees.

After a couple of speeches, a few prayers, the Last Post and a minute’s silence it was time for all the wreaths to be laid and Lara and Lawrence represented our College and along with others paid our respects to the fallen and those who have served. The program finished up with the New Zealand and Australian national anthems being sung.

After the program we were privileged to meet Allan Godfrey who had served in many places including Darwin, Malaysia and New Guinea. At 96 years of age Allan was not only in remarkably good health, he certainly put a human face to the whole ANZAC experience.

Oh was it cold outside? At around 10º C it was a chilly start to the day, but when we compare it to the hardship endured by the diggers and the men and women who have served our country in so many places around the world, it seemed such a small thing after all. Perhaps to put things in context we can recall the words spoken by Jesus when he said, Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends (John 15:13). By the way, that’s exactly what He did do for you and me.

It’s worth a thought.

our PB4L values during pickup and drop off times before and after school. Please ensure that if you are picking your child up and parking outside of the school property that you are parking in the appropriate places and not double parking. Unfortunately, there are a number of parents who are double parking which is a very dangerous practise.

Recently we have seen an increase in the number of people that using their mobile phones whilst driving. It is important to remember that you are modelling appropriate and inappropriate behaviours to you children.

worn in Term 2. Due to our unpredictable weather in Melbourne we have a two week period where either summer or winter uniform may be worn. However, it must be either complete summer uniform or complete winter uniform, not a mixture of the two.

SWIMMINGBeginning next week

needs to wear their swimwear underneath their sports uniform (one piece bathers for girls). They also need to bring underwear, towel, thongs/sandals, swim cap (optional), googles (optional).

YEAR 6 PUBERTY INFORMATION NIGHT

On Tuesday 21st May we will be having a Year Six Puberty information night. This will commence at 6:30pm in the Year 3/4 building. On this night we will cover topics such as physical and emotional changes, hygiene and how to support your child as they go through these changes. It is a requirement that all Year Six students and parents attend. We will be giving out 1 PEP hour on the night.

PB4L - GOTCHA CARDSAs we continue to

focus on our 3R’s – Respect, Responsibility and Resilience, we are excited to announce that this week we launched the ‘GOTCHA Cards’ initiative. When students are playing at recess and lunchtime, the yard duty teachers are looking for students who are demonstrating our values. These students will be given a ‘GOTCHA card’ which will then be placed into our lucky dip box. Each Monday morning, two cards will then be randomly drawn and the lucky two students will get to choose from a box of special prizes. This is another initiative that we are doing at Gilson College to promote a respectful and harmonious environment.

ANZAC Service held in the Gym on Wednesday this week.

SCHOOL UNIFORMSTerm 2, students should

have begun the school term wearing full winter uniform.

DRESSWe would appreciate

parents working with your student, checking the uniforms for cleanliness and preparing them for the new term.

Young ladies are to wear long Navy blue socks or navy blue tights, both are available from the uniform shop. It would be appreciated if the length of young ladies winter skirts are checked and alterations are made during the holidays. Modesty is the rule of thumb with acceptable length touching the top of the knee, when standing tall.

SHOESIt is also a good time to

remind parents that school shoes should be black polishable leather. Many students are wearing canvas shoes or shoes which look more like runners than formal dress polishable black shoes.

JEWELLERYThe student hand book

outlines the schools stand on jewellery. Girls are allowed a single stud in each year and piercings are not acceptable

for the male students. There are number of students who have made the choice to have piercings and then have them covered with bandaids

It would be appreciated if parents noted that this will not be accepted in Term 2. All students will be asked to follow the school protocols and wear only the jewellery permitted. If students refuse to take out additional jewellery they may be sent home until it is removed and the guidelines of the school are followed.

SPORT UNIFORMPlease note that the

school sport uniform is only worn on the day each student has Sport. When students have Health and Physical Education, the students are expected to wear full dress uniform and change for their Health and Physical Education. We would appreciate parent support in ensuring the students come to school in their correct uniforms.
