HEPHAESTUS is the Greek name for the Roman
god of the forge, Vulcan. Birmingham has the
world’s largest iron statue, that of the Roman god,
Vulcan. We named our Starfleet chapter the
Hephaestus to give us ties to our city and to Star
Trek, which has had its own Vulcan since 1966.
Hephaestus forged armor and weapons for the gods.
We create our own “armor and weapons” here, in
our newsletter, so it is called The Anvil.
The Anvil, Issue 265, is the monthly newsletter of
the USS Hephaestus, NCC-2004, of Starfleet, The
International Star Trek Fan Association. All terms
and phrases from Star Trek are owned by
Paramount Pictures Corporation, a division of
Paramount Communications and all rights are
reserved.

Well it’s October and time to look in the closet to see what you want to be for Halloween. I love to dress up in costume. I just wish I had a better way to get them made. Some of you may have seen my Classic Star Trek Uniform. I have never been able to get the strips right for the outfit. I did finally get the emblem right. I have included my review of the new show Agents of S.H.E.I.L.D. I know its not Star Trek but it does have a Science Fiction slant to it. Science Fiction has always had trouble on television but I think it’s getting better. For Science Fiction this year we have Agents of S.H.E.I.L.D. and the Tomorrow People; for Fantasy we have the new Once Upon a
Time in Wonderland; for those into Horror we have Sleepy Hallo, Dracula, plus The Originals which is a spin-off of The
Vampire Diaries. It looks like the geeks are taking over TV. If you want to submit a review for any of the new shows I will be glad to print them in the Anvil. Also any articles or stories you might want to share. As always see you around the ship, Capt. MarkAdam Miller [email protected]

We have had some beautiful autumn weather. Let’s hope it continues. In case you somehow missed the
announcement of the results of the Vote of Confidence for our CO, I’m pleased to report a unanimous vote of
approval. Congratulations to MarkAdam Miller.
Starfleet members, please remember to vote for the team you think is best qualified to run Starfleet. Your
choices are Killough/Bates or Rickard/Willcox. There was information on each team in the package with the
ballots. Your ballot must be received no later than November 15, 2013.
Also, I’m looking forward to our Fall Feast coming up in November. Watch the list. Pete will post all the
details there.
That’s all this time folks.

September 14, 2013 Social
The social was held at the Mohney’s home. The usual food and drinks were provided. We played ”The Bang Big Theory Clue” game. The object of the game is to fine out who damaged what item of Sheldon’s and in what room. It was a fun game to play until there was no winner because we realized in the end that we had one room, 2 damaged items and no suspect.
Attendance: 10 people.
Personnel Updates:
If you have any news or accomplishments you would like to share with the group please email them to me at: [email protected]. Also your personal updates can give your Captain added info to help get you recognition and an award at summit for your accomplishments.
SSttaarrfflleeeett MMaarriinnee CCoorrppss Greetings,
Unit activities:
MGen Yawn and wife Lt Youngblood-Yawn visited the Florida State park Grayton Beach where they tent
camped for several days. MGen Yawn preformed 18 hours in voluntary service for the Brookside Fire Rescue
Service.
The 654th MSG is looking for members. There is a completely different set of Academy schools for those trying to get
the Boothby awards. There is no pressure in joining. There are two categories: Active which means all ranks will be
Marine ranks, and Reserve which mean you stay primary Fleet and only use Marine ranks when doing marine stuff.
Contact Major General Neil Yawn if you are interested or have questions.
Looking to boost your Boothby Awards? The Starfleet Marines Academy may be your answer. Check out what SFMC
Academy has for you.

Wrist Communicators
Did you always want a wrist communicator like Dick Tracy’s? Samung is making it available as a
Galaxy Gear Smart Watch. What does this have to do with Star Trek? In its promotion for the watch Samsung
shows a clip of the wrist communicator from Star Trek The Motion Picture. Other Sci-Fi shows shown were
Jetsons, Knight Rider, Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers and Inspector Gadget.(trektoday.com)

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
*****(Warning there may be spoilers)*****
Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. is new series from Joss Whedon that picks up after the Avengers movie. It is a good show that I am enjoying because I loved the Avengers and am a great fan of Agent Coulson. I think I like Agent Coulson because his an easy going guy who lets nothing bother him. The show has some nice equipment which includes a nice cargo jet and a corvette. The other characters on the show include two scientist geeks Fitz and Simmons who spew techno babble at 1000 words a minute; Agent Ward, a combat and espionage expert; Agent May, who is the pilot of the cargo plane and doesn’t really want to be on the team; and Skye, who is a computer hacker they pick up along the way. So far there has been two cameos on the show from the movie which has made it nice for tie-in purposes.
As a show, so far, it has been slow going but I have liked the stories. There have been some superhero stuff but I think they are going to keep that in the background. They will be focusing on the human abilities of characters to solve problems than trying to do by super human feat. The show might not be to the liking of those who read the comic books but I think, if given a chance, it will be a good addition to the Marvel Universe. The only problem I have with the show is the Fitz/Simmons characters. They speak in a Scottish accent at way to fast of pace. Sometimes even closed captioning can’t keep up.
