HOW DID YOU GO ABOUT IDENTIFYING THIS PROBLEM?

• Consultant for 15 yrs in a textile company which employed mostly women.

After the closure of all these factories , women were left without job and without an income.

Due to their advanced age and illiteracy, they could not find other job.

HOW DID YOU GO ABOUT IDENTIFYING THIS PROBLEM?• Moreover, with the closure of

sugar industries, men also lost their job.

• Life became very hard for them , situation at home were worsening

• Women were victims of violence and some forced to prostitution

• Following the above problem children were not attending schools.

IS THIS ISSUE IMPORTANT?

• Revive the use of medicinal plants and motivate people to use traditional medicines for relief of certain illnesses

• Individual becoming more health conscious and seem to be increasingly aware of the beneficial effects of medicinal plants.

• Interest of other parents - the setting up of medicinal corners in their own gardens

HOW ARE YOU GOING ABOUT ADDRESSING THI S PROBLEM?

• Useful information were gathered from the elderly in the village on medicinal plant .

• Women were trained in the understanding, cultivating and caring of the medicinal plants in a small nursery that was set up on the roof of the APEDED center .

• Medicinal plants are potted and sold in .

• They also sell seedlings and baby plants as well.

• They were provided training in picking and dehydration techniques as well as packaging and marketing.

HOW ARE YOU GOING ABOUT ADDRESSING THI S PROBLEM?

• “Secret Grand-Mère”, (Grandma’ Secret) - 16 herbal teas / tisanes prepared from medicinal plants.

• Apart from medicinal plants and herbal teas, through this project these women have been empowered in several ways of socialisation such as marketing and addressing the media.

WHAT IS THE TIME-FRAME FOR THE PROJECT?

• Funding was received for only 12 month , starting Feb 2006 – Jan 2007

• It has become an income generating and as long as the women are motivated the project will continue

• 60 needy children at pre primary level having access to education every year.

• 30 slow learners are receiving remedial lessons .

WHAT RESULTS HAVE BEEN ACHIEVED?

SOCIO ECONOMIC RESULTS (CONTD):

• 20 women in the region of Chemin Grenier with a skill to generate an income regularly.

BUY BACK LEAVES

• 16 men and 12 women from different regions of Mauritius are having an income indirectly through this project from our “Buy back leaves”system.

WHAT RESULTS HAVE BEEN ACHIEVED?

ENVIRONMENTAL RESULTS:

• 34 Species of endemic medicinal plants are being protected and propagated.

• Through our sensitisation campaign on “Cultivation and Propagation of medicinal plants”, 1,256 families from different regions have now a medicinal plant corner in either their garden or in their terrace. They are cultivating a minimum of 10 varieties of medicinal plants. Around 30 hectares of land are under sustainable farming.

PRODUCTIVITY:

• Production of 4000 packets of herbal tea / month

• Turnover of $6,700 (fiscal) per mth.

• Dividend of $250 / mth x 20 ladies.

International buyers

• A Women organisation in China namely the Wang Liru from Guang Hui Culture Communication Company,the African Cultural Museum in Yiwu International Trade Mart is actually exporting tisanes from us.

• Reunion island - a lady namely Mrs Miguy Bavol Seraphin is our representative and sole distributor of tisanes all around Reunion island
