FREEMASONRY IS A FAMILY AFFAIR

W Bro John Montgomery of Unitas Masonic Lodge 485, Miss Amy Horner and her mother,

Ms Linda Lavery, in front of Amy’s exhibition piece Catching Eyes. On Halloween Night 1996, our Lodge lost a popular member, Bro Sam Horner, in a tragic car accident. Sam had just turned 48 and left behind a 4½ year old Daughter called Amy. Sam was our friend but he was also a private man and, initially, the Lodge was not aware of his daughter. However we later heard about Amy and from her mother, Linda, who fondly remembers leaving Amy to school on her first day accompanied by Sam. Linda was aware that Sam was a member of the Order but it wasn’t until speaking to some relatives in England, who were also members of our Fraternity, that she was advised that the Masonic Order might be of some assistance in helping with all the bills for a growing girl. Once informed, Unitas put the wheels in motion and with a certain amount of pride, took receipt of their first ever annuitant. As the years passed Linda has always kept the lodge informed of Amy’s progress through her school career which included developing a passion for photography. In her own words she described how photography has definitely become part of my life and feel it forever will. Continued work in her passion culminated with a BA (Hons) in Creative Imaging - a degree course based at Southern Regional College’s Lurgan Campus and awarded by John Moore University Liverpool. She passed with flying colours! As part of her Graduation, Amy, along with other students in her class, had to exhibit their work publicly. Amy and Linda wasted no time in sending an invitation to our lodge. On 30 May I had the honour, on behalf of all the members of our Lodge, to attend the 16 degrees BA (Hons) Creative Imaging End-of-Year Exhibition in the Market Place Theatre and Arts Centre. Amy and Linda both know that Sam’s friends and brothers in Freemasonry will be ever willing to provide support whenever required. In memory of our friend and Brother, Sam. FIAT LUX ET FACTA EST LUX.

Annual Cary & Dunluce Charity Breakfast The Cary and Dunluce Masonic Charity Committee came this year to the Causeway Hotel at

the Giant’s Causeway, Bushmills, to host their annual Charity Breakfast on Saturday 08 November. This was well attended, with Brethren and their families present from all across the

Province of Antrim. The morning started around 7.00am for the members of Committee and their helpers, as they set up for the official 7.30am start.

An excellent breakfast was served, and the staff were kept busy right through to the 10am close. Raffle tickets were sold throughout the morning and the draw for the raffle was held around 9.45am, when the chairman of the organising committee, W Bro Gordon Chestnutt, acted as compere. The two nominated Charities this year were the NI Branch of The British Heart Foundation and the North Coast Branch of Autism NI. Preliminary indications are that a sum, in the region of £ 2,800.00 was realised on the day. There are usually other donations received by the Committee, from people unable to attend, and these will be added to the aforementioned figure, before the final, official total is announced. One interesting Ballot prize on the day, was a voucher for a new tie - won by RW Bro Jack O Dunlop.

Death of W Bro Peter Leach, Tower of Lebanon Masonic Lodge No 169

It was with both regret and shock that news of the sudden death of W Bro Peter Leach in late July was received by friends and colleagues. W Bro Leach was the key member of the

team overseeing the Provincial Website and his untimely demise led to a temporary interruption in the continuity of information. A full tribute to W Bro Leach will appear in the September Newsletter and in the meantime we remember his family and a wide circle of

friends, many of whom knew him as a Brother Freemason.

DOAGH MASONS SUPPORT LOCAL PRIMARY SCHOOL

Union Masonic Lodge from Doagh presented a cheque for £250 to Doagh Primary School as a

contribution towards the School’s annual Sports Day awards. Some three years ago, Union Lodge 317 decided to help three local schools - Tildarg, Kilbride and Doagh - on a tri-annual basis by raising funds to support the purchase of prizes for their sporting achievements. To date, and since 2011, the Lodge has contributed a total of £1000 to the three local primary

schools and hopes to be able to sustain this in the years ahead.

Pictured above are members of the Lodge with School Principal, Dr Helen McLernon, and some of the pupils at the presentation ceremony on 02 June.
