ANTIQUEContinued from Page 1Bback that ‘warm fuzzy’ memory of some-thing  their  mom  or  grandma  had,”  said Stacey Mielcarek at Yesterday’s Treasures in downtown Fenton. “I think that is why most people start collecting.”   Up-cycling and repurposing are all  the rage these days, from television shows to Pinterest boards, many are looking to an-tique stores for home décor. “It has brought quite  a  boost  for  business,”  according  to Mielcarek. She said, “People are realizing that it is actually cheaper to buy an old piece, made of real wood that has stood the test of time, than something new and made of particle board.”  Michelle Sikora of Vintage Row, a new antique  shop  in  Fenton  on  North  LeRoy Street said, “There’s a thrill of the hunt for that perfect, restorable piece or something fun to be created.”   It’s not just an adventure for the shoppers either. Mielcarek said, “One of the best parts of my job is that I am constantly learning.” When something comes in that she doesn’t know about, she does the research and learns new things.  “ I learn a lot from my customers too, the ones who collect  something  in particular will  always  educate  me  and  tell  me  the little ‘ins and outs’ of that particular thing,” she said.   Mielcarek shared a story about one of the  items  in  her  store,  a  large  coin  from 1865. The United States Sanitary Commis-sion was a private relief agency created in 1861, to support sick and wounded soldiers of the U.S. Army during the American Civil War, and it continued afterwards. She said, “Women would get together and go around to raise funds for the sanitary commission. The larger donors would get one of these coins as a commemorative gift.”  “Antiquing is a timeless hobby that has never gone out of style. There’s something to  be  said  about  the  experience  one  has when they see something that is familiar to them, it’s a quick trip down memory lane,” said Sikora.

  Sikora  enjoys  the  stories  that  different items pull out of people. “ It’s so neat to see people come in the shop and say ‘I had one of those when I was little’ or ‘we had one of these growing up and we used to…’ and they tell the story about that piece.”  She sees antiques as a glimpse into the past, an example of what life was once like. Anyone  who  has  ever  owned  a  piece  of antique furniture knows that it has a qual-ity and craftsmanship that speaks for itself, made by hand out of natural hard wood and built to last for many generations.

Lee and the former Pat Bloch of Allen Park, Michigan, were married at the St. Francis Cabrini Church in Allen Park, Michigan on Nov. 7, 1964. They have three sons: Gregory of Allen Park, Kenneth of Fenton and Gary of Garden City, Michigan. They also have five grand-children: Ashley, Christine, Brooke, Autumn and Sarah. Most Lions’ fans thought, based on the team’s record and the injury situations for many other teams, the Lions were a lock to make the play-offs and win the North Division. Instead, they lost six of their last seven games and didn’t make the playoffs.

Started: 6-2Finished: 10-6, lost Wild Card play-off game to New Orleans Saints 45-28 Summary: Led by quarterback Matthew Stafford, the Lions’ offense looked unbeatable at times. Detroit was 10-4 entering its last two games, and looking like a playoff contender. Instead, Detroit’s defense couldn’t stop anyone. The Lions lost their last three games, including the loss to the Saints in the playoffs.

Started: 5-2Finished: 9-7, out of the playoffsSummary: The Lions could’ve made the playoffs with a victory against the Bears during the last game of the season, but lose after the Bears’ Paul Edinger nails a 54-yard field goal. And, of course, the loss helped spur on the Matt Millen era, eventually resulting in the Lions’ 0-16 season in 2008. Bleak times were ahead for Lions’ fans.

By David Troppens  The Detroit Lions are halfway through the regular season and enjoy a 6-2 record, placing second in the National Foot-ball Conference if the season ended today. One would think a 6-2 start during a 16-game season would probably be a good indicator of success for a squad. That’s probably true, unless you are the Detroit Lions. Since 1991, the Lions have started the season with records like 5-2, 6-2 and 6-3 six other times. During those seasons, the Lions failed to make the playoffs twice, and only won a playoff game once. I wanted to take a look back at some of those past seasons.

Started: 7-2Finished: 10-6, lost Wild Card game to Green Bay Packers 28-24Summary: In back-to-back games, the Lions played the Packers. The Lions won the NFL Central the last week of the sea-son to earn a home game in the Wild Card round of the playoffs the next week. Unfortunately, the Lions lost the next week when Brett Farve found Sterling Sharpe wide open in the endzone for the game-winning TD. I was at both of the games.

u16 million Americans fought in World War II, and slightly more than a million are still livingBy Sally Rummelnews@tctimes.com; 810-629-8282  Elmer  Schupbach,  89,  is  one  of 1,034,727  World  War  II  American veterans still  living  to share  their war stories and life history.  A  member  of  the  Curtis-Wolverton VFW Post #3253 in Fenton, Schupbach went into the Army at 18 and was dis-charged before he turned 21. He served in the Battery C 555th Company attached 

to  the  104th  Infantry,  according  to  a Times story written by Jan Rynearson on Nov. 23, 2006. They were called the Timberwolves.  Schupbach  fought  in the  Battle  of  the  Bulge near the Ardennes Forest on  the  German-Belgium border,  which  according to history, was  the worst battle  during  World  War II  in  terms  of  losses  to Americans.   “We were one of the first troops into Germany,” said Schupbach. “I was on 

uLocal observances planned in tri-county areaBy Sally Rummelnews@tctimes.com; 810-629-8282  This  Tuesday,  Nov.  11  will  mark  the 96th observance of Veterans Day, which marks  the  official  end  of  World  War  I. An armistice, or  temporary cessation of hostilities between the Allied nations  and  Germany,  went into effect on  the 11th hour of  the  11th  day  of  the  11th month.  Many  local  observances will  honor  Veterans  Day 2014:•  The  Fenton  Rotary  Club will host its annual Veterans Day  Breakfast  on  Tuesday, Nov.  11  at  7:15  a.m.  at  Spring  Mead-ows  Country  Club.  Guest  speaker  will be author Teresa Irish, who will present “The Journey of the Letters,” sharing her father’s 1,000 letters written from World War II, to his parents and his sweetheart, who would become his wife.  The public is invited at a cost of $10 per

  What he didn’t know then was that one of the young  men  he  served with would later become a father to a little girl who grew up to become First Lady  Laura  Bush.  Her father,  George  Welch, was  a  master  gunner  in the headquarters battery.  Laura Bush planned a 

Veterans Day Breakfast at The White House  on  Nov.  11,  2006  in  honor  of her  dad  and  fellow  Timberwolves, including  Schupbach.  In  October,  he received a phone call from The White House  regarding  the  event,  followed by engraved invitations for him and his children. Several of his grandchildren also joined them on the trip.   In addition to the honor of meeting and  dining  with  President  and  Mrs. Bush, Schupbach was able to meet with the 40  living vets from  the 555th Unit Battalion and their families.

• The Great Lakes National Cemetery will hold its 10th annual Veterans Day program at 11 a.m. Guest speaker will be Patrick Lafferty,  state adjutant of  the American Legion,  Department  of  Michigan.  The ceremony  will  include  patriotic  music, presentation  of  colors,  a  cannon  salute, rifle salute and taps.

uVietnam veterans recall their lack of support from government and countryBy Sally Rummelnews@tctimes.com; 810-629-8282  Gerald  “Hawk”  Hawkins,  68,  re-members  coming  home  from  Vietnam after serving  in  the U.S. Marine Corps in the north part of South Vietnam from 1966-67.  “The  guys  who  came  back,  from Vietnam especially, were not welcomed home,” said Hawkins. “Not by our coun-try, not by our government. Simply put, we gave the right of freedom to all U.S. citizens, while sacrificing our own.”  All  that has changed  in  today’s non-wartime  climate.  “People  stop  me  and come up to me at the grocery store and thank me for my  time of service,” said Hawkins, who always wears his “colors” on his cap, so they can see he is a Vietnam veteran from the U.S. Marine Corp.  “It means a lot to me. There’s not much else I can say in return other than, ‘thank you for giving me this honor.’”

Wanda Mae (Ostrander) Longworth 1947-2014 Wanda Mae (Ostrander) Longworth - age 66, of 

Fenton, died Sunday, Novem-ber 2, 2014. Services were held 2 PM 

Friday, November 7, 2014 at Sharp Funeral Homes, Fenton Chapel, 1000 Silver Lake Road, Fenton. Pastor Josh Gates officiated. Visitation was held at the funeral home Friday from 1 PM until the time of service. Wanda was born November 17, 1947 in Flint the daughter of John and Helen (Schram) Manweiler. She was a graduate of Flint Central High School. She married Thomas Jack Longworth February 21, 1964 in Flint. Wanda worked as an LPN for McLaren and Flint Osteo-pathic Hospital’s. She had resided in Fenton since 1996 coming from Flint. Surviving are: her husband of 50 years, Thomas; 2 children, Donald Long-worth of Germantown, WI and Charlene Longworth of Fenton; brother, Peter and wife Deanna Ostrand-er of Mt. Morris; sister, Irene Looney of Andalusia, Alabama; brother-in-law, James Longworth of Linden; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and sister-in-law, Laura Johnson. Online tributes may be posted on the obituaries page at www.sharpfuneralhomes.com.

Funeral Homes, Fenton Chapel, 1000 Silver Lake Road, Fenton. Rev. Dr. W. Ten Roberts officiating. Committal services will be at 2:30 PM Saturday at Flint Memorial Park. Visitation was held 4:30-8 PM Friday, and will be held 9 AM until the time of service on Saturday. In lieu of flow-ers those desiring may make contributions to Lake Fenton Community Schools Foundation or Residential Hospice. Irene was born August 5, 1923 in Pontiac, the daughter of Grover and Frances (Langley) Creger. She grew up in Birch Run. She married Robert C. Markby on May 1, 1943, they were married for 50 years. He preceded her in death in October 1993. They had lived on Lake Fenton since 1945. She worked at AC Spark Plug, then Lake Fenton Schools for 25 years, retiring in June of 1981. She was a member of Forget-Me-Nots of the Fenton State Bank, CCC, UAW # 598, Order of the Eastern Star of Grand Blanc. She traveled with the State Bank Forget-Me-Nots and the Grand Blanc Senior Center. She enjoyed playing cards, bingo, doing puzzles and visiting with her family. Irene is survived by her children, Ronald R. (Laura) Markby of AZ, Sharon K. (Stan) Patocki of Rochester Hills, Patricia (Earle) Schultz of Fenton; grandchildren, Jamie Markby Herman, Ste-ven (Kelly) Ragan, Charles Ragan, Nathan (Anne) Schultz, Earle “E.J” (Sta-cey) Schultz; step-grand-children, Kendra Patocki, Stacey (Ryan) Liskiewicz; great-grandchildren, Lucas, Easton, Zeke, Lilah Irene, Ella, Matthew; step-great-grandchildren, Mitchell, Emily, Sydney; sister, Marie Creger of Frankenmuth; many nieces and neph-ews. She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Iva VanEvery, Rose Mary Goodlander; brothers, Wally, Grover, Carl and L.G. Creger; sister-in-law Naomi Snyder of Ontario. The family extends a special thank you to the caregivers of Caretel Inns of Linden and Residential Hospice.Tributes may be shared on the obituaries page of www.sharpfuneralhomes.com.

Rosemary (Bigelow) Burt1949-2014 Rosemary (Bigelow) Burt - born December 12, 1949, passed away November 4, 2014. Rose was a gradu-ate of Fenton High School and Mott Community College. She served on the Fenton Cemetery board and was a member of the Fenton Church of God. Rose will be remembered as a person who always put the needs of others before her own. She will be sadly missed by sons, Danney Burt and Keith Vore; grandsons, Bradley and Mason; and grand-daughter, Chelsey. She also leaves behind brother, Ronald (Joyce) Bigelow; sister, Brenda (Russ) Arrand; uncle, Donald Bigelow; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. She was preceded in death by daughter, Sara; granddaughter, Skyler; and parents, James and June Bigelow. A special thank you to her caregivers from Hospice Home Advantage and Temrowski Family Funeral Home.

‘White-Coat Syndrome’ or High Blood Pressure?DR. ROACH: My 21-year-old son is a college athlete, a sprinter, but he has had recurrent high systolic blood pressure readings since he was a senior in high school. He’s generally easygoing and not stressed. Doctors always attribute the elevated results to ‘white-coat syndrome,’ since he is otherwise in excellent health and doesn’t drink, smoke or use drugs. The last reading was 142/78. Once, a nurse had him rest quietly for a few minutes and rechecked the reading; it was lower, but still high. He just finished four months of rigorous basic training with the Army with no problems (his high reading on his physical was put down to nervousness), and he may now be anxious no matter where or when the reading is taken, but I’m worried that something else may be going on. Is there something we should have checked? — K.C.

ANSWER: The real question is whether your son has

‘white coat’ hypertension, or just hypertension. The best way of answering this is with a 24-hour blood-pressure monitor, which checks the blood pressure every 15-30 minutes while awake, and less frequently at night. If those readings are mostly in the normal range, we could conclude that he has reactive, or white-coat, hypertension. However, it is possible that he has hypertension. Healthy young people

sometimes get hypertension, and he may be able to get his blood pressure down without medication, through salt reduction and relaxation techniques. But if he needs them, there are medications that will not affect his athletic abilities. I sometimes order an echocardiogram to look for changes in the heart that go along with high blood pressure. However, the elevated blood pressure readings are only of a few years’ duration, so he might not have these yet. I think the 24-hour BP monitor is the way to go. High blood pressure is one of the most common ailments for the general population.

Slow Cooker Chicken Tortellini SoupINGREDIENTS:• 1 lb. boneless, skinless chicken 

tenderloins• 20 oz. fresh three cheese tortellini• 2 to 3 C. fresh baby spinach• 3½ C. low sodium chicken broth• 2 cans (15 oz.) diced tomatos, undrained• 8 oz. cream cheese• 1 T. dried Italian seasoning• salt and pepper, to taste• 1 t. red pepper flakes (optional)

DIRECTIONS1. Add the chicken broth, cream cheese, 

tomatoes, Italian seasoning, red pepper flakes, and chicken tenderloins to a large slow cooker. Cook on high for 3-4 hours, stirring occasionally.

2. About 20 minutes before serving, add the tortellini and continue to cook on high. Remove the chicken and tear into large pieces. Return the chicken to the slow cooker. Salt and pepper to taste.

3. Just before serving, add the spinach and stir. Once the spinach has wilted, serve immediately.
