- 1910 millions of Americans joined national meat boycott to protest high prices
- Start to encourage the USDA to fund research aimed at keeping meat price on pace with demand
- High intensity and mass production → disease control
- 1950 group of US scientists found that adding antibiotics to animal feed increases growth rate of livestock

non therapeutic purpose in agricultural production
