the island in 1493 and named it Antigua
after a church
o Settled by pre-agricultural Amerindians
o Antigua was always a farming island, the natives farmed corn, sweet potatoes, chiles, guava, tobacco and cotton
ECONOMICSo More than half of Antigua's
income comes from tourism
o The currency is The East Caribbean Dollar
o Antigua is in a public debt of 359.8 million

(became independent in 1981)
o Antigua sailing week. Sailors from all over the world come to Antigua for this festival
o Black History Month. BHM is big in Antigua. Most of the population is African American
