Anterograde Amnesia and Finding Dory
Psychology Basis
Anterograde Amnesia• Anterograde Amnesia is a loss of the ability to create new memories
after the event that caused the amnesia, leading to a partial or complete inability to recall the recent past, while long-term memories from before the event remain intact.• Research shows that anterograde amnesia 3. • People who suffer from anterograde amnesia usually only
lose declarative memory, which is the the recollection of facts, but they retain non-declarative or procedural memory, which is the learning of skills and habits.
Anterograde Amnesia• The person is able to remember how to do
certain things like writing or talking on the phone but the person may not be able to remember what they ate for breakfast. • This was made clear in the early 20th Century
by Édouard Claparède, who showed that, although anterograde anmnesiacs were unable to remember meeting him on previous days they were still able to learn and remember some some things
Media
Finding Dory (2016)• The movies is an animated comedy drama, adventure film• Dory is a blue tang fish that is on a journey to find her long lost
parents• Dory got separated from her parents as a child• Dory meets people along the way that help her learn to remember
her parents and the memories
Finding Dory (2016)• Dory attempts to
search for her parents but she is gradually forgetting them• Overall everyone
learns a few things about the real meaning of family along the way.
Connection
Connection• Dory was a spin off of
the movie “Nemo”• In “Nemo” Dory was
known to have short term memory loss. But it becomes more apparent that she has anterograde amnesia• Anterograde amnesia
can be countless times throughout the movie
Connection• One specific scene in the movie is when one of the characters gives
dory directions to get to somewhere through a maze of pipes but dory completely forgets all of the directions she was told and gets lost. • Now although dory forgets conversations and directions, she still is
able to remember who she is and how to talk to people. • Dory struggles most with being able to form and encode new
memories
ConnectionBeing that research shows that anterograde amnesia results from a failure of memory encoding and storage which is one of the biggest things that Dory struggles with throughout the entire movie,
My Take• I believe the movie gives
an insightful way of showing the affect of both short term memory loss and anterograde amnesia.• Also because the movie is
aimed at a younger age group, it can be seen as a very informative movie, that can pose a lot of questions.
