Texas
TexasPresident John Quincy Adams,
who had been elected in 1824, triedto buy Texas from Mexico, but hewas refused. After his election in
1828, President Jackson also tried tobuy Texas. Again, Mexico refused.
TexasBy 1834 Americans outnumbered Mexicans in Texas 4-1. over 20,000 Americans had moved there.
TexasGeneral Antonio López de Santa Anna,
who had been elected Mexico’s president in 1833, was increasingly disturbed by the large numbers of
white settlers.Under a new constitution, he took away
any special privileges in Texas and forbade additional settlers from coming
into the area.
TexasThe “Texians” made the decision to
declare MexicoSanta Anna led about 2,000 troopsagainst the rebellious Texians. He
quickly took control of San Antonio butwas not able to capture the Alamo, an
old Spanish Mission that had been converted to a fort.
TexasAfter a siege of twelve days, Santa Anna’s troops stormed
the fort. All ofthe Texas settlers were killed. A
few weeks later, Santa Anna ordered the execution of 350
Texians that were being held at Goliad These were soldiers that
had surrendered.
TexasThe massacres at the Alamo and Goliad became a rallying point for the Texians. This motivation gave them what they needed to defeat the Mexican army 2
months later at the Battle of San Jacinto. The Texians formed a new country called
the Republic of Texas. It became part of the United States in
1845.
