THOR hammers drones with microwaves Locally built AF weapon unveiled

ROBERTO E. ROSALES/JOURNAL

The Air Force Research Laboratory knocked out a drone with the THOR microwave

weapon in a demonstration for reporters Thursday. BY KEVIN ROBINSON-AVILA JOURNAL STAFF WRITER

6-23-2019 Albuquerque Journal

U.S. military bases across the globe may soon have a New Mexico-made, high-powered

microwave weapon at their disposal to instantaneously down swarms of enemy drones.

The Air Force Research Laboratory at Kirtland Air Force Base unveiled the weapon Thursday

morning in a live demonstration with local reporters, who watched the system effortlessly

knock a hovering drone out of the sky with an invisible and inaudible electromagnetic wave.

The $15 million system, called the Tactical High Power Microwave Operational Responder,

or THOR, disabled the unmanned aerial vehicle in a flash, sending it spiraling to the ground the

moment the electromagnetic ray hit it. Had more drones been flying within THOR’s expansive

scope, they also would have dropped in an instant, THOR program manager Amber Anderson

said.

Sandia Labs hiring 1,900 new employees BY KEVIN ROBINSON-AVILA / JOURNAL STAFF WRITER Published: Wednesday, May 22nd, 2019

Sandia National Laboratories expects to hire 1,900 new employees this year, 1,100 of them to fill newly-created positions at the lab.

That’s an unprecedented number of new hires, Sandia Associate Labs Director for Mission Services Scott Aeilts told the Albuquerque Economic Forum Wednesday morning. It’s also employing a record 500 student interns this summer, 60 percent of them from New Mexico schools.

“Of the 1,900 new hires, 1,100 are for brand new positions, and the rest are

to fill jobs opened up through normal attrition,” Aeilts said. “We’re struggling to get those employees. It’s a very competitive economy right now.” Although Sandia is hiring for all lab missions, the surge in new jobs largely reflects national efforts to modernize and extend the life of the country’s nuclear weapons. Much of that work is based at Sandia.

“The nuclear weapons programs are at an all-time high,” Aeilts said. “That’s the No. 1 reason for the new positions. There’s huge demand there.”

And Sandia is working hard to recruit New Mexicans as it ramps up the workforce.

Of the lab’s total 13,000 employees, including about 2,000 in California, 38 percent are people who graduated from New Mexico schools, Aeilts said. That represents an 86 percent increase in locally-educated lab employees over the past five years.

The summer internship program particularly reflects aggressive local outreach. The lab is working closely with New Mexico universities to make sure students in science, technology, engineering and math careers are trained with appropriate skills to compete for jobs at Sandia.

That includes memorandums of understanding with engineering and other schools at the state’s three research universities. About 300 of this summer’s 500 interns come from New Mexico universities, including about 100 UNM students hired into business-focused positions.

Sandia signed an agreement about two years ago with the University of New Mexico’s Anderson School of Management for the lab to assist in curriculum development to better align graduates with lab needs.

It allows us to work with the dean’s office on program and project-management curriculum to train students so they can hit the ground running at Sandia,” Aeilts said.

New Mexico tops list for retirees

New Mexico was a top destination for retirees in 2018. April 23, 2019 By Ron Davis – Reporter, Albuquerque Business First

Florida was not the most popular choice for retirees who relocated in 2018. New Mexico was found to be the top retiree moving destination last year, according to United Van Lines' National Movers Study. The

study found 43 percent of moves to the Land of Enchantment were retirement-related. Florida followed at 39 percent and neighboring state Arizona had 37 percent of all moves related to retirement, rounding out the top three. The study cited New Mexico's culture, outdoor activities and relatively low cost of living, which United Van Lines cited at about 3 percent below the national average, as reasons for why retirees flocked to the state in 2018.

While the state is also working to appeal to young professionals and entrepreneurs of all ages, retirees can have a substantial impact on a state's economy, and some leaders have pushed for a concerted effort by the state to bring retirees to New Mexico.

poke at a NAIOP luncheon last year about how the state should tout its appealing conditions, including New Mexico's climate, to retirees.

"Why on God's green earth should we bring retirees to New Mexico?" Bob Grassberger, economist and professor at the University of New Mexico said at a NAIOP luncheon last year, "Because that's where the money is”. Baby boomers control 70 percent of the disposable income. If we add Gen Xers in with the baby boomers, we're talking $53 trillion that they control."

Grassberger said many retirees have stable "mailbox income," with regular pension or social security checks coming in. He cited a retiree-attraction program Alabama started around 30 years ago that brought in billions to the state. Grassberger's research found one retiree household would generate half a job.

Albuquerque ranked No. 89 on U.S. News & World Report's 2019 list of the Best Places to Retire based on its housing affordability, desirability, retiree taxes, the happiness index, job market and health care quality. Albuquerque was also a top city for where retirement money could last. SmartAsset found that $1 million would last 30.96 years in the Duke City.

The Best Places to Live and Work as a

Moviemaker 2019: Big Cities By Ryan Stewart on January 16, 2019

1. Albuquerque, New Mexico 2019

Albuquerque has gone from an attractive boutique city on the production map to a marquee player, attracting over 50 major productions in the last three years. It’s also recently played host to the highly-anticipated Nicole Kidman drama The Goldfinch (which was expected to hire 173 New Mexico crewmembers), as well as the next project from Drive auteur Nicolas Winding Refn, the Amazon series Too Old to Die Young, similarly expected to employ 100 local crewmembers.

Nothing, though, could be bigger than the October news that industry-changer Netflix has chosen ABQ as the spot for a production facility (after reportedly being enticed by over $14 million in development funding) that could drop a billion into the local economy over a decade. Netflix original Godless and pick-up Longmire already call New Mexico home, and the Netflix news was big enough to overshadow a mixed bag of data released a month earlier. The numbers showed a modest, cyclical slowdown in spending (a fall from $506 million in fiscal year 2017 to $234 million in 2018’s budget year), which New Mexico film officials attributed to growing pains and claimed was offset by a healthy number of indie productions, including 38 in the million-dollar range.

The Sabrina Carpenter-starring road movie The Short History of the Long Road, began production in April. Director Ani Simon-Kennedy (Days of Gray) offered praise for the state’s unique natural architecture and the work ethic of ABQ crews. “The crew we had was unparalleled,” Simon-Kennedy says. “The level of heart they poured into our low-budget feature went above and beyond. Everyone was resourceful and reliable; New Mexico was the perfect setting for our road trip movie since you can get such varied landscapes. We shot in the spring when the weather was cooperative, but it can get unpredictable—from gorgeous blue skies to crazy thunderstorms and back in an hour.” The Short History’s DP Cailin Yatsko concurs, stating that “as soon as you leave, you find yourself missing that beautiful New Mexico sky.” She also acknowledges the tremendous influx of talent, money, and industry pouring into ABQ: “Our biggest challenge was really the fact that ABQ crews are so busy—we were lucky our schedule worked out so that we got such an incredible team.”

For those who continue to primarily associate ABQ with its breakout Breaking Bad franchise, good news: The Emmy-nominated Better Call Saul, set in the flip-phone era, was renewed over the summer for a fifth season, while ABQ merchants continue to meet demand for all things Walt, Jesse, and Saul. Local fixture Rebel Donut still offers the Blue Sky donut with a (perfectly legal) sprinkling of blue rock candy, while RV tours of prominent locations of Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul continue to ferry superfans to over two dozen ABQ locations that are now part of TV history.

NETFLIX ANNOUNCES PLANS TO OPEN NEW U.S. PRODUCTION HUB IN ALBUQUERQUE

Global entertainment service will invest $1 billion to boost New Mexico’s economy

- from Netflix Press Conference Announcement TV & Movies

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – October 8, 2018 -- Today, Governor Susana Martinez, Mayor Tim Keller, and Ty Warren, Vice President, Physical Production for Netflix announced that Netflix has chosen Albuquerque, NM as the site of a new U.S. production hub and is in final negotiations to purchase ABQ Studios, located in Albuquerque’s Mesa Del Sol. Upon closing, the company plans to bring $1 billion dollars in production to New Mexico over the next ten years and create up to 1000 production jobs a year.

This is the company’s first purchase of a production studio complex. Netflix will produce film and television series in the new facility and at locations around the state, including irreverent apocalypse dramedy Daybreak, supernatural drama Chambers and epic, suspenseful drama Messiah. Chambers and Messiah are currently being produced in the Albuquerque area; both productions have provided jobs for over 700 New Mexican crew members. Previous Netflix productions in New Mexico include the Emmy Award-winning limited series Godless, The Ridiculous Six and Longmire.

The effort to bring Netflix to Albuquerque will be made possible through Local Economic Development Act (LEDA) funding. The State of New Mexico will provide up to $10 million in LEDA funding and the City of Albuquerque will commit up to $4.5 million in local LEDA funding to the project. The City of Albuquerque will be the fiscal agent for the LEDA awards.

“Netflix is at the cutting edge of the film and television industry and it’s an honor to welcome them to New Mexico,” said Governor Martinez. “After years of hard work to cut taxes and make New Mexico business-friendly, we’re seeing incredible results. Now, New Mexico is leading the nation in economic growth and lowering unemployment and we’ve brought the world’s leading internet entertainment service, Netflix, to our state.”

“Landing Netflix is a transformative victory that will change the business landscape in the Duke City,” said Mayor Tim Keller. “The city has leveraged the groundwork laid over the years by our partners in the film and TV industry and we’ve made sure that film and the creative economy remained a tenet of our economic development plan so we can create accessible, high-paying jobs in this industry. Now viewers all over the world will be able to

TECHNOLOGY April 5, 2018 Raytheon touts test results of unique technology developed in ABQ

Raytheon says its directed energy system emits an adjustable energy beam that, when aimed at airborne targets such as drones, renders them unable to fly. Raytheon and AFRL’s high-power microwave system was successfully tested in Fort Still, Oklahoma, taking out 33 drones, Raytheon said last month.

MONICA K. GUTHRIE, PAO, U.S. ARMY

By Rachel Sams – Albuquerque Business First About five years ago, employees at Raytheon in Albuquerque had an idea. The defense contracting giant had purchased assets of Albuquerque-based Ktech, a leader in high-powered microwave technology, in 2011. Some Raytheon scientists believed that technology could be applied to destroy a small unmanned aerial system. That was before drones began appearing frequently in personal, military and commercial applications, says Susan Kelly, site director for Raytheon Albuquerque. “Nobody back then in the military saw a need" for that application of microwave tech, Kelly said. As you might imagine, that has changed, according to Raytheon. Massachusetts-based Raytheon used its funds to develop and test the technology with Albuquerque’s Air Force Research Laboratory, Kelly said. The company won’t say how much money it spent. Raytheon and AFRL worked together under a $2 million contract to test and demonstrate high-power microwave, counter-UAV capabilities. Raytheon and AFRL’s high-power microwave system was successfully tested in Fort Still, Oklahoma, taking out 33 drones, Raytheon said last month. “Eight of these kills were all at the same time," Kelly said. "We took them all down in a matter of a few seconds.” The technology is especially appealing because it doesn’t damage birds, plants or animals, she said. And the cost per drone taken out is “near zero,” she said. The timing is fortuitous. Soldiers all over the world are encountering swarms of small drones, Kelly said: “Now people are really interested in our capability that we developed five years ago.” The next step is to “ruggedize” the demonstration system Raytheon built, making the technology easier for the military to use by integrating it with sensors and radar. She hopes the military will be using the technology on the battlefield by next year. She sees it as a tool the military could use alongside lasers, missiles and guns. The whole Department of Defense is potentially a customer, she said. She thinks Raytheon will likely approach the Air Force first as a customer, because of the agency’s interest in technological solutions. Between Raytheon, Sandia National Laboratories and Kirtland Air Force Base, “this is a center of high-powered microwave technology,” Kelly said of the Duke City. The company said in November that it had won a massive U.S. Navy contract, which its Albuquerque site owns and will take the lead on. The $79 million contract will involve work on a new advanced telemetry system for the Navy's Range Support Aircraft.

forthcoming six-story building to be constructed Courtesy University of New Mexico Eight months after selecting a development team to create East Downtown's Innovate ABQ, the University of New Mexico Board of Regents have announced the first phase of the project — and it's a big one. On tap is a 159,000-square-foot mixed-use building that centers around Innovate ABQ's live-work-play concept. The Innovate ABQ site is to be a complex for entrepreneurs — billed as a future hub for research and innovation. A rendering shows Innovate ABQ's forthcoming six-story building to be constructed just north of the old First Baptist Church, which is on the northwest corner of Central Avenue and Broadway Boulevard. The development team — Signet Development, Goodman Realty Group and Dekker/Perich/Sabatini — are set to construct a six story building with offices, education and retail spaces on the ground floor, and 155 apartments above. The $35 million building will be constructed just north of the old First Baptist Church, which is on the northwest corner of Central Avenue and Broadway Boulevard. "We want this to create a catalyst to draw businesses and individuals, and also to create the 24-hour environment on the site," Perry said. "We're trying to create that vibrancy of a mixed-use project and we think this will be the catalyst that will attract businesses here.

New Mexicans invent device to detect suicide bombs worldwide Ryan Luby Updated: 04/14/2016 10:39 PM

The device is the size of a baking pan and sits atop a small tripod. It uses a small X-band radar -- the type of technology used in air traffic control and weather radars. But instead of tracking planes and storm systems, it can detect suicide vests and the things terrorists stuff inside them to kill people. He partnered with a team of people at Sandia National Laboratories through the New Mexico Small Business Assistance program in 2013. Together, they're putting the finishing touches on the CBD-1000 -- a bomb detector. "What they would do is they would put explosives behind it, put it on their body, and then these bolts and nuts would project as shrapnel," J.R. Russell, one of the Sandia scientists said while demonstrating how the CBD-1000 works. The device can detect both metallic and non-metallic shrapnel -- such as ceramic ball bearings. In use, the CBD-1000 scans someone in about a second and then transmits data to a custom piece of software, which determines if a threat is present or not. Russell said humans are essentially large bags of water. The CBD-1000 scans for any abnormalities in that mass -- such as a suicide bomb vest. He said it accounts for things like cell phones, wallets and laptops that people may have on them. KOB witnessed how the device works. One of Russell's team members sported a vest filled with ceramic ball bearings and underwent a scan. "It says additional screening required, meaning the system found something on him that didn't look like a normal person," Russell said. The team is in the process of fine-tuning the technology so it can scan a large, moving crowd at a distance of more than 100 feet using a dish that resembles a home satellite dish. Roberson said airports would likely be among the first customers. He said the device and technology associated with it would ultimately sell for anywhere between $50,000 and $100,000 -- markedly less than traditional body scanners found at airports.
