Wooten's report concludedwith the information that nineteen new membersjoined the Association (up nine from the lastreporting period), and that seventy-three peoplerenewed their memberships (down from ninety-three).

Following the business report, MANSAPresident David Conrad suggested that the"Treasurer Europe" be established as a regularofficer of the organization. The position wasoriginated and is presently occupied by JanJansen who handles European memberships andsubscriptions to Mamie Studies. A motion wasmade and carried unanimously.

· item of business. the PresidentmllOtmc:ed that after two terms of excellent

ice as Secretary-Treasurer, Stephen Wootennot be seeking reelection to the office.

Conrad's nomination of Rosa Delorio, wasunanimously supported, and DeIorio became thenew Secretary-Treasurer.

The President then announced that BarbaraFrank had officially tendered her resignation asMANSA Vice-President, owing to the imminentarrival of her new baby. The floor was openedfor nominations, and Patrick McNaughtonnominated Kassim Kone. The nomination wasunanimously supported, and Kone became thenew Vice-President.

Conrad noted that Kone's election to the '-Ppost left his spot on the Advisory Board open. .addition to which. the terms of three othermembers were expiring. Maria Grosz-: igsuggested that members e-mail Davi 0nominate people for the Board, theregeneral agreement.

Conrad introduced the idea of restru turingthe dues to include a subscription to the journalMande Studies. He suggested adding the S15subscription fee on to the existing rates.Discussion ensued on rates and on whethersponsored members would receive the journal aswell as whether student memberships shouldrequire journal subscription. It was decided thatdue to the perils of international mail to Africa, local institutions, libraries and archives wouldreceive complimentary copies of the journal byhand courier. It was also decided that studentmembers may elect to add the journal rather thanbeing required to do so. Thus, the following duesstructure was adopted: regular members = $25(including the journal), sponsoring members =$40 (including the journal) and studentmembership remains $5 (without the journal).Students wishing to add the journal may do so bysimply adding $15 for the subscription, for apayment of $20.00. The new rates andsubscription additions were effectiveimmediately.

Regarding the upcoming Fifth InternationalConference on Mande Studies, Conrad reportedthat there had been a very strong response to thecall for papers and panels for the Leidenmeeting. Dutch colleagues have arranged accessto more meeting space at the university, soConrad was still accepting panel and paper

proposals for the time be' g. He itmight be necessary to have some simultaneoussessions this time around however. Jan Jansenannounced that he needed people who wbe attending the conference to contact him ASAPto reserve rooms.

The President next asked for suggestions forMANSA-sponsored panels for ASA 2002 inWashington DC. Sarah Brett-Smith suggestedone on Minyanka-Bamana relations, HeatherMaxwell suggested Mande popular music,Akarie Aden suggested one on powerassociations gone public. Michelle Johnson andPatti • f, • ' ggested one on the

Regarding future plans, Conrad announcedthat colleagues in Guinea are very interested inhosting a Mande Studies conference there in thenext few years. He reported that theinfrastructure in Conakry has developed a greatdeal during the past ten years, and that Conakrymight well be a good site for the nextinternational conference after Leiden.

Allen Howard offered special thanks toStephen Wooten for his service as Secretary-Treasurer, and the group gave a round ofapplause. The meeting was adjourned at about10 o'clock.

VIDEOSBarbara Hoffman. 2001. Womanhood andCircumcision: Three Maasai Women Have TheirSay. Cleveland State University: VisualAnthropology Center, Department ofAnthropology.Synopsis: a young married Maasai woman talkswith Hoffman about the importance of excisionin her life, then introduces her to the woman'syounger sister who is about to undergo theprocedure. The girl has witnessed "circumcision"of girls before; nonetheless, she is eager in manyways to have her day in the spotlight. We see herbefore and after (but not during) the surgery. Herpoint of view is made evident to us through herfacial expressions and body language. WhenHoffman talks with the mother of the girls, nowpost-menopausal, about the experiences ofcircumcision and childbirth in her own life aswell as that of her daughters, the depth of adiachronic perspective is brought to bear. For distribution information contact BarbaraHoffman, Cleveland OH 44114 (USA) phone:2166873549; fax: 2166879384; [email protected].
