President's MessageBy Ray Saunders

It has been quite a summer, both personally for the Pres, with an 11-day trip to bring home a new boat (an article will follow in ththe next Brass Binnacle), and for the Club, with a very successful 38 annual boat show and several well attended weekly

cruise nights. As this is my last message as President, I would like to thank all those who helped make this another successful year of boating and hanging out together.

I think the boat show was amazing. Although our boat count was down somewhat, we had a huge variety of rare and interesting boats, and in at least one case, the only boat of its type still in existence – the first of 5 ever built, the very one featured in the company's original ad campaign. Fully restored by its owner, it received the Best of Show and Peoples Choice Awards. Of course, I am referring to “Allez”, the stunning 48 foot 1930 Chris Craft cruiser owned by Louis and Josée Gagnon from St Jean sur Richelieu, Quebec.

The success of our boat show is directly related to the hard work and dedication of the MCBC members who donate their time to produce the show. I would like to thank the entire team including those volunteers not directly on the Boat Show Committee. I would especially like to acknowledge the extra efforts put out by Susan and John Richardson who not only run Registration and host our after show BBQ Awards party, but assisted me in many other ways this year while I was living in Brockville or away on the water. I would also like to thank Dinah and Dave Schofield for once again hosting the Friday evening preshow meet and greet party, as well as helping out the team in various other ways. Naturally, without boats and displays we would not have a show: thus, I would especially like to thank all members who shined up their boats and brought them to the show!

By all accounts our Wednesday evening cruise-ins are our best loved events. I would like to thank each of the host couples for putting up with the gang, rain or shine. It appears we all love to eat and swap stories about our boating adventures and families, especially about the grandchildren. We tried something new this year – a Saturday late afternoon/early evening potluck dinner cruise-in, hosted by Wilma and Ron Jelley. It was such a great success, that several members recommend adding a few more during 2014 to replace some of the Wednesday evening events. Naturally, the yearend Burritt's Rapids picnic is always well attended and looked forward to all summer by many in the club. Pre-thanks to the Jelley's for once again hosting this fun event.

As I close, I would like to say that it has been an honor to be your President and I wish to thank all who helped make this year a success, especially Judy, my wife.

FAMILY MAGIC

As another boating season closes, it is obvious that our “passion” with old boats is being more and more supported by our children and grandchildren.

Amazed and delighted with what has been happening at the Wylliedome in Osgoode (see the article), we must know that there is magic in those activities. Without our young family members, John and I would never have tackled a meal for four score boaters after this year's Boat Show. Next are the Keyes lads: Ted and Tom (see the article). Not to mention they were active on the docks and at the launch during the Show. Most of us have experienced the lovely Scholfield-Gould connection and their charming granddaughters.

Old Boats. They are OUR passion. While our offspring may only be infatuated, they want to be a real, valid part of our lives. And so, they participate and facilitate. There are many more examples…but these are the ones that have touched me this season.

I borrowed my title from the Wyllies, who have named their treasure “The Family Madjic”. But we have all experienced it. MAGIC. Family magic! This is a salute to our families and to the memories made with them.

A Tree Grows in Osgoode

On May 4, 2013, the Manotick Classic Boat Club presented Ian and Debra Wyllie with a Pyramidal English Oak tree at the Spring Social at the Wyllie-Dome. The City of Ottawa agreed to plant the tree in the park on Taylor Way just around the corner from the Wyllie’s home. The tree was planted on July 27 and a plaque prepared by Sheldon Beveridge was installed on August 30. Please feel free to drop by and check it out.

Michigan Boat ShowBy Carman Keyes

MCBC member Carman Keyes and his son Ted participated in the Michigan Chapter ACBS 28th Annual Antique and Classic Boat Show entitled "Where It All Began" on June 21st-23rd, 2013. This show has always been held on the property of the old Chris Craft Plant marina at Algonac, Michigan, until this year. Last year, with the water table so low, it was unsafe to try and hold it there this year. The committee found the marina at St. Clair which had floating docks and was much safer.

Friday morning we registered, unloaded the boat on its trailer out of the newly fitted big trailer, and launched the boat. What an audience we had when we arrived and started to unload. Such disbelief at what came out of the trailer. Between 12:00 and 5:00 PM there was a scenic cruise along the St. Clair River where we met or passed lake freighters, and had a picnic lunch at a private island. Wow, what a cottage we lunched at! Friday evening we were entertained at a Captain's welcoming party.

Saturday morning we prepared our boats for the show, with coffee, juice, doughnuts and bagels available for us. The boat show began at 9am and ran until 4pm. At one of the first docks out, what did I spy? Murray and Sarah's boat Warpath. However, when checking the transom, it was Vagabond, not Warpath. At 12:00 noon a Flag Raising Ceremony was conducted with the singing of the Star-Spangled Banner and O Canada. What a nice touch. Judging proceeded and to our delight Grandpa's Dream was presented 1st place in its category: Early Contemporary Wood 1976-1988. Saturday late afternoon was left open to relax, check over the boats, and make new friends.

Sunday morning we travelled downstream again to the Hansen Island and had a wonderful brunch at the Old Club. After brunch we traveled back to the St. Clair Marina (about 30 miles), got the boat onto its trailer, cleaned the boat, and reloaded it into the big trailer. Eight hours later we were home. What a wonderful weekend we had at a very well-organized boat show, along with the perfect weather and superb hosts.

Many Hands Make Light WorkIt's amazing what happens when your sons and a couple of friends get together for a day. Check this out.

Saturday, August 24, 2013, John Richardson organized a hull scraping/sanding/painting event at Ian Wyllie's Wylliedome for Ian and his sons Matt, Jeff and Chris. Mike Krzyzanowski brought his compressor and there were two generators there to supply power.

The goal was to strip and paint the white sides of Ian's 1957 24’ Chris-Craft Cruiser. Mike started off sanding the major stuff while John, Jeff and Chris followed doing the detailed sanding and Matt brought up the rear getting the high spots and wielding the vacuum cleaner.

When Mike finished both sides, he thought he might just as well continue with the transom.

When all that was done, a first coat of paint was applied. Matt, Jeff and Chris put on a second coat on Sunday and came back and put on a third coat on Monday. All I can say is wow!

CRUISE NIGHTS – 2013

This summer Mother Nature conspired to keep us out of our boats…but she didn't succeed. Cold to start. Hot and cold. Then hot and more hot and humid and more humid. Faithfully, every Wednesday night a goodly crew showed up to chat and snack and raise a glass or two. Hosts this year all deserve a thank you for pulling out the chairs and the mosquito lamps and welcoming guests by river and road. We never had a lot of boats each night, but the final social at Kelly's Landing in September boasted two of the regular vessels: Goulds and Jelleys – Warpath and Rawley. Great fun and looking forward to soft water soon. In the mean time, lets get those boats ready for the Burritt's Run – our last soft weather social of the year.

Rideau Ferry Yacht Club Regatta (RFYCR)August 17, 2013

By Mike Kryzyanorwski

Wow.......talk about the best weekend in recent years for the running of the RFYCR and the calmest water in memory. This is a bi-annual event and that takes over vintage racing the off-year for the Clayton Raceboat Regatta.

Many first time participants and officials from the U.S. and Australia attended.

Each day would start at 8:30 AM with a mandatory drivers meeting since the regatta is a sanctioned event under the

Canadian Boating Federation as well as follows rules of the American Power Boat Association Vintage Division.

Special recognition was made of local wining racers from years long gone. These were prominent men and teams that gave

significant support to the founding and continuation of the RFYC.

The first heats of the day were the small outboard classes then moving towards larger outboard and inboard craft.

Miss Canada IV was the feature boat of the Regatta and did several parade laps for the crowd. The boat was fresh off a full

restoration and is in its first season of testing and race course trials with its Rolls Royce Griffon engine.

Following Miss Canada IV were the boats of the thunderous Grand Prix hydroplane class reaching speeds in excess of 100

mph. Midnight Miss from Australia ran the race course with paint blistering lap times and was a huge hit both with the crowd

and the participants. The boat was recently shipped to North America by sea container, an 8 week journey, in order to

participate in 2013 North American Vintage Raceboat Regattas.

Several other special activities during Regatta weekend were children's boat building, the Sea Flea Race Challenge,

cardboard boat building and race, and the 6 hour skiff building event.

The RFYC event crew and their many volunteers hosted a fabulous Regatta. It continues to grow in popularity and size and

we look forward to the 2015 Regatta.
