By Fred [email protected] BTP was able to slow this busy fellow down long enough to find out about what he’s been doing for the club recently. Relative newcomers to Heritage Palms and year-round residents, Stu and Susi have become familiar faces in many circles because of their passion for golf and his willingness to share his many talents through volunteering. He is currently Handicap Chairman of the HPMGA, a member of the HP Green Committee, serves on the ad hoc program management committee for the capital improvement project and is part of the Heritage Palms Veterans Association team that is researching appropriate charitable recipients. He also volunteers with the Florida Golf Association Handicap Committee, slope rating area courses. A native Michigander, Stu and Susi went to Mason County Central HS in Scottsville where he was a four sport letterman in high school (football, basketball, baseball and track). Stu retired from an Air Force career holding the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He graduated from the Air Force Academy with a double major in Engineering Management and Economics and also holds a Masters of Science in Business from UCLA. He and Susi, have been married for forty-seven years and have a daughter Jennie. Following in her dad’s footsteps Jennie and her husband Steve also recently retired from the Air Force as officers. BTP: (catching Stu scurrying off to the clubhouse with a red binder under his arm) Hey Stu! What committee meeting are you off to now? STU: Capital Improvement Project. BTP: How’s the project coming? STU: There’s a lot going on. Things you wouldn’t necessarily expect. We’ll find out a lot today. BTP: What made you decide on a career in the military Stu? STU: I thought service to the nation should be an important element of one’s life. Still do. And I instilled that in my family. My daughter Jennie joined the Air Force without

A Few Minutes In The Grill Room With...Stu Draper

Stu Draper

me even knowing about it. BTP: What did you do in the Air Force? STU: I have a strong background in physics and mathematics so I mostly worked in the areas of operations research and supply chain management. I worked on projects like the installation of nuclear ground launch cruise missiles in Europe. Pointing the nukes at Russia. Something like that takes seven or eight years to plan and implement. We’d guide scientists looking to improve operations, figuring out things like how to get maximum production out of a bomber sortie or how best to refuel planes in the air on long missions. We’d run thousands of simulations and draw up hundreds of calculations and their cost effectiveness. BTP: A career in the military requires a lot of pulling up stakes. STU: We moved eighteen times during my career. BTP: What was your favorite billet Stu? STU: Family-wise I’d say Germany, very nice there. Professionally, however, it was Vietnam for me. Everything was so urgent and intense. Everything felt like it mattered. BTP: What did you do after the Air Force? STU: My longest job was as a systems engineer at one of the MITRE Corporation’s sites. I was also the Industrial Engineering Manager for Cessna Aircraft. I met Arnold Palmer when he took delivery of the first Citation 10 and also met coach Roy Williams and the CEO of Harley Davidson. All really interesting people! BTP: You’d meet lots of famous people buying private aircraft I bet. How did you and Susi meet? STU: Susi sat in front of me at Sunday school when we were kids. She had a very long ponytail. What a temptation! We got married two days after I graduated from the Academy. She is my best friend. Our daughter Dawnell was born nine months and two weeks after we got married and Jennie came along fifteen months later.

BTP: I can see you weren’t wasting any time. How did you wind up at Heritage Palms? STU: I worked with Pete Bredeau. He and Dianna lived here and liked it, suggested we check it out. So we did and we sure are glad! This place and the people here are beyond merely terrific. We owe a great deal to Dianna and Pete. BTP: Thanks for sharing your story with us Colonel. Good luck with your game and enjoy your season.

Daughter Jennie was about to enter Michigan State University where she majored in ROTC, philosophy, and computer science. Susi is in the middle. Picture was taken at Stu’s retirement ceremony in October 1988 in the Pentagon, Maj. Gen. Ron Fogleman (later CSAF) presided.

Stu and Susie have lived in HP almost 3 years.

By Jeanne [email protected] The world of tennis takes you in, wraps you up, and can change your life forever. Gwen Berestecki, and her daughter, Thais Berestecki-Stamatopolous, and her children, Jack 10, and Zoe 9, know all about that. What started out as “something we could do together,” says Thais, “ended up being much more than that.” Gwen and Thais’s enthusiasm and zest for life jumps out at you immediately. “It’s all about fun,” says Gwen. Now on almost any given day, three generations of Beresteckis, Gwen and John, Thais and Mike, and their kids, Jack and Zoe, can be found on the tennis courts. And not always together, as each of them play on different teams ... lots of different teams.

Three Generations of the Berestecki Family Hold Court Gwen and John, who have been married for 41 years, have two daughters, Thais, who lives in HP, and Bethany, married to Louis Giles, has one son Lane, and currently resides in Woodridge, Illinois, a Chicago suburb. John worked in the automotive industry for 38 years. Over the course of their marriage, they lived in 8 cities courtesy of General Motors. The moves, included stints in Flint, Michigan, Pittsburgh, PA, Lordstown, Ohio, Rochester Hills, MI, Rochester, Michigan, Indianapolis, Marion, IN and finally retirement in Fort Myers where they’ve been settled here in Heritage Palms now for 8 years. So Gwen has had a lot of practice in meeting new people and making new friends. She says, “I love HP, it’s Front L-R: Jack & Zoe, Back L-R: John, Mike, Thais, Gwen

beautiful, and the folks who live here are friendly and diverse. There is a wonderful mix of available activities which is a great way to meet new people.” But Gwen, like many of us here before her, was drawn into the tennis program. “I think it’s the best program in southwest Florida; there is something for everyone. From ‘sprouts’ (the beginners program) with Carolyn, to the private instruction of the higher level players, all skill sets are addressed. There are a variety of clinics and teams for every level. Nurturing players of different abilities is a rare gift in a country club setting, and our tennis pros all have that gift. From beginners to club champions, everyone is important to our pros, Mike Lawver, Director of Tennis, and Carolyn Lawver, Head Tennis Pro. Together they have managed to set up a tennis program that few clubs can equal.” Thais, who was also born in Flint, MI, grew up in West Newton, a tiny town in rural Pennsylvania and still feels an affi nity to that town, population 2,500. “We had the fi rst day of deer season as a school holiday,” says Thais. Years later when she met and married Mike Stamatopolous, they lived in four different places, Tyler and Houston, TX, Chicago, and Hong Kong, before moving to HP three years ago to be near her parents. She has had what most of us would consider a very cosmopolitan life. For example, she has traveled to Cambodia, the Philippines, Mainland China, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Australia, Italy, France, England, Scotland, Greece, Mexico, Aruba, the Dominican Republic and Canada. Before she left Hong Kong to return to the states, Thais, who is an avid hiker, hiked and trekked the Himalayas with her dear friend. Husband Mike spent much of the time in Hong Kong on the road, which may have helped give Thais her ‘can do’ attitude. The experiences she encountered have all played a part of making her the intelligent, charismatic, and energetic gal she is...not to mention that her genetics played a big part as well.

Gwen, who plays on several LCWTL teams; the 3.5- the Cobalt, 4.0 and under, the USTA 3.0, the 3.5-, the 6.5 Ladies’ Combo, and the Ultimate 3.5 Doubles with HP resident Kathy Sherwood. She also likes to compete in local tournaments. Recently, Gwen and HP resident, Yolando Rameriz received

Read On...By Eileen [email protected] A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman is the book selected for December. Amazon reports: In this best-selling and delightful quirky debut novel from Sweden, a grumpy yet lovable man finds his solitary world turned on its head when a boisterous young family moves next door. We will meet December 4th from 2:30 – 4:00 PM at the Clubhouse Library. The meeting is open to all Heritage Palms members with one requirement: you must read the book before we meet. Sue Moriarty will lead the discussion. If you have questions, contact Eileen Wood 274-0244.

By Eileen Cruthers WGA [email protected] It’s an honor to represent the WGA as Treasurer for 2015-16 season. The Treasurer i s bas ica l ly the receiver of dues and overseer of distribution of those monies. You might be interested to know how the Treasurer’s role functions. One way is to assist the President and the Board in preparing a budget for the coming year. When working on that budget, the number of expected members for the season is the first piece of information to be considered. That number, times the dues, is how the board determines what funds are available. The next step is distributing those funds consistent with the leagues objectives. Each of the WGA special event committees receives a budget to help cover the costs of putting on the event. All of the leagues business-meeting lunches are partially subsidized as are the Christmas and Charity event lunches. In

Meet Our WGA Treasureraddition, dues are spent on the end of season award plaques, Hole-in-One plaques and award checks. Add to that charity contributions, photography and printing expenses and the coffers are nearly empty! The Treasurer is also responsible for maintaining the leagues financial statements which are available to all members. This year we moved our paper accounting into the electronic world. We have been able to both make payments and receive bills electronically, thanks to the support of Bob Kelly and Laine Mitchell. For the first time in 5 years, the Board of the WGA has voted to increase the cost of league play to be in effect this fall. The increase is $1.00 bag tip and an additional $0.50 for increased prizes bringing total cart fee on ladies’ day to $30.00. The recommendation for increasing the bag tip from $1 to $2 came as a suggestion from the membership and will bring us into line with other clubs where our members play LUSH and Interclub. Last season our membership totaled 334 (of my closest friends) and we expect at least that number this season. If I give you a big smile and say “Hi, it’s great to see you again, sweetie,” I really mean it. Please pardon my aging memory if I don’t call you by name. We should have a contest for the member who can remember the most names!

medals for winning the 2015 Gulf Harbour Fast Four Women’s 6.0 Division. Gwen is also active on the HTPA Board of Directors as Director of Membership. Husband, John, is Vice-President of the HP Master Board. Clearly, one family activity is ‘being involved.’ Thais, who plays on three LCWTL teams, the 3.5, USTA 3.0 with Gwen, USTA Ultimate Doubles 3.5, is also in the process of earning dual degrees at DePaul University, Chicago, online. “In this day of Skype, Independent Study Research Projects, an Academic Advisor, and a Professional Advisor, who just happens to be tennis friend Dorothy Slovak, it’s really not that difficult,” says Thais, who runs for stress release, peace and fullness. “It just requires utilizing your time effectively.” With two children, that’s not always easy. “One of the best aspects of tennis at HP,” says Gwen, “is that Mike, Carolyn, Larry, George and Sam all support the

social side of the tennis community. HTPA events, Saturday Round Robin, Sunday Advanced Round Robin, Cardio Tennis, and Merrill Lynch clinics are all opportunities for meeting new people and forging new friendships. Fun is always number one.” John, plays on the men’s Blue Team, Thais’s husband, Mike, enjoys playing socially, and Jack and Zoe both play in HP’s Junior’s Program. Zoe just finished the USTA Early Development Training Camp. She had previously taken lessons in Hong Kong. “From Sprouts to heavy hitters,” says Thais, “there is always something for everyone at HP.” Thais agrees with her mother on the merits of the tennis program. “The teaching pros are very patient, encouraging, and excited to bring a new player along. They have been so kind to me and my family. And secondly, the people in the tennis community are absolutely wonderful. We’ve been fortunate enough to have met some of the most caring, friendly, engaging, and supportive people and are delighted to be a part of it. Carolyn’s bright sparkly smile in the pro shop, sets the tone for a wonderful day of tennis. Our children, the third

generation of our family, feel safe, content, and appreciated by the incredible group of people in the tennis family.” “What started out,” she continues, “as a way to spend more time with my Mom, ended up being life changing.” Tennis truly does wrap you in its arms.

Something for Everyone!By Darcie Libby, [email protected] Welcome to the 2015-2016 HPWGA season! Handicap chair, Jean Hoppe and her assistant, Margie Holsbeke have put together a great season of games for league play on Wednesdays. I encourage you to join the WGA, if you haven’t already, and to pick up the league booklet in the Pro Shop that describes this season’s schedule. There are also a number of special events that I want to draw to your attention.

* * * * * The annual joint Christmas luncheon with the HP9HLGA on December 9, 2015 is entitled “The Nutcracker Suite.” Chair Sharon Waldsmith and her committee from both leagues encourage members to dress in traditional Christmas colors or go daring as nutcrackers or dancers, though no costume is

HPWGA 2015-16 Schedulerequired. St. Martin De Porres Community Outreach which provides food, clothing and educational assistance to Lee County residents in need has been selected as the organization to receive our holiday giving. The committee suggests $20.00 gift cards to Walmart as a donation, though any amount will be welcomed and appreciated.

* * * * * This year’s Event Night, “Come to the Derby – Run for the Roses” is scheduled for February 1, 2016. This is a non-golfing event intended to provide entertainment and a different type of opportunity to socialize with your fellow league members. Sue Mistro and her committee are working on a fun-filled, interactive evening. Members are invited to savor the popular Kentucky Derby food and drinks, try their skills on “horse-play,” compete in an optional “Derby Hat” contest, and participate in the evening’s major event - horse racing. Friends will have the opportunity to own, name, and race a derby horse and compete for prizes. There will be plenty of chances for everyone to share in the payoffs. Will your favorite horse be “running for the roses?”

* * * * * February 24, 2016 will bring out the kid in all of us as we celebrate the “Wonderful World of Disney” for this year’s Challenge Classic, led by Elaine Dupuis and Barbara Barlow. So loot your grandchildren’s closets for Disney paraphernalia and watch for more information coming soon!

* * * * * Our annual Charity Tournament, to be held on March 16, 2016 will benefit Our Mother’s Home, an agency that assists teen mothers and their children transition from foster care and human trafficking to stable happy and productive lives. Rose Bauer and her committee are working to bring you an exceptional event for an exceptional cause.

* * * * * Many thanks to all of the talented women who have volunteered their time and energy to create these opportunities for us to meet, enjoy our time together and to positively impact our community.

Kind & CaringBy Jane [email protected] Margaret Brantley passed away on September 29th, 2015. Margaret was not only the founder of our community’s “Blankets of Love” but was also, within herself, a blanket of love to so many here and to a multitude of infants, children and friends everywhere. I met Margaret, November 2012 during a HP 9-Hole Golf Assn. Meeting/Luncheon. I was involved in a community project to help victims of Hurricane Sandy. In an announcement I asked if anyone had items that would assist families affected by the hurricane. I never made it to my seat. Margaret and Carol Hach came rushing to me. Margaret said my request was an answer to her quandary as to where the newest bunch of children’s blankets would go. I wasn’t home 5 minutes when Margaret led her group into my home and lovingly placed more blankets than I could count into mailing boxes. I stood in amazement and will never forget her kindness and her sincere desire to help those in need. Ladies who had the privilege of knowing her all describe her as a lady “filled with talent, sweetness, kindness, generosity, friendship, and beauty, both inside and outside.” Carol Hach met Margaret in 1999 and quickly discovered they enjoyed the same activity and soon Pat Bowers, Graceann Colarusso, Barbara Martens- Gregg, and Anita Buttarazzi, joined in their pursuit to make blankets for children in need. Their early donations went to LINUS, an organization with 400 chapters in the U.S. that donated blankets to critically ill children. Soon other organizations benefited from the group’s talents. Margaret made contact with HealthPark Hospital and more children’s lives were touched with love. Ronald McDonald House, Project Label, local shelters and local police departments were also added to the recipients’ list. Carol describes Margaret as “truly a fiber artist,” and notes that she had an endless bank of ideas. She “permeated our

lives in every good way possible.” At a garage sale, Carol was looking for printed fabric to repurpose into story book quilts. The lady selling the fabric asked Carol what she was going to do with it. Carol explained and the owner looked astonished! She was a pediatric nurse at HealthPark and shared with Carol how the blankets and quilts were appreciated more than anyone could ever imagine, especially the children. Carol received a debt of thankfulness and the fabric at no charge. As the years passed, a quilting guild evolved. “Project Linus” morphed into “Blankets of Love.” More ladies joined and more friendships developed. “Blankets of Love” were covering needy school families, girls leaving homes due to family issues, and other groups that just needed a blanket of love to make them feel better. Margaret also made pillow cases, table runners and other beautiful items that decorated her home. Pat Bowers lovingly recalled that once she admired a quilted and embellished table runner. A few weeks later, Margaret arrived at her door with one for her. Pat said, “It’s still my favorite item and every

time I see it I feel blessed to have had Margaret’s friendship and times shared.” Jan Mathews knew Margaret from the Nine Hole Golf League. She said Margaret was a “ray of sunshine” and saw her as an “inspiration.” She recalled asking Margaret to be a golf partner in a Nine Hole event, “and even on the golf course she was lovely and inspiring.” Chris Marani knew Margaret from the league. Her first impression of Margaret was “what a perfect lady she is.” Chris joined “Blankets of Love” and not only admired Margaret’s talent but also her “big heart” in wanting the “unfortunate to receive the treasured blankets.” Sharon Smith, another member of “Blankets of Love,” attended Margaret’s memorial in Michigan. Sharon shared that the funeral home was filled. She said Margaret had “touched so many hearts.” Sharon stated that the “Blankets of Love” ladies will be making a quilt in honor of Margaret and her passion to help children in need will continue. “When through one woman a little more love and goodness, a little more light and truth, comes into the world, then that woman’s life has had meaning.” Alfred Delp I thank all who contributed to this article…the ladies who sent e-mails, those who called me, individuals who stopped me to share a word or thought, and to those who supported this writing, especially Bob Brantley who said, “There is absolutely nothing bad to say about Margaret.”

Margaret displays her favorite personal quilt.

By Tim CooneySteering Committee [email protected] The second meeting of the Heritage Palms Veterans Association (HPVA) was held on November 2, 2015 and was attended by approximately 50 members as well as some friends of the HPVA. Please take note that the HPVA meeting is open to all veterans as well as the public. Meeting dates (as well as a wealth of information) can be found on the website at (heritagepalmsveteransassociation.com). At the time of this writing (early Nov.) the HPVA was invited to participate in the Cape Coral Veterans Day Parade. In order to properly represent Heritage Palms the association is also looking into an “official” HPVA hat and shirt. It is likely you will be seeing some of these appear within our community in the near future. Membership is now at 184 with 7 new members joining during the November meeting. If you are a veteran and are interested in joining the HPVA please contact us at www.heritagepalmsveteransassociation.com. As the year progresses for the organization there are plans in place to hold a casino night in February and to schedule guest speakers for some of the monthly meetings. Similar to the highly successful golf outing 100% of the funds received from the casino night will be used to benefit veterans in Southwest Florida in need of assistance. The HPVA Charities Committee continues to evaluate and search for worthy charities that provide maximum benefits for veterans in need and maintains little or no administration costs. During the meeting Fred DeCotis and his team Dale Pero, Jerry Sauro, Ed Falatovich, Stan Knight, Stu Draper, and Dan Barden were recognized with a certificate of appreciation for their efforts in organizing the first HPVA Golf Outing.

Veterans Ranks Continue To Grow Following the monthly meeting, the group gathered for social time, watching the first half of the Monday night football game, playing cards, meeting new members, and even enjoying card tricks. Pictured is Bob Mitchell performing his terrific card tricks for fellow vets Larry Lauzon, Mike Brake, and Ron Anliker. Bob captivated his audience for quite some time performing trick after trick. We’re still trying to figure out how he did some of his magic! The Monday night football game between the Colts and

Panthers was good to Leo Crowley, John Deresky, Jerry Quinn, and Terry Ruettiger. Each of them won $50 in the Monday night football pool. We were able to catch a picture of Dan McWeeny presenting Terry Ruettiger his winnings. The December meeting will be held on Thursday evening, December 3rd at the Lodge beginning at 7:00 PM. Hope that you can make it! Did you know the flag was first called “Old Glory” by a young sea captain named William Driver in 1824?

By Bev CampbellOne of Harry’s two favorite daughters. ...Just a postscript to last month’s BTP article about our Dad, “Harry” Campbell. Our family gathered for two days of Harry’s 90th birthday celebration (November 3 & 4). We reserved rooms in the lodge to gather our family to share lots of old pictures and papers! There were family stories... some fact (some fiction) that made us laugh and shed a few tears! Dad’s two surviving siblings made the trip for the celebration, plus a brother-in-law, two cousins and two nieces! The first evening we journeyed “off campus” to travel to beautiful Sanibel-Captiva with family conversation along the way. The Bubble Room on Captiva was a delightful venue for the occasion because it is filled with nostalgic decor. The second evening (Dad’s 90th Birthday) we hosted family and Dad’s Heritage Palms “family” for a dinner in the Clubhouse. The unexpected surprise for Dad was the outpouring of birthday wishes and “thank you’s for serving our country” that he received from HP members and from the staff at Heritage Palms. The article in last month’s Between the Palms made our Harry a celebrity! What an amazing community we live in! Thank you to all the HP members and staff who helped make our Dad’s 90th a truly memorable occasion!

Kathy Haan and Steve Hall met on October 16, 2013 at the Club where a group of friends gather on Wednesday nights. They became friends, were engaged Christmas 2014 and were married on October 17, 2015. The ceremony took place at St. John XXIII in Fort Myers, FL by Father Bob Tabbert, whose sermon was “right on” says Kathy. “He talked about getting little surprises from heaven - and Steve and I feel that’s what brought us together.” Their wedding & marriage celebration was a weekend of events. It started on Thursday with a pizza party for immediate family at their villa. On Friday, 14 foursomes played an 8:00 shotgun scramble, driving in carts decorated with bells and wedding accented bags with golf balls imprinted with “Kathy & Steve.” After golf, they enjoyed a great picnic prepared by Larry and his Tiki Bar staff. The lodge was beautifully transformed by Mary Scharlatt and Michell Nealon Riley. After dinner the music began and it was time to “Let The Party Begin.” On Saturday, after the 1:00 wedding, Don & Bev Hughes

“Wedding Made In Heaven and HP”

hosted an “in between” the wedding and reception party on their lovely lanai and outdoor kitchen. There were drinks and hors d’oeuvres served on a beautiful sunny day. The reception at the HP Clubhouse began at 5:00 PM followed by dinner at 6:00. Music was provided by Kathy & Steve’s favorite band, Double Dare. To prepare for the dancing, they previously took professional dance lessons to

Chef Norbert, Dan Demczck, Amanda Schlitter, Bob Kelly, Larry German and the entire staff did a remarkable and impressive job and it was appreciated by Kathy, Steve and their guests. By K.C. Grosse,Article and PicturesPublicity [email protected] October was time to leave behind the summer and get started in November with the new golf season. So we ended summer with a big event planned by Jane Balfour, KISS (Keep It Simple Summer) chairperson, and her committee. Fun Day “Football” was open to all members of our league as well as outside 9-Hole guests from other clubs. There were over 220 ladies registered with each player declaring her football team colors when she registered. The New England Patriots beat out the Chicago Bears for fi rst place in the team color department. Kelly Greens came in fi rst with highest attendance. A “tailgaters” buffet was served and everyone enjoyed a great day in spite of the poor weather. The camaraderie was amazing and spirits were not dampened. HP has participated in the summer KISS events since it began two years ago. It is made up of the area 9-hole

We are always proud of how our golf staff handles the event and the ladies love our lunches! November began the new season with the HPLNGA Board meeting for the fi rst time for the 2015-16 golf season. Many plans had been made in the spring, but this meeting was time for adjustment and affi rmation. Currently we have 190 players and know from last year’s history that this number will grow in the new year to about 300. A l l b o a r d m e m b e r s attended as well as most committee chairs along with our pro, Mary Page. The opening luncheon theme was Happy Birthday on Nov. 4 with a delicious lunch prepared by our great chef and terrific service by our wait staff. Then out to an afternoon of golf for 124 players. Thanks to all of our HP staff for making this a special 13th celebration.
