Even though this is a yearly occurrence, I still find myself unprepared. Lent is a season of preparation and introspection. It is a season where we are called to look inside ourselves, often in ways that are uncom- fortable. The scripture that begins the Lenten journey is Jesustemptation in the wilderness. This scene sets the stage for what Lent is supposed to be for all of us, a time to wrestle with our temptations and identify the attitudes or actions that we can leave at the cross at the end of the season. The difficulty with this is that we dont like to talk about our temptations. We dont like to spend an extended period of time in the uncomfortable space of looking at our faults and being honest with the reality of our imperfections. However, when we do commit to this journey, we almost undoubtedly end up better off at the end than at the beginning. Part of this is that we practice a sense of spiritual discipline which allows us the possibility of walking closer with God in our spiritual journey. We are able to identify aspects of our lives that are not conducive to our thriving. It also reminds us of the importance of the grace of God because no matter how much time we spend working on our imperfections, we will always fall short of perfection. The good news of the Lenten season, and the entirety of the Gospel, is that our perfection is not what saves us; It is the perfection of Gods grace in our lives that does. I would encourage you this Lenten season to spend time doing the hard and unpleasant work of looking inside yourself to reflect on what needs to be left behind in order for you to live Gods potential in your life. This is the purpose of fasting. By reducing our dependence on other things, we trust God more fully. Think of fasting as something more than giving up a guilty pleasure or vice; Think of it more as changing attitudes that diminish the image of God in ourselves or in our views of others. There is a list of things to fast from that makes its rounds on social media this time of year, which I believe is attributed to Pope Francis a few years ago. I leave this list with you now for your reflection on looking deeper into yourselves and using this season to grow in your faith by removing harmful things from your life. Use this season to let go of things that hurt you and embrace the grace of God in the midst of our imperfections. continued on page 3

Communion: March 1

Friends,

This March begins a journey that we take every year in the church calendar, the

journey through the Lenten season. Even though this is a yearly occurrence, I still

find myself unprepared. Lent is a season of preparation and introspection. It is a

season where we are called to look inside ourselves, often in ways that are uncom-

fortable. The scripture that begins the Lenten journey is Jesus’ temptation in the

wilderness. This scene sets the stage for what Lent is supposed to be for all of us, a

time to wrestle with our temptations and identify the attitudes or actions that we can

leave at the cross at the end of the season.

The difficulty with this is that we don’t like to talk about our temptations. We don’t

like to spend an extended period of time in the uncomfortable space of looking at

our faults and being honest with the reality of our imperfections. However, when we

do commit to this journey, we almost undoubtedly end up better off at the end than

at the beginning. Part of this is that we practice a sense of spiritual discipline which

allows us the possibility of walking closer with God in our spiritual journey. We are

able to identify aspects of our lives that are not conducive to our thriving. It also

reminds us of the importance of the grace of God because no matter how much time

we spend working on our imperfections, we will always fall short of perfection. The

good news of the Lenten season, and the entirety of the Gospel, is that our perfection

is not what saves us; It is the perfection of God’s grace in our lives that does.

I would encourage you this Lenten season to spend time doing the hard and

unpleasant work of looking inside yourself to reflect on what needs to be left behind

in order for you to live God’s potential in your life. This is the purpose of fasting. By

reducing our dependence on other things, we trust God more fully. Think of fasting

as something more than giving up a guilty pleasure or vice; Think of it more as

changing attitudes that diminish the image of God in ourselves or in our views of

others. There is a list of things to fast from that makes its rounds on social media

this time of year, which I believe is attributed to Pope Francis a few years ago. I leave

this list with you now for your reflection on looking deeper into yourselves and using

this season to grow in your faith by removing harmful things from your life. Use this

season to let go of things that hurt you and embrace the grace of God in the midst of

our imperfections.

Pastor Dan’s message continued from page 1

Fast from hurting words and say kind words.

Fast from sadness and be filled with gratitude.

Fast from anger and be filled with patience.

Fast from pessimism and be filled with hope.

Fast from worries and trust in God.

Fast from complaints and contemplate simplicity.

Fast from pressures and be prayerful.

Fast from bitterness and fill your heart with joy.

Fast from selfishness and be compassionate to others.

Fast from grudges and be reconciled.

Fast from words and be silent so you can listen.

In Christ,

Pastor Dan

LOCAL EVENTS Cornwall Iron Furnace

Charter Day

Sunday, March 8th FREE ADMISSION from noon to 4:00 p.m. Charter

Day commemorates the granting of the charter

William Penn received from King Charles II of

England over three centuries ago. The king granted

the land in exchange for debt owed to Penn, thus

providing Penn a place to establish a community

free of religious persecution, known as his “Holy

Experiment”. Stationed throughout the buildings,

trained guides will provide information on the

history of the Furnace, its operations, and museum

collections. Guests are encouraged to dress warmly,

as the buildings can be quite chilly this time of year.

Visitors may also enjoy viewing the display of

minerals originally collected by workers at the

Cornwall Mines; formerly owned by the Bethlehem

Steel Corporation.
