Page Three Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph

Two days after Christmas this year we celebrate the Feast of the Holy Family. This feast tends to be lost in the glory of Christmas. It deserves a better fate. The family is the place where we first learn of faith and love. The family is the first place where we meet Jesus. As our Baptismal rite says “(parents)…are the first and best teachers of their children in the ways of faith…” From the Holy Family of Nazareth we learn the value of obedience. Jesus went down to Nazareth and was obedient to Mary and Joseph. We learn also the value of a more simple style of life. How important today to teach our children by example as well as word, the difference between needs and wants, the value of self-denial and self-sacrifice, the importance of being team players in an overly individualistic world. So perhaps we should pray to the Holy Family for all the families of our parish and of our world. May we and they teach the next generation to walk in the ways of peace and brotherhood taught to us by the Lord Jesus, born to us in that little town of Bethlehem. This is indeed a great challenge! But a necessary one. As you and I are most aware there is much to be done. On the nine nights before Christmas people in Mexican villages give Mary and Joseph a better reception than they got long ago in Bethlehem. The Mexican people commemorate “has Posades”, meaning the inns or lodging places. After dark the villagers walk in a long procession carrying candles and playing musical instruments as they bring the figures of Mary and Joseph to the host family of that evening. They knock on the door, ask for shelter and the hosts welcome the Holy Family into their home. “Come into our humble home”, the hosts say, “and welcome. And may the Lord give shelter to my soul when I leave this world.” This Christmas time do we welcome the Holy Family into our hearts and homes? Christ on His birthday calls us to heal divisions among our family and friends, to welcome into our lives and homes those from whom we are estranged. Every Christmas can be a new opportunity to become a “better innkeeper” to reach out in love to all who need the light and warmth that Jesus alone brings into our homes and world. Merry Christmas and may the Lord be always in your hearts and homes!!

THE HOLY FAMILY OF JESUS, MARY AND JOSEPH

First Reading: Sirach 3:2-6, 12-14 Sirach emphasizes the importance of honoring one’s parents. He explains that spiritual riches will come to those who are kind to their mother and father. Second Reading: Colossians 3:12-21 Paul advises us to treat each other with kindness and mercy and to forgive as God forgives us. His words remind families to always love and respect one another and let Christ’s peace reign in their hearts and in their homes. Gospel: Luke 2:41-52 When Jesus was twelve years old, the Holy Family traveled to Jerusalem to celebrate the feast. Jesus did not return with the company. Instead, he stayed in Jerusalem, sitting among the teachers while amazing them with his understanding and questions. When found by his concerned parents, Jesus reminded them that he must be in the house of his Father. Returning together, Mary kept these things in her heart. Please take note: If you have intentions of being a sponsor in the near future, you must be a registered parishioner for

at least four months to obtain a Sponsor Certificate. A sponsor certificate is necessary for a person to act as a sponsor for someone who is receiving the sacrament of

Baptism or Confirmation.

Dear Parishioners, I would like to express my gratitude to all the people who made our Christmas celebration at Annunciation Parish so special…to those who decorated the Church, the Ushers, the Lectors, the Eucharistic Ministers, the Altar Servers, and the Musicians. I’d also like to congratulate our school children for the wonderful Christmas concerts and live Nativity.

Our Parish donated over 555 gifts to less fortunate families from our Giving Tree this year. I am amazed at the generosity of our parishioners to those less fortunate, especially in these economic times.

I would also like to thank Rocco Trombetta and the Knights of Columbus for the beautiful Neapolitan crèche in the lower Church. My sincere wishes for a blessed, healthy, and peaceful New Year to all our parishioners and their loved ones.

Sincerely,

The New Year is a time for new beginnings, new resolve, and many resolutions. Along with the usual weight-loss and exercise resolve, let this be a year of Spiritual resolve – to aid our ‘fitness’ for the hereafter! A few suggestions for getting 2016 off to a great start:

Set aside a deliberate minute for prayer each day

Be available to a brother or sister or neighbor or friend

Attend Mass one day during the week Give time Say a decade of the Rosary on the way to

school or work Give witness to faith through an act of service

or kindness to another Share abundance Stop in to church sometime during the day Join a Parish Ministry – Usher, Lector, Choir,

or Eucharistic Minister

Are you a registered parishioner? All new or unregistered parishioners are asked to please register in person at the

Rectory as soon as possible. Many items of importance will be mailed home in the course of the coming year. Please

call the rectory if you have any questions.

A FRESH PERSPECTIVE ON THE SUNDAY READINGS

The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary & Joseph December 27, 2015 “Not finding him, they returned to Jerusalem in search of him. On the third day they came upon him in the temple sitting in the midst of the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. All who heard him were amazed at his intelligence and his answers. ‘Why did you search for me? Did you not know I had to be in my Father’s house?’ But they did not grasp what he meant….His mother kept all these things in her memory.” How appropriate that today’s celebration follows so closely on the Bethlehem event of Christmas. We jump from the stable to the temple, twelve years, in just a few days. We will return to Bethlehem, but first we reflect on this search and rescue. Anxious parents, seeking a lost child, for three days. Where can He be? At last in a second home, the temple, and in conversation with teachers in His Father’s house. A harried mother’s question and a clear concise answer ‘did you not know that I had to be?’ As parents we too worry about our children, where ever they are on their journey of growth. We try to feed, clothe and teach them well. By word and example, we bring them closer to the Lord. As disciples, we too search for the Christ. We encounter Him at worship, where we offer prayer and praise. We encounter Him in the words of the bible. We might even decide to join a bible group, as well as read the scriptures at home alone or with my family. We encounter Him in our community of faith. It is not just me at mass or prayer, it is my ‘Holy Family’ where I share the values of the gospel in a challenging world. The picture of our families might be quite distinct. A single parent, an elderly couple, a widow or widower, a single person or extended family of relatives and friends. We are family through our baptism and faith. May we look to the family which settled in Nazareth as a model, with trials and tribulations, challenges, hurts and sorrow, but centered on the Person of Christ.
