Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are obligatory days of fasting and abstinence for Catholics. In addition, Fridays during Lent are obligatory days of abstinence. For members of the Latin Catholic Church, the norms on fasting are obligatory from age 18 until age 59. When fasting, a person is permitted to eat one full meal, as well as two smaller meals that together are not equal to a full meal. The norms concerning abstinence from meat are binding upon members of the Latin Catholic Church from age 14 onwards.

From Fr. Ray: February 9, 2018

Dear Parishioners, After twelve grace filled years with you I’ve been called to serve in another part of our diocese. I’ll remain here until late June. I do not know where my new assignment is at this time. I’m so blessed to have been here for twelve years. I’ll keep you in my prayers and I ask for your prayers as well.

With blessings of joy,

The Responsorial Psalm

“The unfolding of your words gives light” (Psalm 118:130). The Book of Psalms, also called the Psalter, is a collection of 150 poem-songs inspired by the Holy Spirit and entrusted to Israel in view of the day when Jesus, the Son of God, would use them to express his own prayer to the Father. The Church sings the psalms and, like Christ her Head, finds in them the expression of her own prayer. Psalm singing marks or accompanies various moments of the Mass. The responsorial Psalm chanted after the first reading is one such moment.

The text of the responsorial Psalm is given in the Lectionary. Psalms are best chanted to a simple melody that allows the sacred text to speak for itself. The Psalmist or Cantor sing the verses of the responsorial Psalm from the ambo, signifying that the Psalm, like the reading that preceded it, is the Word of God addressed to his people as well as their prayer to him. During the responsorial psalm the congregation remains seated, listening with reverent attention and singing the response after each strophe. The responsorial Psalm is a meditation: a prayerful repetition of the Word of God. The responsorial Psalm is the Word of God “taken to heart.”

From the Bishop: January 29, 2018

Diocese of Birmingham in Alabama Re: Ash Wednesday -- February 14, 2018

For the first time since 1945, Valentine’s Day falls this year on Ash Wednesday. Some have wondered whether a dispensation from the standard laws of fast and abstinence would be granted.

Out of respect for the importance of Ash Wednesday in the lives of so many -- including our non-Catholic brethren -- and the way this custom underlines the importance of the Lenten season at its outset, a dispensation will not be given.

Those who wish to celebrate Valentine’s Day may fittingly do so the day before (Mardi Gras) or on another non-penitential day. The good Lord, who suffered so much out of love for us, will surely reward our fidelity and sacrifice! A blessed Lenten season to all!

Most Reverend Robert J. Baker, S.T.D. Bishop of Birmingham in Alabama

Lent Companions on the journey

During Lent our parish will participate in CRS Rice Bowl, a faith-in-action program that invites us to encounter our neighbor, as companions on the journey through

Daily prayer

Weekly fasting

Almsgiving that changes lives

We will reflect on how an encounter with our neighbor can be transformative. We will see how our prayers, fasting and alms can support those worldwide who are forced to flee their homes to find safety or better opportunities. As we prepare for this holy season, it is especially meaningful to come together in prayer as a family. Reflecting on the crosses of hunger, poverty and war carried by our brothers and sisters forced to flee their homes, we have an opportunity to also reflect on our roles in caring for them as members of our human family. Please consider these suggestion in your family’s Lenten plan:

Use your CRS Rice Bowl and Lenten Calendar to guide your prayer, fasting and almsgiving.

Read the Stories of Hope and daily reflections to inspire your Lenten journey--and guide your Lenten almsgiving.

Prepare simple, meatless meals on the Fridays of Lent to eat in solidarity with our brothers and sisters around the world.

Visit crsricebowl.org/stories to watch videos of the people and communities you support through your Lenten gifts to CRS Rice Bowl.

We will collect your CRS Rice Bowls at the end of Lent, so stay tuned to learn more. Thank you for participating in CRS Rice Bowl with your family.

Did you know? CRS Rice Bowl has a web page specifically for families. Visit crsricebowl.org/families for activities that will help your family grow in our Catholic faith this Lenten season.

CRS Rice Bowl is sponsored by Catholic Relief Services, the official international humanitarian agency of the Catholic community in the United States. CRS is motivated by the example of Jesus Christ to assist poor and suffering people in more than 100 countries on the basis of need, without regard to race, religion or nationality.

To have the opportunity to attend a Catholic school is a privilege we are proud to offer at Annunciation of the Lord parish. We are hopeful and excited about the opportunities and challenges before us. To fund the necessary teaching units, ongoing programs, and up-to-date technology used to facilitate competitive education, I invite your support. In order to provide the students, staff, and faculty of St. Ann Catholic School with the best opportunities to succeed, we are asking you to join with us in the St. Ann School Annual Appeal campaign in reaching our goal to raise $80,000 this year. Please prayerfully consider giving a gift to this worthy ministry. There will be opportunities for matching gifts. Every gift given to the school supports our commission to proclaim the good news with joy.

Let’s pull together once again as our parish always has to meet this challenge for the benefit of our children. Whatever amount you choose to give will be a blessing to the school. Your gift to St. Ann Catholic School is tax deductible. Please make all checks payable to St. Ann’s Educational Foundation. Funds given to this collection will qualify for St. Ann Society Circle acknowledgement. We have collected $3,851 as of February 4

January 26, 2018 Saints Timothy and Titus Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

“To defend and promote life, to show reverence and love for it, is a task which God entrusts to every human being.” [Pope John Paul II, Evangelium Vitae, 42; emphasis added.]

Since the Roe v. Wade and Doe v. Bolton Supreme Court decisions of January 22, 1973, at least 60 MILLION American babies have been killed by abortion. Two babies die by abortion every single minute of every single day in the USA. In Alabama, in 2014, 8080 babies died by abortion -- 22 children, a classroom full -- every single day. In 2016, 6642 babies died -- an 18% decrease; yet 18 babies in Alabama are still aborted every day.

Abortion is the greatest destroyer of human life in our world and a reflection of our national failure to accept responsibility to respect, protect, and nurture every human life. Beyond these unrepeatable lives, their offspring will never even exist, will never have the First Right which God intended for each of them -- The Right to Life!

“We cannot simultaneously commit ourselves to human rights and progress, while eliminating or marginalizing the weakest among us. Nor can we practice the Gospel of Life only as a private piety. American Catholics must live it vigorously and publicly, as a matter of national leadership, and witness, or we will not live at all.” [Living the Gospel of Life, 20]

We are reminded in Proverbs 24: “You may say that it is none of your business, but God knows and judges your motives...He knows. And He will reward you according to what you do.” [v. 11-12]

“Each of us has a mission: each of us is called to change the world, to work for a Culture of Life, a culture forged by love and respect for the dignity of each human person.” [Pope Benedict XVI, London, 9/18/10]

Pro-life means we mourn the loss of babies, and care about the safety and health of their mothers, while simultaneously working to protect all mothers and babies. We are called to live and work for the day when abortion will be unthinkable, when our constant dream that women and children will be safe from abortion will become the reality!

We can fulfill this challenge through grassroots public witness for the protection of human life at all stages through events such as 40 Days for Life campaigns, which will run from February 14 through March 25, 2018. There will be 40 Days for Life campaigns in Birmingham and Huntsville in our diocese, Mobile, and in 300+ other locations in the USA, involving dozens of nations.

I endorse the 40 Days for Life, a NOVENA OF MASSES will be conducted in our diocese, March 1-9, 2018. All priests and parishes are encouraged to offer one or more Masses during this time specifically for the permanent closing of Alabama Women’s Center in Huntsville, and for the conversion it its staff. After three Novenas of Masses previously offered for this abortion site, it was closed for 3.5 months in 2014. This will be the fifth Novena of Masses for this Huntsville abortion business. Please pray that God will answer our prayer for its ‘permanent’ closure!

For information about, and registration for, the February 14-March 25, 2018 40 Days for Life Campaign in Birmingham call (205)305-0950 or visit https://40daysforlife.com/local-campaigns/birmingham/; Huntsville, https://40daysforlife.com/local-campaigns/huntsville.

We, the People of Life, are the ‘antidote’ to abortion when we stand for God’s Truths and Principles even in the face of insults, mockery, and persecution - when we are silent no more. Dietrich Bonhoeffer, a Protestant pastor in Germany who was killed during the Nazi Holocaust because of his public protest, noted that “Silence in the face of evil is itself evil; God will not hold us guiltless. Not to speak is to speak. Not to act is to act.”

You may have heard this powerful quote from Juana, one of our diocese’s Hispanic 40 Days for Life participants: “learning about abortion brought me great pain in such a way that it awoke in me a desire to leave the comfort of my silence and raise my voice… Those who do not help the victim empower the oppressor. Please join us with an open heart, I ask, I beg… Let us work, let us live the experience of getting to work for the protection of Life!”

I invite all priests and all Catholics in the Diocese of Birmingham to “make abortion unthinkable” by praying and working every day to spread the Culture of Life!

Sincerely yours in Christ,

Most Reverend Robert J. Baker, S.T.D. Bishop of Birmingham in Alabama

2017-2022 Pastoral Plan

Implementation Team Summaries for 2017

Over the last year we have continued to work on implementing the Pastoral Plan that we established last year. As you may recall, that plan was centered on a few specific objectives that the parish community believed were required as we grow in Christ. Teams were established and began working on specific actions to accomplish these objectives and we published the team’s goals at the beginning of the year. We would now like to tell everyone what these teams have accomplished and what is planned for this year.

Talent Team The Talent Team has been meetings weekly to plan the Living Your Strengths Program for the parish. We will offer the Living Your Strengths classes to the parish on Tuesdays at 6:30-8:30 pm from January 30th and continuing for six weeks in the youth room. We will have the Ministry Fair after all Masses the weekend of February 24-25

th.

Unity Team The Parish Unity Team has grown and learned over this past year. We have continuously looked into areas where we can help provide uniting opportunities for our communities and to bolster current activities. We are continuing to reach out to all ethnic communities within the church to facilitate a variety of cultures and create a sense of family. We have also been on top of researching ESL classes within our church. Our biggest accomplishment for 2017 is setting a date for the first ever Parish Unity Festival in 2018! There will be more to come on this at a later date, but it is set for May 19, 2018. Please mark your calendars!

Stewardship

As the cure of the leper teaches, no one is abandoned in Christ. Are there those in our personal lives whom we have abandoned, treated like lepers? Or do we risk reaching out and touching those who may seem to us to be “unclean” or not worthy of our time or attention?
