The Liturgy of the Word

“Attend to the public reading of Scripture, to

preaching, to teaching” (1 Timothy 4:13). The

Liturgy of the Word is made up of the

readings from Sacred Scripture including the

responsorial Psalm or other chants that come

between the first two. The homily, Profession

of Faith, and Prayer of the Faithful develop

the message of the Scriptures, apply it to life,

turn it into prayer, and conclude this part of

the Mass.

In the readings and in the responsorial Psalm

God speaks to his people. When God speaks

he communicates himself; the Word of God

is an outpouring of his light, his life, and his

love. The Liturgy of the Word invites us to the

deepest kind of listening: a listening with the

ear of the heart and a humble readiness to be

changed by what is heard. “Let it be done to

me according to your word” (Luke 1:38).

The Word of God proclaimed in the liturgy

recalls God’s wondrous deeds in the past. It

reveals his will for us in the present. It holds

out the hope of “what no eyes has seen, nor

ear heard, nor the heart of man conceived,

what God has prepared for those who love

him” (1 Corinthians 2:9).

A Copy of Lane Monk’s Announcement from last Sunday:

My wife and I moved to this area in 1986. At first we lived in Priceville and became members of St. John the Baptist in Madison. Two years later, we moved to Decatur and transferred our membership to St. Ann’s, then we moved with the congregation to Annunciation. I was asked to speak to you today about Living your Strengths. There is an announcement in the bulletin with more information about this.

I was surprised to be asked to be a member of the Talent Team. I almost turned the invitation down for the following reasons: (1) Didn’t feel that I had much to contribute [Side note: I guess others see potential in you that you don’t see. God certainly does]; (2) Work a full-time job, which often includes Saturdays; and (3) Am a member of the Knights of Columbus and support a ministry that my wife is involved with.

I decided to give it a try for the following reasons: (1) Was curious to find out what my top talents were [At my age, it’s a little late to be just now finding out what my talents are, but, better late than never]; (2) Identified with the program and saw the potential that it could have on the lives of parish members and the Church; and (3) Was intrigued by the fact that the Talent Team would support all of the other ministries at Annunciation.

Unexpected benefits: Have truly enjoyed working with other members of the team, led by Connie Schartung, and getting to know them better.

BACKGROUND INFO ON BOOK

Many of us have grown up with the philosophy that you need to “fix” your weaknesses. This book, entitled Living your Strengths, now in its third edition, is based on a different philosophy. It was originally published in 2003 by Gallup Press to introduce the strengths philosophy to faith communities. The new edition is also available in Spanish.

We’re witnessing a Strengths Movement inspired by the belief that you are uniquely created by God and endowed by talents and gifts that are yours alone. This movement has the power to transform the Church, which is exactly what has occurred in Churches where it has been implemented. God places within you a calling, a calling to ministry. Your calling is what God wants you to do with your life. Your talents and strengths determine how you will get it done. When you discover your talents, you begin to discover your calling. You will be successful, because of who you are, not because of who you are not. Rather than “fix” your weaknesses, your dominant talents should be your primary focus.

EXPLANATION OF GALLUP’S CLIFTON STRENGTHS FINDER

In the back of the book is a unique code to access an online talent assessment. It takes about 40 minutes to complete. The assessment will yield your top five talents (There are 34 total.) Unlike skills and knowledge, talents naturally exist within you and cannot be acquired. They are God-given. The steps to building a strength are to first identify your dominant talents and to study the meaning of those talents, then to complement those talents with knowledge and skill.

ROLE OF TALENT TEAM AND DESIRED RESULTS OF THE PROGRAM

The role of the Talent Team is to help implement the Living Your Strengths program at Annunciation. The book and the online assessment will help you discover and affirm your top five areas of greatest talent and help you learn ways to apply your God-given talents to your congregation, as well as to your personal and professional life. We will offer classes, consisting of discussions, exercises, videos; and, using the results of the StrengthsFinder assessment, the Talent Team will help you to better understand your talents, how to develop them into strengths, and determine which ministries offer the best fit for your talents. Near the end of the classes, a Ministry Fair will be held at Annunciation to offer you the opportunity to learn more about the 70+ ministries at Annunciation.

Each ministry functions with a combination of talents and the best combination of talents varies among ministries. To better explain how this works, I’ll relay the story of when God spoke to Moses through the burning bush and called him to go back to Egypt to lead the Israelites to freedom.

Page 6: ANNUNCIATION OF THE LORD CATHOLIC CHURCH › wp-content › uploads › bulletin_2018-01-21.pdf · 1/21/2018  · EM H1 Debbie Cantrell H2 Fr. Ray H3 Richard Vernetti H4 Deacon Lappert

Moses was full of excuses and told God, “I have never been eloquent, neither in the past nor even now that you have spoken to your servant, but I am slow of speech and slow of tongue” (Exodus 4:10). So God found Moses a partner---Moses’ brother Aaron. Moses had a talent for leading and for devising strategy, but he couldn’t wow a crowd with his oratory or stand before kings and summon the appropriate words. Aaron could. And together, Moses and Aaron made a great team---which became even stronger with the addition of their sister Miriam.

CLOSING

If you are a relatively new member of this Church or have been a member for some time, but have not participated in a ministry, and a little voice inside you is urging you to become more involved, then the Living your Strengths program is an opportunity to learn more about your God-given talents and to help you find a ministry that is the right fit for your unique talents. You will be most happy in this situation. Joining a ministry should not be like another job and won’t be if you are enjoying what you do and using your talents. Above all else, we want you to be comfortable with your choice and have the freedom to switch to another ministry if your first choice is not the right fit for you.

Thank you for your time!

If you would like to learn more about your God given gifts and how to utilize these gifts to the fullest potential in your everyday life; if you would like to better understand what drives you and how your strengths can influence the challenges in your daily life then come to:

Living Your Strengths classes every Tuesday evening for 6 weeks starting on

January 30th from 6:30pm- 8:30pm

Everyone is invited. We have room for 50 people so please reserve your spot.

Resources needed:

The Living Your Strengths Catholic edition or the Strengths Finder 2.0* is necessary to take

the online assessment. Cost is $20.00. Make sure book is new and the code to take the assessment is unused. The code is found on the inside cover of Living Your Strengths and in the back of Strengths Finder 2.0 and can only be used once. The link to purchase a book with the code is: http://www.gallup.com/topics/gallup_press.aspx The book with code is also sold on Amazon, and Barnes and Noble. The first disciples responded immediately, leaving their fishing businesses and families — sacrificing a whole lot to follow the Lord. As disciples striving to embrace Jesus’s way of life, are we, too, willing to sacrifice a lot to further His kingdom?
