The Voice of the Voiceless Award will be presented to Mexican journalist ANABEL HERNANDEZ for her courageous journalistic work in the face of ongoing threats to her life and the lives of her family. The Border Witness Recognition will be presented to Mexican businessman, CARLOS GUTIERREZ, who, unable to continue paying extortion, had both legs cut off by a drug gang; and who undertook the Pedaling for Justice campaign, a 700 mile bike trip, to raise awareness of the impunity in Mexico and the plight of Mexican asylum seekers in the U.S. The Teacher of Justice recognition will be presented posthumously to MIKE O’CONNOR for his relentless advocacy for the protection of journalists as the Mexican representative on the Committee for the Protection of Journalists.
