BHSDG FINANCIAL REPORT 2017–2018

THE BERKELEY HIGH SCHOOL DEVELOPMENT GROUP (BHSDG) received and processed over $544,000 in donations and other revenues during the 2017–2018 school year. Approximately 58% of this revenue ($317,000) was directed to or earned by BHSDG to be distributed by our Board. From these unrestricted revenues, BHSDG provided funding for academic, athletic, artistic and club programs at Berkeley High School (BHS).

BHSDG received approximately $228,000 in donations and other revenue earmarked for specifi c learning communities, programs and departments. BHSDG acts as fi scal agent for these funds, at no cost, providing a signifi cant benefi t to BHS schools and programs. BHS schools and programs determine how they will spend these monies, and they were used for a wide range of educational enrichment opportunities.

The BHSDG’s fundraising and administrative expenses were $42,000 for the school year (or ~8% of total expenses). We carried forward $25,000 as a reserve for minimum administrative costs and anticipate funding our sponsored programs on an ongoing basis.

ONGOING BHSDG INITIATED PROGRAMS INCLUDE:

• Classroom Supplies grants for all teachers as well as funding for the registrar, library, counseling, career, and principal’s offi ces ($44,000)

• College and Career Support including the College Fair, college application and test fees & discretionary funds ($13,000)

• After-School Tutorial Program free for all BHS students ($33,000)

• First Step Scholarships ($55,000)

• Student Organizer available free to all students ($21,000)

OTHER BHSDG GRANTS INCLUDED:

BHSDG ANNUAL REPORT 2017– 2018 • WWW.BHSDG.ORG • 510.464.1181

BHSDG funds things that give students and teachers access to opportunities they won’t get anywhere else.

–ERIN SCHWENG, BHS PRINCIPAL

Smaller grants like new textbooks might not seem like a lot, but try reading a math problem that has graffi ti, or reading a page that is partially torn. New textbooks make a huge difference.”

–COLLEEN BURNS, 12TH GRADER

Attending the Supporting Access to Higher Education for Immigrant and Undocumented Students conference this past spring was an incredible experience. I came back with a lot of optimism and motivation to begin supporting the students and help educate other educators… and provide insight on undocumented students.

–JUAN C RODRIGUEZ, BHS AC/CAS COUNSELOR

The Storytelling Festival showed how storytelling can be an opportunity to get a message across or teach a lesson through the history and tales of different cultures.

–ALAN MILLER, BIHS ENGLISH TEACHER

I joined the BHSDG board because I wanted to contribute to the betterment of the educational experience for all BHS students in as many tangible ways as possible. It is inspiring to work in the company of so many dedicated and bright parent volunteers.

–STEPHEN PAIK, BHS PARENT AND BHSDG BOARD MEMBER AND DONOR

The college fair was very useful and interesting… I learned more about colleges I was already interested in, and discovered colleges I had never heard of.

–ANNABELLE HURLEY, 12TH GRADE

I personally contribute and participate in the activities of the BHSDG because I know how important the work is… Every student at BHS deserves the resources to help them rise and the BHSDG is one of the best ways to provide those resources.

–JOSH LANGENTHAL, BHS PARENT AND BHSDG DONOR

TECHNOLOGY: A GROWING NEEDLAST YEAR, the Berkeley High School Development Group funded over $30,000 in technology grants for badly needed equipment replacements and upgrades including replacing 20 aging and broken Chromebooks in the Library; 140 Kindle Fires for a pilot program that will reduce AP Chemistry textbook costs while enabling connected learn-ing opportunities in and out of the classroom; and digital data collection devices, CO2 and optical dissolved oxygen probes to replace broken and non-functioning equipment serving 660 IB/AP Biology, Chemistry and Environmental Science students each year.

The Development Group received and administered two designated donations totaling almost $80,000 for computers and equipment for the 9th Grade Physics program and a set of iPads for AP Chemistry.

Technology needs for 2018-2019 and beyond are a growing concern; BHS computers are aging, yet every year more teachers are using computers in the classroom. While classroom computers are an acknowledged critical priority, District funding for tech-nology at BHS is defi cient. For 2018-2019, BHSDG has already committed $25,000 for replacement Chromebooks, but more funding is essential to allow ALL students access to the tools and learning opportunities needed for academic success.

BUSINESS PARTNERS + FRIENDS LUNCHEON FUNDRAISERBHS ALUMNUS DAVEED DIGGS (2000)—Grammy award winner for Hamilton, rapper, co-writer/director/actor of Blindspotting—was the 2018 BHSDG guest speaker at our Business Partners + Friends Luncheon fundraiser. A packed house of 120 rapt people at Revival Bar and Kitchen enjoyed stories of Mr. Diggs’s rise from BHS student to international fame. Donations for the event exceeded $50,000, which will fund grants benefi ting students & staff. The luncheon was followed by a special assembly for the entire BHS student body in the Community Theater, where Mr. Diggs reminisced about his time at BHS, answered questions from students and gave thoughtful advice on becoming your own best self. Mr. Diggs also met with a group of CAS students (his former small school) for coffee, cookies, and a private conversation. His generosity of spirit made the entire day a huge success, boosted fundraising signifi cantly, and made the Business Partners + Friends Luncheon a ‘not-to-be-missed’ event.

GROWING STUDENT COMMUNITY: FIRST ANNUAL SPRING CARNIVAL

FOR THE LAST FEW YEARS, student unity has been BHS Director of Student Activities John Villavicencio’s goal as he steadily works to strengthen the BHS community. The 2018 Spring Carnival was envisioned as an end of the year celebration of students’ accom-plishments, a day that unifi ed students of all grades and learning communities - as well as staff - in an afternoon of fun, friendly competition and teamwork.

The $5,650 funding from the BHSDG allowed the BHS spirit to come alive by affording fi eld games, infl atable obstacle courses,

carnival-style games and concessions. The success of the Spring Carnival among the students, staff and administration has started a new BHS tradition where students and staff socialize together outside of the classroom.

Spring carnival participation exceeded all expectations: over 2,700 students, 200+staff, and numerous parent volunteers proved that exciting school activities are a sure way to get BHS buzzing with Jacket pride.

The Carnival demonstrated the potential of students, staff and community partnerships. We had students running a mile to beat teachers, teachers voluntarily getting dunked by students and at least one student who used the carnival as a reason to ask someone out on a date. The event was a success and something we wish to continue for many years. –JOHN VILLAVICENCIO, DIRECTOR OF STUDENT ACTIVITIES

When I went to the Carnival, I was impressed with all the different groups of people and different small schools coming together as one… There aren’t many activities at this school where all the small schools and grades get to come together.-KATELYN, 10TH GRADER
