The!Cruthers!Art!Foundation!!The!Cruthers!Art!Foundation!promotes!and!supports!women’s!art!and!women!artists!nationally,!through!funding!research!projects,!publications,!exhibitions,!symposia!and!events.!It!also!supports!the!Cruthers!Collection!of!Women’s!Art!at!The!University!of!Western!Australia.!!The!CAF!was!established!in!2005!as!a!Prescribed!Private!Fund,!a!legal!structure!created!to!encourage!private!philanthropy!by!allowing!families!to!raise!money!from!family!members!and!disperse!it!to!the!activities!of!their!choice.!The!CAF’s!initial!trustees!were!Sir!James!and!Lady!Sheila!Cruthers,!their!son!John!and!Ivan!Hoffman.!It!was!established!concurrently!with!negotiations!with!The!University!of!Western!Australia!to!donate!the!Cruthers!Collection!of!Women’s!Art!to!the!University.!The!CAF!was!a!coFsignatory!of!the!Deed!of!Gift!signed!by!the!Cruthers!family!and!the!University!on!30!June!2007.!!The!CAF!provides!an!annual!grant!to!the!University!for!the!maintenance!and!upkeep!of!the!CCWA,!which!is!matched!by!the!University,!and!for!art!acquisitions!and!a!range!of!other!activities.!It!has!also!provided!larger!grants!for!specific!activities!around!the!CCWA,!for!example!events!to!launch!the!CCWA!in!October!2012.!These!included!the!exhibition!Look.'Look'Again,!the!collection!publication!Into'the'Light!and!a!two!day!symposium!on!women’s!art,!Are'We'There'Yet?'!In!2011!the!CAF!transitioned!from!a!Prescribed!Private!Fund!to!a!new!structure!established!by!the!federal!government,!a!Private!Ancillary!Fund.!In!2014!it!appointed!a!corporate!trustee,!Cruthers!Art!Foundation!Pty!Ltd.!Also!in!2014!the!CAF!funded!its!first!external!projects!as!part!of!its!national!research!and!advocacy!role.!The'CoUNTess'Report!is!a!statistical!gender!equality!project!within!the!visual!art!sector!managed!by!artist!Elvis!Richardson!and!launched!in!March!2016.!Filling'the'Gap!is!a!national!art!historical!survey!of!women!artists!1870–1960,!managed!by!art!historian!Juliette!Peers.!!In!2017!the!CAF!will!transition!to!a!new!organisation,!a!Public!Company!Limited!by!Guarantee,!which!will!allow!it!to!support!a!broader!range!of!activities!and!raise!funds!publicly.!!

The!Cruthers!Collection!of!Women’s!Art!!The!Cruthers!Collection!of!Women’s!Art!is!Australia’s!largest!specialist!collection!of!women’s!art.!!The!Cruthers!Collection!of!Women's!Art!(CCWA)!is!founded!upon!a!substantial!gift!made!by!Sir!James!and!Lady!Sheila!Cruthers!to!The!University!of!Western!Australia!in!2007.!Lady!Sheila!Cruthers!and!her!son!John!began!building!a!collection!of!women’s!art!in!1974,!focusing!on!portraiture!and!selfFportraiture!and!as!well!as!key!areas!such!as!modernism,!postFmodernism,!feminism!and!abstraction.!!Decades!of!passionate!advocacy!and!support!for!the!art!of!Australian!women!have!resulted!in!a!diverse,!eclectic!and!distinct!collection!and!a!significant!contribution!to!the!history!of!Australian!art.!The!CCWA!includes!works!from!the!1890s!to!present!day!in!a!variety!of!media.!It!features!wellFknown!historical!figures!and!prominent!contemporary!artists!as!well!as!a!host!of!significant,!yet!underFrecognised!practices.!!The!CCWA!continues!to!expand!through!focused!acquisition!and!now!numbers!about!600!artworks.!It!aims!to!contribute!to!and!challenge!dialogues!about!Australian!women’s!art!through!exhibition,!teaching,!research!and!publication.!!

Report!from!the!Chairperson!!

In!November!2014!four!new!members!were!appointed!to!the!CAF!board!–!Basil!Conti!(Responsible!Person),!Helen!Cook,!Gary!Dufour!and!Helen!Turner.!They!joined!continuing!board!members!John!Cruthers!and!Sue!Cruthers,!and!brought!an!unparalleled!range!of!experience!to!the!board.!The!board!quickly!grasped!the!challenge!to!review!the!CAF’s!aims,!objectives!and!operations,!making!the!2015F16!an!exhilarating!year!of!consolidation!and!expansion.!!

The!most!significant!events!for!the!CAF!over!the!year!were!–!

1. The!completion!and!launch!of!our!first!research!project,!The'CoUNTess'Report,!a!data!counting!exercise!analysing!the!representation!of!women!in!the!ten!main!sectors!of!the!Australian!contemporary!art!sector.!Conducted!by!artist!Elvis!Richardson,!it!built!on!work!done!on!her!CoUNTess!blog!since!2008,!and!was!auspiced!by!the!National!Association!of!Visual!Artists.!It!received!extensive!media!coverage!on!its!launch!in!March!2016!and!is!still!generating!discussion!and!activities!in!the!sector.!

2. The!commencement!of!our!second!research!project,!Filling'the'Gap'Stage'1,!collecting!information!about!neglected!women!artists!in!NSW!1870F1960.!This!year!long!project!is!being!run!by!art!historian!Dr!Juliette!Peers!and!auspiced!by!Museums!&!Galleries!NSW.!

3. The!preparation!of!a!detailed!Strategy!document!for!the!CAF!with!forward!projections!until!2020,!and!a!budget!for!the!same!period.!

4. The!engagement!of!a!financial!planner!(Sharon!Cork,!One!Energy!Financial!Planning!Services)!to!professionally!manage!the!CAF’s!funds!to!help!achieve!our!target!income.!

5. The!first!formal!meeting!between!the!CAF!board!and!the!University!of!WA!to!discuss!the!Cruthers!Collection!of!Women’s!Art!and!the!long!term!plans!both!parties!have!for!it.!

6. The!build!and!launch!of!a!website!for!the!CAF!and!the!decision!to!launch!a!blog!and!investigate!other!social!media!possibilities.!

7. The!decision!to!transition!the!CAF!from!a!Public!Ancillary!Fund!to!a!Public!Company!Limited!by!Guarantee,!the!usual!entity!used!for!cultural!organisations/charities.!This!will!enable!us!to!raise!funds!from!the!public!and!broaden!our!range!of!activities!nationally.!We!hope!to!launch!the!new!organisation!in!midF2017.!

In!June!2016!Sue!Cruthers!retired!from!the!CAF!board!after!serving!on!it!since!the!retirement!of!Lady!Sheila!Cruthers!in!2008.!She!bought!enthusiasm!and!good!judgment!in!equal!measure!to!the!board,!and!will!remain!involved!as!emeritus!director.!Thank!you,!Sue,!you’ve!done!the!family!proud.!

The!year’s!sad!news!was!the!passing!in!October!2015!of!the!founder!of!the!Cruthers!Art!Foundation,!Sir!James!Cruthers.!While!Lady!Sheila!had!the!vision!of!a!collection!of!Australian!women’s!art,!it!was!my!father!who!made!it!possible,!and!whose!long!term!vision!included!the!gifting!of!the!CCWA!to!UWA!and!the!establishment!of!the!CAF.!I!know!he!would!be!proud!of!how!the!CAF!is!moving!forward!to!support!not!only!the!CCWA,!but!women’s!art!and!women!artists!nationally.!

I’d!like!to!thank!the!board!for!all!their!work.!Because!of!it!the!CAF!can!move!forward!with!clear!and!achievable!ambitions!for!how!it!can!promote!Australia’s!women!artists!and!help!improve!their!lot.!

Board!members!John!Cruthers!(Chair)!!2014!–!present!(theeFyear!term)!John!Cruthers!is!a!SydneyFbased!art!curator,!consultant,!writer!and!collector.!Since!1974!he!worked!with!his!parents!to!assemble!the!Cruthers!Collection!of!Women’s!Art,!which!was!gifted!to!The!University!of!Western!Australia!in!2007.!He!is!curatorial!adviser!to!the!CCWA!and!a!member!of!the!UWA!Cultural!Collections!Board.!!Susan!Cruthers!(Emeritus!Director)!2014!–!2016!!Daughter!of!Sir!James!and!Lady!Sheila!Cruthers,!Sue!studied!medicine!at!UWA!and!practised!in!the!public!health!system!in!Perth!for!28!years.!She!has!enjoyed!participating!in!sports!including!cricket,!swimming,!soccer!and!long!distance!running.!Sue’s!career!in!medicine!sparked!an!ongoing!interest!in!policy,!treatment!and!research!in!the!area!of!mental!health.!She!and!her!brother!John!are!continuing!the!work!of!their!mother!and!father!–!the!support!of!women’s!art!and!women!artists!through!the!CAF.!!Basil!Conti!(Responsible!Person)!!2014!–!present!(theeFyear!term)!Basil!Conti!is!a!Fellow!of!The!Institute!of!Chartered!Accountants!of!Australia!and!New!Zealand,!a!Fellow!of!the!Governance!Institute!of!Australia!and!a!Chartered!Tax!Advisor.!He!has!been!a!partner/director!in!the!firm!Harden!East!&!Conti!Pty!Ltd!since!1978.!He!is!experienced!in!the!areas!of!corporate!services,!management!accounting,!taxation!and!consulting!to!small!and!large!businesses.!!Helen!Cook!!2014!–!present!(theeFyear!term)!Helen!Cook!expanded!her!nonFexecutive!director!roles!after!transitioning!from!National!Partner!for!KPMG’s!Energy!and!Natural!Resources!Group!in!2014.!She!is!Deputy!Chair!Fremantle!Ports!and!holds!nonFexecutive!directorships!at!RAC!Holdings!Pty!Ltd!and!RAC!Finance!Ltd,!the!Minerals!Research!Institute!of!WA!and!the!Chamber!of!Arts!&!Culture!WA.!Helen!has!15!years’!experience!in!arts!governance.!She!is!a!member!of!the!Major!Performing!Arts!Panel!of!the!Australia!Council,!past!Chair!of!the!Art!Gallery!of!Western!Australia!and!past!director!Perth!Theatre!Trust.!!Gary!Dufour!!2014!–!present!(three!year!term)!Gary!Dufour!is!an!Adjunct!Associate!Professor!at!The!University!of!Western!Australia!where!he!teaches!the!history!of!20th!and!21st!art!in!America.!A!member!of!the!UWA!Cultural!Collections!Board,!Gary!was!the!Chief!Curator!and!Deputy!Director!of!the!Art!Gallery!of!Western!Australia!for!two!decades.!A!specialist!in!international!contemporary!art,!he!publishes!and!lectures!widely,!and!is!recognised!as!a!leading!authority!on!artists!Jeff!Wall!and!Howard!Taylor.!!Helen!Turner!!2014!–!present!(theeFyear!term)!Helen!Turner!is!the!founder!and!director!of!Turner!Galleries,!established!in!1999.!Turner!Galleries!is!a!leading!contemporary!fine!art!space!in!Perth,!Western!Australia.!Helen!is!also!the!creator!of!Art!Angels,!an!innovative,!residency!program!supporting!midFcareer!and!emerging!artists.!!

Activities!of!the!Cruthers!Art!Foundation,!July!2015!–!June!2016!!

The!board!of!the!Cruthers!Art!Foundation!met!three!times,!on!29!September!2015,!18!February!2016!and!14!June!2016.!!Board!members!also!attended!numerous!other!meetings!both!formal!and!informal!through!the!year.!

Strategic!priorities!to!support!the!Cruthers!Collection!of!Women’s!Art!at!The!University!of!Western!Australia!and!to!promote!women’s!art!and!women!artists!have!been!achieved!in!a!variety!of!ways.!

John!Cruthers!and!Gary!Dufour!attended!meetings!of!the!University!Cultural!Collections!Board!and!advocated!for!the!appropriate!storage,!maintenance!and!display!of!the!CCWA!at!UWA.!They!liaised!with!curator!Gemma!Weston!to!propose!and!hold!exhibitions!using!the!works,!and!to!loan!works!to!other!institutions!and!galleries.!Several!works!were!lent!during!the!year!to!institutions!including!the!Art!Gallery!of!NSW,!National!Gallery!of!Victoria,!Art!Gallery!of!South!Australia!and!Heide!Museum!of!Modern!Art.!John!and!Gary!also!sat!on!the!advisory!committee!of!the!CCWA!and!attended!its!quarterly!meetings,!which!reviewed!CCWA!operations!and!assisted!in!planning!its!future!activities.!

The!board’s!appointed!financial!advisor,!Sharon!Cork,!reported!regularly!to!board!meetings;!she!has!achieved!steady!results!in!a!volatile!financial!environment.!

The!CAF,!as!a!Public!Ancillary!Fund,!is!required!to!disburse!5%!of!its!capital!in!grants!and!donations!each!year.!In!the!2015–16!financial!year,!along!with!its!ongoing!support!of!the!CCWA!at!UWA!($11,000),!the!CAF!supported!two!research!projects,!Elvis!Richardson’s!The'CoUNTess'Report!($20,000)!and!Juliette!Peers’!Filling'the'Gap!($5,000!granted!in!June!2016).!

THE!COUNTESS!REPORT:!In!2014!the!Cruthers!Art!Foundation!commissioned!a!data!collection!program!gathering!statistics!about!the!representation!of!women!in!the!10!main!sectors!of!the!Australian!contemporary!art!industry!in!2015.!The!program!was!managed!by!artist!Elvis!Richardson!who,!through!her!blog!CoUNTess:!women!count!in!the!artworld,!has!been!involved!in!gender!equality!research!since!2008.!The!project!partner!was!the!National!Association!of!Visual!Artists,!Sydney.!The!completed!The!Countess!Report!was!released!on!International!Women’s!Day,!8!March!2016!and!achieved!significant!media!coverage.!

The!CAF!introduced!a!Museum!Loans!program!as!a!key!educational!and!awarenessFbuilding!strategy.!!Major!works!such!as!Freda!Robertshaw’s!Standing'nude!are!attentionFgetting;!it!has!been!on!loan!to!the!Art!Gallery!of!NSW!since!early!2015,!along!with!Nora!Heysen’s!Ruth'on'a'blue'background.!Such!loans!are!appreciated!by!recipient!institutions!and!increase!the!national!exposure!of!the!CCWA.!

Over!the!next!twelve!months,!the!Cruthers!Art!Foundation!proposes!to!change!its!structure.!Plans!are!underway!to!transition!to!a!Public!Company!Limited!by!Guarantee!(PCLG).!This!will!free!it!from!the!narrow!parameters!of!a!PAF!and!enable!it!to!seek!donations!from!the!public!and!make!direct!grants!to!further!the!aims!of!supporting!women’s!art!and!women!artists.!The!new!entity!will!have!a!different!name,!and!the!Cruthers!family!intends!to!continue!to!endow!and!support!it.!
