Introduction

San Diego City College offers tutoring resources to students outside of class for their City College or ECC courses at the Tutorial/Learning Center (TLC), the English Center, and the Math Center.

The Tutorial/Learning Center (TLC) helps City College students achieve their academic goals by providing a place to study, do homework, receive academic assistance and support, meet with study groups, and attend study skills workshops.

The English Center provides a community-based learning environment to help City College students become more effective, confident, and independent readers, writers, and critical thinkers. In support of the mission, the English Center offers assistance for all disciplines and is dedicated to providing innovation in tutoring strategies, pedagogy, and quality training in all areas of tutoring, as well as ongoing collaboration with faculty, staff, administration, and other tutorial/learning centers.

The Math Center provides a flexible learning-centered environment in which students are able to complete their college math requirements. The Math Center strives to provide resources in an environment that is conducive for learning, where students can complete a Math Center course, receive general math tutoring, take a make-up test, study and complete homework assignments.

This report is developed to serve multiple purposes at City College: (1) for accreditation in response to the Library and Learning Resources Support of Accreditation Standard IIB, (2) for the tutorial center administrators to determine best practices and to inform planning, and 3) for City College and the District to decide how services are rendered in the future.

The key questions that this report will address are:• What proportion of City College students participate in tutoring? • What is the demographic profile of students who participate in tutoring? • How well do tutoring students perform in their courses relative to students who do not receive tutoring?• Are students who participate in tutoring more likely to persist from term to term (fall to spring) compared to students who do not receive tutoring?

Methodology

The report examines student characteristics, enrollment, retention, success, and persistence for tutoring students enrolled at City College over the past five years. Students who visited one of the three tutoring centers are compared to those who did not receive tutoring services to highlight differences in enrollment characteristics and student outcomes between those students who received tutoring compared to those students who did not utilize the tutoring center.
