Welcome to another year at Lancaster! Hard to believe we are in 2020 already!

2019 was an eventful year for us, starting a new sale date in the same week as the SA Beef Field days, which we thought worked really well. We held our first Open Day in October, Which we hope will become an annual event.

This year we were fortunate to have really fantastic guest speakers in Hayley Robinson from MLA and Wade Shafer and Luke Bowman from American Simmental. Hayley talked about understanding the MSA grading system and how to get the best value from it. Wade and Luke discussed indexes and how we all create our own, by selecting animals based on our own criteria.

They then went on to elaborate on the API (All Purpose Index) and how it is a fantastic tool in any market, to select cattle based on economically relevant traits. It was great to hear from them and also to relax and catch up with clients and industry colleagues.

This year’s line up of bulls is going to impress, with representation from established sires such as Cowboy Cut, Beacon and our own LCS High Profile, as well as some great SimAngus bulls out of EF Commando and Wattletop Franklin. 2019 OPEN DAY

2019 SA JUNIOR HEIFER EXPO AND ROYAL ADELAIDE SHOW

This year we had our first Open Day, in October, which we are hoping to make an annual event. We’re not sure if it was good management or good luck, but we were thrilled to score a trio of very knowledgeable guest speakers, who all brought something really special to the day. First up was Hayley Robinson, MSA Operations Manager for MLA. Hayley explained how the MSA grading system works and how working towards MSA graded cattle can improve profits, something we all want to know more about! After lunch we heard from Wade Shafer and Luke Bowman, from the American Simmental Association. Wade and Luke gave a very informative talk, about indexes and how they can help to improve your herd and add profit. They started by explaining how indexes work, with the simple concept, that an index is basically using selection criteria to meet needs, something we all do anyway. They then went on to describe the API (All Purpose Index), produced by the American Simmental Association, to help commercial breeders drive profit across all markets.Between absorbing all the great information, gobbling a feast with beautiful spit roast meats and catching up with clients, friends and industry colleagues, it was a great day and we can’t wait for the next one!Thanks to everyone who came along and made it so great!

Harry and Lizzy once again participated in the SA Junior Heifer Expo this year. It is such a fantastic program, offering so many learning opportunities to youth interested in our industry. Both Harry and Lizzy get so much from the program, attending lectures, learning livestock handling skills and making what we suspect will be lifelong friendships!Harry also took his steer to the Royal Adelaide show this year, his first time presenting in the show ring (it may be fair to say there were some pretty proud parents and grandparents!).

He was thrilled when his steer won his class on hoof and was part of the winning team of Simmental Steers who claimed the Thomas Foods International prize for Led Steer Teams Championship, alongside two impressive steers presented by Glental Partnership and Woonallee Simmentals.

DNA TESTING – WHAT’S IN IT FOR THE CATTLE BUYERS?

Each DNA test is equivalent to the following progeny test samples:

This means that with a simple DNA sample being tested, we can gather far more accurate trait information. Lancaster took the initiative last year of working towards whole herd testing. Every female in the herd has now been tested, as well as every sale bull.

We want to provide the best product for our clients, so:• Every sale bull is sold DNA tested and with genomically enhanced EPD’s• This testing includes parent verification to both sire and dam• Testing also includes verification for coat colour • Sale bulls are also tested to confirm poll status• Every Sire and Dam of sale bulls have been DNA tested and have genomically enhanced EPD’s.

Gathering massive numbers of genotypes, such as entire cow herds, will significantly improve genomic predictions and therefore, the rate of genetic progress.

EDUCATED CATTLEThe Lancaster herd has been educated with kelpie cattle dogs. Since implementing this management tool several years ago, we have experienced many benefits. Benefits include less stress on both cattle and the operators and more co-operative cattle which adjust easily to new situations.

BULL GUARANTEELancaster Simmental guarantees to bull purchasers at the 2020 sale, the structural soundness and fertility of all the bulls sold. The entry of every bull constitutes a guarantee by the vendor that if a bull should prove infertile or breaks down due to reasons other than injury, misadventure or negligence, Lancaster will provide you with a satisfactory replacement if available, or issue you with a credit equal to the purchase price minus salvage value. This credit may be used to purchase any animal in future Lancaster sales Any request for replacement/ credit must be lodged within 12 months of purchase. A veterinary certificate must be produced by the purchaser. Lancaster Simmental recommend that all cattle are insured at the time of purchase.

CATTLE TRANSPORTLancaster Simmental will provide transport for bulls from Menalpyn to within a 200km radius, free of charge.

• Lancaster Simmental will provide free transport for bulls from Menalpyn to Hamilton(VIC), Albury-Wodonga, Dubbo (NSW) and Roma(QLD). Transport from these points is the responsibility of the buyer

FERTILITYAll sale bulls have been checked and semen tested for motility (speed), progressive motility (% of semen moving forward), morphology (abnormalities) and concentration, by Ian Moreland of StudCare Genetics. Ian also palpated and measured the testicles and carried out a visual examination of the penis.• All bulls were tested free of pestivirus.• All sale bulls had boosters for 7in1, Pestiguard and Vibrovax

- in January 2020. The National Johne’s Program ceased to exist as of 01/11/2016, at which stage Lancaster Simmentals was MN3 accredited. Lancaster now has the highest possible accreditation with the new assurance program; Johne’s Beef Assurance Score (J-BAS) with a score of 8. We will continue to maintain testing and record keeping in line with MN3 accreditation standards.

VISITOR SAFETYPlease note that all visitors enter pens at their own risk. Children under 16 should not enter the sale pens. If you choose to enter the pens,take note of your surrounds and ensure your safety at all times. Please do not crowd animals. Animals being offered for sale are known to be of quiet temperament under normal conditions, but sale day is not considered ‘normal conditions’. BRINGING YOUR NEW BULL HOMEBuying a new bull is a significant investment. The greatest risk to this investment is in the first six months. Lancaster Simmental recommends you insure your new bull for six months from the fall of hammer; there are also many sensible management precautions you can take to reduce the risk. Bulls of all breeds and temperaments can become upset and excited in the sale and delivery process1. They are subjected to strange yards, loss of their mates, trucking, different handling methods, new paddocks, different water and feed. When your new bull arrives home, unload him into your stockyards, ideally with a small group of cows or steers. Provide him with hay and water, and leave him alone to settle down until the next morning. Never unload your bull directly into a paddock; while unsettled from the journey, he may attempt to get out, and injure himself in the process. A young bull should be mated with a herd as a single sire, or with young bulls his own age. An older bull may injure him, or may not let him near the cows. If you plan to use a number of young bulls for a multiple mating, it is sensible to run them together for a few weeks before joining starts. This will allow them to sort out their pecking order and concentrate on their work later on. During mating, inspect your bulls regularly and closely. Check for any lameness, and for swelling or injuries around the sheath. If an injury is noticed early, and treated quickly by a qualified veterinarian, your bull has a good chance of a complete recovery. Note that it is important to replace any suspect bull immediately, to avoid low calving percentages and permanent damage to the injured bull. Lancaster bulls are fully vaccinated with Vibrovax, Pestiguard and 7 in 1 and treated to eliminate internal and external parasites. QUICK REFERENCE TO ASA EPD’S AND $ INDEXES

Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs): EPDs are the most accurate and effective tool available for comparing genetic levels. In using EPDs, the difference between two sires’ EPDs represents the unit difference expected in the performance of their progeny. For example, if sires A and B have EPDs of +10 and –5, a 15-unit difference would be expected in their progeny (moving from -5 to +10 yields 15 units). Key to using EPDs is knowing what units they are expressed in. For example, if the above case referred to weaning weight EPDs, A would be expected to sire 15-pounds more weaning weight than B. If calving ease were the trait, A would be expected to sire 15-percent more unassisted births in first-calf heifers; in other words, if B sired 30 assists in a group of 100 heifers, we’d expect A to require 15 assists. A percentile-ranking chart is required to determine where a bull’s EPDs rank him relative to other bulls in the breed. Stayability (STAY): Percent of daughters remaining in the cowherd at 6 years of age.

Terminal Index (TI): Dollars per cow exposed under a terminal-sire scenario. (See below for more details.)

Weaning Weight (WW): Pounds of weaning weight.

Yearling Weight (YW): Pounds of yearling weight.

Yield Grade (YG): Yield grade score.

$ Indexes: Though EPDs allow for the comparison of genetic levels for many economically important traits, they only provide a piece of the economic puzzle. That’s where $ indexes come in. Through well conceived, rigorous mathematical computation, $ indexes blend EPDs and economics to estimate an animal’s overall impact on your bottom line. The same technology that led to the dramatic progress in swine, poultry and dairy genetics over the last several decades was used to develop the following $ indexes:

All-Purpose Index (API): Evaluates sires for use on the entire cow herd (bred to both Angus first-calf heifers and mature cows) with the portion of their daughters required to maintain herd size retained and the remaining heifers and steers put on feed and sold grade and yield.

Terminal Index (TI): Evaluates sire for use on mature Angus cows with all offspring put on feed and sold grade and yield.

Using API and TI: First, determine which index to use; if you’re keeping replacements use API, if not, TI. Then, just as with EPDs, zero in on the unit difference between bulls. (As described above, index units are in dollars per cow exposed.) The difference can be used to determine how much a bull is worth compared to another. Or, put another way, how much you can pay for one bull compared to another. For example, when buying an all-purpose-type sire, you can quickly figure a bull scoring +100 for API is worth an extra $6,000 over a +50 bull if both are exposed to 30 cows over 4 years ($50 diff. x 30 hd. x 4 yr. = $6,000). A percentile-ranking chart is required to determine where a bull’s index value ranks him relative to other bulls in the breed. The Lancaster Simmental Sale BellWe are honoured each year to open our bull selling season by the ringing of the Lancaster Bell. With this ceremonial gesture we pass the baton to the auctioneers and welcome you our customer to our sale.Each year the purchaser of the top priced bull has their name engraved on the bell. This tradition hopes to give historical recognition and respect to those who fight it out for the top bull.The 40kg Lancaster Simmental Bell was originally a ship’s bell. Tim’s brother-in-law, Rob McCahey, salvaged it from scrap metal at the Flocast Foundry in Melbourne. The engraving is done freehand by Troy of Burnside Village in Adelaide.
