43 LETTER FROM TYLER

Dear Donors, Families, Friends, Athletes, Partners and Supporters,

This year, after seven years of monumental growth, we wanted to solidify our set of core values. It was an exercise involving our Board of Directors, our Board of Industry, our staff and the input of a few of the athletes hanging around the CR Johnson Healing Center.

It was great to articulate the values we’d already practiced for years. Here they are —

HUMAN CAREEmpowering individuals through life-changing positivity. INTEGRITYOffering transparency in all programs, operations, partnerships and fun. COMMUNITYCommitting to an inclusive group of individuals and mentors. PASSIONCreating rewarding outcomes through empathy and leadership. KAIZENDedicated to constantly improving through innovation.

As you turn the pages of this report, I hope you witness these five values shining throughout. I want you to feel included in these values. Without you, none of these accomplishments could happen.

I’m excited for you to see the way the Military to the Mountains Program has expanded. I’m excited for you to see the Craig Empowerment addition to the CR Johnson Healing Center. We’re really proud of the eight adaptive camps providing unforgettable experiences, spanning from snow to rocks, from river to sea.

At the beginning of 2016 we reached a milestone. We helped our 100th athlete with grant funding, then gave grants to 25 more. At the rate that we’re broadening the reach of our positivity, it won’t take seven years to reach our 200th athlete – a number I do not want to see but support when it happens.

I hope you delve into every page and photo in this report reflecting 2016. Let these pages inspire you to keep making a difference in 2017. See where the core values of the High Fives Foundation fit into your own core values.

I’ll leave you with one word – Onward!

EMPOWERMENTPROGRAMThe Empowerment Program provides resources and inspiration to those who suffer a life-altering injury. Life-altering injuries include spinal cord injuries, traumatic brain injuries, amputations or other mobility-limiting injuries that occurred in an athlete’s lifetime. The resources and inspiration we provide come in the form of board-approved grant funding paid to service providers in nine funding categories – Living expenses, insurance, health, programs, travel, High Fives Healing Network, adaptive equipment, winter equipment and “stoke” (positive energy, outlook, attitude).

8 2016 HIGH FIVES FOUNDATION ANNUAL REPORT

The CR Johnson Healing Center is a 2,800 sq/ft training facility providing resources for athletes recovering from life-altering injuries and Truckee-Tahoe community members.

HISTORYOn August 10th, 2011, the  High Fives Non-Profit Foundation  opened the CR Johnson Healing Center as a program service to commemorate the professional skier and beloved Truckee resident, CR Johnson. The Healing Center provides a space in which High Fives Athletes and community members can continue to work toward their goals in a private, “no questions asked” facility. Located at 10775 Pioneer Trail – Suite 108, Truckee, CA 96161.

When you love mountain action sports but you sustain a life-altering injury that means you may never get back to doing what you love on the mountain again, the question becomes. What can you do to return to the active lifestyle that you love?

You go to  the High Fives Foundation  in Truckee, California  to get stronger in the  Craig Empowerment Center – an 800-square foot addition to the CR Johnson Healing Center. The Craig Empowerment Center is supported by Craig Hospital in Denver, a world-renowned, rehabilitation hospital that specializes in the care of people who have sustained a spinal cord and/or a brain injury.

The CR Johnson Healing Center is a training facility providing resources for athletes in recovery from life-altering and sport related injuries.  The Healing Center attracts over 3,700 visits a year from community members and High Fives Athletes.  The addition of the Craig Empowerment Center is particularly important as it now gives athletes unique access to important strength-training technologies such as the FES Bike, Freemotion EXT Dual Cable and Parallel Bars and gives them more space for important workouts. In addition, therapists from Craig will work with therapists at the Center to ensure a consistent therapy experience.

Military to the Mountains was created following the success achieved by veteran Marine

Corporal Jacob Schick while skiing at Squaw Valley During the 2014-2015 Winter season.

Last year, the program grew to include 10 injured US Military Veterans.

Working directly with Dallas-based Adaptive Training Foundation, injured Veterans

undergo intensive training prior to visiting Squaw Valley. Once they arrive in the

mountains, they receive adaptive ski lessons with Achieve Tahoe.

In 2017, the Military to the Mountains program will continue this process for 22 other

injured military veterans.

This year’s program begins in January 2017 with a 9-week training period in Dallas, TX

& Reno, NV. In April, 22 US Veteran athletes (15 from Dallas, Tx & 7 From Reno, NV) will

travel to Reno on fl ights hosted by American Airlines. The athletes stay and ski / ride at

Squaw Valley with Achieve Tahoe’s adaptive ski program.

STEVE WALLACEPROGRAM SERVICES MANAGER

Empowerment Fund

The High Fives Foundation is made up of an inspiring group of hard-working individuals from across North America. As the first Athlete of the organization, suffering a spinal cord injury in a 2008 ski accident, I can speak directly

to the long hours and dedication it takes to come back from a traumatic injury. Now acting as the organization’s Program Services Manager, it is truly inspiring to watch each of the Foundation’s 125

Athletes not only putting their respective injures behind them to become community role models, but doing it with the smile and positive attitude that it takes to wave the High Fives Flag.

BECCA LEFANOWICZOPERATIONS & NETWORK MARKETING MANAGER Giving Tuesday + Social Media

Many people believe fundraising drives impact, but do not realize that  impact also drives fundraising. I saw this first hand with our #GivingTuesday campaign to raise money for ADA Power Doors in the CR Johnson Healing Center. This past #GivingTuesday (global day of giving fueled by the power of social media and collaboration) I built a narrative and got creative. I researched how many community members and #HighFivesAthletes use the center each day. Then, I created videos to show how each of them uniquely opened the heavy door. Next, I shared these videos on our social channels and created an email blast presenting them with what their donations can achieve (an automatic door). By tieing this outcome to fundraising dollars we ended up raising 168% of our goal. This campaign proved that more people are willing to donate and continue donating if they clearly understand the impact of their gift. Tieing fundraising dollars to impact was extremely successful to raise more money for our mission! Stay tuned for more impact driven fundraising successes.

FAT Ski A Thon

You care. Want to know how I know? I see it at High Fives events. Last year we made a goal of raising $150,000 in just one day at the FAT Ski-a-Thon in Vermont. And we did it! Only because we have a community like the

one that surrounds High Fives. $150,000 for High Fives Athletes means roughly 30 different grants (our average grants are around $5,000).

Tahoe is my home now, but I love returning to Vermont. Vermont is the place where I fell in love with skiing, rehabilitation and with High Fives. Now I get to go back every year to put on the most

successful event in the history of the Foundation, The FAT Ski-a-Thon, well... it’s something special. People travel near and far to spend the day spinning laps and having

fun in the name of philanthropy, and I am so lucky to be a part of it.

JACK POWELLCR JOHNSON HEALING CENTER HEAD TRAINER

Craig Empowerment Center

The Craig Empowerment Center is a major boost to the CR Johnson Healing Center in more ways than one. Not only does it provide new equipment and more space to use, the addition itself is motivating. Athletes

come to a facility that has grown because of the work they have put in. For our athletes to see growth along with their own, I can’t think of a better motivation tool. It has taken our Healing Center to another

level. I am stoked when people stop to see it. Their reactions are inspiring. It makes me stop to realize, I get to work there!

NICO NORDINOFFICE & DATA COORDINATOR Measuring Positivity

Metrics help us express what is happening within the organization in a meaningful way. They help others understand where we have been, where we are at and it gives a good look at where we are heading. Calculating metrics often helps tell us where we are doing well and areas where we might need some work or that need to be highlighted more. Keeping track of metrics is not only crucial for High Fives internally, but also, the grants that we apply for and to show others the impact we are making in a numerical sense. Having up to date metrics makes it simple for our grant writers to pull information for each application and it also helps us answer a variety of questions that donors or future donors may have about the organization. For a good numerical example of our impact, check out the Vital Stats in this annual report!

TESS VERTINGRANT WRITER BASICS presentations

This year, the High Fives Foundation B.A.S.I.C.S initiative, “Five Criti-cal Mistakes,” has had an enormous impact on students and adults alike. Thanks to the participation of High Fives Athletes as well as members of the Board of Industry, we were able to present in new mountain communities that we had never been to before.

Since October, the High Fives Foundation has put on over 40 B.A.S.I.C.S presentations in five different states throughout the country. The response has been overwhelmingly positive and has resulted in the B.A.S.I.C.S program recently reaching an unprecedented number of views, well exceeding 200,000. We look forward to continuing to grow these numbers and spread the important message of “Five Critical Mistakes”.

BRIAN MERCEDES IN HIS WORDS“Chive Charities champions the underdogs - the underserved causes that are defying the odds. A large part of what we do is centered around increasing the quality of life for injured or disabled veterans. When we heard about the incredible work the High Fives Foundation was doing with their Military to the Mountains program, we knew we needed to get involved. As a new program, M2M was defying the odds and showing real results. COMMUNITY 5 AWARDSThe High Fives Foundation emphasizes a strong sense of community in all of its program services. Executive Director, Roy Tuscany has witnessed firsthand how important a community can be in the recovery process from a life-altering injury.

From his recovery, he created the High Fives Foundation for the national mountain action sports community to come together as a tightknit collective of families, businesses and philanthropically minded residents.

To recognize this, we have created The Community Five Awards hosted annually at our formal Siver Tie Gala in Reno, Nevada. This award recognizes five distinguished members of the High Fives community for their positive achievements and their efforts to improve the overall wellbeing of everyone around them. The awards are categorized for past, present, and future service to the mission of the organization.

Jesse MurphyJesse was a major influence in Roy Tuscany’s development before and after college back in Vermont. He taught Roy many lessons that transcended the ski hill to all areas of life. After Roy’s accident, Jesse stepped up to become a major focal point of support in the Vermont area, raising considerable funds for Roy’s recovery. Ever since the establishment of the High Fives, Jesse has continued to catalyze extraordinary fundraising efforts from within New England and throughout the ski industry. He serves as High Fives Director of Development.

Alec TuscanyAlec is Roy’s father. He taught Roy from the start that hardworking people are successful. That trait has rippled into the success of this non-profit and, in some way, all of the people who have been helped. Alec is honored with a Community Five Award for always exemplifying a strong work ethic, honesty, and generosity.

Tyler LightcapRoy came to Tyler with $500 during the establishment of the High Fives Foundation. Tyler didn’t scoff, but instead treated Roy like it was $5 million. Since that point, he was a financial advisor and board member for the organization until 2015 when Tyler stepped up as the chair of the board. Tyler’s eloquence and professionalism is the exact leadership necessary to carry the very distinguished and progressive board. He helped them envision and execute astonishing feats, with more on the horizon.

Squaw Valley | Alpine In 2015, Squaw Valley | Alpine Meadows agreed to allow High Fives to pilot the Military to the Mountains program, a program that brings injured US Veterans skiing. With the proven success of the program, the resort established a Military Season Pass Program. It allows active duty military to get a full season pass for $25. All proceeds completely sustain the Military to the Mountains program of the High Fives Foundation.

The Abraham Family In 2015, Jason Abraham suffered a serious spinal cord injury, changing his life forever. His family accepted the injury with poise and grace. Jason’s wife Kate and his son Ebbett embody the core value of family through their love. They express the power of positivity through each other, inspiring others to live with the same strength and love.

QUADRILYZED is the video of Jason’s new version of life as an athlete, as a photographer, and as a father.

On one of the best powder days of 2015, Jason Abraham, the beloved Tahoe skier and photographer was skiing at Squaw Valley capturing photos of a skilled crew in notorious steeps. Af-ter the session, he decided he’d take a free ski run down Main Chute in the Pal-isades. After dropping into the line he’d scored hundreds of times, Jason picked up speed and came out of the run fast-er than anticipated. He caught an edge and was flung on his back. The impact resulted in a spinal cord injury causing paralysis from the shoulders down and making him a #HighFivesAthlete -- part of the same population he’d helped photograph and promote for years.

Accepted 2016 Film FestivalsSouthern Colorado Film Festival, Oregon Short Film Festival, Awareness Festival, International Family Film Fes-tival, San Jose International Short Film Festival, Maine Outdoor Film Festival, Flagstaff Mountain Film Festical & DC Adventure Film Festival.

In January 2016 Tony Schmiesing became the very first bi-skier to ever take on the 22-foot walls of the X-Games Superpipe in Aspen, Colorado. This was the natural progression after the High Fives Foundation supported his dreams to conquer the wall ride and half-pipe at Squaw Valley | Alpine Meadows and heli skiing in the Alaskan backcountry.

“High Fives has helped me move closer to my goal of endless stoke, dizzying love and continued support,” said Tony.

Tony was awarded an official X-Games Gold Medal at the 2016 Silver Tie Gala in Reno, Nevada.

IN TYLER’S WORDS

Dear High Fives Family, In the last few years, despite massive growth and impact, the High Fives Board of Directors has witnessed the need for our program services vastly outweigh our ability to provide those services.

In this discrepancy, we saw opportunity. We realized the importance of looking beyond our own community and strategizing the ways in which we can expand our network throughout the mountain sports communities we love so much.  Our program services offered through our local CR Johnson Healing Center have continued to grow. We acknowledged this by exploring and executing square footage expansions, new equipment, and a future dormitory facility for visiting athletes. But what if we could replicate this kind of Healing Center in places across the country? Vermont? The Rockies?

Along those same lines, the growing BASICS program has reached a record number of individuals, families, and schools. Through donor insights, we know this educational component of injury awareness has been identified as a top priority.

But there is still more work to do. There are many more mountain communities that could use reinforced safety awareness messaging. There are many more injured athletes to help, too, and with the same dedication and care as we have for our last 125 athletes. As far as we have come as a foundation, we still need help. We are blessed to have the resources and donors we do.

Our accomplishments are a direct reflection to the generosity of the communities we support. A huge thanks and high five to each and every individual, family, and business that has helped us get to this point.

We have made a commitment to continue working tirelessly to fill the demand of both injury awareness and to expand facilities for healing athletes. To accomplish this, we need to dig deep into our centers of influence, share the High Fives story, con-tinue to spread the positivity, and expand our safety net for the mountain sports community from coast to coast.  My warmest regards,

Tyler Lightcap Chairman of the Board

THANK YOU TO ALL OF OUR DONORS
