This year has been another year characterised by further change and I believe positive progress.

What has been particularly pleasing has been the increased level of interest from the clubs in Tennis Auckland affairs. This has been a major highlight perhaps driven by some big challenges, but importantly the clubs recognise their critical role in driving tennis forward as the key stakeholders in our sport.

This perhaps will be an important platform for Tennis Auckland moving forward, where there is lively debate and interest in the major decisions and strategy surrounding tennis in the region and nationally.

In terms of change, the international tournaments were well hosted in a largely completed facility, which only accentuated the challenges of the previous year where staff, volunteers, players, officials and the public came together in what was nothing much more than a construction site. There is still some areas to develop and complete, but we now have a fantastic environment to attract the world’s best players, which in turn draws increasing numbers of passionate tennis fans to support the tournaments.

Many will recall the fiscal challenges presented by our Chairman Alan Chester at the last AGM. On behalf of the clubs, I congratulate the Board and the management of Tennis Auckland on such a swift and effective recovery. This was achieved with little or no pain on the clubs.

The vibrancy of debate in recent months around the plans articulated by Tennis New Zealand has been most encouraging. The clubs have made significant contributions with intelligent and well thought through perspectives. This has facilitated an open and constructive engagement on their plans forward and we all feel we are part of that journey.

Sadly, I note the passing in the last year of two outstanding Past Presidents. Nonie Kiely, was also a Life Member of Tennis Auckland. Nonie was a tireless contributor to tennis over many many years and perhaps was best known for her huge contribution to the tournaments. Jon Olsen was President of Tennis Auckland in 2009/2010 and during his term was well recognised for his powerful contribution challenging many aspects and decisions. It was Jon who described Delegates meetings as ‘humourless’ and was a key influence in moving them to more engaging and constructive meetings today.

Thank you to all those clubs who welcomed me to their various functions or contacted me on various issues. Communication is critical and I received some great feedback and input from the grass roots of our sport. The one key theme I do wish to comment on is that the success of a club is characterised by the quality, depth and energy of its volunteers. This I believe will be further accentuated in coming years as clubs look to deliver broader quality services to their members.

In closing, I would like to thank the Board and the Management team of Tennis Auckland for their commitment and enthusiastic support over the last 12 months. Tennis Auckland is without doubt in a better position today than 12 months ago, and is positioned to move forward positively and constructively in the future.

Representing the clubs within Tennis Auckland has indeed been an honour and I certainly have a greater appreciation of the Auckland clubs and their issues. I welcome the new President to the role and wish them luck for another exciting 12 months.

REPORTS

Page 17: ANNUAL REPORT€¦ · wager well for Auckland being a preferred event on the professional circuit going forward. Completion of stages 2 and 3, which involves improved facilities for

In my report of last year I reported a totally un-satisfactory financial result amongst difficult circumstances of not having a CEO in place for a significant part of the year and the construction taking place around the international tournaments.

Robyn Kiddle was appointed CEO in July2011 and quickly recognised the issues at hand.

The construction was completed prior to the recent tournaments and received accolades from players as to the world class facilities. We believe that this will wager well for Auckland being a preferred event on the professional circuit going forward. Completion of stages 2 and 3, which involves improved facilities for spectators and a sliding roof for centre court, is hoped to be completed for the 2016 international tournaments depending on funding which has been boosted by confirmation of Auckland City Council support.

The result for the year ended 30th April 12 is a net operating profit of $300k (2011- net loss of $337k) which includes depreciation of $ 171k (2011-$198k), resulting in a cash profit of $471 (2011-loss $139k).

This turn around gives us the ability to reduce debt, re-build our finances and to re-invest in the future of Tennis Auckland.

There is still a lot to be accomplished over the next 5 years which is dependent on similar quantum of earnings being achieved. Subject to circumstances beyond our control, the Board believes that the current level of earnings is sustainable.

The Board is now concentrating on the bigger picture, how the sport may look in years to come and how we can position Tennis Auckland accordingly.

During the year 18,000 school children were introduced to tennis in our region through our Grasshoppers programme and a further 12,500 a “taste” of tennis through a modified version of Grasshoppers. The focus now is to convert these introductions into participating in the clubs throughout the region.

The highlight of our High Performance Programme is the endorsement by Tennis NZ of the programme within the national strategy which provides a complete pathway for our players. Our team won the National Teams Event this year. In addition Cameron Norrie, who is a member of the programme, performed extremely well both locally and overseas and increased his international junior ranking to 91 in the world.

Not only is our Grasshopper programme introducing a lot of young people to the game and our Performance programme providing a pathway for our talented players, our ‘radar screen’ is identifying some very exceptionally talented 6-8 year olds.

With the sustainable financial turn-around, and the fundamental drivers of participation and performance of the sport in place, all wagers well for the future of the sport in our region.

I wish to thank President Howard for his involvement and contribution through what has been a year of significant change and the challenges that go with changes.

Similarly, I wish to thank Board members, CEO Robyn Kiddle and her team, sponsors and the many volunteers who are intrinsically so important to our success.

Both international tournaments this year were memorable in many ways – from the outstanding player fields for both events and for the unseasonal weather that affected spectator experience, particularly in the women’s event.

It was a of year firsts – first time the tournaments had been held using the newly completed NGC facilities, first time that SKY was the official broadcaster and the first time that the games started at 1.00pm each day. The players’ feedback about the facilities they can now use at our tournaments was exemplary. They can now enjoy training and preparation areas that are truly world class. Marina Erakovic was quick to point out that she believed the offer in Auckland was as good as that available in far larger tournaments overseas.

ASB Classicfeaturing the KIA Motors Singles and Doubles

Once again we had a world class field for this event that is one of the first events in the WTA calendar. The ranking cut-off for the Main Draw this year was 67 – one of the highest in recent memory. We attracted four outstanding players ranked in the Top 20; Sabine Lisicki, Shuai Peng, Svetlana Kuznetsova and Flavia Pennetta.

Unfortunately an early attraction for the tournament, Venus Williams, withdrew for medical reasons but this didn’t detract from the standard of tennis or the interest in the tournament. Our own Marina Erakovic qualified for the Main Draw in her own right based on her ranking of 61.

A sell -out crowd enjoyed an enthralling match on Centre Court between Marina and Angelique Kerber that went to Kerber 4-6, 6-4, 6-4.

Three set matches were not as abundant this year as previous tournaments but, running true to form, the ASB Classic was not the darling for the seeds with only two – Pennetta and Kuznetsova – making the semi-finals. It was the unseeded Jie Zheng from China who won the Kia Singles Title against Pennetta from Italy who retired in the third set with the score at 2-6, 6-3, 2-0.

In the doubles it was the successful pairing of the third seeds, Andrea Hlavakova and Lucie Hradecka from the Czech Republic, winning the Kia Doubles over Julia Goerges and Flavia Pennetta in a super tiebreak decider 6-7(2), 6-2, 10-7. The lead-up to the final was an ‘all seeds’ affair that made for entertaining viewing.

Unfortunately the weather just didn’t play its part in this year’s tournament – as those trying to have a summer camping holiday would have experienced. Both the Singles and Doubles Finals had to be played indoors at short notice limiting the number of people who could watch the matches. Up to that point we had enjoyed some of the largest crowds seen at the ASB Tennis Arena for some time.

Heineken Openfeaturing the Panasonic Singles and Doubles

Another strong field lined up for the men’s event this year and saw the return of the reigning champion, David Ferrer, hoping for a hat trick of wins.

The main draw final field ranking cut-off was 74 and, for the first time since 2007, we featured two players ranked in the ATP Top Ten – David Ferrer and Nicolas Almagro.

A crowd favourite this year, especially amongst the women, was Fernando Verdasco who advanced to the semi-finals where he went down to the eventual tournament winner, David Ferrer, in two sets 6-3, 6-4.

There was much interest in the young upcoming player, Ryan Harrison from USA, who made it through to the second round before bowing out to the more experienced Philip Kohlschreiber in three sets 4-6, 6-4, 8-3. Another rising talent certainly made his presence felt at ASB Tennis Arena this year. Benoit Paire, from France, ranked 95 at the time, came through the Qualifiers to reach the quarter-finals with only one match going to three sets. In his quarter- final match he faced the experienced Olivier Rochus, from Belgium but it wasn’t all one way traffic. Rochus and Paire were locked in a fierce battle for most of the match but, in the end, it was the dogged determination of Rochus that won out with the scores reflecting the intensity of the match – 6-3, 6-7(5), 7-6(4).

A highlight for the Kiwi dominated crowd was the entertaining tennis from the doubles pairing of Kiwis Dan King-Turner and Michael Venus. Having been granted a wild card entry into the doubles the pair delighted the crowd on the Wednesday night in a truly gladitorial battle with Huey and Lipsky. The scoreline tells the story of a match that kept the stadium full until late into the evening with King-Turner and Venus winning 4-6, 7-5, 10-8. King-Turner and Venus went on to reach the semi finals where they went down to Oliver Marach and Alexander Peya (AUT) 6-2, 6-2.

Although the weather interrupted play in the final, the crowd was treat to an enthralling display of tennis from two experienced and entertaining professionals – Olivier Rochus and David Ferrer, the No. 1 seed for the tournament. Rochus’ road to the final had been dominated by three set matches and tie-break sets whereas Ferrer’s matches were more decisive. Nevertheless the determination of Rochus was inspirational and he fought to the very end. However it was David Ferrer who was the victor on the day winning the final 6-3, 6-4. Auckland has been good to Ferrer, as the defending champion, and Ferrer has been a great loyal supporter of the Heineken Open so it was pleasing to see him proudly hold aloft the Heineken Open trophy for the third time in his career.

GeneralDespite the difficult weather conditions the tournaments were well supported by tennis enthusiasts and those who like to enjoy the spectacle of world-class sporting events.

The successful hosting of these events is a true team effort and we are very thankful for the mighty effort of our loyal band of volunteers who add a special touch to the tournaments in Auckland. This year Guy Nash, Chairman of Major Events Committee, retired from his volunteer duties and we take this opportunity to thank Guy, and his supportive wife Gloria, for the outstanding contribution he has made to the tournaments over the past 33 years.

We also thank our sponsors, suppliers and professional service providers for their support of these events and enthusaistic participation in the hosting and we look forward to their continued support.

Report from Chief ExecutiveROBYN KIDDLE

These past twelve months have been another year of change for Tennis Auckland and, in reality, this will no doubt be the only constant for some years to come.

We have recorded a significant financial turnaround from the previous twelve months. One that is both pleasing and necessary for the sustainable future of this region. This result has come about through change; it would be unreasonable to think that different results come from doing things as they have always been. Our management team has made modifications in almost every aspect of our operation to try to bring about a better region that can support its members on a sustainable basis.

It is important to note that our domestic operations are not contributing to any surplus we record and this is an area where we need to consider what further changes we can make to improve our financial sustainability while providing relevant services to our members.

One acknowledged aspect of change is that it is not easy for everyone to adapt to and, as history has often shown, changes will not always sit well with all the people all the time. However our management team continues to strive to bring value to our stakeholders and will always look to change that is in the best interests of the majority of our members.

Our international tournaments were held, for the first time, in a new arena environment with a new broadcast partner and not the most ideal weather conditions. It was challenging but thanks to our dedicated tournament team and ‘army’ of dedicated and enthusiastic volunteers we held a successful two weeks of quality tennis to record spectator numbers. These were Guy Nash’s last tournaments as Chairman of the Major Events Committee and at the close of the men’s tournament Guy confirmed his retirement to the volunteer group. Guy has had a long and committed association with the tournaments and we are very grateful for his service and assistance during that time.

Richard Palmer stepped down as Tournament Director earlier this year after successfully organising the tournaments in challenging circumstances in recent years and helping build the tournaments to the status they now hold in our community. We thank Richard for his role in our tournament growth and we know he will closely follow the continued success of these events.

Whilst the weather didn’t let us finish the ASB Classic the way we would have liked it did bring the need for weather protection into focus and we have recently had confirmation of $3 million of funding from Auckland Council towards our roof project. This is an important start in our funding quest that will continue in earnest over the years.

Game development, particularly the introduction of Grasshopper programmes throughout Auckland, has been very successful with more than 16,000 young Aucklanders experiencing tennis at school. We have used club based coaches, where possible, to deliver the programmes and our focus is now on growing the number of these children furthering their tennis experience by joining nearby clubs. Our interclub activity continued to be strong throughout the year and the associated tournaments organised by our Interclub team were equally as popular. Raewyn Hooper, our long-time Interclub Co-ordinator, resigned to take up work opportunities closer to home. Raewyn was a walking encyclopaedia when it came to Interclub and will be a hard act to follow.

Our Regional Performance Programme, based at Scarbro Tennis Centre, continues to grow and this year Auckland won the National Teams event which is testimony to the talent that exists amongst our junior players.

We received grant money that enabled us to relocate the fabric geodesic dome structure to Manukau Tennis Centre during the year. We now have much needed covered courts at Manukau and, at the time of writing, a wet weather cover was being installed over the court opening.

Members of the Tennis Auckland team who work predominantly in our domestic activities relocated to Scarbro Tennis Centre prior to the tournaments this year. With no permanent offices at ASB Tennis Arena the disruption to our operation at tournament time is significantly less now that the majority of the team work at Scarbro. When Tennis New Zealand moves to offices at the Millennium Centre we will take the upstairs offices and lease out the downstairs area. Scarbro Tennis Centre is taking centre stage as the hub of our tennis activities and we are focussed on growing the importance and contribution that this centre makes to our association.

The true highlight of my first year as Chief Executive has been the engagement with clubs. I have taken every opportunity to visit clubs for a variety of events and meetings and I have thoroughly enjoyed the time with our stakeholders, the majority of whom volunteer at our clubs. I am constantly humbled by the passion and dedication of our committee members, players, families and supporters at our clubs and I hope to continue this engagement even more in the next year.

Finally I want to sincerely thank my fellow management team members – we have achieved a lot together this year and often worked above and beyond to deliver the results. I also take this opportunity to acknowledge the support of our sponsors and funders who believe in Tennis Auckland and what we are trying to achieve and stand behind us with their on-going financial support and participation in our activities. We enjoy a strong family of supporters and we look forward to building these relationships going forward.

Schools ProgrammeThe Grasshopper tennis programme at schools in the Auckland region expanded significantly again this year. Eighty one schools, up from fifty five last year, participated in four week Grasshopper tennis programmes delivered by local coaches.

The number of children participating in these programmes was around 16,000 and we are tremendously proud of the fact that so many children received this tennis experience. Many of the children participating in the programme got their very first opportunity to play the sport and find out if it appealed to them. Judging by the feedback from schools many of them enjoyed their tennis and continued to play at school long after completion of the four week course.

Tennis Auckland funded a number of equipment kits containing rackets, balls and nets into the schools and by doing so we ensured that future generations at primary schools are able to benefit through access to tennis gear in the school sports shed. This is tremendously important for the sustainability of our sport and who really knows what may eventuate as a result. It is nice to think that perhaps one day someone will use the gear that we have gifted to a school and switch on to tennis for the rest of their life. The Grasshopper Programme also offered professional development sessions to teaching staff arming them with the knowledge and confidence to take tennis back to their classrooms.

None of this would have been possible without the significant funding support from the Four Winds Foundation and the three Regional Sports Trusts - Sport Auckland, Counties Manukau Sport and Sport Waitakere. Tennis enjoyed generous support through the Regional Sports Trusts and KiwiSport and for this we are incredibly grateful. Had we not received this support 16,000 school aged children would have missed out on the opportunity to play tennis last year.

In a separate initiative, Tennis Auckland joined forces with Tennis Northern and Tennis New Zealand to deliver a Grasshopper Roadshow in Auckland and Northland. Taster tennis sessions were delivered to 17 schools in Auckland reaching almost 7,000 school aged children. Staff and students were absolutely delighted by the tennis experience offered to them and they were all grateful for the equipment and giveaways that we left behind. We would like to acknowledge the support of Tennis Northern and Tennis New Zealand for their contribution to this successful project. This time the funding was courtesy of the ASB Community Trust and we know that the respective tennis organisations and the schools were very appreciative of this support which allowed us to showcase tennis in some very remote and low socio-economic parts of the region. Finally, a word of thanks to KIA for supplying vehicles to use for the duration of the Roadshow.

While there has been an enormous amount of tennis exposure through the primary and some intermediate schools via the Grasshopper model, we have not neglected tennis at Secondary School level. There is a very sound tennis competition already in place at this level but we have worked hard to provide more tennis opportunities for students who may want to try the sport. Based on the Grasshopper model, a programme was adapted for secondary schools and funding was secured enabling us to deliver tennis to eight schools. Each school received coaching, equipment and an offer of a community coach course as part of the programme. The initial concept was devised in partnership with Tennis Northern and we were successful with our joint funding application to the Regional Sports Trusts allowing us to deliver the secondary school programme over a two year period. Funding has also been secured to deliver a similar programme to several schools in the Waitakere region through Kiwisport. We are very fortunate to receive funding that allows us to offer more opportunities for more children to play our sport.

Easi-TennisLast season Tennis Auckland conducted Easi-Tennis courses at five venues across the Auckland Region. The three week programme attracts adult beginners to the sport and offers them a chance to learn how to play in an enjoyable and social environment. This year there were 148 participants in the programme and a number of them continued to play tennis upon completion of the initial course. Registrations are higher after Christmas when interest in tennis peaks due to the publicity surrounding the international tournaments in January. I would like to thank all of the coaches involved in the programme for their efforts and strongly encourage clubs to include adult beginner classes in their own coaching programmes.

Senior InterclubTennis players in Auckland enjoyed another highly successful season and our overall team entries were on a par with last year. 399 Summer Interclub teams competed in the various grades and there was a slight increase in the number of team entries for both Winter and Twilight Interclub. Even though the summer was not a particularly good one in terms of the weather, there were very few rainouts because players just stepped out on the court and played.

The courts at the ASB Tennis Arena were back in play for the season and it was nice to be back at our historical home. The Scarbro Caro Bowl competition was very even this year and we would like to congratulate Remuera for winning the men’s title and Kohimarama for taking out the ladies event for the very first time. The Scarbro Caro Bowl competition attracts the best players from around the country and the tennis is the best on offer in New Zealand outside of professional tournaments. Tennis Auckland would like to acknowledge the ongoing support of Scarbro Construction for their sponsorship of our flagship competition.

Congratulations to the Sunnyhills Tennis Club for once again being chosen as our Senior Interclub ‘Club of the Year.’ Thanks to all of the Interclub controllers, team captains and players for making this such a popular activity. Last but not least, thanks to Raewyn Hooper for bringing the players and the clubs together to really enjoy our sport.

Junior InterclubTeam entry numbers were very good with 309 teams in the Pre-Christmas competition and 331 in the Post-Christmas season. It was a credit to all teams that they managed to play all matches even though the summer weather was not particularly good. The Scarbro Junior Caro Bowl competition attracted entries from 17 teams which was slightly up on the year before. Thanks to Scarbro Construction for their support of this event and to Ross Morrison for organising play on match days. We would like to congratulate the players, team captains, parents and Interclub controllers for making this another successful season on the courts. Congratulations to the joint Junior Interclub ‘Club of the Year’ – Jellicoe Park and West Harbour. Finally, a big thank you to Dawn Morrison who administers the competition so brilliantly.

Jacobs Creek Mid-Week Lead-in and Summer InterclubThis was another successful year of competition enjoyed by 121 Pre-Christmas teams and 125 Summer Interclub teams. The number of entries was almost identical to the previous year and this speaks volumes for the popularity of this particular competition. It was decided at the Annual Debrief to trial a seven week Lead-In competition next season rather than continue with the existing 5 week format.

Congratulations to Howick for being chosen as the Midweek Interclub ‘Club of the Year’ and to all of the players who make this competition so enjoyable to be involved in.

Tennis Auckland acknowledges and appreciates the sponsorship support of Jacobs Creek for this competition. .

Auckland’s Regional Performance Programme (RPP) facilitates a world class coaching programme at Scarbro Tennis Centre enabling our talented juniors to pursue their individual tennis goals.

It is our vision to see Tennis Auckland’s Regional Performance Programme producing world class tennis players ultimately one day competing at the pinnacle of tennis on the international stage.

In 2011/2012 the coaching department has delivered quality tennis training to Auckland’s top aspiring tournament players. The coaching programmes three tiers have been tailored to meet the needs of each player’s varying ability and developmental levels. Our coaching team currently consists of Lee Radovanovich, Thiem Nguyen, Greg Owen (strength and conditioning coach) and is run by James Greenhalgh (Auckland’s appointed Regional Performance Manager and High Performance coach).

The 2011/ 2012 criteria has set transparent goals for player’s to strive for and the colour coded training uniforms reflect the players playing level and their individual achievements. The RPP offers up to 9 hours coaching per week and coaching sessions run every day of the week (before and after school) during school terms.

The RPP offers other additional player benefits such as monitored strength and conditioning sessions including three National Fitness tests per year with player reports, video analysis sessions for ‘High Performance’ players and this year an interactive “rules of tennis” seminar.

All athletes training in the Regional Performance Programme are encouraged to compete in tournaments and receive information and assistance with regards to tournament scheduling.

The Tennis Auckland Programme is raising the level of junior tennis in Auckland. It will continue to focus on the national and international achievement levels of our junior players and increase participation levels of the programme on an ongoing basis.

Every year to strive to improve the skill set and performance of the officiating at our two primary professional events in new Zealand, the WTA ASB Classic and the ATP Heineken Open.

This year unquestionably the officiating of our New Zealand officials was at the very highest level which is a credit to each and every official involved in both these events. As a result of this officiating excellence it was extremely satisfying for one of our officials, Dimitar Trifunovski, to only be one of 9 International Line Umpires invited by the ATP to be a Line Umpire for the Master Cup Finals in London in November late last year. This is an honour of the highest level for Dimitar but equally for our Association.

His father, Blaze Trifunovski, now permanently based in Germany continues to forge an outstanding full time a career as one of the leading Electronic Review Officials in world tennis, apart from his outstanding Chair Umpire work throughout Europe, Asia and the Americas.

Last year Blaze was the Chair Umpire of 63 matches on the ATP Tour in addition to his 27 weeks as a review official.

Currently our Association has 5 members with International Certification:

John Barry Referee

Stephen Noble Chief of Umpires, Referee

David Smith Referee

Blaze Trifunovski Chair Umpire

Dimitar Trifunovski White Badge Official

The last year has additionally seen John Barry and David Smith respectively the Referees of the ATP Heineken Open and WTA ASB Classic, Stephen Noble the Chief of Umpires for both of these events and additionally the Davis Cup Tie in Tauranga between NZ and Uzbekistan, together with being the Referee for the Configure Express pro circuit event in Wellington in late February. Additionally David Smith was the Referee in 3 Davis Cup ties over the last year; two involving Australia versus both Japan and China and also the recent Tie over Easter in Manila between Pakistan and the Philippines. John Barry was also the Referee for the ITF U18 Event.

One of our Association’s main focuses is the ongoing training and mentoring of officials. Training programmes have been conducted by John Barry (Referees) and David Smith (Chair Umpires) throughout the year and additionally Stephen Noble in co-ordinating the training of the Ball Kids for the two Major Events in January. We value their knowledge and the fact that they are committed to sharing this.

In closing, I wish to record my huge debt of gratitude to the small group on our executive who continue to do outstanding selfless work in managing the affairs of your Association. In particular I want to record the efforts of Lynly Barry, Carol Cummings, Blayne Newton, Teagan Ross, Desrae Garrett, Tim Shepherd, Bryall McPherson, Neeshah Dahya and Ross Morrison. Their efforts make my leadership task so much easier.

The past 12 months have been a relatively quiet period for the management of Tennis Seniors Auckland. This is largely a reflection on the limited number of people willing to be involved with the running of the organisation – a problem not uncommon in many sporting organisations. Despite this, the membership at Tennis Seniors Auckland remains at a high level with new members replacing those that retire from Tennis Seniors Auckland.

Tennis Seniors Auckland continues to offer its members social play, representative fixtures with adjoining Seniors Associations, access to Seniors Tournaments both in Auckland and throughout New Zealand, access to National Seniors events, and for our top players in their age groups access to International Seniors events.

Our Tournament at Labour Weekend continued to be well-supported both by players from Auckland and from around New Zealand. The arrangements with Farmers and the Eden-Epsom Tennis Club have proven to be most successful. The tournament is played over two days and offers tennis at all levels, and a great spirit of camaraderie.

Tennis Seniors Auckland played annual matches against Tennis Seniors from Hibiscus Coast, Waikato, Counties, South Auckland, Lower Northland, North Harbour and Northland during the year. These matches involve 12 men

and 12 ladies in each team and provide the opportunity for Auckland players to meet with and to compete against players from outside of the Auckland tennis scene.

Tennis Seniors Auckland continues to be well represented and its members have had considerable success, at National events and tournaments in the upper North Island in those events where each individual has responsibility for just their own entry. However, the lack of members willing to take on the responsibility for organising teams on a wider basis saw Auckland have just one team in the National Teams Event held in Wellington over Easter – down from the usual 8-12 teams for this event.

I would like to put on record my thanks to Julie Blow our long serving Secretary and a tireless worker, her husband David who despite wishing to retire as Treasurer last year has remained as Treasurer for this year, and Committee Members Jackie Antonievich, Helen Moffitt and Sita Brosig for their commitment and support.

I must also record here my thanks to my wife Maria who whilst not formally being on the Tennis Seniors Auckland Committee does as much, if not more, than anyone in support of Tennis Seniors Auckland.

Tennis Seniors Auckland PRESIDENT - DAVID BRADSHAW

Tennis Seniors South Auckland IncGreat news, we are proactively moving into the 21st Century.

With some encouragement from Dick Garratt and support of Glen Smith and John Cook and the membership we are in the process of formalising the name change, new logo and new gear. Along with this comes a Data Base, membership drive, regular news updates, and a home venue.

We are now in the main active time of the club with representative matches having started. These are always played with gusto and the wish to win, but also with the realisation that it is a sport and that there are many aspects to the enjoyment of the day.

The secondary school Saturday competition in 2012 involves 303 6-member teams from 56 schools, 181 boys’ teams and 122 girls’ teams.

However, in conjunction with Tennis Northern a new Monday afternoon competition was set up for North Shore schools, which involved another 54 teams, with four members per team rather than the usual six.

While a number of matches in some sections were defaulted, the new competition seems to have had a positive impact, with some new schools involved which may perhaps eventually aspire to rival the Westlake schools in the Saturday competition.

The Champion of Champions Tournament in March again gathered some of the top junior players in the region to compete for the prestigious titles.

In the boys’ competition Sacred Heart emerged as the strongest rivals to St Kentigern, without quite being able to clinch the James Aitkenhead Shield. Rhett Purcell beat both top seed Ryan Henderson and third seed Oliver Sadler to take the Senior Singles.

In the girls’ competition Danielle Feneridis was untroubled to retain her senior title and led Westlake Girls’ to a clear win over St Kentigern for the girls’ shield.

Detailed results of the school competitions appear in the Results section.

The 88th Pascoe Cup Business House Tournament was held at the Nicholson Park complex in Mount Eden and the Ngatira Tennis Club in Clive Road from 13th February to 28th March 2012 with the finals held at Ngatira on the 28th March.

This year’s event attracted 24 teams from 16 companies. The Men’s Doubles stayed at Nicholson Park due to the numbers but all Mixed and Ladies Doubles games were at Ngatira.

The winners and runners-up were;

Men’s Doubles: Telstra Clear Runners-up: Fliway International

Ladies Doubles: Somerville Special School Runners-up: Pumpkin Patch

Mixed Doubles: Somerville Special School Runners-up: Fidelity Life

Our sincere thanks go again to Pascoes the Jewellers and to Anne and David Norman for their continued support and interest in the association and the tournament.

To the Ngatira Tennis Club who worked with us during the tournament and on finals night our sincere thanks. And to all of the teams who continue to support and enjoy a unique tennis event we look forward to seeing you again in 2013.

Once again the Jacobs Creek Ladies Indoor Singles and Doubles tournaments proved very popular. Due to the construction of the ASB Tennis Arena we only had the use of the SCARBRO Tennis Centre so numbers were limited and we thank all the ladies that have supported this singles format. Due to the Rugby World Cup the Term 4 Singles competition did not go ahead.

The Jacobs Creek Indoor Doubles also followed a three person team format due to the limited number of courts available.

For the 2012 competitions we will be returning to the four person team format as the ASB Tennis Arena is back in operation.

Thanks to the Pro Shop staff at the SCARBRO Tennis Centre for their help in the administration of the two Tournaments.

The University of Auckland Business School competition consisted of two competitions each lasting 7 weeks during school Terms 2 and 3. Due to insufficient entries for A Grade, those entered were incorporated into B Grade which was split into sections based on team ability.
