2008 Annual Report UW-Marinette www.marinette.uwc.edu
2008 has been an exciting year at UW-Marinette for students, faculty and staff, and I am delighted to share the good newsabout the campus and the foundation inthis annual report to the community.
Service Learning at UW-MarinetteTo increase the opportunities for economicsuccess in our communities, UW-Marinettesought and received a grant from theWisconsin Campus Compact to hostRoxann Pazdera, an Americorps*Vistavolunteer on campus this year. Pazdera andAssociate Dean Jennifer Flatt developed apartnership with Marinette Middle Schoolto implement service learning that wouldinvolve UW-Marinette students workingwith 8th graders to help them gain the skillsand focus they need to be successful in highschool and college. Three courses developedfor spring 2009 with service learningcomponents include LEC 100 (First YearSeminar), PHI 244 (Environmental Ethics)and ENG 203 (Creative Writing). A ServiceLearning Advisory Board was also set up inDecember to help ensure the growth andsustainability of the program for the future.
Bachelor Degree CollaborationsIn cooperation with UW-Platteville, theUW Colleges are now developing an onlinecalculus and ethics course to complete thepackage of those courses necessary forstudents to access from a distance in orderto bridge into the Plattville EngineeringDegree Completion.
With program students ready to begin theirbaccalaureate studies in the Fall of 2010,UW-Marinette will begin receivingPlatteville’s engineering courses via streamingmedia over the internet. UW-Platteville willbring a mobile laboratory to campus every 4to 5 weeks for face-to-face laboratoryinstruction for the program.
Dual EnrollmentThe Dual Enrollment program will expandto Oconto High School in the fall withPhysics taught by Tina Salewski. This fall, acombined total of 64 students enrolled inEnglish taught by James Stillman and Mathtaught by Donna Kalafut at Peshtigo HighSchool and Public Speaking with AmyHinrichs at Marinette High School.
Students in these area high schools areeligible to earn college credit through dualenrollment programs. While they must payfor the tuition costs of the courses, the costis half for the same course at UW-Marinettebecause the salary of the instructor ispaid by the high schools, according to theagreement.
We are excited to see program growthsupported by our UW Colleges departmentsand, more importantly, by our campusfaculty even as it is eagerly embraced by ourcommunity high schools. These programsprovide additional opportunity to reachmore community students with a valuableUW-Marinette education.
Marine Design ProgramThe partnership forged in 2007 withMarinette Marine to meet the needs of theshipbuilding industry for marine designershas seen progress in two areas: course enroll-ment and a new grant.
The first online introductory shipbuildingdesign course with an enrollment of 8students ran from May 13 to July 17, 2008.A face-to-face course from October 6 -December 19 enrolled 10 students, and anonline version was delivered to 10 studentsfrom across the U.S. and the globe duringthe same period. A third online class willrun from February 9 to May 15, 2009. Andanother face-to-face begins February 3

Our mission at UW-Marinette Foundation has always been to createopportunities to support students’ educational growth, the faculty’scontinuing development and our campus’ excellence beyond what isprovided by public funds. The most critical job for those of us on theBoard of Directors is to sustain a culture that never falls short of thesegoals.
As you will read in the financial report below, the fiscal year beginningJuly 1, 2007, to June 30, 2008, was a challenging financial year for us.Although we experienced a loss, we have confidence in the conservativeand prudent decisions that our investment managers have made and we,as Board members, have volunteered hundreds of hours over the pastyear to educate ourselves about our financial positions and to exploreour potential for developmental growth in the future.
In the Spring of 2008 we celebrated the Emeritus Wall, a memorial toformer campus Dean William Schmidtke. The hallway in our Administrative Building beautifully displays framedportraits of past to present campus Deans and Faculty Emeriti. We also launched a Study-Abroad Scholarshipprogram that was awarded for the first time and have begun to explore ways to involve our Alumni withFoundation work.
Going forward we expect 2008-2009 will be equally challenging financially, with the impact of the marketdownturn in the latter half of 2008 and the recession. Yet we at the Board remain committed to our Mission. Weare grateful to those of you who did not waiver in your support of UW-Marinette Foundation last year. We feela common bond: a passion for this beautiful learning environment, its students, faculty and staff and how vitalthey are to our communities. We look forward to the year before us, working together to achieve our goals.
