The continuing digitalization of the economy and the dynamic developments in competitive arenas that are associated are posing new challenges to companies; there are consider-able threats to today’s businesses, yet fasci-nating opportunities to shape the future of the company. Two aspects are particularly import-ant for our customers: innovative, strategically based products, services and business models, as well as highly efficient business processes.

UNITY has achieved a leading position in the key areas of Industrie 4.0, platform economy, artificial intelligence, data-driven services, business model innovations, systems engi-neering for intelligent networked systems and IT management. The company‘s success is based on its customer projects, the high level of its employee expertise and the close ties it maintains with the scientific community. For example, UNITY cooperates with the Heinz Nixdorf Institute, the Fraunhofer Institute for Mechatronic Systems Design and acatech − the National Academy of Science and Engineer-ing. It is also involved with the leading edge, “Intelligent Technical Systems Ostwestfalen- Lippe (it s OWL)“, the Industrie 4.0 Platform and the International Data Spaces Association. This results in knowledge about new technologies and its possible applications − technologies that allow new markets to emerge and that will

have a decisive impact on tomorrow‘s perfor-mance. UNITY will always be a particularly at-tractive partner when it comes to the strategic development of a company, the development of products and services for tomorrow‘s mar-kets and the demand for intelligent solutions for challenging business processes. UNITY is in control of the path from the early business idea to market success. UNITY‘s customers in-clude 23 of the DAX 30 companies as well as many well-known midsize companies in the me-chanical engineering, electronics, process en-gineering, medical technology and healthcare industries.

Since its founding in 1995, UNITY has devel-oped extraordinarily well, independently and always at the pulse of the times. UNITY is a very well managed company that is well pre-pared for the challenges of digitalization and can achieve a balance to meet stakeholder ex-pectations fairly.

Every one of us notices this every day: The world around us is changing extremely fast. Whether it is the ubiquitous technological prog-ress or the global changes that cause us uncer-tainty – each company’s management is faced with the task of successfully mastering these challenges. We recommend that our customers do this am-bidextrously. On the one hand, they must opti-mize all existing business processes and, on the other hand, make consistent use of the opportu-nities that are offered by new technologies. In both cases, digitalization plays a key role. In addition, the mastery of increasing complexi-ty and agile action is more important than ever. This is why we offer our consulting services in four areas: Future Business, Advanced Develop-ment, Efficient Production and New Work (see pp. 12 and 13). We receive a lot of encouragement from our customers for our consulting approach as an innovator, integrator and transformer (see pp. 10 and 11). UNITY is not just about being a driving force for innovation and operational excellence, but also about involving and em-powering customers so that the implementation of ideas actually succeeds.Together with UNITY, they can take advan-tage of the opportunities offered by digital transformation to make their businesses more efficient and effectively use the opportunities of the future.

After 24 years, we can look back on anoth-er record year. With 270 employees by now, across 15 locations, we have achieved 15 % growth and € 46 million in revenue. We are extremely pleased to have received numerous awards again this year (see p. 55). The eight project stories (see pp. 18 to 39) provide a good insight into the UNITY project landscape. Implementing digital solutions is also part of being successful in the digital world of the future. Therefore, we created the UNITY In-novation Alliance a few years ago, which now has more than 400 employees (see p. 14). In 2019, another company was added: HYPERTEGRITY. Here we create mission-critical software solutions for more security in cloud services and platforms when transferring data.We are convinced that we are well-positioned for the future and can offer our customers a profitable range of services. We would like to thank everyone for their loyalty and coopera-tion, and hope you enjoy reading this year’s annual report.

The changes that a company un-dergoes on its path to digital trans-formation are diverse and serious − especially in light of the constantly increasing dynamics in this competi-tive arena. In order to master these challenges, new competencies and

know-how in new subject areas are needed. The UNITY Innova-tion Alliance bundles this required expertise in a unique way. Consist-ing of UNITY, NEXT Data Service, HYPERTEGRITY, CP contech electronic and Smart Mechatronics the Inno-

vation Alliance supports companies with continuous expertise in the dig-italization of business models, and products and services − from con-ception to implementation.

UNITY Innovation Alliance

Automotive Industry: Quality Control in VehiclesFor an automotive manufacturer, the UNITY Innovation Alliance led a successful project in the area of quality control: scratches on the vehicles can be identified with the help of neuron nets through an automated camera-based damage recognition system. Comprehensive data engineering served as the foundation for this. The AI solution that was devel-oped was then integrated into the logistics process. The automotive manufacturer was thus able to greatly reduce its manual inspection costs and efforts. In the next step, the data service will be industrialized and a concept for automated claim management will be developed.

Healthcare: AI-based Platform for OR PlanningThe UNITY Innovation Alliance has demonstrated how artificial intelligence can be used beneficially in OR planning at the Hôpitaux Robert Schuman Group in Luxembourg. We present this successful project in detail in our reference on page 22. A similar project that was conducted for the Hessing Foundation was awarded with the “Future Award Healthcare Industry.“ This award is presented annually by the Club of Healthcare Industry (cdgw).

Industrial Sewing Technology: From Industrial Sewing Machine to Smart Sewing AssistantDürkopp Adler has received several awards for this project that was conducted by the UNITY Innovation Alliance. Togeth-er we have succeeded in developing the M-TYPE DELTA, the Industrie 4.0 solution in sewing technology. After the product definition phase, UNITY‘s main project was the actual development of the machine following principles of agile systems engineering. CP contech electronic also contributed its expertise to the development and production of the control panel. Find out more about the entire project in our reference on page 18.

With the development of the M-TYPE DELTA, Dürkopp Adler has set a goal for itself to develop “Industrie 4.0 solutions in sewing technology” and to establish its po-sition as an innovation leader in digitalized manufac-turing in the textile industry. In order to achieve such an innovation leap, UNITY supported this project from the very beginning with its expertise: Structured devel-opment following the principles of agile systems engi-neering served to systematically define the product, con-duct holistic development in terms of the market, product and process; and to ensure an optimal market entry. By utilizing this approach, UNITY led the project team – consisting of Dürkopp Adler employees and UNITY con-sultants – throughout the entire duration of the project. In addition to the core projects of product definition and machine development, UNITY also took responsibility for

planning and supporting the market launch, planning the electrical assembly for the control technology, plan-ning the machine assembly, developing Dürkopp Adler’s digitalization strategy and optimizing its service organi-zation. As a part of the UNITY Innovation Alliance, CP contech electronic also provided support in developing and producing the control panel. This project has received two awards: Dürkopp Adler was the recipient of the Innovation Award Texpro-cess 2019 for the M-TYPE DELTA. In addition, UNITY took 1st place in the ‘Strategy’ category of the ”Best of Con-sulting“ award that was presented by WirtschaftsWoche.

Introducing AI-based Platforms in OR Planning

Improved accuracy of OR planning

Reduced employee overtime hours

Increased OR occupancy rate

by 12%

Artificial intelligence (AI) is opening up completely new possibilities in all industries. UNITY has transferred this potential for change into a concrete application case in the healthcare industry. For the clinics in the Hôpitaux Robert Schuman Group, surgery planning is a significant lever in continuous process improvement. Prior to each operation, many steps that determine daily objectives need to be conducted manually such as telephone con-firmations, data entry and rescheduling. This resulted in differences in planning, overtime and a suboptimal use of expensive resources in the OR. In a project with the UNITY Innovation Alliance, artificial intelligence was introduced into OR planning to automate planning pro-cesses. UNITY’s task was to define an innovative and ef-ficient process. The requirements that were derived by UNITY were then transferred to NEXT Data Service for further agile development. The OR planning was then realized by using a combination of algorithms. Rule- based systems and neural networks determined the

framework conditions for each operation. These could then be combined with an evolutionary algorithm to cre-ate the best possible OR plan. For each operation, ar-tificial intelligence was used to optimize the necessary resources, calculate probabilities for ad-hoc emergencies that needed to be planned and necessary buffer times as well as the actual duration of the surgery. This occurred continuously in real-time so that the operating room per-sonnel always had a current OR plan available. More than 100 factors flowed into operating room planning – a number so great that made it impossible for any one person to oversee it. Patients profit from this by having OR appointments that are reliable and planned as best as possible. Employees also profit from reliably planned work hours and optimally managed OR utilization.

SCHOTT is a leading inter-national technology group in the areas of specialty glass and glass-ceramics. It offers a broad portfolio of high-quality products and intelligent solutions for many industries, including home appliances, pharmaceuti-cals, electronics, optics, life sci-ences, automotive and aviation.

SCHOTT

“Together with UNITY, we have positioned SCHOTT for the future in terms of technology and organization. We have set up a globally valid IT/OT target architecture as well as a modern hub organization with an associated ecosystem. Above all, the UNITY consultants impressed us in their management of all the involved stakeholders, target group-oriented communication and their extensive technical expertise.”

SCHOTT‘s 42 production sites around the world are characterized by different types of production and vary-ing levels of digitalization. The OT (Operational Tech-nology) organizations are also heterogeneous and lack comprehensive leadership. This impeded further growth. SCHOTT‘s goal was to create synergies across locations, define standards and establish a higher level of leader-ship in order to enable efficiency and growth. In this proj-ect with UNITY, digitalization and architectural trends were thus combined with specific production potentials. Based on a site analysis in regard to the respective dig-italization capabilities, a uniform, company-wide IT/OT architecture was developed for production. Then, con-crete technologies, projects and initiatives were derived that would enable the digitalization of operations and

thus ensure speed, flexibility and scalability in increas-ingly faster moving digital markets. In order to bring the architecture to life, the project team developed a modern hub organization that included necessary governance structures. The change process can now be conscious-ly controlled due to the transparency that was created and the introduction of modern forms of collaboration. For this successful project, UNITY received the “Best of Consulting” award by the German business magazine WirtschaftsWoche in the category “Operations” and was distinguished with the label “Excellent.”

EMAG Taicang has been growing sustainably for years and is well positioned in the Chinese market. By the end of 2018, EMAG sold 270 machines and still expects to deliver a high volume of output over the next two to three years. In 2018, EMAG built a brand new factory in Taicang for commissioning and preliminary acceptance tests for customers who will be on site regularly. In order for a smooth and stable ramp up of the new factory to take place, UNITY was requested to provide consulting and coaching services to initiate lean management activi-ties. Together with EMAG‘s lean team, UNITY consultants evaluated the maturity of EMAG‘s lean management and identified improvement potentials along the main busi-ness processes in order to avoid waste in the process and to ensure the highest level of quality for the machines. After initial lean basic training with management and the shop floor workers, UNITY achieved an awareness of the

continuous improvement mindset in their daily work for the managers and employees of EMAG Taicang. In a later project phase, UNITY consultants supported and coached the EMAG lean team (“lean agents”) on the job and enabled them for future lean activities. After 4 months into the project phase, three fundamental lean projects were defined and executed: Introduction and pilot imple-mentation of 5S (a lean manufacturing methodology), an initial design of the production system for EMAG Taicang and a lean roadmap, and process management introduc-tion. At the end of project, EMAG lean agents continued with lean implementation such as the 5S rollout, provid-ing lean training and establishing a lean committee on the management level.

future robustness of real estate

Now more than ever before, the real estate sector is being subject to transformation due to the dynamics of digitalization and social change. Customer preferences and real estate requirements are changing rapidly, mar-ket boundaries are shifting and the industry is merging into an ecosystem of services. Consequently, it is becom-ing increasingly complex to assess the future robustness of real estate and financial projects.Together with UNITY, the Erste Bank der oesterreichischen Sparkassen AG has developed scenario-based portfolio management as a response to these challenges. An inter-disciplinary team analyzed the relevant factors from vari-ous areas of influence such as technology, economy and society, etc. Alternative projections were developed for

the drivers of change in Austria‘s real estate landscape in 2030. UNITY mapped these into three consistent fu-ture scenarios using system support. This approach al-lowed UNITY to take a completely new perspective and synchronize management perspectives. Based on this, various tools were developed that provide Erste Bank with additional flexibility so that it can identify trends at an early stage and shape the future proactively. At the same time, this approach offers the opportunity to ana-lyze segments for their future robustness and steer them accordingly.

Not only employees but also employers face great chal-lenges if employees are unable to complete their work due to restrictions such as accidents or illness. Volkswagen AG took this into consideration and created work condi-tions that allow for respectful and value-added employee assignments in the scope of its strategy – TRANSFORM.TOGETHER. Together with UNITY, a Group-wide flagship project was implemented at its location in Wolfsburg. The project STARK represents the five pillars: stabilization, training, development, respect and core added-value. Thus, a production area was redesigned in terms of work organization and promoting health in order to meet the special requirements of employees with work restric- tions. The most advanced production technologies avail-able and ergonomically designed workstations made this possible, as well as the intensive and personal supervi-

sion of foremen, HR, employee representatives and er-gonomic assistants. A holistic training and stabilization concept, which was developed specifically for this area, also contributed to this. The goal is to retain employees that have physical limitations and enable them to contin-ue their work in production or to reintegrate them. UNITY brought both expertise from the production environment as well as expertise from the healthcare and clinical sec-tors. Through a holistic consulting approach and the inte-grative abilities of the UNITY project team, this complex and highly sensitive project could be successfully imple-mented and executed at Volkswagen together with the Volkswagen team.

High quality training

development

In order to protect its own IT and OT (information & oper- ational technology) infrastructure against physical and virtual attacks, innogy relies on, among others, in-depth training for its employees in the areas of IT and OT. For this purpose, it set up its own proprietary training center, the “CyberRange-e,“ where employees have been train- ed in a realistic environment since mid-2019. Cyber- Range-e‘s service offering will be opened up to the entire German-speaking energy market based on an attractive business model. Together with UNITY, this project was tackled in a structured manner: First, the competitive land-scape was examined for realistic Cyber Security trainings and interviews were conducted with potential target cus-tomers so that the target positioning of the CyberRange-e ecosystem could be derived. The business model was then developed collaboratively and possible expansion

stages of the CyberRange-e ecosystem were defined. In the operationalization phase that followed, concrete pro-cesses, roles and competencies were defined and coop-eration models with external partners were set up. At the same time, UNITY coached the training center employeesby using concrete academic and training approaches. UNITY also supported the first on site training sessions and used the feedback from the first customers to further develop the quality of the service offerings. For a mar-ket-oriented approach, marketing and sales activities were initiated that were appropriate for the target group. The CyberRange-e finally opened in July 2019 with a high level of media interest for third party customers.

“I am impressed with the way the UNITY team works. They are not just another consulting company trying to roll out standard processes. They consider the entire project from a systemic perspective and guide everyone involved through the change process right from the start. UNITY also coached our employees to develop the best processes for the company.”

The new European Medical Device Regulation (MDR) will go into effect in May 2020. It is intended to both increase product safety and further harmonize indus-try regulations. As a leading supplier of breast pumps, breastfeeding accessories and medical vacuum technol-ogy, Medela recognized the need to update its quality management processes and the technical documentation for each of its individual products. Together with UNITY, Medela planned and implemented this project in a struc-tured manner, and at the same time, used the opportunity to take its business efficiency to the next level. In order to accomplish this, the entire process landscape was

redesigned. MDR-relevant processes were tackled di-rectly. Furthermore, UNITY analyzed the Medela prod-uct portfolio – both in terms of regulatory status as well as with regard to future business relevance. Based on this, Medela can make the right strategic decisions. With their extensive technical expertise, UNITY consultants also supported Medela in complying with the MDR through technical documentation as well as revising its standard operating procedures.

“For our cloud-based, digital safety compliance solution ‚mCom ONE,‘ we have developed a ’Safety as a Ser-vice’ business model with UNITY. UNITY supported the solution all the way to its successful launch and helped us think in terms of ecosys-tems rather than linear business models.“

“As a regional and digital partner for our corporate customers, we provide them with strategic and trustworthy business support at eye level. Competence Development for Digital Transformation

Our Approach: Holistic and Experience-oriented We provide support for companies throughout their in-dividual digital transformation – from identifying neces-sary skills to empowering employees and coaching them in their daily work. Our services range from training, awareness & networking events, involvement in think tanks to short and fast project implementation through specially designed workshop formats (boost camps). Our approach focuses on project-based learning and the in-tegration of consulting and professional education into one. Here is an example from our training program:

Digital Engineering: Product Lifecycle Management – The Enabler of the Business of TomorrowThe ability to manage product and system data across the entire product life cycle and all value-added areas is crucial to tomorrow‘s success. In order to prepare compa-nies for this, UNITY and the Fraunhofer IEM (Institute for Mechatronic Systems Design) have developed training courses for different target groups. These are character-ized by a high level of practical relevance and use an experience-oriented learning approach. The framework for our high-caliber PLM training courses are based on the sound theoretical knowledge of our trainers, current trends and applications as well as the practical applica-tion of methods and IT tools. We offer the following three training courses: Digital engineering basics, digital engin- eering for designers, digital engineering for decision makers.

Systems Engineering (SE) – Product & Service Development in the Digital AgeUNITY is licensed by the Society of Systems Engineering (GfSE) as a partner for systems engineering certification, making it one of only three training providers in Germany for the renowned SE-ZERT® training program. In addition to certification preparation, we offer a comprehensive training program − from orientation workshops to inten-sive trainings and step-by-step training programs.

Agile Project ManagementShorter product cycles, faster innovation speeds and the rapid change of customer segments motivate the appli-cation of new, agile methods. Based on software engin- eering methods, this training course teaches approaches and methods that increase flexibility and speed in proj-ects. Practical agile fundamentals are taught as well as methods and frameworks that are helpful in daily project work. Accelerate deadlocked projects and motivate the team.
