More than half a century ago, a spark of inspiration radiated from three
brilliant minds. With a shared desire to introduce a catalyst for fueling
new industries in the Southwest, UT Dallas founders Cecil Green, J. Erik
Jonsson and Eugene McDermott glimpsed what could be — a world-
class institution serving as a hub for learning and collaboration, invention
and discovery.
The University was born out of a pioneering spirit, constructed on a solid
foundation and continues expanding upon a legacy of innovation thanks
to record philanthropic support. With Tier One in sight, today UT Dallas
impacts the entire region while advancing young minds and creating
intellectual capital.
The future is bright, and it all started with a spark.

I write to you — our closest friends and supporters — with the deepest gratitude and appreciation.
Thanks to you, the first comprehensive campaign in our history has been a monumental success.
When we began the silent phase in September 2009, it was not the best of times. Financial giants
were collapsing. Automakers were seeking massive bailouts. Housing prices were plummeting. The
only economic certainty was widespread uncertainty.
Despite this, we pressed forward with a five-year campaign to raise $200 million toward our founders’
vision of becoming a leading Tier One research university. Support ignited and by March of this year,
we surpassed the goal nine months ahead of the campaign’s December conclusion.
The donor stories and financial figures in this year’s annual report only begin to demonstrate the
impact of this campaign. For the rest of the story, I encourage you to visit UT Dallas.
Come see the excitement on the faces of our students benefiting from new scholarships and
fellowships. Come meet the faculty members whose teaching and research efforts have been
empowered through new endowed professorships and chairs. And come experience our campus,
as the addition of buildings and green spaces demonstrates a transformation into a truly Tier One
academic setting.
None of this would have been possible without the unprecedented support for this campaign. You
kindled the flame of progress and made this happen. Thank you for being part of this historic effort.
With gratitude,
David E. Daniel

New Scholarship Honors First Lady of Real Estate
Ebby Halliday is a name that has long reverberated throughout
North Texas. Known as Dallas’ First Lady of Real Estate, Halliday
is admired near and far for both her business prowess and her
philanthropic efforts. Now thanks to her firm, Ebby Halliday
Realtors, that powerful name will continue to resonate for
generations at UT Dallas through the establishment of the
Ebby Halliday Scholarship Fund to support aspiring real estate
students in the Naveen Jindal School of Management.
“Ebby Halliday set the stage for our company to not only focus
on meeting the needs of homebuyers and sellers, but for our
company to give back to the community at large and to prepare
the foundation for the next generation in so many ways,” said Mary
Frances Burleson, president and CEO of Ebby Halliday Realtors.
“We look at this scholarship as a means to positively impact the
lives of promising young scholars for many years to come.”
Founded in 1945, Ebby Halliday Realtors participated in more
than 19,500 property transactions in 2013 with a sales volume
exceeding $6.4 billion. With a mission to “serve the client, serve
the community and serve the industry,” Ebby Halliday associates
and staff are encouraged to embrace and help build the
communities they serve.
In addition to Ebby Halliday Realtors’ contribution, UT Dallas
Distinguished Alumna Jefflyn Williamson BS’83, owner of
Jefflyn & Company Commercial Real Estate, which manages the
majority of Ebby Halliday’s commercial buildings, matched the
firm’s gift to further the impact to students.
“Scholarships played a key role in my education,” Williamson said.
“Given the opportunity, I felt it important to do my part to create
a more substantial impact on another generation of students at
the University that provided me with a solid foundation.”
Launched in 2011, the Jindal School’s real estate program
enrolls 190 undergraduate and graduate-level students. Courses
emphasize practical tools, decision-making and the very latest
analytical technologies, preparing students for the unique
demands of the industry. The Ebby Halliday Scholarship Fund is
the first to directly benefit the program.
“The real estate industry makes a profound impact on every
sector of business and public policy, so it is important for the
School of Management to play a prominent role in this influential
landscape,” said Dr. Hasan Pirkul, Jindal School dean and
Caruth Chair. “The Jindal School’s real estate program aims to
provide students with tools to succeed in the industry, and this
scholarship supports those efforts.”
Myles Bowen, a first-year graduate student, was selected as the
first Ebby Halliday Scholarship Fund recipient this fall.
“It is truly an honor being named a recipient of a scholarship
bearing such a legendary name,” Bowen said. “The financial
assistance makes such an impact, and I look forward to learning
as much as possible before setting out into the industry.”

For UT Dallas’ Academic Bridge Program (ABP),
graduation is the ultimate goal. With a graduation rate of
approximately 70 percent — well above state and national
averages — the program is seeing results. Corporations
and foundations such as the AT&T Foundation,
Ericsson Inc., Goodman Networks, the Hillcrest
Foundation, the Michael and Alice Kuhn Foundation, TG,
the Carl B. & Florence E. King Foundation and The Dallas
Foundation like those results and have been investing in
the program that invests in futures.
“The Academic Bridge Program is making a difference in
the lives of young people, preparing them for productive
futures,” said Gunjan Aggarwal, head of human resources
for Ericsson. “Ericsson has been involved in supporting
students with resume writing and job interviewing and is
proud to be a part of this program.”
Founded in 2000, ABP recruits first-generation college
students ranking in the top 20 percent from local urban high
schools and serves approximately 160 students annually.
“Not all students — even high-ranking high schoolers —
are prepared for the rigors of collegiate life,” said
Dr.|George Fair, vice president of diversity and community
engagement and dean of the School of Interdisciplinary
Studies, who founded ABP. “Some need additional
resources to make a successful transition. This is where
the program is focusing efforts and bridging the gap.”
Incoming freshmen take part in an intensive summer
session prior to their first semester to help acclimate to
collegiate life. Weekly group meetings and mandatory
tutoring allow ABP staff to monitor and facilitate the
transition. A social element provides ABP students
opportunities for cultural awareness activities and
community service projects. The students receive support
from faculty and staff as well as upperclassmen, who serve
as peer advisors.
“My Academic Bridge mentors helped me to develop
perseverance and confidence,” said Claudia Berumen
BS’12, a Web application developer at IBM.
ABP participants not only are graduating at high rates, but
also are securing impressive internships and employment.
Academic Bridge graduates have gone on to work for
corporations such as Texas Instruments, Cisco, Ericsson,
AT&T, IBM, Raytheon, Fidelity Investments, JP Morgan
Chase Bank, Compass Bank, Alcatel-Lucent and JC
Penney Co., as well as having careers in law, medicine
and education.
As a Green Fellow at UT Southwestern Medical Center,
ABP student Johanan Rodriguez BS’14 spent 16 weeks
pursuing a prosthetics research project incorporating
robotic sensory measures to help patients receiving a
prosthetic arm.
“More than anything, the mentoring I received from
ABP staff and upperclassmen helped me to navigate
my college career and find opportunities like the Green
Fellowship,” Rodriguez said.
Rosalinda Valenzuela BA’04, MA’08, PhD’12 was the
first ABP graduate to earn a PhD. Although she originally
planned on a career in medicine, a professor urged her
to reconsider. Today, Valenzuela works for the University,
reinvesting in the program that first pushed her to succeed.
“The Academic Bridge Program gave me unconditional
support and encouragement to succeed not just in school,
but in life,” Valenzuela said. “I always share my experience
with my students and tell them that success is possible
if there is determination and persistence and you never
forget your humble beginnings.”
Garry Miller Jr. BS’07, a member of the second ABP class,
credits the program for instilling a standard of excellence
and fostering a culture of achievement. Through the
establishment of the Bridge to Our Future Opportunity
Fund, Miller hopes to provide assistance enabling “future
Academic Bridge Program students to step forward into
their destiny” while honoring the mentors who helped
chart his path.
“The combination of need-based aid and support services
is a solid strategy for helping students succeed in higher
education, and we’re pleased to have provided support for
this exceptional program over the past three years,” said
Sue McMillin, TG president and CEO.

Alumnus Honors Professor’s Influence Decades Later
Couple’s Fellowship Helps Graduate Students
Until recently, Dr. Solomon Luo MS’78 hadn’t seen
Professor John Jagger since his graduation from the
University more than three decades ago. Yet the influence
of this instructor has long made an impression upon Luo’s
success. In recognition of that impact, Luo and his wife,
Wendy, created the John Jagger Scholarship for Natural
Sciences and Mathematics.
“Dr. Jagger was an influential mentor during my time at
UT|Dallas, and he went out of his way to assist me with
my acceptance into medical school,” Luo said. “If not for Dr.
Jagger, I probably wouldn’t have gone down that path.”
As chairman, president and CEO of Texas Instruments,
Rich Templeton wants to drive research and innovation
right here in North Texas, which is why he and his wife,
Mary, created an endowed fellowship for graduate
students in the Erik Jonsson School of Engineering and
Computer Science. The Mary and Richard Templeton
Fellowship will support future students pursuing a
master’s or doctorate in any field in the Jonsson School.
The Templetons met while students at Union College in
New York, where he was studying electrical engineering
and she was a computer science major. Rich joined
Texas Instruments following graduation in 1980. He
was named president and CEO in 2004 and became
chairman of the board in 2008.
Through almost 30 years of marriage, the Templetons
have shared a commitment to education and
community service, touching countless lives. Mary
has served on numerous boards including the Boys
& Girls Club of America Southwest Region, the Dallas
Arboretum, the University of Dallas and John Paul II High
School in Plano, Texas.
Jagger was a professor of general studies and biology first
at the Graduate Research Center of the Southwest starting
in 1965, through the transition to UT Dallas and until his
retirement from the University in 1989. During a recent visit
to the Dallas area, Luo and his wife were able to reconnect
with the professor and visit about the scholarship bearing
the beloved educator’s name.
In 1986, Luo founded a private practice in eastern
Pennsylvania. Known today as the Progressive Vision
Institute, his practice boasts 11 locations and 15 physicians,
including Luo’s three children. Nationally recognized for his
expertise in cataract and refractive surgery, Luo was one of
the first physicians in his area to perform surgery to correct
nearsightedness in 1989.
After 25 years of performing more than 30,000 ophthalmic
surgical procedures, Luo still feels pulled to honor a man
who first pushed him toward the medical arena.
“It was such a joy to visit Dr. Jagger and share with him how
profoundly he impacted my life,” Luo said. “My time at the
University, in combination with Dr. Jagger’s guidance, set
the course for my life.”
Prior to Luo’s arrival at UT Dallas in 1975, he had already
earned a bachelor’s degree from Fu Jen Catholic University
in his native Taiwan. After earning a master’s degree in
environmental studies from the School of Natural Sciences
and Mathematics, he completed a medical degree at The
University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston and his
residency at Temple University Hospital. Since 2005, Luo
has also served on the board of trustees at Temple.
“Perhaps I too can leave a lasting impact for a UT Dallas
student, providing opportunities for a future just barely
dreamed of,” Luo said.

Rich and Mary Templeton
Rich has led TI’s internal United Way campaign for more than
a decade, and served as chair of the 2012-2013 United Way of
Metropolitan Dallas campaign. He is also one of four co-chairs
for the Realize the Vision campaign, joining Debbie Francis,
James Huffines and Ron Nash MS’79.
“The impact of engineering and computer science on our world
is something that Mary and I strongly believe in,” Templeton
said. “We are pleased to offer our personal support to the
students who will learn here and then use their knowledge to
create new technologies that change lives.”
The Templetons’ gift has helped propel the Jonsson School’s
campaign total past $57 million, far surpassing the school’s
$40 million campaign goal. “This is certainly a special gift
for the Jonsson School,” said Dr. Mark Spong, dean of the
Jonsson School and Lars Magnus Ericsson Chair in Electrical
Engineering. “Texas Instruments has been a wonderful
longtime supporter, but this personal gift from Mary and Rich
speaks to their confidence in the strength of our programs
and our future success.”

As an electrical engineering professor, Dr. Gil Lee knows
the power of education.
But today, a college degree comes at a cost that can be
daunting for many. So Lee has a clear message: Use your
education to help those students coming behind you.
Lee began teaching in the Erik Jonsson School of
Engineering and Computer Science in 2001 and soon
witnessed how financial assistance attracted potential
students, some from his native South Korea. He began
recruiting undergraduates from his home country with
the help of scholarships and financial support. Last year,
Lee took it a step further with the establishment of the Gil
Sik Lee Scholarship Fund. Not only did Lee write the first
check, he asked for contributions from former students
who earned degrees due in part to scholarships.
“The only benefit I receive from the scholarship is
that I’m happy,” Lee said. “This is for the sake of the
students and the University.”
UT Dallas Professor Looks Beyond the Classroom, Invests in Students’ Futures
Decades of service at the Naveen
Jindal School of Management led
Skip Moore to give more than just his
time. A managing partner for Deloitte
and longtime Jindal School advocate,
Moore decided to make a planned gift
following his departure as chair of the
school’s advisory council. As he passed
the leadership baton this fall, he felt the
timing was right to consider his legacy.
“I had become a huge believer in the
quality of the school, the future of the
school and the importance of the school
to the community,” Moore said. “Donating
was an easy decision to make.”
With a strong desire to make a
significant contribution toward the
Realize the Vision campaign, Moore
chose to allocate funds from his estate
plan toward the Skip Moore Leadership
and Service Scholarship, which Dr.|Hasan
Pirkul, Jindal School dean and Caruth
Chair, created this fall in his honor.
“After exploring various options for giving,
making the University a retirement plan
beneficiary was the best choice for my
situation,” Moore said. “It was easy to do,
will save my family money on taxes and
with the dean setting up the scholarship,
it created the perfect opportunity to do
my part.”
For Moore, his planned gift is a
special, considered moment after
numerous Jindal School experiences
and interactions. He has twice been an
advisory council member, interrupting his
service in 2003 to spend several years as
an advocate for the school’s developing
Institute for Excellence in Corporate
Governance. He returned to the council
in 2009, spending the last two years as
its leader.
But don’t think Moore is done yet.
He will continue to be a part of the
advisory council and recently joined the
University’s development board.
“I’ve always had a passion for education.
I believe that anything we can do to
give back to that cause and help others
with the educational process through
scholarships or other means is an
extremely important thing.”
Longtime Advocate’s Planned Gift Furthers Student Impact
Fifteen answered the call, and Lee hopes this is just the
beginning. The young donors — individuals pursuing
other degrees and embarking on new careers — may
not have the means to make multi-figure gifts, but they
understand the importance of scholarships. If these
graduates and others contribute in some way annually,
Lee envisions making a big difference.
“I hope this program can grow and hundreds of students
can be successful,” Lee said.
In 2013, 12 undergraduates received funds from Lee’s
scholarship, with the second round of awards made this fall.
Beyond the classroom, Lee invests time in these and the
more than 50 other individuals he has recruited to the
University during his tenure. He monitors grades, engages
in one-on-one meetings and invites students to social
gatherings, providing encouragement and motivation.
“Maybe if I can contribute to a good environment, I can
help students excel,” he said.
Raised in a poor neighborhood in South Korea, Lee was
the first of his six siblings to complete high school and
the only one to attend college. “The reason I’m in a good
place is because I received a good education,” he said.
Lee hopes by combining his gift with a collection of
contributions directed toward a singular cause, he can
make a powerful impact at UT Dallas.
“I want to share what I learned, what I earned, so it all
goes back into the community,” Lee said.

Alumni and friends contributing $1,000 and above
during the fiscal year to any UT Dallas center,
program or school are acknowledged through
membership in the Love Jack Society. The society
derives its name from the iconic “Jack” created by
American modernist sculptor Jim Love. The piece
was donated to the University in 1976.
“We are most passionate in our support of the Ackerman Center for Holocaust Studies and take great pride in the growth and achievements throughout the University. The public programs offered by the Ackerman Center and others at UTDallas are a vital resource to this community. We appreciate the tremendous support we receive from the University.”

“As a college graduate, naturally I support my alma mater. However, I also contribute to the institution I’ve been associated with the longest
— UT Dallas. It has become my home, and I’m glad to support the work and the people who are shaping the future.”

The Comet Whoosh Society recognizes alumni
who are committed to supporting UT Dallas
year after year. Gifts of any amount may be
designated to support any school or program
but must be given in consecutive years for
recognition at one of the four membership levels.
“In recent years, I noticed improvements in the ways UT Dallas was trying to communicate with me. It felt much more inclusive and collaborative. It also became clear to me — and I hope other alumni — that a successful future for UT Dallas will not be possible without our time and monetary investments. I’m excited to be in a position to provide both.”
- Melisa Mrazik BS’93Accenture
28 292014 Annual Report to Donors The University of Texas at Dallas
The Legacy Society recognizes alumni and friends
who have included UT Dallas in their estate plans.
These enduring commitments allow the University
to plan for future growth, as well as provide donors
with the gratification of knowing their philanthropic
efforts will impact the University for years to come.
“Employed by UT Dallas from inception until 1986, I witnessed firsthand the University’s impact on the community at large. With continuous growth and an escalating quality of students and programming, the institution is an even greater asset to the region today – something I believe is worth my support.”
- Elizabeth “Libby” Exley Hodge
