Educational ServicesEducational ServicesEvery child should be able to attend school in an

environment that offers the greatest opportunity for success.St. Catherine’s offers that opportunity. Our R & E May Schoolis a day treatment program that serves elementary schoolstudents with behavioral and special educational needs thatcannot be met in a traditional school setting. Each studententering the program undergoes an individual assessment todetermine his or her educational and social needs. The schoolstaff—including special education teachers, mental healthprofessionals, social workers, clinicians and other supportstaff—then develops a comprehensive plan tailored to meetthe needs of the individual student. The school also partnerswith the child's family and home school district to ensure thegreatest chance for success, helping the student develop theknowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to reach his or herfull potential.

Residential ServicesResidential ServicesWhen a child is removed from the care of his or her

parents or guardians, that child not only needs a safe placeto live, but often requires special care. St. Catherine’sresidential program provides treatment for boys and girls,

ages five to 13, who have been removed from their homesand require 24-hour supervised treatment and care.Children entering St. Catherine’s residential program displaya variety of emotional and challenging behaviors. Manyhave a history of trauma, or have suffered from abuse orneglect. Children enter St. Catherine’s residential programbased on their need for intensive care in a therapeutic set-ting. Services include individual, group, and family therapy;psychiatric and psychological evaluation; crisis stabilizationand assessment; and daily recreational activities. Develop-ment of a permanency plan is a critical element of theprogram. A permanency plan identifies obstacles to homeplacement, and establishes a treatment plan designed tohelp a child return to his or her home as soon as possible. When a return to a child’s home of origin becomesimpossible, adoption or foster care placement are possiblealternatives to residential care.

Therapeutic Foster CareTherapeutic Foster CareChildren thrive in homes where they are nurtured and

loved. St. Catherine’s therapeutic foster care program servesspecial-needs children, from pre-school through teens, whorequire foster care in a therapeutic home setting. Children inthe program are identified and matched with professional

Homeless Family ServicesHomeless Family ServicesHomelessness is a problem that threatens families and

burdens communities. St. Catherine's homeless servicesoffer shelter and support for families and individuals whoare, or are at risk of becoming, homeless. Marillac shelterprovides a temporary residence for homeless families for upto six months at a time. Marillac, Albany County's only shel-ter designed exclusively for families, not only offers emer-gency shelter, but also provides supplemental services andadvocacy to address issues that lead to homelessness.St. Catherine’s newest homeless program, Project HOST,offers housing and health services for homeless singles inAlbany and Rensselaer counties. St. Catherine’s homelessfamily services also extend to Columbia County, where theagency offers support and intervention services for familiesat risk of becoming homeless. All homeless programs aim tohelp the homeless find secure, permanent and adequatehousing, while in some cases offering supplementalservices deemed essential for the welfare of the family orindividual, including health and employment counseling, day care, and other critical services.
