STATEMENT FROM THE CEO

1

Starting my new role as CEO of Pollution Probe has been – in many ways – a homecoming.

I have known and admired Pollution Probe since I first was introduced to the organization by then-Executive Director Ken Ogilvie in 1996. The organization’s dedication to non-partisan, evidence-based policy development and environmental action was impressive. Pollution Probe’s willingness to tackle difficult tasks and challenge the status quo in order to champion and test new ideas was inspiring. I specifically remember Pollution Probe's leadership in the launch of the Pilot Emissions Reduction Trading Project (PERT) in 1996, an early cap-and-trade pilot that was truly ahead of its time. I never forgot that courage and integrity.

Building my career in environment and energy, I have witnessed low moments. For me, the lowest point came in 2000 as I sat in the front row of the UNFCCC COP 6 climate change talks in the Hague, Netherlands, and watched as the wheels began to fall off. Things looked bleak: we were not going to be able to get our act together to save our planet from the effects of human-driven increases in greenhouse gas emissions. It felt horrible; like we were stuck together on a sinking ship.

Over 15 years later, the Paris Agreement was signed. Watching from my new home in Europe, I was moved to self-reflection and two things became clear:1) I had lost hope far too soon; and2) There is much, much more work to do and I wanted to be a part of it.

The same year, I joined Pollution Probe. This opportunity to work with an expert, dedicated team toward the betterment of Canada’s environment is an honour. I am excited to share with you – on behalf of our entire team – the work that we have driven and our accomplishments in the 2016/2017 fiscal year.

With great pride and thanks,

Ingrid E. ThompsonChief Executive OfficerPollution Probe

OUR MISSIONWe seek to improve the health and well-being of Canadians by advancing policy that achieves positive, tangible environmental change.

OUR VISIONWe aspire to be recognized as a leading source of information on environmental issues, to partner credibly with government and industry in developing environmental solutions, and to be a trusted voice on environmental policy.

OUR GOALSWe work to constantly improve our ability to discuss, educate and engage people with content that is current and thoroughly researched in order to create change.

2

InclusiveWe consider the interests of all those with a legitimate stake in an issue, and with them we seek opportunities to partner and to build coalitions of support for progressive policy.

IndependentIn all business activities, we work to maintain our capacity to act independently in representing the needs of the general public.

Non-PartisanWe seek to work cooperatively with all levels of government and with all political parties to ensure that the environmental needs of current and future generations are addressed.

Results-OrientedWe choose issues and engage in activities when we judge that we may reasonably expect tangible results that improve the environment from our participation.

FocusedWe undertake activities that are fundamentally directed at supporting and enabling policy change.

Evidence-BasedWe are led by science, basing our positions upon sound research and objective analysis, rather than ideological labels.

LearningWe build our knowledge and capacity by constantly testing our assumptions and validating our impact by surveying our colleagues, by consulting experts and by maintaining an open mind when engaging stakeholders.

InnovativeWe always seek new and effective means of achieving our mission, adapting our approach to advocacy as issues emerge and the market evolves.

The Healthy Communities Campaign The Healthy Communities Campaign focuses on how climate change effects our environments and therefore how these changes can effect our health. This year we worked to develop a new workplace based phase of our Healthy Communities Campaign that focuses on climate change and health.

EduTOXPollution Probe, Health Canada and the University of Ottawa along with several leading sponsors created EduTOX, a youth engagement initiative that inspired people to create short fun videos on topics of environmental risks to our health. The contest encourages active learning about how youth can protect themselves from health risks. This year over 50 fantastic submissions were received.

Radon Action Challenge To respond to the lack of public awareness surrounding the health concerns involving Radon build up, Pollution Probe partnered with the Canadian Partnership for Children’s Health and Environment to create the Radon Action Challenge. This initiative provided free test kits and targeted education material to workplaces in order for employees to be educated and encouraged to test for Radon in their homes. The Radon Action Challenge reached over 70 workplaces across Canada.
