On behalf of the Oregon Sports Authority board of directors and staff, we are pleased to share with you the many highlights of the past year. We’ve hosted some very special events like the USA Gymnastics Men’s Junior Olympics, and are excited for many more to come in the years ahead. On the team sport side of things, it’s simply been an unprecedented year: wildly successful debut seasons for the Hillsboro Hops and Portland Thorns; a thrilling run to the Western Hockey League Championship for the Winterhawks; College Baseball World Series appearances for both Oregon and Oregon State; a season full of dramatic victories for the Timbers with a playoff run around the corner; and Trail Blazers’ rookie point guard Damian Lillard becoming just the fourth player in NBA history to win Rookie of the Year by a unanimous vote.

As we celebrate a year of remarkable accomplishments, we’d like to thank you for your continued support as we all join together to enhance Oregon through sport.

Moda Center to Become Only Arena in the Country to Host Three Times in Seven Years

The Oregon Sports Authority is thrilled to announce that Portland will host the second and third rounds of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship at the newly-named Moda Center on March 19 and 21, 2015. The successful NCAA Tournament bid was submitted by the University of Oregon, Oregon Sports Authority, Rose Quarter and Travel Portland, the same partnership that hosted thrilling NCAA Tournament games in 2012 and 2009. The 2015 event will mark the third time in a seven-year period that the Moda Center will host March Madness - making it the only arena in the nation to do so.

the stars of tomorrow playing for the single-A affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks. In just one season, the Hops and their critically acclaimed ballpark have become a civic treasure for Hillsboro and the greater Portland region.

U.S. and Canadian National Team stars Alex Morgan and Christine Sinclair teamed up to form one of the most potent rosters in the National Women’s Soccer League, capturing the imagination of local soccer fans in the process.

Earlier in the evening Costa Rica defeated Cuba 3-0 in the Gold Cup doubleheader that gave Oregonians a rare chance to experience the pageantry and passion of international men’s soccer. The Gold Cup, secured by the Portland Timbers with support from the Oregon Sports Authority, is a biennial event composed of the top 12 men’s national soccer teams from North America, Central America, and the Caribbean. Building on the momentum from their opening match in Portland, the U.S. Team went on to capture the 2013 Gold Cup title with a 1-0 victory over Panama on July 28.

The tournament will serve as a celebration of Phil Knight’s 80th birthday while also honoring Mr. Knight, his wife Penny and Nike for their unwavering support of college athletics. The Oregon Sports Authority will take on a key role in organizing the event, which is already being called the greatest in-season college basketball tournament of all-time.

Healthy Youth Oregon® GrantsThe Oregon Sports Authority Foundation continues to provide meaningful physical activity opportunities through its Healthy Youth Oregon grant program:

Yoga at Marysville Elementary 3-on-3 Basketball at Jefferson High

Intramurals at Franklin High

Jointly funded by the Multnomah Athletic Foundation and the Oregon Sports Authority Foundation, 5th and 6th graders participated in a yoga class prior to the start of school that allowed them to increase their learning experience while developing knowledge and skill in a healthy and rewarding lifetime activity. Younger students also had the opportunity to participate in an after-school yoga program.

The Reward Youth Ticket Exchange, or RYTE program, provided thousands of Trail Blazers and Winterhawks tickets to deserving youth at local schools and youth service organizations. The Trail Blazers tickets are donated by season ticket holders who are unable to attend a game, with sponsorship support from OregonLive.com, while the Winterhawks ticket donations are made possible by Bank of the West.

Funded by adidas, countless high school students participated in an intramural 3-on-3 basketball program that focuses on general students who appreciate the recreational value of sports and are striving for a chance to become active and socially engaged.

Funded by the Clark Foundation, students participated in dance, badminton, weight lifting, ultimate frisbee and other activities during lunch and after school. The majority of students who took part had not previously participated in organized school sports.

The Oregon Sports Authority Advisory Council (OSAAC) held its first annual FAST Camp at Kenton Park on August 10, providing a Fitness and Sustenance Training Camp for youth development, healthy lives and social responsibility. The camp was free to attend for boys and girls ages 12-14, who learned valuable skills to build healthy bodies, strengthen communities, and promote economies through sport.
