REPORT OF THE SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS

To the Superintending School Committee and citizens ofBridgewater:

In accordance with custom and the Laws of the State of Maine, I am pleased to submit my annual report as Superintendent of the Bridgewater Schools. The elementary schools of the town opened Septmber 30th, with an enrollment of 239 pupils which is a slight decrease from the number last year. The customary statistical chart following this report will show the teachers in their present grade placement. There were three changes in the teaching staff at the opening of the fall term. Roger Wheaton, a graduate of Aroostook State Normal School, replaced Roy Duff as principal of the Bridgewater Grammar School. Mr. Wheaton had two years of successful teaching before com ing to Bridgewater. Miss Susan Getchell replaced Miss Frances Nye in the departmental work in grades 6, 7 and 8. Miss Getchell is a graduate of Aroostook State Normal

60

School and has had one year of teaching experience. Miss Reta Ewings of Bridgewater replaced Miss Emma Sargent as teacher in the second grade.

The Boundary Line School was closed the middle of last April and the pupils conveyed to the village school. When the school was closed, there was an enrollment of only 5 pupils. Therefore, it was both uneconomical and contrary to state law to maintain his school any longer.

The pupils of grades 6, 7 and 8 have not had an opportunity for the past year to do the type of work which should have been accomplished. However, I feel that they did very well under the existing conditions. I know that it is the desire of both teachers and pupils to make up some of the lost motion, now that they are housed in the new building.

You will notice that the textbook account shows an unexpended balance. If all textbook bills were paid, there would be an overdraft o f approximately $110.00. It will be possible, next year, to apply a large part of the textbook appropriation to books for the lower grades. At the present time there is a great need for new books in the primary department.

It was necessary to overdraw the repairs account in order to make repairs on our temporary quarters. As you recall from the report last year, I suggested that the Intermediate Building should be painted. Due to the uncertainty of what was to take place, there was no appropriation made for this purpose. The need for painting this building is even greater than last year and should be done if only to apply one coat of paint.

It was a great relief to be able to m ove from our temporary quarters into the new school building. Teachers, pupils and school officials had carried on under difficult

61

Page 65: Annual Report of the Selectmen, Treasurer, Assessors and ...

conditions. I feel that the citizens of the town of Bridge- water have every right to feel proud of this new building. It is modern in every respect; it is easy to administer; it has all the advantages that parents wish their children to enjoy. I believe that the building was built with the greatest economy possible and that the people have received real value for their money.

We are fortunate in having a fine spirit of cooperation between school and town officials. Our officials work together harmoniously to maintain and improve conditions pertaining to children, teachers, parents and taxpayers of the community. I wish to express my sincere appreciation for this cooperation, for the fine attitude of the people of the community towards the schools, and the conscientious service of all our teachers, janitors, conveyance drivers and civic organizations.

Respectfully submitted,

LLOYD H. ROBINSON,Supt. of Schools

PRINCIPAL, BRIDGEWATER CLASSICAL ACADEMY

To the Board of Trustees and Citizens of Bridgewater:—

School opened October 7, 1940 with an enrollment of79 students. The enrollment by classes:

Boys Girls TotalFreshmen 9 10 19Sophomores 12 10 22Juniors 8 13 21Seniors 6 11 17

The teaching staff has undergone several changesduring this school year. The staff at the opening of school consisted of Mr. Howard Libby, Principal; Mr. Chester Parker as Coach and Miss Kathleen Duplisse, a graduate of the University of Maine as language instructor. I replaced Mr. Libby on January 8th and Mr. Parker resigned to accept a Principal’s position on February 24th. Mrs. Helene Erskine has replaced him temporarily.

On February 24th another big event in the history of the school took place, the moving into the new Academy building.

An attempt has been made to carry on all school activities as usual even though handicapped by the loss of practically all the equipment through the fire of last year.

The school book is in the process of being printed despite a loss of all mimeograph equipment. However, through the generosity of the Roberts Office Supply Co. of Portland, we are borrowing a mimeograph to carry on the yearbook work.

64

Page 68: Annual Report of the Selectmen, Treasurer, Assessors and ...

The question of our needs in the new building has been asked many times and they are many. To mention a few they are reference books, encyclopedias and dictionaries, basketball backboard and baskets, stage equipment and mimeograph.

In behalf of the teaching force and also the student body, I wish to congratulate the town upon its fine ne'vy Academ y building. We all find it such a pleasant place in which to work.

In closing, I wish to express my appreciation for the cooperation of the citizens, students and friends of the school in the short time I have been here.
