Gratitude...the perfect theme for us this year--and every year--for not a day goes by during which in some manner, a student, a colleague, a parent, or at times, even a stranger expresses gratitude for all that Gulf Stream School has provided. Primary to a school is the need to offer opportunities for students to succeed academically. Naturally,

academic vigor, the first of our Mission Statement values, is important, but on occasion, it is more essential to address the social and emotional needs of a child and his or her family. Without this sensitivity and understanding, it is unlikely that academic success will ever be achieved. With last year’s 75th anniversary celebrations behind us, this year we focused on curriculum integration and the addition to the faculty of a learning specialist. Along with our counselor, she is enabling us to efficiently address the academic, developmental, and social dimensions involved in a child’s growth. Classroom teachers continue to pursue professional development opportunities in all areas of the curriculum. Implementation of the Columbia University Reading and Writing Program in the Lower School has progressed more efficiently than anyone could imagine. Upper Schoolers are achieving in all disciplines, with recognition in advanced math courses and creative writing. A juried art show displayed the imagination and exceptional talent of students in all grade levels. Athletic success was also noted, with several championship seasons in both boys’ and girls’ sports, resulting in more banners to be displayed in the Sylvester Field House.

This year, the Blue and White Fund was introduced to replace the typical annual giving campaign. I applaud the efforts and determination of Director of Development Casey Wilson, his assistant, Wendy Zieglar, Blue and White Fund Chairs Penny and Gary Kosinski, and Lisa Morgan, Chair of the Trustee Development Committee. Their ambitious goal to streamline the fundraising efforts was met with great success by all members of the School community. Ten years ago, when attending my first Auxiliary meeting, a parent told me, “We do things the right way at this school; no cutting corners or compromises. We owe that to our students, teachers, and parents.” It didn’t take me long to realize that she was right and that I should uphold and continue the practice. Once again, we will collectively reinforce that we remain a community of learners intent on maintaining our culture of civility and honor. As we move on to the 2015-2016 school year, a committee of teachers has selected the theme Together We Are One. I believe it will solidify the School’s respect for individuals, families, and communities and the absolute need to be positive and contributing members of society. One can no longer sit on the sidelines and observe. I encourage everyone to step in, get involved, express beliefs, and work toward the common good.

Sincerely,

Joseph J. Zaluski Head of School

fourGULF STREAM SCHOOL

Dear Friends of Gulf Stream School,

It’s hard to believe that

another school year has passed,

another year of classroom activities,

Auxiliary events including a

successful golf tournament,

another year of traditions, awards,

recognitions, and another wonderful graduation. We have

had a successful year of Board meetings where we have

worked diligently to assure that the school is as financially

sound now as it has been in the past. As I watched the

year go by, I was continually amazed at the enthusiasm and

comradery not only amongst the children, but also amongst

the faculty, the staff, the parents, and the Board of Trustees.

How lucky we all are that we have such synergy and

commitment when it comes to ideas and love for the School.

Everyone is always committed to make GSS better, from the

campus to the classrooms to the housing to increasing the

faculty’s opportunity for professional development. That

synergy and love amongst our parents, alumni, and friends

took our Blue and White Fund (Annual Fund) to a new level,

raising over $370,000. Our endowment as well continues

to grow and it is the Board’s commitment to assure that

that continues. On behalf of the Board, we hope you have a

wonderful 2015-2016 school year!

School total $25,000 or more. in the Spring of 2006, the

School introduced recognition levels within the Society.

The students and faculty of Gulf Stream raised funds during the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge at the beginning of the 2014-2015 school year.

Page 16: ANNUAL REPORT OF GIVING Annu Al Repo Rt of Givin G :: 2014 ...

The fall of 2014 marked the beginning of Gulf Stream School’s

Blue and White Fund which

replaced the Annual Fund of years

past. For their fifth (and final) year,

Penny and Gary Kosinski chaired

the Committee and we are grateful

for their generosity, leadership, and

willingness to embrace this new

approach. Dedicated volunteers

hosted receptions, made personal

calls, and explained the change to parents. Video and print

materials were introduced, outlining to potential donors

detailed information about the importance of a successful

effort. Though there are many similarities between the two

methods of fundraising, the updated process was designed

to provide more structure and transparency and the results

from Year One were amazing!

• The overall dollar amount raised reached record levels.

• Parent participation reached a record high of 87%. This

was accomplished before the Winter Break!

• Three grades achieved 100% participation and every

grade was above 80%.

• Faculty, Trustees, and the Blue and White Fund

Committee reached 100% participation.

• Alumni gifts increased by almost 16%.

• Trustee giving increased by 19%.

• Faculty gifts increased by almost 20%.

As with most new endeavors, we encountered a few

unanticipated challenges and skeptics, but the Committee

was unwavering in its efforts and the above statistics reflect

the importance of that determination. Throughout the

process, we constantly discussed and carefully evaluated

every decision, diligently making notes of what worked

and what could be improved. We will continue to do

this in the years ahead and changes may follow, but as is

true of everything we do at Gulf Stream, the educational

experience and environment for the students and teachers

were and always will be our first priority.

We are very thankful to all who participated in and

volunteered for the 2014-2015 Blue and White Fund. These

gifts benefit everyone at Gulf Stream. They will have a

lasting impact on the students of today and will provide for

those who will attend in the future.

AUXILIARY ANNUAL REPORT

/// / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / /

The 2014-2015 year was back to business as usual for

the Parents’ Auxiliary. We left behind a year of celebrating

the 75th Anniversary of Gulf Stream School to begin a

year of planning many events, especially the 4th Biennial

Golf and Tennis Classic. From welcoming new families

with a breakfast in the beginning of the school year to the

Graduation Reception in June, the numerous chairs and

volunteers were busy creating successful events benefiting

students, faculty and parents. What another wonderful year

at our Little School by the Sea!

During the year, the Auxiliary was responsible for

organizing the Opening Day Coffee, Parents’ Nights, the

New Family Dinner, Photo Days, Book Fair, Founders’ Day,

The Community Service Project, Grandparents’ and Special

Friends’ Day, three Hot Lunches, the Field Day Raffle, the

Golf and Tennis Classic, the Auxiliary Luncheon, and the

Teacher Appreciation Luncheon. Along with planning these

events there were seven Auxiliary meetings and our parents

volunteered to maintain the Book Store while they also sold

DVDs for the Holiday Program and Spring Concert. Each of

these events was executed as brilliantly as those in the past.

This year the Auxiliary hosted the Golf and Tennis

Classic. The planning began in the early fall as the chairs

met weekly, building a team of volunteers dedicated

to making this event as successful as those preceding.

The underwriting was invaluable and we thank all who

participated. The gift baskets, decorations, entertainment

and the live auction were planned with great thoughtfulness.

Everyone rolled up their sleeves and gave generously of

their time and resources.

The Auxiliary is about more than events and

fundraising. It is the School’s primary organization for

bringing individuals together with the common goal of

making Gulf Stream School better. Lifelong friendships are

forged among parents as they work alongside one another.

Yes, we are a busy and productive organization, but more

importantly, the Auxiliary brings parents closer to one

another.

I look forward to exciting things in the 2015-2016

school year and am so pleased the Auxiliary Board

members will remain the same!

A school’s endowment is its hidden strength. It ensures that the school will be sustained well into the future. In present terms, it helps minimize tuition increases that might otherwise be required as educational costs rise. The National Association of Independent Schools has developed guidelines for ensuring sound schools not only in terms of academics, athletics, and character development, but also with regard to the fiscal underpinnings so essential in the support of the finest educational programs across the nation. Gulf Stream School has a healthy endowment thanks to the generosity of so many members of the Gulf Stream Family. Contributions to existing endowments are accepted regularly and added to the principal of the fund in accordance with the donors’ wishes. Naming opportunities are still available for those interested in establishing an endowed fund to honor or memorialize a student, faculty member, or family member. For more information on how to establish an endowed fund for Gulf Stream School, please contact the Development Office at (561) 276-5225.

“A strong endowment … preserves our past … protects our future … provides for our faculty … allows

greater access for all children to our educational programs … and forever strengthens Gulf Stream

School’s ability to prepare young people for successful and meaningful lives.”
