Dear alumni,All great universities have great alumni networks. This powerful concept is reflected in one of the main goals of the university’s strategic plan, the Elon Commitment, which calls on all of us to build one of the nation’s most vibrant networks of active, engaged alumni.

In 2012-13, the Elon community made significant progress toward achieving that ambitious goal. The 2013 Annual Report of Alumni Engagement, the first of its kind, captures the success of innovative new programs and meaningful engagement opportunities designed to keep alumni connected to each other and to the life of the university. This report also recognizes hundreds of alumni who have embraced their roles as Elon partners, advocates and investors. From volunteering on university boards and councils to organizing events that connect members of the Elon family, we celebrate alumni who have served their alma mater in valuable ways during the past year.

In this our 125th anniversary year, I ask you to commit to building a more robust alumni network that will help shape and steward Elon’s future. Together, we will ensure that this renowned community’s next 125 years are as successful as its first.

More than any other time in Elon’s history, our national reputation will be determined based on the extraordinary accomplishments of our alumni. Thank you for everything you do for Elon.

Fellow alumni,As president of the Elon Alumni Board, it has been my privilege to meet countless alumni who support our university with a true generosity of spirit and propel us forward as we build one of the nation’s strongest alumni networks.

My sincere thanks go to these proud Phoenix, as well as president-elect of the Elon Alumni Board, Julia Strange Chase ’84 P’13, and the entire board membership for their commitment to strengthening the ties between Elon alumni and our alma mater. So often, these alumni reconnect with Elon in an eff ort to give back, and fi nd themselves surprised at the benefi t they gain in the process.

If you have not already taken the opportunity to engage with our alma mater, I urge you to do so in the coming year. Find out for yourself what so many other alumni already know: that our relationship with Elon lasts a lifetime. Attend an event, open your professional network to students and make a gift to support the programs and experiences that make Elon the special place we all love. We are a family 30,000 strong, with a deep love for Elon bringing us together—and there has never been a better time to reclaim your place in the Elon family than now.

Sincerely,

Alumni gathered for multiple reunion events during homecoming weekend to celebrate milestones for the classes of 1962, 2002 and 2007, as well as Alpha Kappa Alpha, the Elon band and Emanons, the Elon College Fellows program, the Elon Teaching Fellows program, Kappa Alpha Order, Lambda Chi Alpha, Sigma Chi, Sigma Pi and Alpha Omicron Pi.

Throughout the year, thousands of alumni visit campus for athletic events, fall and spring convocations and Commencement. Hundreds more return to speak in classes, give presentations to campus organizations and share career advice.

STAYING INVOLVED

Alumni are one of Elon’s greatest assets, and growing alumni involvement at events across the country and on campus every year builds a stronger alumni network.

Events around the countryElon’s regional events are a great chance for alumni to reconnect with each other and the university. In 2012-13, Elon hosted 128 regional events across the nation that reached 1,659 alumni.

Every year, Elon alumni hold Welcome to the City & Alumni Network events to introduce recent graduates and other alumni new to the area to their local Elon communities. More than 591 attendees took part in 11 events across the nation to expand their social and professional networks and learn more about their local alumni programs.

Also popular was the university’s Evening for Elon series. In all, 877 guests—including 437 alumni—attended nine events in various cities featuring receptions and university updates delivered by Elon University President Leo M. Lambert, academic deans or other members of senior staff .

Elon held a special alumni family visit day on Nov. 10, 2012, off ering Phoenix families a chance to take part in a fun-fi lled day of activities and a home football game. With the recent opening of Elon’s new Martin Alumni Center, alumni now have the opportunity to coordinate personalized campus visits throughout the year by visiting elon.edu/e-web/alumni/mac.

Stay involved

Elon alumni, parents and friends reconnect with each other and hear important university updates at Evening for Elon events held throughout the year. Alison Eiff e ’09 and Alex King ’09, both New York alumni chapter board members, and former Young Alumni Council member Erica Ayala ‘08 attended an event held in New Jersey last spring.

Every fall, the Charleston alumni chapter takes part in Elon’s Welcome to the City event series. These events, held in cities across the nation, introduce recent graduates and other alumni who have recently moved to their local Elon networks.

In addition to professional networking and lifelong learning opportunities, Elon’s regional chapters and clubs also organize activities for alumni to expand their social networks. Members of Elon’s Triad chapter formed an intramural kickball team last year.

Elon added fi ve new alumni clubs in the last year, giving nearly 1,000 alumni in Louisville, Ky., Orlando, Fla., Pittsburgh, Pa., Seattle, Wash., and Tampa Bay, Fla. new opportunities to engage.

TELLING THE ELON STORY

Elon alumni do great things for their communities and in their careers, raising the university’s profile at the local and national level.

Rise Up and ServeA growing number of alumni continue the Elon tradition of serving others every April during the university’s month of service.

Chapters and clubs organized volunteer efforts in 2013 that impacted 13 cities across the nation through 16 volunteer events, up from nine events in 2012.

Alumni participation increased by nearly 50 percent from 125 volunteers to 183 this year.

Alumni who were unable to participate in events hosted by chapters and clubs organized their own volunteer events, with 42 alumni attending 27 individual events.

EXPANDING THE ELON NETWORK

Elon’s vast network of professional connections continues to thrive and benefit both alumni and students alike, fueled by alumni who offer career advice, job leads and business contacts.

National Networking WeekElon’s first National Networking Day held in January 2012 became National Networking Week in 2013, with the university sponsoring 15 regional events in January designed to connect alumni to Elon’s professional network and the Student Professional Development Center. Attendance increased by 26 percent over 2012, with 638 total attendees this year.

Destination Next events and internship send-off receptiotnMore than 100 students and alumni took part in Elon’s Destination Next events and the annual internship send-off reception. Both events put students embarking on internships or considering moves to various cities in touch with Elon alumni living in those areas.

The Elon NetworkElon’s Office of Alumni Engagement and the Student Professional Development Center continue their partnership to provide career support for alumni. The Elon Network group on LinkedIn makes it easy for alumni to grow their professional networks, and several outlets for career support are available to alumni through Elon’s Office of Career Services.

Alumni who join The Elon Network on LinkedIn can tap into a valuable resource for professional connections.

Users in Elon’s online networking group on LinkedIn, The Elon Network, nearly doubled in 2012–13, from less than 2,800 members in June 2012 to more than 5,300 users at the end of May 2013.

GIVING ANNUALLY

Alumni who invest in Elon every year make an immediate impact on the student experience. These gifts sustain the best of Elon: quality academics, student scholarships, outstanding faculty, premier facilities and distinctive learning opportunities such as study abroad, service learning and undergraduate research.

Alumni participationThis valuable measure of alumni pride factors into Elon’s national rankings and more importantly, supports the programs and experiences that make an Elon education one of a kind. Elon’s alumni giving rate reached 21 percent this year, up from 19 percent in 2011-12, with alumni investing nearly $3 million in the university.

In 2012-13 a total of 5,439 alumni made gifts to reach 21 percent alumni giving participation.

Pave The WayElon’s brick campaign for alumni was a resounding success. The campaign raised almost $300,000 for Elon’s greatest needs, and more than 2,300 alumni took the opportunity to reserve bricks at Elon’s new Martin Alumni Center and leave lasting legacies on campus.

The Elon Society265 alumni donors were recognized in 2012-13 as part of The Elon Society. Overall, this premier annual giving society included 990 parents, alumni, grandparents, friends, and others who gave $1,500 or more to Elon last year.

INVESTING IN ELON

Alumni volunteers working with the following groups

encouraged others to invest in Elon

during 2012-13.

Class and affi nity reunion volunteersClass and affi nity reunions are exciting opportunities to rekindle old friendships and relive college memories. The alumni listed below made Elon’s 2012 reunions truly successful. These volunteers encouraged fellow alumni to participate in reunion giving eff orts, which benefi t students across campus, and planned events at Homecoming Weekend 2012 that brought classmates and fellow alumni together to celebrate their shared milestones.

Elon University President Emeritus J. Earl Danieley ‘46 has supported his alma mater with an annual gift for more than 50 years. He and many fellow alumni donors are part of The 1889 Society, a new giving society that honors alumni for the vital role their support has played in Elon’s 125-year history. Visit Elon’s new campus home for alumniAs part of the Elon Commitment, the university’s 10-year strategic plan, a building in the heart of campus has been committed as a new gathering space for alumni. A generous gift from Elon parents Chris ’78 and Nicolette Martin supported full renovation of the facility.

The Martin Alumni Center opened at the corner of Haggard and N. O’Kelly avenues this fall as a resource for all alumni and their guests during campus visits.
