MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
The Malaysian English Language Teaching Association has made great strides since its
inception as the Selangor English Language Teaching Association in 1958 and later
being renamed as the Malaysian English Language Teaching Association in 1982.
Since 1982, three presidents have led the association, Dr. Basil Wijasuriya, Prof.
Hyacinth Gaudart and Prof. Malachi Edwin Vethamani. In all the triumphs achieved by
MELTA in 2019, we also experienced immense sadness on the demise of our first
president, Dr. Basil Wijasuriya.
Sustaining a not for profit professional organization run by volunteers for 61 years has
not been easy any of the leaders and leadership teams that have served MELTA. Yet
MELTA has epitomized how a voluntary organization should be managed so that it is
able to bring big and wide-ranging impact to English language Education in Malaysia
and regionally. As we take stock of the range of MELTA activities undertaken in 2019, it
is hard to imagine these activities have been achieved by one voluntary professional
organization.
In 2019 the Malaysian English Language Teaching Association (MELTA) continued to
undertake a wide range of activities supported by its vision and mission to be the
leading Malaysian education professional organization. Based on a strategic plan to
provide a comprehensive set of activities that benefit practicing teachers, academics,
students, parents and corporate organizations, MELTA achievements in 2019 is yet
again remarkable in many ways.
PROF DR GANAKUMARAN SUBRAMANIAM PRESIDENT, MELTA

MELTA contributes to English Language Education (ELE) in Malaysia through
its research and development initiatives. Its mission is to be a centre of
excellence for research in ELE. In line with this, the Research and
Development Bureau works to advance knowledge in ELE theory and
practice. This is achieved by organising and administering various research
and collaborative opportunities for the professional development of
practitioners, learners and language enthusiasts. In the past year, MELTA has
provided platforms for both novice and experienced researchers to present
their work and connect with the wider ELE community through its annual
MELTA International Research Conference in English Language Education
(MIRCELE). The one-day event provides a platform for researchers to
discuss their work in relation to both theories and practice. The bureau also
undertakes research activities, and has recently embarked on a study to
explore the themes and trends in Malaysia ELT Research over the last 20
years. The bureau is also working towards a publication on 21st century ELT
practices under the MELTA-Sasbadi publication series.
The Bureau welcomes R&D Consultancy Services for the evaluation of
education products and any other educational research endeavours in line
with the aim of spearheading and supporting the advancement of English
Language Education. Interested organisations may submit proposals for the
improvement and development of educational products to the MELTA R&D
bureau. We aim to promote the borderless transfer of knowledge to all
parties.

The Bureau, in the beginning of 2019 had a few interested parties inquiring
about training and workshop. One of the activities for 2019 was a MUET
workshop conducted for the Royal Military College IB students. It was a one-
day workshop from 8.30 a.m. to 4.00 p.m. The aim was to prepare them for
the MUET.
Towards the end of 2019, MELTA has submitted a proposal at the request of
the Sarawak government to train and improve the English proficiency of its
mathematics and science teachers. MELTA is collaborating with Sasbadi on
this project. The project should commence in early 2020.
Bureau Highlights
The bureau should develop annual training programmes and run at least
three MELTA workshops working independently or in collaboration with other
bureaus such as the Special Projects, or Chapters Bureaus. The bureau
should also develop partnerships with government agencies to provide
teacher training programmes.

through applications such as Facebook Live. This will enable MELTA
members and followers who are not able to attend to be part of the events
organised. Polls were also used on Facebook to get followers to engage with
current issues related to English language education. The MELTA corporate
video has been updated with additional information such as updated images
and background music. As part of publicity, posters were designed to
promote and highlight key events during the conferences. These posters
were uploaded on Facebook and the conferences’ official website. The official
MELTA website is currently under maintenance. Previously, the website used
Joomla as its server host and it is being migrated to Wordpress for an easier

Moving Forward
The MELTA Chapters Bureau is now looking forward to the official launch
of MELTA Kelantan Chapter and Johor Chapter in 2020. At same time
much efforts will directed to establishment of similar MELTA Chapters in
Perlis, Kedah, Negeri Sembilan , Selangor. The data of teachers and
students being provided opportunities for betterment, to advance, to
enhance by these Chapters speaks volumes of the value of these
Chapters and their dedicate Committees.
The MELTA Chapters Bureau also look forward to more Chapters being
established in the states of Pahang, Sabah and Sarawak, as the vastness,
distances and travel time within these states warrants the need for
Chapters to be established to enable active teacher/educator support
systems to get going.

PENANG CHAPTER
OVERVIEW
The Melta Penang Chapter, (formerly Melta Seberang Jaya) was established in 2003 by the

foundation upon which these English Language teachers could keep abreast with the latest trends
in ELT. Today Melta Penang is committed to achieving the goals of MELTA Malaysia under the
President, Professor Dr. Ganakumaran Subramaniam. Mrs. Laysee is now the new Chapter

KUCHING CHAPTER
OVERVIEW
Kuching Chapter has came a long way with a very successful event back in 2011 - Asia-TEFL
which has left lasting impression among EL practitioners. Last year, an attempt to revive Kuching
Chapter to its more glorious days was done through the set up of a very small committee of 5
members to form a Chapter committee.
These five committee members are Ms Faith Wong (PPD Kuching), Ms Rebecca Chieng (Kids
Speak), Ms Hazelynn Rymbar (MESTR), Ms Aida Izam Bujang (PPD Sri Aman) and Ms
Magdalene Muuk (SMK Tebakang). They share the same vision and passion for English
language education and practices in the state.
The first meeting was conducted over coffee in Kuching International Airport where one of the
members had to fly out for official duty right after the brief meet. It is said a thousand miles begin
with a first step, and this first step is almost impossible without great support from the MELTA
Committee.
Subsequently, this new committee had the privilege to collaborate with Kuching Polytechnic in
conducting the Way With Words Competition for Borneo English Language Festival (5th - 8th
September 2018) where Dr Cheah (Director of Special Projects) and Ms Chandrakala (Director of
Chapters) had flown in to conduct training for the committee members. The committee members
were mentored and shadowed the trainers during the competition. This gradual revival of
Kuching Chapter in 2018 paved way to the 28th MELTA International Conference on 13th - 15th
August 2019 at Riverside Majestic Kuching.
Prior to the conference, chapter committee had meetings with the main committee and was
assisted in many ways to be the local contact for the conference. Some of the meetings include
the Director of Sarawak State Education Department, Dr Haji Azhar, CEO of Sarawak Arts
Council, Mr Sharkawi Amit, Director of IPG Batu Lintang, Mr Jamiran Salam, Director of IPG Tun
Abdul Razak, Ms Anis Abdullah, MESTR and Chief Minister's Office. Kuching Chapter has since
grown bigger with new committee members onboard recently - Mr Jarod Yong Jik Kam and Ms
Kartina Sahari. It is hoped that Kuching Chapter can continue to thrive and grow sustainably in
the coming years.
