3ALS Society of BC 2014 Annual Report

It has been both a privilege and honour to serve as President of the ALS Society of BC, and something I wish extended beyond a two-year tenure with this last year in particular being such an amazing time to be part of the ALS community in a leadership role.
This past summer the ALS #IceBucketChallenge took the world by storm, and for many changed the reality of ALS – a disease that before the social media phenomenon was largely unknown except by those directly in its shadow. With the generosity of more than 260,000 Canadians, ALS Societies across Canada are now able to inject $26 million into the ALS community over the next three years, with $20 million directly dedicated to research.
The unexpected awareness has fostered unprecedented provincial, national and global advocacy that gives us the opportunity engage our local community to further support necessary programs that deliver critical services to British Columbians living with ALS.
Importantly, despite the amazing success resulting from the #IceBucketChallenge, ALS is not yet a treatable disease. We need to build from the recent awareness to ensure that we can continue to raise necessary funds to provide the much needed programs that are core to our Society. More patients
are being diagnosed daily, and the cost of equipment and critical services increase every year. Until there is a cure, we cannot afford to let up.
Our Society is able to provide meaningful service and sup-port to our community because of the amazing management team, staff and volunteers who make sacrifices every day for the greater good. I would like to thank everyone for their hard work in making “TEAM ALS BC & Yukon” the driving force behind the momentum we have built over the years, and encourage you to foster the awareness with others to focus on those who need it most.
It has been an honour to serve as your President for the past two years, and I thank you for the opportunity to be part of such an amazing, passionate community. I look forward taking a new role with the Society, and working with the in-coming board to build from where we are today to make sure we can deliver our core services to the best of our abilities to improve the quality of life for those affected by ALS, and one day make this a treatable disease.

2014 was a very busy year for the ALS Society of BC and I am pleased to share some of the exciting developments that have taken place over the last 12 months.
Prior to the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge event, we were chal-lenged to raise awareness about ALS, and funds to increase our support to ALS research. These challenges were literally ‘washed away’ in August 2014. A new era of hope has begun.
In 2012 the ALS Society of BC established a 5 year goal to raise an additional $2 million for ALS research. A five year strategic plan was developed to achieve this goal with-out compromising our quality of life services provided to people affected by ALS in BC and the Yukon. We focused on maintaining and expanding revenues from existing fundraising events, especially the Walks for ALS campaign. Compared to 2012, walk revenues have increased by 19%. We put greater emphasis on developing our planned giving campaign and establishing new partnerships. Miraculously, the funds from the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge donated in BC & Yukon donors totalled over $2 million. Our board elected to designate this revenue to ALS research (see Ice Bucket Challenge report). Our goal set in 2012 has been achieved for now. New ways to provide support to people affected by ALS are being reviewed.
Looking at past ALS patient priority surveys, the need to better support family caregivers has been consistent. With
this in mind our new goal has been established; to provide greater support for family caregivers. A pilot program will be launched in 2015 to look at how we can accomplish and sustain this new service. With continued support from our volunteers, donors and partners I am confident this goal can be achieved.
In British Columbia we are extremely fortunate to have what we believe to be the best ALS specialists in the world caring for our clients at the ALS Centre at GF Strong Rehab Hospital. Our partnership with the Centre is crucial to pro-viding the best quality of care service for people affected by ALS in BC.
We are proud of the spirit that drives our efforts – TEAM ALS BC & Yukon. These amazing volunteers work with us to raise funds to provide the many support programs we offer keeping administration costs to less than 15%. There is a quote that reads, “the world is hugged by the faithful arms of volunteers.” It is an honour to work with our team everyday of the year.
Thank you to everyone for your contributions to support people affected by ALS.

Our Victoria Chapter Living with ALS Support Group monthly meet-ings from September to June keep our members connected and able to access our services. The support group program

• TheThriftyFoodsSmileCardProgramcoordinatedbyJoanne McLeod raised $964; and
• Thesaleof“potscrubbies”createdbySusanMonaghanraised $600.
I would be remiss to omit mentioning the outstanding success of the Ice Bucket Challenge which has raised awareness world-wide and heartened those clients and families facing ALS.
We currently have 31 patients in our area. In 2014, there were twelve new clients while nine clients passed. We are currently supporting four families in the region whose family member with ALS lives elsewhere. We also lost three outstanding volunteers who passed in 2014.
The provincial office continues to be very supportive of our Chapter. The staff regularly attend our meetings and we enjoy welcoming them and strengthening the connection between the clients, families and the Richmond office.
I am very appreciative of the “family” that I am proud to be a member of here in Victoria – a family of volunteers dedi-cated to supporting those impacted by ALS, to increasing awareness, and to raising funds to support client services and research.
Joyanne plewes president, Victoria Chapter
Support Group Meetings are a special time to gather. We try to meet every second month and either have a speaker of interest or a topic of interest that all can par-ticipate in. We provide
information to people living with ALS including helpful hints and items that may make life easier.
People living with ALS and their caregivers can speak on new ideas and things that have helped them personally in their journey that they can share with the group.
Our Annual Walk is the second Sunday in June at City Hall
in Parksville. Over $40,000 was raised last year. These funds are used for patient services and research.
We work to increase ALS awareness and increase funding.
We host and attend the ALS Mobile Clinic in Nanaimo each year with a team from the ALS Centre at GF Strong. The team meets with 5 or 6 families in our area when travel be-comes difficult.
NCIC supports 30–35 people living with ALS at any given time.
I feel fortunate to work with this Society. They are all won-derful people!

ONALSRESEARCHINCANADA–In2014,18applica-tions for discovery grants were received, which was far more than ever received in a single competition. It was also the first time we have had our Discovery Grants reviewed by our International Peer Review Panel, a group of seven ALS experts from the United States and Europe.
This also marks the first grants named in the partnership with Brain Canada as a result of the funds from the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge.
The summer of 2014, with a bucket, ice and water ALS – a disease that before the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge was largely unknown. Funds received from the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge are enabling the ALS Societies across Canada to inject $26 mil-lion into the ALS community over the next three years. I’m writing to show my support for the ALS Society of BC Transportation program. my dad was diagnosed with ALS two years ago and it’s been very tough for my family and I since. We are so thankful for the ALS Society of BC for all the support they have been able to provide us with, especially with transportation. my dad is in an electric wheelchair and we do not have a vehicle that is able to transport him in so we were so grateful when we heard that the ALS Society provides transportation that is able to accommodate my dad in his electric wheelchair. my dad lives in Surrey and my brother and I live in Vancouver, almost all my dad’s doctor’s appointments are in Vancouver so it’s helped us a lot that he is able to get transportation to Vancouver and its really helped with the relief of the financial burden that we are already facing with his disease. Again, we are so thankful that the ALS Society of BC is able provide the transportation program and we don’t know what we would do without it!

“The ALS Society of BC monthly donation programme is an efficient and effective way to support families struggling with ALS. Any volunteering or family assistance we can provide in addition to the monthly donation adds to our commitment; however, life does seem busy at times. This way, we are sure that our on-going support is consistent.” —Pat and Tracy einarson (monthly donor)
