INTRODUCTION

DURING EACH SESSION AT PENLAND we wander through the studios and witness indi-vidual and collective moments of joy and exhilaration, concentration and dialogue, struggle and accomplishment as the creative process unfolds. Making something new is always challenging for artists young or old, experienced or fledgling, as they tackle the unknown and discover new techniques, new ways of working, and new ways of thinking. It is certainly a thrill and a privilege to talk with students about what they are making and see their growth and progress under the guidance of Penland’s instructors. Consider the class with Arno Rafael Minkkinen, who asked his students to focus on rul-ing out what not to do so they could be inspired to invent what they had yet to discov-er. He was describing how to compose a photograph but could have just as easily been talking about designing a piece of jewelry or doing preliminary sketches for a painting.

Encouraging each other to step outside our zone of comfort is what we do best. In fiscal year 2014 we did this through 138 classes that served 1407 students and were led by instructors from the U.S. and 14 countries. We also encouraged creative stretching through special programs like the glass/iron/wood residency that brought twenty-eight artists together for a week in January, 2014, and gave them time to learn from each other and experiment with new ideas. Master printer and entrepreneur Phil Sanders led the “Business Time” workshop that gave core fellows, resident artists, and studio coordinators a chance to spend time exploring professional practices. Our 2013 writer-in-residence, anthropologist Emilia Ferraro, embedded herself in Jason Pollen’s textile class to experience first-hand new surface design techniques that would rein-force her academic understanding of the relationship between anthropology, sustain-ability, and craft. In turn she drew fascinating connections for the community in her lecture on the relationship between craft and economic anthropology. (See page 24.)

We challenged ourselves organizationally through the work of our marketing task force led by trustee Tom Oreck. With the help of outside experts, we investigated Penland’s communications messages and vehicles, grew our presence on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and Pinterest. The voice of our blog and newsletter shifted with

Orly Olivier showing off a series of posters she made at Penland during the 2014 winter residency in the print and letterpress studios. Orly is a pho-tographer and the artistic director at Heart of Los Angeles (HOLA), which provides free academic, art, and ath-letic programs to underserved youth. Orly’s parents were Tunisian; the posters refer to Tunisian cooking and include the logo of Orly’s food blog, Petit Takett, which was the name of her grandmother’s restaurant.

INTRODUCTION

the help of poet and Penland’s marketing associate, Elaine Bleakney. As communica-tion tools expand, we are investigating the best ways to maintain the diversity of our program participants, from graduating high school students and college-aged people to professionals and retirees, from millennials to baby boomers. We also continued our work with Haystack, Arrowmont, Peters Valley, and Pilchuck to strengthen the marketing and national awareness of craft workshop schools—an effort that included gathering at Penland and test marketing our advertising campaign. This joint project was launched at SOFA Chicago in November, 2014.

We extended our educational reach through Penland tours to Arkansas, Oaxaca, and Cuba. Seventy-three participants in these tours visited studios of major interna-tional artists, met curators and community cultural leaders, visited museums and his-toric sites, and joined in hands-on workshops. We stayed in the Bentonville, Arkansas 21C Hotel, which is filled with contemporary art. In Oaxaca, we dyed fabric using local techniques and made our own corn tortillas in a cooking school, and, in rural Cuba, we danced with local children at a community center.

Since our campus master plan was first developed in 1999, we have been planning to expand Penland’s walking trails. Trail Dynamics was hired to build a 1.8-mile trail to the top of Otter Knobs. The trail was named in honor of deep ecologist, neighbor, and friend Paulus Berensohn and dedicated on his eightieth birthday in May, 2013. A meditative and welcoming shelter and bench was designed and constructed by John Clark and Zander Ellenbogen. It was installed in the fall of 2013 with the help of John Clark’s concentration students and Richard Prisco’s Appalachian State University stu-dents. There’s no direct vehicle access to the site, so the volunteers had to carry the structure in sections about two-hundred yards through the woods.

Notable among other facilities improvements is the new drawing/painting/books studio, which was designed by Cannon Architects and will be named for the Samuel L. Phillips Family Foundation. Construction on the studio began May, 2014, and will be completed in time for summer 2015 workshops.

In the pages to follow, we share many of the stories and accomplishments of the fiscal year that ended April 30, 2014. Thank you for being with us and behind us all the way! Your support enables Penland to be an extraordinary place that expands imagination and challenges each of us to be more, share more, and learn more than we thought possible. Jean W. WORKSHOPS

AT THE ROOT OF THE PENLAND EXPERIENCE ARE WORKSHOPS that are open to stu-dents at various levels of skill and encourage serious engagement with materials and processes. Our instructors—full-time studio artists, educators, and college and uni-versity faculty—create Penland workshops where students immerse themselves in learning for one, two, or eight weeks. In Penland workshops, experimentation is a given, and being a student is an intensive creative experience.

During fiscal year 2014, Penland instructors taught eight-week concentration work-shops in book arts, surface design in clay, small-scale metal design, narrative photog-raphy, vacuum-press techniques in the wood studio, handbuilding clay, traditional and alternative processes in hot glass, thermodynamic design in iron, animated letterpress, personal woven cartography, and woodworking with discarded and found wood.

One hundred and five summer workshops featured instructors from the U.S., Australia, India, Israel, and Japan, with a surprising number of workshops focused on kinetics: mechanisms and microcontrollers in metals, a robotic Pinewood Derby workshop in the wood studio, and a workshop in which simple machinery gave motion to furniture, sculpture, and wearable objects. There were also classes in shoemak-ing, time-based digital media, Ukiyo-e printmaking, three-dimensional paper forms, basketry, agrarian toolmaking, using Japanese textile traditions in contemporary art, pewtersmithing, the summer-appropriate Sea Life through Boroscilate Glass, glass goblets, a “low-fire adventure” in clay, woodfiring strategies, and so much more.

WORKSHOPS

A broad spectrum of techniques, workshop content, ways to honor craft traditions, and ways to innovate—all of these elements come into play as Penland workshops are developed by instructors in consultation with Leslie Walker Noell, Penland’s program director. Penland’s workshops are as diverse as the instructors who teach them. The particular philosophies of instructors shine through the class descriptions they write. Rory Sparks, in describing her workshop combining animation and let-terpress, explained that “inspiration will come from Marcel Duchamp’s film, Anémic Cinéma, Bruno Manari’s useless machines, and, of course, Eadweard Muybridge.” And instructor Matthew Szösz wrote, “glass will be our primary material, but we’ll define ‘material’ as broadly as possible.”

RESIDENT ARTISTS

THE YEAR 2013 MARKED THE FIFTIETH ANNIVERSARY OF PENLAND’S RESIDENT ARTIST

PROGRAM. Founded by Bill Brown, the program has evolved from an idea to an inte-gral and exciting element of Penland life. Penland resident artists set up shop in an open studio culture, living and working at the school for three years. During this time, they develop their practice, make a living from their work, and build an independent life in craft.

In October of 2013, Penland Gallery director and former resident artist Kathryn Gremley curated The Barns Studios 2013, an exhibit of work by current Penland res-idents at the Asheville Area Arts Council in the River Arts District. The 2013 resi-dent artists were David Eichelberger (clay), Micah Evans (glass), Dustin Farnsworth (sculpture), Robin Johnston (textiles), Rachel Meginnes (textiles), and Tom Shields (sculpture).

In celebration of fifty years of Penland resident artists—over fifty of whom have settled permanently in the Penland area following their residencies—Kathryn Gremley also compiled a directory of former residents on our website. It can be found at penland.org/programs/resident_fiftieth.html.

Resident artist Micah Evans. “I came to this residency with the

goal of switching the emphasis of my work from design to more conceptual fine art,” says Micah.

“As the years passed, the time in between large projects allowed me to approach my design ideas from a different direction. Surprisingly, part of what I learned in this residency was my love for design and that process. I came into the residency to work on my art and am leaving more confident and happy as a designer. Three years is a long time, the per-fect amount of time to find myself as an artist. Thanks, Penland.”

CORE FELLOWS

“GROOVY, FIERCE, HOT ROCKETS,” IS HOW ONE OF PENLAND’S FACEBOOK FANS

RECENTLY DESCRIBED OUR CORE FELLOWS. Core fellows live and work at Penland for two years. During this time they take a dizzying number of workshops, work on the grounds and in the kitchen, mastermind events and slideshows, and engage daily with staff, students, instructors, and visitors. All this while creating their own work, which they exhibit each October in a show presented at Northlight. In February of 2014, five fully-fledged core fellows flew the coop: Zee Boudreaux, Liz Koerner, Mike Krupiarz, Rachel Mauser, and Molly Kite Spadone, making way for five new core fellows: Jamie Karolich, Joshua Kovarik, Meghan Martin, Emily Rogstad, and Tyler Stoll. The new five moved into Morgan Hall with second year core fellows Audrey Bell, Sarah Rachel Brown, Angela Eastman, and Will Lentz.

Core fellow Mike Krupiarz blowing glass. During his two years in the program, Mike made excellent functional and sculptural work in glass, wood, and several other media.

Core fellow Sarah Rachel Brown in the metals studio. Before she came to Penland, Sarah apprenticed with jeweler and former core fellow Sarah Loertscher. Like all core fellows, she had to navigate the challenge of bal-ancing her work for the school, her classes, and the demands of regular life. “I love it here at Penland,” she said. “Sometimes you do feel like it’s everyone else’s escape while it’s your reality. That can be kind of hard because you’re balancing paying bills and doing your laundry while everyone else is staying up all night in the studio and not thinking about anything but their work for days at a time. But it is kind of a paradise. I don’t know where I’ll live again where I’m surrounded by mountains and I have state-of-the-art studios at my fingertips whenever I want them. It’s a pretty special and incredible experience.”

SCHOLARSHIPS

SCHOLARSHIPS HELP PENLAND BUILD STRONG CONNECTIONS, bringing a new and returning population that might not otherwise be able to afford the time and expense of workshops. Close to half of the students who took Penland workshops in fiscal year 2014 did so with some form of assistance.

Two hundred and seventy-six students received work-study scholarships. Eighty-nine students received full scholarships. One hundred and sixty were studio assistants. Seventy students who live near the school took advantage of stand-by discounts. Through an ongoing relationship with the Thomas S. Kenan Institute for the Arts, ten recent graduates of the University of North Carolina School of the Arts received full scholarships to attend a summer workshop at Penland. Twenty-nine scholarships were awarded with partial support from colleges and universities as part of the Higher Education Partnership. And during fiscal year 2014, five new annually funded schol-arships were created.

“I am always surprised at how long and short the time feels here on the hill,” wrote work-study scholarship student Ruth Easterbrook, who took David Eichelberger’s eight-week spring clay workshop. “I have done months’ worth of learning and grow-ing, but it only feels like yesterday that I arrived. I left my routine, home and job to be here and make the leap toward taking myself more seri-ously as an artist. I have surrounded myself with people who are equally trying to find their way. I find it comforting that I am not alone in the unknown that comes with trying to find your path as a young artist. I am also constantly inspired by Penland’s instructors, studio assis-tants, resident artists, and the pot-ters of the area. They give me hope, courage, and living proof that what I want to accomplish is attainable.”

COMMUNITY COLLABORATIONS

ARTS EDUCATION EXTENDS INTO THE COMMUNITY thanks to an ongoing partnership with the Mitchell County public schools. Penland’s Teaching Artist Initiative creates relationships with local classroom teachers, working with them to integrate arts into the schools. In fiscal year 2014, 457 students in third, fourth, and ninth grades expe-rienced twelve to fifteen hours of making books with content related to subjects they were exploring and studying in the classroom.

In the spring of 2014, students at Mayland Early College worked with Penland teaching artist intern Rachel Mauser and teacher Melora Bennett to make books in a workshop guided by a family culture research project curriculum. Rachel and sculptor Lisa Clague also led letterpress printing and clay workshops for high school students as part of the Professional Craft Study Program.

Subs with SuitCASES (Creative Approaches to Substitute Education), another Penland community initiative, strengthened and sustained its mission of placing arts-oriented subs with creative lesson plans in the classroom.

Penland Kids Camp served 151 kids in 13 classes. Forty-two children received schol-arships, and no applicant was turned away if space was available. Scholarship students were also assisted by Centro Latino, Safeplace Women’s Shelter, and Communities in the Schools when transportation, meals, or language assistance was needed.

Penland’s annual community open house took place on March 1, 2014—it’s a free event that brought 560 guests and 125 volunteers to Penland’s studios. Past core fellows Andi Steele and Geoff Calabrese brought a group of students from University of North Carolina-Wilmington to volunteer, and pastepaper made by visitors was donated to Blue Ridge Regional Hospital to become part of a project of the Healing Arts Collaboration. Penland also took a lead in putting on Fire on the Mountain, the much-anticipated regional blacksmithing festival.

“I want kids to find out they are more than they thought they were,” says Meg Peterson speaking about her years of experience in local classrooms as the artist and teacher driving Penland’s Teaching Artist Initiative. She notes that working with handmade books and journal-ing gives students from elementary grades to high school a new place to inhabit. “It connects kids to their interiority, which is so important. I see how my students behave in their books. Making these books is a pow-erful experience. They need it.”

Scott made the compo-nents of the bench the day before during a one-day workshop at Penland. After the festival it was installed in Spruce Pine.

SPECIAL PROGRAMS

PENLAND’S SPECIAL PROGRAMS bring fresh ideas, voices, and hands into the Penland studios. During the winter of 2014, Penland developed and hosted a glass, iron, and wood residency. Funded by the John and Robyn Horn Foundation, the residency focused on experimental research and collaboration in Penland’s glass, iron, and wood studios. Fourteen Penland affiliated artists were invited. In turn, each of these fourteen artists invited another artist who had never been to Penland before. These twenty-eight participated in a winter week of lively dialogue and spontaneity, hosting demonstrations open to the Penland community and ‘commuting’ from studio to stu-dio according to interest, imagination, and drive.

Penland’s Winter Print and Letterpress Residency program received a record number of applications for 2014. Twenty resident artists and writers were selected to spend two weeks during January working on special projects with guidance from lead printmaker Diane Fine and lead letterpress printer Kathy Kuehn.

In June of 2013, Dr. Emilia Ferraro arrived at Penland as the fourth recipient of the Andrew Glasgow Writers Residency. An Italian anthropologist, Ferraro explores the connections between craft, sustainability, and anthropology in her research. For more on her Penland visit, see page 24.

Also in June, the United States Artists board of trustees met in Asheville and spent part of their meeting at Penland. United States Artists is a national nonprofit organiza-tion that recognizes and supports artists. Their board members toured the school and then conducted an open conversation with Penland’s resident artists and artists from the surrounding community to discuss how the organization could better serve the needs of artists. The visit was arranged by Asheville resident Andrew Glasgow, who is a United States Artists trustee and a long-time friend of Penland.

Artist, master printer, publisher, creative services consultant, and nonprofit arts administrator Phil Sanders was at Penland in January to teach a week-long class called Business Time. “The workshop came out of a conversation I had with [former program director] Dana Moore several years ago,” Phil explained. “I developed this class for artists at Penland. I wrote the course book based on my strategic planning process for any business. It does not matter if it is a sole pro-prietorship or a thousand-employee company, every business needs the same things. Writers get editors, big companies get CFOs, and artists get each other—which is great for living a creative life, but not so good for business. I treat each student like a client. This course provides artists with an editor and CFO.”

This group of artists spent a week at Penland in the winter of 2014 working separately and collaboratively in the glass, iron, and wood studios. The residency was funded by the John and Robyn Horn Foundation.

ARCHIVES

IN JULY OF 2013, PENLAND RECEIVED A GIFT of 132 works of art from the collection of Bill and Jane Brown. Bill was Penland’s director from 1962–1983. While he and his wife, Jane, were at Penland, they were given many works by students, instructors, residents, core fellows, and artists in the community. Of the 132 donated works, 38 will remain in Penland’s archives as examples of the life of the school during that time period. The pieces reflect relationships forged between the Browns and artists involved in the school’s programs as well as the kind of experimentation with materials and processes that took place during those years. The remaining works will be placed in school housing and the Pines, or offered for sale through the benefit auction and scholarship auctions.

Jasmin McFayden, assistant to the director, worked with staff and community mem-bers as well as Jane Brown and her son Bill to identify and catalog the works. Included in the gift is a dress made for Jane Brown by Louise Todd Cope from fabric woven by the Penland Weavers. A glass platter, identified by Mark Peiser as a demonstration piece by Roland Jahn, represents early work made in Penland’s glass studio. Examples of Cynthia Bringle’s work show her steady hand and commitment to functional ceram-ics over many years. Other representative works are by instructors Karen Karnes, Walter Nottingham, Mary Walker Phillips, Don Drumm, and Jon Brooks.

These pieces open a window into a significant time in Penland’s history—a time when the national craft community was growing and evolving rapidly. They are mementos of a vibrant network of artists built through the leadership of Bill and Jane Brown and are a welcome enhancement to the Penland archives.

These two vessels—the ceramic is by Norm Schulman and the glass by Robert Barber—are part of the collection given to the Penland archive by Jane Brown, who was married to and worked closely with Penland's second director, Bill Brown.

This decorated ceramic platter by Judith Cornell was part of the gift from the Brown collection.

GALLERY AND VISITORS CENTER

THE PENLAND GALLERY AND VISITORS CENTER, located in historic Horner Hall, hosted five Focus Gallery exhibitions in 2013 and offered work for sale by Penland instructors, resident artists, and students. Gallery director Kathryn Gremley also curated an exhi-bition by Penland resident artists at the Asheville Area Arts Council, celebrating fifty years of the Resident Artist Program. (See page 6.)

The Focus Gallery space is used primarily for single artist exhibitions. It is pro-grammed to highlight a range of craft media and also encourage sales for the individual artists. The exhibitions have featured emerging and established artists making functional and decorative work.

Behind the scenes, Kathryn and her staff planned for an extensive renovation to Horner Hall, anticipating a temporary move to Penland’s main campus while the Gallery undergoes renovation in 2015. A new special exhibition space, a visitor cen-ter gallery featuring Penland’s craft history, updated sales gallery spaces, an outdoor sculpture garden, and an improved entrance drive will all be part of the new Horner.

The Penland Gallery also expanded its web presence to include an online shop launched in March of 2014. At penland.org/shop, visitors can view works for sale from the gallery collection, the Focus exhibitions, special collections, and other features.

The gallery counted 9,120 visitors in fiscal year 2014. Work by 207 artists was fea-tured in the gallery, generating sales of $294,416. The gallery offered 65 tours of the campus, welcoming a total of 488 individuals.

FACILITIES

IN FISCAL YEAR 2014, PENLAND’S FACILITIES AND GROUNDS CREW replaced, rehabili-tated, removed, improved, repainted, refinished, planted, and refreshed the campus—and then some.

The design for the new books, drawing, and painting studio went through some necessary modifications with Cannon Architects. Ratio Architects completed design development for the new Northlight complex, which will house photography and papermaking studios and a social hall. Architect Jim Smith and engineers completed a schematic design for extensive renovations to the Pines. The renovation and expan-sion of historic Horner Hall entered the design development phase with architect Dail Dixon. This project includes remodeling the gallery on the ground floor, creating a new exhibition space on the north side of the building, converting the second floor into office spaces, and extensive changes to the landscape.

The facilities and grounds crew also completed a mind-boggling array of projects including interior repairs, safety improvements, exterior restorations, grounds prepa-ration for construction of the new drawing, painting, and books studios, and a tremen-dous amount of seasonal grounds work, including a festive Earth Day garden planting.

A sweet special project was the installation of a small structure for sitting at the top of Otter Knobs, which is the far (and high) end of the Paulus Path, a 1.8-mile-long walking trail named in honor of artist and Penland neighbor Paulus Berensohn. The structure was designed and built by John Clark and Zander Ellenbogen. It was moved into place and assembled by our facilities staff and a crew of volunteers, who had to carry it in sections about two-hundred yards through the woods to reach the site. Generations of uphill walkers will be grateful.

This is the walkway through the lower campus getting a surface upgrade. The new system starts with landscape fabric that gets covered by a grid of hard plastic rings about an inch deep. The grid is then covered with washed gravel, which is locked in place by the rings. The result is a stable gravel surface that drains well and is not subject to erosion.

This welcoming structure, designed and built by John Clark and Zander Ellenbogen, sits on top of Otter Knobs, at the end of the Paulus Path, a 1.8-mile-long walking trail named in honor of artist and Penland neighbor Paulus Berensohn.

ANNUAL BENEFIT AUCTION

ALWAYS AN EXHILARATING TWO-DAY EXTRAVAGANZA under the big tent and in Penland’s studios, the 2013 annual benefit auction on August 9 and 10 brought in a total revenue of $635,330, from ticket and art sales, sponsorships, donations, and advertising. The event netted $443,862 in direct support of Penland’s programs. Records were broken in advertising sales income, in-kind donations, corporate spon-sorship income, absentee bidding, and Fund-A-Need gifts. The Fund-A-Need program raised $105,250 to help renovate the Pines dining hall.

Sculptor and educator (and recipient of a lifetime achievement award from the National Museum of Women in the Arts) Dorothy Gill Barnes was honored as Penland’s 2013 Outstanding Artist Educator. “Her life’s work embodies an expression of reverence for the natural world,” wrote Eva Tuschman in her tribute to Barnes.

Lucy Morgan Leaders enjoyed a special luncheon and a hands-on photography workshop following the meal. Lucy Morgan Leaders were also invited to attend an exhibition preview and talk with Mark Leach, executive director of the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art; auction artists Mark Peiser and Randy Shull; creative arts director at Haywood Community College Kari Rinn; and Penland trustee and South Carolina Arts Commission visual arts director Harriett Green.

The centerpieces for tables were made by former Penland resident artist Marc Maiorana. The featured works in the auction were major pieces by glass artist Mark Peiser and woodworker/sculptor/painter Randy Shull.

Thank you to all the artists, patrons, staff, and volunteers who made this mammoth event a great success.

DONOR/STUDENT PROFILE: ELIZABETH ARALIAALTHOUGH ELIZABETH ARALIA HAS BEEN AN ARTIST MOST OF HER LIFE, she didn’t start coming to Penland until she was fifty: the year her son turned ten. “I came in 1998 for a class with Nick Cave and it was transformative,” she said. “I said to myself, ‘I’m going to come back here every year.’ And so far I have.” Elizabeth and her hus-band, photographer Nick Graetz, had moved to North Carolina about ten years before that, and Elizabeth says that she heard about Penland “in the air.”

Born in Detroit, she got an English degree at Indiana University and then went on to study art at the College of Creative Studies at the University of Santa Barbara in California. “It was a fascinating place,” she said. “The teachers there were all artists, and they just taught whatever they wanted. There was no set curriculum.” After fin-ishing that program, she headed for New York. “I ran out of money near my mother’s house in Indiana, so I stayed there. I got this grant from the NEA where they paid you to do your art and to work with kids in the schools. During that time, I met and mar-ried my husband, and eventually we settled in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.”

Elizabeth works in textiles, painting, assemblage, and collage. One of her best-known projects is a tarot deck created through carefully-constructed collage. “I’ve been doing collage since 1978,” she said. “I don’t do it using a computer. I like to use things that there’s only one of; it’s more of a commitment.” Recent Penland work-shops have reignited her interest in painting and introduced her to encaustic, which she has been integrating into her work.

In addition to her years of taking Penland workshops, Elizabeth and Nick have been generous annual supporters of the school, and they have recently created a scholarship in honor of Elizabeth’s late sister, Lynn Kerr Azzam. “She’s my half sister and we wouldn’t have known her except for the Internet. We only met her two years ago. We were together a few times and then she suddenly died. I didn’t know her well, but I felt very close to her. I wanted to do something for Penland in her name.”

“My husband and I give to a lot of things,” she continued. “We pick things that are close to our hearts, and Penland is at the top of my list. I want to give people the help I didn’t get when I was struggling financially and needed support as an artist. I imagine what it would have been like if someone had given me time at Penland back then.”

“Penland is magnetic and people who have the right metal get stuck.” Elizabeth said. “It draws me back every year. When the catalog comes, I get excited, and when I first drive in, I just think, ‘There it is.’” –Robin Dreyer

LUCY MORGAN LEADERSPenland’s Lucy Morgan Leaders are a special leadership group of annual fund donors who contribute $1,000 or more each year to support the annual operating needs of the school. These gifts directly benefit studio operations and scholarships. Lucy Morgan Leaders honor and continue the work of Penland’s founder, Lucy Morgan, by investing in Penland and helping all who come here to develop the ideas and skills needed to grow personally and artistically. The list that follows names donors who have made gifts of $1,000 or more between May 1, 2013, and April 30, 2014. Lucy Morgan Leader art donors are listed on page 31.

THE ANNUAL FUND

THE ANNUAL FUND MAY 1, 2013 – APRIL 30, 2014The Penland annual fund supports the annual operations of the school, from utilities that keep our buildings heated and our lights on, to propane for studio operation, to scholar-ship assistance for many deserving students. The annual fund provides essential support each year and helps ensure the quality of the Penland experience for both students and instructors. In fiscal year 2014, 854 donors to the annual fund contributed $668,352 to the school, providing critical operating support for our mission. Penland is grateful for the generosity of our annual fund donors. The list that follows names donors who have made gifts of $999 or below between May 1, 2013, and April 30, 2014. Gifts of more than $1,000 are listed in the Lucy Morgan Leader section, beginning on page 15. Art donors are listed beginning on page 31. We have made every effort to recognize donors who have made gifts during this time period. If your name does not appear as you believe it should, please contact the development office so we may correct our records. Gifts made after April 30, 2014, will be recognized in our next annual report.

Daniel Souto spent several years taking classes at Penland in the late 1990s and then returned to his native Venzuela determined to become a blacksmith in a country where the craft had com-pletely died out. He worked and saved money for five years so he could buy tools. Eventually, once he had a fully functioning shop, he invited Stephen Yusko, who he met at Penland, to teach a blacksmithing workshop in Venezuela. When Stephen agreed to teach at Penland in the summer of 2013, he invited Daniel to be his assis-tant. It was Daniel’s first trip back since 1999. “Seeing this place again,” he said, “it’s like a dream. It’s just learn-ing, learning, enjoying, being inspired. This is what I want to do at my studio: bring people in and teach them how to make things with their hands. I would like to help people, like you say at Penland, to have creative lives. That is the key. I just want to take everything I know and give it away. Maybe I can create a resurgence of blacksmithing in Venezuela.”

ANDREW GLASGOW WRITERS RESIDENCY

RESIDENT WRITER: EMILIA FERRAROIN 2003, SOCIAL ANTHROPOLOGIST EMILIA FERRARO was living in Ecuador, where she had been teaching and doing research off and on for ten years. She was going through a difficult time personally and didn’t have a job. She decided she should use the time doing something out of the ordinary for her, so began learning to make jewelry.

She was hoping that learning this skill would give her mind a rest. “In fact,” she said, “it changed my whole way of understanding what knowledge is and my understanding of the process of learning. For a teacher like me, this is huge. I soon discovered something that is probably obvious to people at Penland but was completely unknown to me at the time, which is that mind and body, they do work together. I realized and experienced that the body is the source of a particular type of knowledge and that knowledge is not only in the mind. I also discovered that this knowledge is rarely granted full authority compared, for example, to scientific or academic knowledge because of the widespread belief that knowledge from the intellect is more valuable than experiential knowledge.”

Emilia, who is Italian by birth, is the director of the Sustainable Development Program in the School of Geography and Geosciences at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland. She has a Ph.D. in social anthropology from the University of Kent and a masters in development studies from Victoria University of Manchester, both in the England. She spent a couple weeks at Penland in the summer of 2013 as the Andrew Glasgow Writing Resident.

Emilia has written extensively about the indigenous people of Andean Ecuador. She has also become deeply involved in the search for new ways of living that are more in harmony with the planet and with the nonhuman world. She refers to this effort as “the sustainability project.” Part of her motivation to spend time at Penland came from her interest in how craft or creative making relates to sustainability.

In her Penland talk, she explained how time spent in Penland studios stimulated this thinking. “I pinched a pot in the ceramics class, I dyed indigo cloth in textiles. I had a lot of fun but it has also been a source of thinking. While I was doing this I was remind-ed in very practical terms how much we humans are made up of the same stuff as the materials I was handling. . . . I think that the creative practice of making promotes a different notion of humanity by drawing attention to this intimate relationship between the making of human life and the making of the natural world. It helped me understand or experience human existence as co-evolving with the nonhuman worlds.

“The current unsustainability of the world is obliging us to face the challenge of how to live differently on the planet with others. The new mode of humanity must be based upon connections rather than separations, interdependence rather than autonomy. In the process of making, I was thinking about these words and I was thinking that in fact the connections between humans and nonhumans come from a shared identity which is substantive—we are made from the same matter—rather than metaphorical. So I think that making and working with materials brings this awareness and this experience of how we share matter.

“For the sustainability project, I see that the wider value of both creative making in general and places like Penland in particular has gone beyond individual satisfaction. I see places like Penland as an adventure in living one of those possibilities where a dif-ferent mode of humanity can be crafted. It is a community that, while experimenting with new processes and materials, experiments with new ways of living and being in the world together, of crafting futures.” –Robin Dreyer

SPECIAL EVENTSThese supporters attended events hosted by friends of Penland, Penland-sponsored trips, or other special gatherings during fiscal year 2014 (May 1, 2013 to April 30, 2014).

This photograph by Penland instructor Evon Streetman was one of thirty-five donated to a special auction held at the home of Ellen Kassilly and Frank Konhaus in Chapel Hill. The auction raised funds for a new Penland photog-raphy studio and increased awareness of Penland’s photography program among a group of dedicated photogra-phy collectors and enthusiasts. It was one of many gatherings that were host-ed by friends of the school.

DONOR PROFILE: ROBIN HANESROBIN HANES GOT HER FIRST CAMERA as a gift from her brother when she graduated from high school. Minolta in hand, she spent part of the summer of 1973 at Penland taking a photography workshop taught by Betty Hahn. “It did kind of change my life,” Robin says. “There was a range of experience and age in the class, and a spirit of explo-ration, sharing, and discovery.”

After her first experience as a young woman at Penland, Robin attended St. John’s College in New Mexico, eventually returning to her home state of North Carolina to pursue a degree at UNC Chapel Hill. She switched majors a few times, finally finding her ground in painting. Her love of the North Carolina mountains and art kept her tied to Asheville, and connected to Penland, where she returned to take a drawing class with Mary Ann Zotto in 2004.

“I was happy to find Penland still operating in the same spirit,” she says. As a painter and a registered art therapist, Hanes has long observed the varying environments in which art is taught. She notes the tendency of some artists to withhold techniques and guard their processes. “Penland is the opposite. It’s about openness and sharing—an unusually positive place for learning,” she says. Hanes’s positive experiences in the arts also nurtured the paths of her two sons, both filmmakers. One son, Emmett McGregor of Asheville, has taken two Penland workshops.

Penland’s committed positive atmosphere and the creation of a new studio for drawing and painting led Robin Hanes to create the Lasater Drawing and Painting Scholarship in memory of her mother, Barbara. “I wanted to strengthen the drawing and painting opportunities at Penland,” she says, “and invite people of diverse econom-ic backgrounds to get there.”

“I come from a generous family,” she adds. “My mother’s side is the quieter one, so I’m excited to have her last name on this.” Robin pauses, and notes that, in the wider world, too many people have negative experiences in art classes. “Penland is inspiring,” she says. “It’s my pleasure to encourage others to find it.” –Elaine Bleakney

SCHOLARSHIP STUDENTS: JOE O’BRIEN AND LORING TAOKAIN THE SUMMER OF 2013, two metalsmiths received the Collins, Evans, Massey Scholarship: Joe O’Brien and Loring Taoka. The summer scholarship is endowed in honor of Clyde and Dot Collins, Lisbeth Evans, and Bill Massey—all long-term sup-porters of Penland.

Joe, who hails from Naperville, Illinois, took Shawn Decker’s workshop, Sound & Light for Things. In reflecting on his experience, Joe said: “Over my two weeks here, I have been surrounded by people who are at the forefront of their fields and experts in their media. The energy and inspiration at Penland is contagious, seeing the work that my fellow students and instructors produce catalyzes my own creative process. By far the most amazing part of my time here has been encountering so many people who are so willing to share information, be it technical skills, ideas, opinions, or experience.”

Loring, whose brooches and other jewelry pieces can be found in the Penland Gallery, used his scholarship award to take Arthur Hash’s metal class focusing on com-bining fabrication methods and enameling.

“Working with Arthur Hash is a transformative experience—he has the ability to push the way people conceptualize their work in an environment that is inclusive and critical. Ideas trump materials in my approach, and Arthur was able to engage in what I found important.” –Elaine Bleakney

Erik and Martin are known for their innovative folded-paper struc-tures (they call them “curved-crease sculptures”). They were at Penland for a week in January, 2014 as part of a group of twenty-eight artists working together in the glass, wood, and iron studios. “Penland,” said Martin, “is the freest creative environment we’ve ever worked in.” You can find pictures of their paper sculptures at Erik’s website: erikdemaine.org.

FUND-A-STUDENT CHAIR PROJECTPenland sessions end with a scholarship auction of artwork made by students, instruc-tors, and friends. Proceeds go to Penland’s general work study scholarship program. Each year work-study students accept the challenge of balancing studio time with work-ing for the school, becoming an integral part of life at Penland. In fiscal year 2014 (May 1, 2013, to April 30, 2014), the scholarship auctions raised $111,840 for the general work-study scholarship program. The following individuals made gifts to the Fund-A-Student Chair Project at scholarship auctions in fiscal year 2014. These donors are each honored with an etched copper nameplate on the back of a chair in the Pines dining hall.

“I feel as though I have a wealth of new knowledge to take home with me. Perhaps even more meaningful than introducing me to a wonderful medium, my time at Penland has reinforced my lifelong dream of becoming a working artist and has given me the courage to pursue that goal with fresh, renewed vigor.”

–Margaret Lindsay Barrick, who received the a Windgate Charitable Fund Scholarship to take an encaus-tic painting workshop with Fawn Potash

VOLUNTEERS

VOLUNTEER PROFILE: JASON BIGE BURNETTCERAMIST JASON BIGE BURNETT SIPS FROM A MUG on a break from teaching in Penland’s clay studio. This is not just any mug: Dolly Parton cuddles a kitten front and center. Flowers bedeck her bouffant. Fellow ceramist Justin Rothshank made the screenprinted mug for Jason, who may be the biggest Dolly Parton fan in western North Carolina—and possibly beyond. “She wasn’t actually the best singer in her fam-ily,” he tells me, “but she was the one who made it.”

Jason has made it, too: he’s an established artist whose new book, Graphic Clay: Ceramic Surfaces & Printed Image Transfer Techniques was just published by Lark Books. He and his husband, Michael, lived for several years in Bakersville, NC. They moved recently when Jason was hired as the program and studios manager at Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts—Penland's sister school in Gatlinburg, Tennessee (which happens to be the seat of Dolly Parton’s empire).

It’s all a long way from Louisville and his days at Western Kentucky University, where Jason navigated the art program, determined to discover his route as an artist, while at the same time processing the varied forms of discrimination he confronted as a young gay man. In 2007, Jason took his first Penland workshop and was hooked. He returned in 2008 to take a figurative sculpture workshop with Arthur González.

“At Penland I was allowed to be vulnerable,” says Jason, “to try things. It wasn’t like academia, where you defend and defend. My time at Penland encouraged curiosity and discovery. I could just be in the medium, rather than defending why I was in it.”

During that workshop, he also met Christina Córdova, and her care and thought-fulness, in addition to her work, affected him deeply. By the end of the session, Jason had applied to—and would eventually receive—the Penland core fellowship, which he started while he was still finishing his B.A. from Western Kentucky.

Since his time as a core student, Jason has been an active and visible member of the Penland community: he has taught two workshops, he volunteers at the annual benefit auction and the community open house, and he’s a natural ambassador—a Dolly-level promoter of the school. “When I’m talking with others about Penland I’m not just talking about programs,” he says, “but the place. I meet people in clay, my generation and younger, who are yearning. ‘Why don’t you just move down there?’ is what I say.”

Jason’s also been active in Penland’s official ambassador program, which recruits students and instructors to make presentations about Penland at other institutions. He’s done several of these, and he also talks about Penland at conferences, at shows, on the street, anywhere he happens to be. Like the great, bouncy, intelligent Dolly, his generosity draws others to ask questions about their lives, and follow creative paths—if that’s their thing. To quote Dolly herself: “The magic is inside you. There ain’t no crystal ball.” –Elaine Bleakney

Right: Niko Yulis was a stu-dent in Amir Friedman’s work-shop titled Kinetic Adornment, which explored jewelry with moving parts. Early in the workshop, Niko took apart a manual typewriter and then made a series of pieces from the parts, including this pendant, which he is holding because he hadn’t yet hung it on a chain.
