trustANNUAL REPORT

Dear friends and supporters,

It’s easy to tell you that you can trust us. But at Delta Dental of Arizona Foundation, we take that a step further and actually show you. We can show you the work we do with your donations, the lives we’ve changed, the smiles we’ve created. It’s not a brief story, but we think every piece is important, so we’ve spread it out over 13 months.

We know teeth. As the Foundation arm of the top dental benefits company in the state, we work alongside dental health professionals every single day. But Delta Dental of Arizona Foundation is much more than that. It’s more than cleanings. It’s more than cavities. It’s more than reminding everyone to floss once a day. We focus on the big picture of oral health in Arizona and work on making a difference in our communities.

We grant money to dental clinics, dental schools, portable dental services, anti-tobacco campaigns, and programs for pregnant women. We give toothbrushes to children who share one with their brothers and sisters and have never had their own. We fix a smile, improve a life and move the needle.

Our mission is to support the improvement of oral health in Arizona. That singular focus drives every decision we make and action we take to find the best ways to serve our communities. You can trust us to know where the need is greatest and how to serve it. You can trust us to make the best use of your donation.

We enlist the help of our board members, our donors, volunteers, dentists, hygienists, educators and industry specialists. It’s thanks to the support of people like you that we are able to make the most impact, affect the most positive change.

As you read each month, I trust that you will enjoy learning about the stories behind the smiles.

Truly,

Sandi Perez, Ph.D. Delta Dental of ArizonaVice President of Communications and Community Benefit

Publisher: Sandi Perez, Ph.D. | Editor: Barb Kozuh | Concept and Design: Jayne Flax | Design: Ashley Cappellazzi

At Delta Dental of Arizona Foundation, we value trust. We believe there’s nothing more important than being reliable, honest and effective. But we know that trust has to be earned. That’s why we work so hard to be the best at what we do. We understand the gaps in Arizona’s oral health landscape and address them.

We ask the right questions and get answers. Trust our passion, our focus, our dedication and commitment to serve our communities.

We want you to trust Delta Dental of Arizona Foundation.

Delta Dental of Arizona Foundation has been a catalyst and leader in oral health issues for our state since the Foundation was established in 1997. Expanding the number of qualified dental hygienists in the workforce, specifically by investing in the Rio Salado College of Dental Hygiene, was an early goal.

However, over the years, the focus has shifted as Arizona’s children and youth ranked consistently low on most oral health indicators. The Foundation Board of Directors has responded by funding best-practice services, such as school-based dental sealant efforts and fluoride programs to prevent dental decay and promote good oral health practices, in an effort to improve access to preventive dental care for children, youth and pregnant mothers.

Until all Arizonans are free from dental disease, Delta Dental of Arizona Foundation will work to be a significant and stable source of funding for a range of oral health programs throughout the state.

You have helped do just that, in one way or another, or you wouldn’t have received this calendar. But one of the simplest things you can do to help ensure the Foundation’s sustainability is to donate to the Arizona Charitable Tax Credit Program.

Arizona tax laws allow you to donate to Delta Dental of Arizona Foundation and receive credit back on your tax return of up to $200 for single taxpayers or $400 for taxpayers filing jointly. You donate to us and you receive it back on your tax return – please participate. For more information, go to deltadentalaz.com/foundation.

Your participation is vital to help the Foundation provide funding to critically important oral health programs in Arizona.

Communication is a major focus at the Foundation. We want you to know what we’re doing to improve oral health; see the good work of the organizations receiving funding with your donations; understand how we’re raising money and appreciate the results created with your support.

One way we raise money is by participating in Birdies for Charity, a fundraising program run by the Phoenix Thunderbirds at the Waste Management Phoenix Open. This involves getting pledges for every birdie hit during the tournament. 15% of the funds collected are matched by the Thunderbirds and we use the funds to continue our good work. The Foundation literally reaches hundreds of thousands of people through this program and during the Phoenix Open. Swing by our booth at the Open and see us!

One of our favorite months of the year at the Delta Dental of Arizona Foundation is Children’s Dental Health Month – and it’s celebrated daily in February at the Children’s Museum of Phoenix. The Foundation sponsors this month-long event at the museum to provide oral health programming and education for both children and adults.

Pediatric dentists informally meet with parents while children make “tooth fairy wands” out of toothbrushes. Children and adults learn about proper tooth brushing, see puppet shows and, of course, visit with the Tooth Fairy. All parents and children get to create their own Smiles Bags by selecting a toothbrush, floss and paste when they leave. We never tire of hearing little ones tell us how much they love their Delta Dental of Arizona Foundation toothbrush!

KNOW THE ORAL HEALTH COMMUNITY

Delta Dental of Arizona Foundation is embedded in Delta Dental of Arizona, the leading dental benefits company in the state. The company, incorporated in 1972, established the Foundation in 1997. Since the beginning, we have benefitted by learning about dentists giving back to their communities throughout the state.

Kathy Morrow leads the Professional Relations team, who travel throughout the state meeting with dentists, their office employees and learning of challenges these dentists face in their communities. For us, this connection to the Foundation is invaluable to helping us reach into all communities.

It’s important to us to get involved by joining coalitions and meeting people throughout the state who are focused on improving the oral health of their piece of Arizona. These networks and associations make everyone’s work more impactful and connected.

Not many organizations can say that 100% of your donation goes directly to charity. Delta Dental of Arizona is grateful to be one of the few. The Foundation’s administrative costs are funded by the parent organization, Delta Dental of Arizona. Salaries, computers, office space and supplies are funded by them, ensuring that every cent of your donation can go where it is needed most.

The annual Golf4Smiles Tournament, the largest fundraiser of the year for the Foundation, raises nearly $100,000 which goes directly to provide dental sealants, fluoride varnish, dental screenings, educational programs and a wide variety of integral services and supplies to populations that need it most.

We hope you’ll join us at Grayhawk Golf Club on May 6, 2015 to tee it up for teeth!

Over 200 golfers participated in Golf4Smiles in 2014 and raised nearly $100,000 which was distributed in grants to 28 organizations

Our name, Delta Dental of Arizona Foundation, emphasizes how important we feel it is to reach out to all four corners of the state to improve oral health. As Arizona is a tapestry of cultures, ethnicities and traditions; all of which, literally, impact oral health, the Foundation seeks organizations offering dental education, services and programs to reach those who need it most.

We fund preventive programs in small towns across Arizona whose populations have limited access to dental care, but can be served with portable dental programs, tribal health initiatives, training programs for health care workers in rural counties, even home visitation programs for high risk families.

We feel it is imperative to reach all Arizonans, whether with screenings or Smile Bags or preventive care until we eliminate oral disease in the state of Arizona.

The Foundation funds screening and fluoride programs for preschool and school-aged students throughout the state.

A major part of the work we do is learn, listen, participate and engage with organizations throughout the state providing oral health services. And we learn about the communities not just from dentists, hygienists and dental assistants. We learn about clinics in rural areas, government and tribal oral health programs, mobile and portable dental services, inter-professional coalitions – any group intent on improving oral healthcare in Arizona.

It’s important we know the leaders and experts in the dental landscape in Arizona so our grantmaking is effective, meaningful and impactful.

In 2012, we awarded $733,752 to 25 organizations and in 2013, $710,000 was awarded to 37 organizations. More than 275,000 lives were positively affected by this funding. That’s why we take this responsibility so seriously.

Toothbrush. Toothpaste. Floss. These are all of the basic supplies for good oral hygiene. We want all families to have them and know how to properly use them to protect their smiles. Delta Dental of Arizona Foundation provides “Smile Bags” with these essentials to families across the state.

In the last two years, more than $130,650 in supplies were donated to nonprofit organizations, which in turn distributed them to deserving families across the state.

Nonprofits request Smile Bags for clinics, school-based programs, food banks, a wide variety of outreach programs such as health fairs, domestic violence prevention programs, plus many, many other vital programs throughout the state.

“A SMILE IS A CURVE THAT SETS EVERYTHING STRAIGHT.”

The oral health landscape in Arizona is ever-changing. We make a concerted, strategic effort to learn all about what is happening in the community – from the services of embedded, integrated dental programs and safety net clinics; to the goals of oral health coalitions. It could be a new funding partner for a small nonprofit, a new piece of dental equipment or the latest grant opportunity. Our board and staff have a broad and deep knowledge of the industry.

We spend time visiting sites, participating in oral health events, attending coalition meetings and meeting new program managers to expand knowledge, to build bridges and to connect people throughout the state. These connections foster collaborations that can only help improve the oral health of Arizonans.

The Foundation sponsors events like New Leadership, New Vision for Arizona Philanthropy, hosted by Arizona Grantmakers Forum in 2014.

Knowledge is the groundwork for Delta Dental of Arizona Foundation. Learning, listening and talking about oral health is critical. Foundation board members like Dr. Fred Olsen share their knowledge by volunteering at local dental clinics. It’s why we share funding ideas with other nonprofits, and why the Foundation sponsors philanthropic events.

The Foundation holds workshops each year teaching nonprofits what is expected in our grant proposal and providing technical assistance to potential grantees. We explain how to include oral health education in their programs and expand their services to include dental programs. We suggest ways to collaborate with other groups to create greater impact. We truly want to teach others what we know to better their own community.

The Foundation Grants Committee, a large and committed subset of the Board of Directors, works diligently to read scores of grant applications each fall. There are a multitude of questions that arise from reading the applications. Each question is asked; each answer is communicated. We are dedicated to this process as it is integral in making the most informed decisions possible with your donations.

Each February, after funds have been distributed to organizations throughout the state, every group is monitored by staff and board members to ensure each grantee uses the funds as outlined in their grant proposal. This process ensures the greatest impact from the grants, making your dollars work as vigorously as possible to create the necessary change for better oral health for Arizona.

Whether the economic indicators fall or rise, the Foundation wants the community to trust that leadership, advocacy and funding will be available. Therefore, the Board of Directors established an endowment fund projected to provide stable and increasing grantmaking funds into the future.

This is a deliberate, strategic plan ensuring our mission will be fulfilled. It is important to continue supporting a wide range of evidence-based strategies such as school-based dental sealant programs, safety net clinics, community health centers and educational programs across the state. We want the community to feel confident they can count on Delta Dental of Arizona Foundation to provide support for oral health education, programs and services now and in the future. We will always strive to improve oral health in Arizona.
