OUR VISION

A community with a dynamic and world-class arts and cultural sector where the arts are accessible to all and valued as a central and critical component to a healthy society

OUR MISSION

Strengthening the community by supporting the arts through leadership, advocacy and grant making

Page 5: ANNUAL REPORT - ArtsFund · The Associates Program (see page 12), ArtsFund’s annual volunteer corps, equips individuals with fundraising and leadership skills and provides tools

A REPORT TO THE COMMUNITY

We are dedicated to building healthy communities through the

arts. Our approach is holistic—we strive to strengthen individual arts

organizations and the cultural sector as a whole, increase access to

the arts, and use the arts to advance community priorities.

In 2016 we partnered with thousands of individuals, hundreds

of businesses, and leaders in government and philanthropy to

support over 100 cultural organizations and the communities

they serve. We provide our assistance in a multitude of ways—

through grant making, trainings, programs, services, and

advocacy. Our investment of dollars and resources helped arts

and cultural organizations present over 10,000 events, exhibits,

and performances, create expanded access to underserved

populations, and provide tickets to 809,000 school-aged

children in our region.

We do this work because a strong, diverse, and accessible arts

and cultural sector is essential to a healthy community. As

the findings from ArtsFund’s recent Economic Impact Study

demonstrate, our local arts organizations fuel the economy, drive

tourism, inspire creative thinking and problem solving both in

school and at work, and foster civic engagement. The arts provide

a lens through which we can better understand our differences

and in turn, develop empathy and tolerance. And the arts elevate

the quality of life in our region and nourish the soul.

For all these reasons and many more, the arts are essential

building blocks of our civic health. For the past 47 years, ArtsFund

has been strengthening the Central Puget Sound region through

support of the arts. This is our commitment to the community, and

we invite you to join us.

2016 ALLOCATIONS COMMITTEE

For over four decades, ArtsFund has strengthened the

community by raising funds from individuals and businesses

to provide grants and other organizational support to the

region’s nonprofit arts sector. Through its widely respected

allocations process, ArtsFund has distributed more than $75

million in operating support grants to a broad range of arts

groups throughout King and Pierce Counties. In 2016, ArtsFund

awarded grants totaling over $2.4 million.

Both donors and grant recipients trust ArtsFund’s allocation

process. The Allocations Committee comprises corporate

and private grant making experts, and spends considerable

time evaluating application materials and interviewing the

leadership of applicant arts groups. They systematically rate

each group against the same key evaluation points based on

mission, financial stability, governance, and community impact.

In June, the ArtsFund Board of Trustees approves the slate of

grant recommendations. Following the grant cycle, ArtsFund’s

President & CEO meets with applicants to review the

assessments and provide feedback.

ELIGIBILITY

ArtsFund grants are institutionally oriented, operational grants for

organizations that present or produce a season of programs. Eligibility

requirements, deadlines and contact information can be found at

www.artsfund.org.

DONORS

power2give.org/PugetSound was a regional arts crowd-funding

platform hosted by ArtsFund from 2013-2016. Leveraging

matching gifts and technology in support of specific cultural

projects, ArtsFund launched power2give to help arts groups

build capacity, explore new fundraising tools and techniques

to engage and mobilize new donors, and ultimately expand

their base of support. The initiative also enabled ArtsFund to

broaden our support for diverse cultural groups. In a three year

span, the platform involved 100 arts and cultural organizations

from throughout the Central Puget Sound.

ArtsFund’s power2give contributed to original programming,

brought art to stages and venues throughout the state, and

provided greater access and unique experiences for both youth

and adults. In addition, the platform supported arts education

programs, funded artists commissions and residencies, enabled

facilities improvements and enhancements to the audience

experience, and much more.

For a list of the 100 posting organizations, donors and

matching donors, visit artsfund.org/p2g.

BOARD LEADERSHIP TRAINING

Our Board Leadership Training program strengthens arts organizations by teaching fundamentals of board

service and providing practical internships with nonprofit boards. Over 600 current and future nonprofit board

members have taken the training. In 2016, 55 participants representing 44 civic, cultural and community

organizations participated.

ECONOMIC IMPACT STUDIES

ArtsFund’s Economic Impact Studies detail the importance of the arts and cultural sector as an

economic driver in our region. The research provides a critical advocacy tool articulating the measurable

impact of the arts. Results from the study released in 2015 are available at www.artsfund.org/EIS.

In complement to our grant making, ArtsFund presents a

variety of leadership and advocacy programs to strengthen arts

organizations, educate and empower nonprofit leaders and

volunteers, and advance dialogue on the critical impact of

arts and culture on our quality of life, our children’s

education, and our economy. We also play a leadership

role on broader initiatives that foster the future of the

arts ecology in this region.

PROGRAMMING & ADVOCACY

ASSOCIATES PROGRAM The Associates Program (see page 12), ArtsFund’s annual

volunteer corps, equips individuals with fundraising and leadership skills and provides tools needed for civic

engagement and nonprofit leadership. In 2016, the team of 101 ArtsFund volunteers raised over $415,000.

“Considered essential for our new board members—we note far greater involvement and far greater understanding of the role of a board member, as each of our new board members take this excellent course.”

CULTURAL RESOURCE COLLECTIVE

ArtsFund manages and serves as fiscal agent for the Cultural Resource Collective, a secure patron database used by 34 regional arts and culture groups to develop and maintain audiences.

CONVENINGS

ArtsFund expands the capacity of the cultural sector by furthering discussion and providing tools and training

in response to needs identified by the field. In 2016, ArtsFund convenings were attended by nearly 200

participants from 106 organizations.

ADVOCACY

We provide leadership and partner in promoting legislative initiatives such as Cultural Access Washington and Building

for the Arts, furthering public investment in arts and culture.

Page 12: ANNUAL REPORT - ArtsFund · The Associates Program (see page 12), ArtsFund’s annual volunteer corps, equips individuals with fundraising and leadership skills and provides tools

In 2016, 101 ArtsFund Associates from 70 unique companies raised over $415,000 for the arts in the Puget Sound region. The ArtsFund

Associates program is a volunteer corps of business professionals committed to supporting the arts and strengthening the community through

fundraising. While generating support for the arts and cultural organizations that make our community thrive, the ArtsFund Associates develop

transferrable skills, expand their networks across sectors, and of course, have fun!

ASSETS & ENDOWMENTSIn addition to its annual campaign, ArtsFund has earnings from

its endowment and the Century Building to support operations

and grants. The four-story Century Building, a gift to ArtsFund

from the Kreielsheimer Foundation, provides one floor for

ArtsFund operations and three floors for commercial lease.

ArtsFund’s endowments, which now stand at $15.9 million, take

advantage of the organization’s unparalleled knowledge of the

arts in this region and its second-to-none grant-making process.

WORKPLACE GIVING

ArtsFund ran workplace giving campaigns in companies

throughout the Central Puget Sound, bringing art into the

workplace and building workforce development, while raising

over $250,000 for the arts.

ARTSFUND IN THE COMMUNITY

ARTS NIGHT AT SAFECO FIELD

ArtsFund presented the 4th annual Arts Night at Safeco

Field to raise visibility of our region’s dynamic arts offerings

and build connections between cultural organizations and

potential audiences and supporters in the stands. Arts

activities included live performances at the gates and on the

field and an Arts Zone with representatives from regional

cultural organizations.

27

CELEBRATION OF THE ARTS LUNCHEON

ArtsFund’s 28th annual Celebration of the Arts Luncheon drew

nearly 1,000 arts supporters. The event was highlighted by

keynote speaker John Maeda and award-winners Mark Morris

and the Nesholm Family Foundation, and featured on-stage

and interactive arts elements exploring the synergies between

art, design and technology.

COMMUNITY CONVERSATIONS

With the release of our Economic Impact Study of Arts,

Cultural and Scientific Organizations in the Central Puget Sound

Region, ArtsFund led more than 20 community conversations

presenting the data and examining the ways in which arts and

culture drive economic and community development.
