HOPE AND A HELPING HAND

CLARA LAMBERT5-YEAR LUNG CANCER SURVIVORCANCARE VOLUNTEER

“I don’t think there’s anything better than giving back; letting people know that just because they have cancer, it doesn’t mean it’s the end. They can survive, just like I did,” says Clara, a five-year lung cancer survivor.

As a CanCare support volunteer, Clara has devoted her time to ensuring that cancer patients don’t battle cancer alone. “I’m a lung cancer survivor, and I was lucky enough to have a team of supporters behind me. Yet, others don’t. They don’t have someone that has felt what they feel, someone who can provide comfort and hope. That’s what I’m here for,” says Clara.

Through CanCare’s Hospital Visitation Program, Clara is able to volunteer at Memorial Hermann Hospital and visit with cancer patients that are going through treatment. Each time that Clara volunteers at Memorial Hermann Hospital, she wears a t-shirt that says “survivor,” to remind cancer patients that they too, can overcome cancer, just like her. “If you’re going through cancer and you meet someone who survived the cancer you’re battling – it’s life-changing,” says Clara.

“I will always hold all of my support matches close to my heart. I have a special bond with each and every one of them,” Clara states. Clara shared her experience with Kay, who lives in New Jersey, and was going through lung cancer like she once did. “She was scared to death, but she never had to face any of it alone because I was with her every step of the way,” says Clara. “She and I would talk on the phone four to five times a week, and I felt what she felt. We would talk for hours about her treatments, her good days and her bad days.” Kay finished treatment in August, and recently sent Clara a photo of her country dancing. “She’s thrilled to be alive,” says Clara with a smile on her face. “I’m happy I was able to bring her hope to beat cancer. Hope to live.”

“Cancer patients want to connect with someone who has answers and who has gone through what they’re going through, and who is alive. I’m happy that CanCare provides that. I’m happy that I can provide that.”

A MESSAGE OF HOPE FROM CEO CRISTINA VETRANOThe year 2017 is a year that our community will never forget. Although we experienced a great deal of loss due to Hurricane Harvey, we were reminded of the immense generosity, support and guidance our community gives to one another.

During the Memorial Day floods two years ago, like many of our Houstonians this year, I too, personally experienced the loss and uncertainty that a disaster like Harvey brings. I have faced the devastation of waking up at 2 a.m. with close to four feet of water in my home, rounding up my family to safely evacuate to a neighbor’s home, and leaving all our personal belongings and decades of memories behind.

One thing that I learned throughout that experience was that I was not alone. I did not have to face the fear of losing every belonging or not knowing what to do next by myself. I had my neighbor, Linda. Linda flooded once before. She knew what my family was going through. She knew how to answer all of my questions, and she knew exactly what I needed to hear. She gave me hope that I could get through my loss and recover.

For the past 27 years, replacing fear with hope has been a part of CanCare’s mission. Every day, CanCare support volunteers respond to individuals who are dealing with their own personal disasters – CANCER. These volunteers have heard those three words, “you have cancer” and survived. They’ve felt what our cancer patients feel. They know what they’re going through, and they spread hope to help them to fight and beat cancer, the same way they did.

This year, over 750 cancer patients and caregivers have been matched with a CanCare support volunteer, and by the close of the year, we expect a 20% increase from last year. Through our Hospital Visitation Program, our hospital volunteers have contributed 5,000 hours at 14 local hospitals and treatment centers this year.

The power of our support volunteers is a power like no other. Each volunteer serves as an icon of hope to our cancer patients and caregivers, giving them the timely and quality support they need to overcome cancer. Currently 1 in 2 men and 1 in 3 women will experience cancer in their lifetime. We know that we have a lot of work to do, but we stand ready for the challenge, and are working hard to ensuring that no one battles cancer alone.

CanCare History

A cancer diagnosis brings normal life to a screeching halt,

followed by an uncontrollable wave of emotions and anxiety about the unknown.

Replacing fear with hope has been important to CanCare since it was formed as a 501(c)(3) in 1990.

CanCare has an ever-deepening legacy of being there for individuals, caregivers, employers and faith communities that want to provide customized,

confidential support to anyone impacted directly or indirectly by cancer.

In 1990, with an anonymous gift and the support of Memorial Drive Presbyterian Church in Houston,

Anne Shaw Turnage, a colon cancer survivor, founded CanCare. Faith continues to be an avenue of great hope as more than 300,000 “Annes” have

received one-on-one support while they faced cancer since that time—and more

than 30 congregations provide a growing faith network

of donations and volunteers.
