Everyone Counts’’was our school theme for 2009-2010, and our students

committed to the idea in many ways. At school, they demonstrated mutual respect and concern for each other

on the playground, in the classroom and in their Harbor Day School “families.” Through community service projects,

they offered support to needy children around the world in places like Haiti and Tanzania. And our math teachers

agreed, “Everyone Counts.”

Harbor Day School is an independent, co-educational school for kindergarten through eighth grade students whose parents seek a rigorous academic environment. Harbor Day School is dedicated to excellence in education. The cornerstone of Harbor Day School’s program is academic excellence through combining both the high standards of scholarship and the encouragement of each child to develop to his or her greatest potential.

The school provides a nurturing environment in which children can develop curiosity, express creativity, appreciate the value of hard work and discipline, develop character and experience the joy of learning. Harbor Day School’s faculty encourages all students to strive for intellectual, physical and moral growth, learn mutual respect and develop self esteem and also to become contributing members of the community. We encourage parents to take an active role in educating their children through contributions of time, energy, and personal resources.

Central to our mission is a commitment to an appreciation of the similarities and differences of perspective and the interdependence of all people. As a family school, Harbor Day is a community of learners in which the dignity of each child, teacher and parent is respected.

Message from the Head of School

Dear Harbor Day School parents, grandparents, alumni and friends:

This year has reverberated with the good will and hard work of all who have made our Harbor Day

community such a place of growth, in all its forms, for the students entrusted to our care.

Long before the 2009-2010 year began, plans for making this year a success were being hatched. By

the beginning of summer, our fair chairs Diana Blatz and Alison Ledger had already organized and

energized a stellar Fall Benefit committee and began the vision that became “Moonlight Over Paris.”

The year began with our all-school picnic, which has become a cherished tradition, thanks to the

leadership and volunteer efforts of the Parent Council. Soon after, the Ladies’ Event chaired by

Lizette Pribus and our Men’s Event, chaired by Jeff Hamilton, began their momentum which ended

by providing a great forum for a sense of community among our parents as well as raising significant

money for the school.

Karyn Davin chaired our Grandparents’ Day program, with its absolutely remarkable attendance of

over 600 grandparents. These were our “big splashes” of events, but those smaller, quieter activities

that keep us glued together and the volunteers who ensure their success are always in the forefront of

our gratitude. The time and effort provided by our room parents, library and lunch volunteers, along

with the leadership of our Board of Trustees and the Parent Council make for a very well run volunteer

program.

I congratulate each and every volunteer who spends time at the school working with our dedicated

faculty, administration and staff to enrich the lives of all the students of Harbor Day.

Warm regards,

Douglas E. Phelps

Dear Harbor Day School Parents, Alumni, and Friends:

All of Harbor Day School’s Trustees worked hard this year to lead the school toward continued long-term

success and to support the administration in the day-to-day operations of HDS. At our meetings, we had

presentations from teachers, discussions of compensation, reports on admissions, and updates on student

achievement. The areas that consumed the most of our energy were, and continue to be, the school’s finances.

The Board of Trustees works closely with the administration in creating and overseeing the school’s operat-

ing budget. The Board works independently to invest our school’s two endowments: the general endowment

and the John F. Marder Scholarship Fund. Additionally, the Board strives to grow our endowments

through raising money with our Annual Fund campaign and the Men’s Event. Special thanks go to Jim

Furey, our treasurer; Pam Massey, who chaired our endowment subcommittee; Scott Shean, our

Development Committee chair; Henry Chung, the chair of the Faculty Support Committee, and Jim

Abbott, our Financial Aid Committee chair.

While the finance-related committees noted above worked to keep the school’s finances in good shape, our

other committees were active, too. The committee chairs whose efforts contributed greatly to Harbor Day

School this year are Alex Airth, Education Committee; Jim Warmington, Buildings and Grounds Committee;

Scott Allen, Nominating Committee; and Tony Petros, Strategic Plan Committee.

Three seemingly irreplacable Trustees left the board at the end of the 2009-2010 year: Scott Allen, Walter

Blass, and Richard Taketa. Scott served on the board in several roles including President. Walter com-

pleted his second six-year tenure and spearheaded our special Financial Aid Fundraising Committee as well

as oversaw our endowment, and Richard chaired the Board’s committees on financial aid and long range

planning. It will take four new Trustees to replace these men. I look forward to working this year with our

incoming Trustees: Tamara Deckey, Hirad Emadi, Jeff Hamilton, and Geoff Von Der Ahe.

In 2009-10, Tony Petros, the Board’s Vice President and chair of the Strategic Plan Committee, began the

process of building a new strategic plan for Harbor Day School. To this end, Tony and the members of the

Strategic Plan Committee gathered information from many sources, prepared the outline for the revised

Strategic Plan, and led the full Board during its annual retreat to discuss Harbor Day School’s values and

plans for the future. Tony and the Strategic Plan Committee expect to gather more data and develop the

Harbor Day School Strategic Plan in the 2010-2011 school year.

As the Trustees work to maintain Harbor Day School’s long-term success, we always remember that the

value of this special school lies in its people, especially the teachers, administrators, and staff. Harbor Day

School is fortunate to be filled with happy students who are taught, nurtured, and kept safe by talented

and hardworking adults. We are grateful to everyone at HDS for all their contributions to the Harbor Day

School program. We look forward to an outstanding 2010-2011 year!

Sincerely,

Angi Evans

Message from the President, Parent Council

Dear Harbor Day School Families and Friends:

Harbor Day School is fortunate to have a parent population who give its time, energy and resources to

enhance our children’s educational experience though a series of events and fundraisers. I was fortunate to work with an

exceptional group of 18 women on the 2009-2010 Parent Council Board.

The school year began with a Parent Council-sponsored Welcome Back Coffee for the parents in The Blass Gym. The

hospitality team of Reesa Emadi and Carolyn Moody provided a lovely table of coffee and treats. There was great

energy in the gym as parents reconnected, signed up for grade-level parties and picked up their school directories.

We continued our tradition of welcoming students and parents back to campus with our third Annual Family Picnic

hosted by Harbor Day School and the Student Enrichment/Parent Education Committee. Co-chairs Sallie Jane Super

and Eriko Gottner ensured that we had tasty food, field games and festivities that created a welcoming atmosphere.

The opening of Café Harbor Day, co-chaired by Christi Veal and Amy Webb, brought the return of Hot Dog Day,

which began in 1952. Who said, “There’s no such thing as a free lunch?” The co-chairs have focused on serving good qual-

ity food with an eye toward a healthier offering.

Moonlight over Paris, the Fall Benefit theme for this year, brought the splendor of the city of lights to The Blass

Gymnasium. The co-chairs, Diana Blatz and Alison Ledger, envisioned an elegant evening of fun, a strong sense of

community, good food and a fabulous offering of items to bid upon. The local and global economic condition did not

dampen the spirits of our families and friends at this enjoyable, successful event.

Try as he may, the Grinch was unable to steal Christmas or the holiday spirit from Harbor Day School! Holiday time

felt the whimsy of Dr. Seuss as Decorations Chair Lori Peterson and her creative team “Seussified” the campus.

Tablescapes, the theme for this years’ Ladies’ Event, was an amazing expression of creativity from the mothers of

Harbor Day School. Chaired by Lizette Du Pribus, the event featured 17 tables exquisitely decorated, with themes such

as “Alice in Wonderland,” “Earth Day” and ”Love That Dog”! The event, held at Big Canyon Country Club, hosted

close to 200 women and raised over $20,000.

Programs offered to our parents through the hard-working Student Enrichment/Parent Education Committee includ-

ed speaker Sir Ken Robinson, a parenting class, a nutritionist, an internet safety speaker, and Dr. Beth Hamilton who

is an HDS Mom and author of So Stressed.

A glorious day was most fitting for a Beach Party, the theme for Grandparents’ Day 2010. Chaired by Karyn Davin, with

help from 170 volunteers, the day saw a record number of grandparents in attendance. Grandparents traveled from all

over the globe to join in one of the most beloved school traditions.

Successful fundraising allowed the Parent Council Board to fund the annual faculty Wish List. The approved $20,000

budget will be used to fund $350 per classroom, a portable piano, wireless “Smart Slates” for use in upper school math/

science rooms, a sound system for the music room, and a new look for our library.

It is with gratitude that I thank my Parent Council Board and all of the parents who volunteer their time and resources

to Harbor Day School.

Gratefully yours,

Molly S. Davin

Page 10: Annual Report

Dear Harbor Day School Families, Alumni and Friends:

On behalf of the Board of Trustees and the Development Committee, I would like to express my gratitude to all

those who supported Harbor Day School in its 2009-10 development campaign.

Fundraising is a critical component in Harbor Day School’s pursuit of excellence in education. The breadth and

depth of Harbor Day School’s programs are second to none among K-8 institutions in Southern California, and

yet our tuition remains a relative bargain compared to peer schools. However, like most independent schools,

the Harbor Day School tuition does not fully cover the expenses associated with operating the school. Contribu-

tions by Harbor Day School families, alumni and friends bridge the gap between tuition revenue and the actual

costs of providing a Harbor Day School education.

Contributions in 2009-10 were primarily made through the Annual Fund, the Fall Benefit, the Ladies’ Event

and the Men’s Event. We received support for the Annual Fund from over 64% of current Harbor Day School

families and over 200 Harbor Day School alumni and friends. Over 70 families contributed $2,000 or more to the

Annual Fund and were recognized at the fourth annual Donor Appreciation Dinner at Abalone Cove. In total,

we were able to raise over $850,000 in 2009-10.

Early this year, we launched the Harbor Day School Alumni Association. This association will

provide numerous benefits to Harbor Day School alumni, including networking opportunities, social events

and a means to stay in touch with fellow alumni. In just this first year of the Alumni Association, we saw the

number of alumni contributions more than double in comparison to prior years.

As we look forward to the 2010-11 school year, I hope that you will continue to make giving to Harbor Day School

a priority. Each gift has an immediate and lasting impact and ensures that Harbor Day School will continue to

be able to invest in its exceptional students and faculty.

Warmest regards,

R. Scott Shean

Fall BenefitThe Fall Benefit which is held each year in November in the school’s Blass Gym, is the major fund-raising event of the year. Its purpose is to promote community among our families while raising monies for needed projects at the school “Moonlight Over Paris” was chaired by the talented duo, Diana Blatz and Alison Ledger They gathered a dynamic team of volunteers and turned the gym into a Parisian street filled with dramatic touches that were the back drop for the silent and live auctions More than 500 Harbor Day School parents and friends enjoyed the fabulous evening while raising more than $250,000 for many school enrichment projects

Grandparents’ Day

More than 600 grandparents attended our traditional event, called “Beach Party” this year, which was chaired by Karyn Davin Our guests were greeted by handsome HDS fathers dressed as lifeguards and clamdigger- decked volunteers who, along with eighth grade students, walked them down to the Blass Gymnasium The Harbor Day School music department, once again, put on a rousing performance of surf songs and great beach music showing off the talents of our amazing students Then it was off to classroom visits where the students were delighted to show off their school to the very grateful grandparents

Ways to GiveMany choose to send a personal check, payable to Harbor Day Endowment Corporation, or have their gift charged to MasterCard, Visa or American Express. Gifts can also be made online at harborday.org.Matching GiftsMany corporations will match gifts to charitable institutions, which allows you to double or triple your gift to the school. Check with your company to see if they have a matching gifts program, or request a matching gifts brochure from the school’s Development Office.United WayHarbor Day School is a nonprofit organization, and you can designate “Harbor Day School” on your United Way gift form. EndowmentContributions to endowment funds are long-term investments for the school.
